Editorial Review

It looks like a gorgeous nostalgia trip to judge by the cover imagealone. The photo is of an old school record player that lies unplugged, awhite label test-pressing waiting on the turntable, while a band of paperwrapped around the cover announces the title in ye olde woodblock-lookingtype, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An intimate collection
I just saw this exhibit at our MoMA, and the work is outstanding. Some of the images are color, some black and white. There are a number of styles and artists, ranging from the very famous to those unknown outside of their small communities. The point is that these are images of musicians--it's that simple.
4-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Photos!
The catalog is gorgeous, the photographs are indeed spectacular. While the written entries were wonderful, they were too few and left me wanting more.I guess that's a good thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a photography book, not a music anthology
It seems to me that the other reviewers have mistakenly criticized the book for its choice of music artists. Such decisions are secondary to the nature of this work of art. Annie Leibovitz is a photographer of surpassing quality and her ability to capture the latent stories of her subjects is on full display in this book. The idea is not so much to produce stunning or provocative photographs as it is to make manifest the character and circumstances of the various pictured musical artists. Seen in this light, Leibovitz's book should be lauded for its ability to tell a story without getting in the way, and to highlight subtleties without resorting to contrivance. "American Music" is a wonderful work of art, as should be expected from such a distinguished artist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best on the Market
This is far and above the best book I've encountered for New Scrappers.Instead of just showing layouts, explanations are there to show why a layout works, how to do it and simplifies the mystique behind all the necessary tools and not so necessary tools.I wish I had bought this book before spending money on stuff I didn't really need. You won't regret this purchase if you are a beginner and it also makes a great gift for someone thinking about scrapping.Guaranteed to rev your creativity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for the beginner
If you are new or fairly new to scrapbooking, this book will help you with organization, picture taking, details about products you will need and conservation and storage. The book also includes stencils and templates which can be removed and used on photos and cardstock. The spiral binding is an added plus because the book lays flat when open. Well worth the purchase price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrapbook Teacher
This is a great book encompassing every aspect of scrapbooking for the beginner and experienced crafter. It's easy to read and understand, offering a great deal of layouts. I couldn't put it down. This book will definitely take the fear out of beginning scrapbookers and challenge others to try new techniques. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A very elementary attempt at Video lighting
I don't usually criticize a book too badly, but this one just isn't cutting it (or the light for that matter)...it's so basic that if you have any knowledge of basic photographic lighting, don't even bother with this one because it's all repetition.I wanted to learn about lighting for subject movement and most of this is people sitting on their duffs (which is about 20% of the time)..you can tell the author photographs mostly sitting subjects - he may as well be a still photographer! And when he talks about onset and offset lighting, he says arrange it until it looks good - nothing is said about broad or short lighting and how it can flatter a thin or round face....He forgot about the most important thing - the subject.I teach a photographic lighting class, and this would not even be close to the book I would recommend. If you really want to learn about lighting, buy the book called: Set Lighting Technician's Handbook for film lighting equipment, Practice and electrical distribution by Harry C. Box.(this is really his name)....Anyhow, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my expensive copy of Lighting for Video - I may use it for my next subject to sit on to raise their elevation for a photo - that's about all it is good for. Sorry, but horrible attempt at giving good examples of real life lighting situations - MOVEMENT !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent detail for the beginner
Lighting for video (or film) is really an artform in itself.Using different combinations of light sources can make your shot look fantastic.............but you really need to know what you're doing. This book teaches you that.It goes into great detail about electricity and how easy it is to overload a circuit and damage equipment, or worse yet, start a fire.Extremely important information to know.I've seen too many people who just plug lights in willy-nilly and when the inevitable disaster strikes just throw the breaker switch and 'give it another go'.This is essential reading for anyone wanting to use lighting for their productions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Seen
This book is very detailed but lays things out in a way that

About Mario Testino and his work:
5-0 out of 5 stars Testino's portraits stunning
This collection is superb and the size of the book is well chosen to display the images. It's a well rounded selection, including fashion, editorial, advertising, personal and celebrity. Reproduction of the images is high quality with good resolution and colour. Highly recommended to Testino fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars This could be your book.
I think Mario Testino used to be a waiter. Be fearless, you can do it. All you need is a point of view. Use the shotgun approach to photography - shoot shoot shoot and you'll get at least one good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest book of photos on Detroit
I got this book from my library through an ILL, and this book is GREAT! I am 17 and planning on relocating to Detroit, and wanted to see what the city looks like. This book is the only one with actual photos of Detroit in and around the city. Wonderful pictures from earlier times until now. The book was so good, I went out and bought it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to see detroit or for anyone who wants to see one of the best cities in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book for AC's
Of the two major "textbooks" on ACing, this is the best one to start with. It gives enough information to initiate you into what is expected of all members of the camera crew, but is not overwhelming with technical info (not that you are not going to want that info someday, but if you are new, it can be confusing and even discouraging.) After this book, get David Elkin's Camera Assistant's Manual, which goes into much further detail. As you work with different cameras, download the manuals from the panavision/arri/aaton/etc websites so you can feel comfortable with the differences in individual cameras. Lastly, get a used copy of the very expensive American Cinematographer Manual for all the technical bits in one handy portable reference book. This, and tons of set experience, is probably all you need (and keep in mind some of the greatest cinematographers who ever lived worked without any of these aids). Rely on your eye!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Camera Assistant - A Complete Pro Handbook(Hart)
This is probably the best handbook for this discipline I've ever seen.I bought a copy when I was in the States three years ago - and it was swiped!I plan to prescribe this book for my students from 2001 onwards.Well done !5-0 out of 5 stars The bible for operating camera personnel!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn how to integrate design elements

4-0 out of 5 stars great photos
I purchased this as a gift for my dad, an avid golfer. When I got it, I was a little disappointed at the sparse text....but the photos are great. My dad LOVED the book....

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Balls and Other Bad Lies

Charles Lindsay has captured the true soul of golf with this photographic journey through some of the most interesting places in the world. 1-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Aperture LOWER VERSIONS
BEWARE.one star just to get your attention!
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
I was given the opportunity to review this book by an acquaintance, and I am very glad for the opportunity. It has totally changed the way I approach my digital workflow. My previous workflow started with a folder for each year, containing a folder for each month.Inside the monthly folders were still other folders for each shoot.I would download my digital RAW files in the root of each shoot folder. Then I would create 3 separate subfolders inside each shoot folder, (1) alt (for altered ), (2) fin (for final), and (3) out (for output).I would place the various iterations of each file in these directories for retrieval and sorting.I would open each RAW file in Nikon Capture and evaluate the shot. Then I would make any necessary alteration and save the required output files, whether for web, print, or archive.Sometimes the images would be opened in Photoshop for further work, and saved back to the same directory structure. This worked fairly well, but it was a very slow process.Finding images weeks, months, and years later was very difficult without going into each directory and looking through the saved files. Now I keep all of my files in the Aperture program, and it allows me to save all of the iterations side-by-side.Even those alterations made in Photoshop are saved as "versions" of my original digital file.It has cut my workflow time down significantly, but even more important, it has allowed me to keep track of all of the versions of my files together, making the finding and printing of previous files manageable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right
I had recently purchased a digital SLR (after decades of film photography) and I had many other scanned images 'from way back when.'And with a fairly big digital project looming, I needed to be 'in the know' with Aperture -- and fast. The book was written well and gave the hands-on learner as well as the visual student something to get a hold of.This is my first Amazon review of a product (though I've purchased a ton of stuff over the years), but I really wanted to give my 'Thumbs Up' to this book for getting me set and ready to go.I did use the book as reference often, as I recalled, "I remember doing this in a lesson... but how.." and Orlando Luna & Ben Long got me prepared.Without much effort I got a photo-journalistic view of a recent wedding, edited & organized and then set up on one of my websites with Aperture. And I can safely say that it wouldn't have happened without this book.THANKS for your effors Orlando & Ben and Peachpress!I would recommend this book first, if you're new to Aperture, before going on to others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
Quality pastel renders par usual with this art of something Pixar. The color theory alone in this book is worth every penny. Great stuff to continue to inspire us fellow artists. One regret, they need to start putting some of the 3-D stills in the book since their work is unlike anything else out there. Overall, a must buy for the artist reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a movie from concept to artwork
The new animated movie CARS comes at you all finished and complete. This is how it came about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated
I purchased this originally, because as well as being a fan of the movie, "Cars", I am an up and coming animator and am very interested in all aspects of animation. In the description it told me the book tells of how the original idea was made into a film and the steps and research taken to do so, so I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer Cowboy Kate, Beauty and Art have never been so mutually exclusive.
Buy this book now, It's going to be devoured by those in the know and it will cost you a fortune! Ethereal and magical are one way to describe Sam Haskins photos, also sexy and fabulous are good adjectives. It would be hard to choose. I ordered this book knowing that it was, and is, a classic, but had no idea of the impact these photos would have. You can tell by the cover that you are in for an emotionally charged ride that you will never forget. There is a slim narrative running throughout these photos, but you as the viewer are allowedto create your own story , and what a story it is. Kate and her cohorts are iconic babes that transcend the 60's. The girl's sheer beauty and playfulness will make you gasp, and even chuckle at their bodaciousness. I won't give away any secrets, but the photo's are remastered and gloriouslybeautiful.You..must...order...now! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - highly recommend it!
Video Shooter is an excellent instructional guide. Braverman's unprecedented expertise and superior storytelling skills help guide readers through all the key topics and everything you'd need to know for professional video shooting and production. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars BARRY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT
What I like most about Mr. Braverman's book is how it speaks not only to the technical side but more so to the creative side. His insights are geared toward using talent and instinct within the given parameters of the tools and medium. The book was a fun and easy read with a humorous, conversational style and lots of pictures (which makes perfect sense given it's a book involving a visual medium). I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to shoot a story (emphasis on STORY) without getting lost in the wonder of technology yet using that very technology only to free up the story. Hats off to Mr. Braverman for a handy how-to guide to get that story shot and out on screens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - A Must-Have
This book far exceeded my expectations, even after reading all the five star reviews. The text is both engaging and informative - a rare combination for what might be termed a "how-to" type book.Braverman's book actually stands as an interesting read aside from the technical and artistic information it imparts. His style is refreshingly candid and his guidance practical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great look at the "White City"
A beautiful collection of images, showing the wonders of the 1893 fair. A great look back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy City
One book leads to another. After reading The Devil in the White City, I wanted to see the Exposition described in the book. It definitely was an amazing sight to see and this book satisfied most of that curiosity. To go one better, I might look for a book that goes even further into that time in life. The city is every bit the accomplishment as described in the afore mentioned book. Where is the America of that artful integrity, that is, to do the best that can be accomplished? Gone to disposable products including much of architecture. ... Read more

My husband and I are taking a beginning Photoshop class at the local adult school. Instead of a more extensive and difficult text we chose to supplement the class with Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies. It moves inmore logical sequence than the class and enabled us to begin editing our photos immediately. It also allowed us to focus onclass instruction without taking notes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
Good reference for ideas of how to do almost anything in Photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Software that's getting ever more powerful
Thee seems to be a trend in software that they have to keep comming up with new releases to get people to send in more money. But after version three or four, it seems that the new features that they are adding aren't really features that you'd use. Look at Microsoft Word, which of the new features do you really use? But also look at WordPad. It's grown until it's about the equivalent of Word 3.0 or something like that. It's faster, smaller, easier to use and pretty much does what you want, in some cases even better than Word itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Consider it an investment!
This book is one of the first things i would grab if my house was on fire!An absolute must-have for MM fans or for anyone interested in photography.Bert Stern writes an account of his photo shoots with Marilyn, providing the reader insight into his experience and the back-story makes the photos even more fascinating. The book also includes prints of the negatives destroyed by Marilyn herself (provoking some controversy over disrespecting MM's obvious wish that the photos not be released). We are given a glimpse into how Marilyn saw herself, as well as how she wished to be perceived by the world, in the months leading up to her death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Showcasing Marilyn Monroe at the height of her all too tragically shortened career
Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) is perhaps America's most famous "sex goddess", a young woman whose life and death have taken on mythic qualities as having been a woman of beauty and sex appeal. Bert Stern is the fashion photographer who was the last to be granted a sitting by Marilyn Monroe six weeks before she died. The photography 3-day sessions was arranged by Vogue magazine and took place at the Los Angeles Bel-Air Hotel. The sessions produces a total of 2,571 photographs (375 in color) and included fashion, portrait, and nude studies from which only twenty went on to publication in Vogue magazine. Now all 2,571 photographs have been collected under one cover in Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting (originally published in 1992 but until now having long been out of print) and are available for Marilyn Monroe fans in this unaltered compendium showcasing Marilyn Monroe at the height of her all too tragically shortened career.
5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn's Last And Best Photos
If you are true Marilyn fan you must get this book. It's more expensive than most coffee table books ($75) but it is so worth it. There are more than 2000 photos in it! The pictures were taken just six weeks before she died. The photos are stunning! Many of them are seminude and I don't think she ever looked better. It's hard to believe this was her last photo session.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, a Disappointment
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, simple to follow
I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer, not a pro.But I enjoy "post processing" my digital images and Photoshop Elements is a good product to use.But there are many nuances to the product and Scott Kelby does an excellent job at presenting those capabilities. His examples are straightforward and useful.I recommend this book highly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Title should also include - How to abuse a picture with photoshop
Granted, there are some nice pics in this booklet and some useful techniques which would be helpful if I had more than one strobe, but I was looking more for practical lighting tips without over-abusing a digital image with Photoshop.Almost 2/3 of the sample photos have some kind of photoshop tampering. That's not photography, that's graphic design.Other than that, I'm glad that I didn't have to pay the $34.95 that was the suggested price on the actual booklet (I paid about $15).Overall, it's good for ideas on how to approach a situation with regards to lighting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stuck in the 80's
As an overall guide to lighting techniques, this book gets all the basics right. However, when it comes to inspiring the reader it doesn't fare so well. Some of the photographs in "The Best of Photographic Lighting" are bordering on attrocious - many of them firmly stuck in the 80's tradition of painful soft lighting ala oldschool Playboy (maybe this shouldn't surprise me, since the cover is much lit this way). Too many tacky pictures of urban saxophone players lit "creatively".
4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Photograpic Lighting: Techniques and Images for Digital Photographers
This is well written book with the basic lighting techniques for the motivated photographer. It is not a tutorial type of book but it provides a starting point which provides the reader the conceptual frame work in order to use lighting. This is a good book that is well illustraded. ... Read more
