5-0 out of 5 stars Great Work
Being that Slim Aarons recently passed away, his work warrants an even closer work. What this book and the equally impressive Once Upon a Time have in common is that they portray true grace, elegance and class that makes todays celebrities look like a bunch of bums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Farewell to a Bygone Era
With the recent death at age eighty of Slim Aarons the end of the time of the 'beautiful people' seems at an end - at least the photo documented class of the rich and famous as seen by the chief photographer of that elite group.
4-0 out of 5 stars Town and Country
Slim Aarons really knew how to capture the jet set of a certain era, his images are so well crafted and the lucky subjects are always shown in there best light, literally and figuratively. The best picture in an array of amazing photography, and one that perfectly captures this rarified air, is the iconic picture of CeZe Guest standing by her pool, it captures all you need to know good and bad, through the prism of a beautiful woman, in a beautiful setting without a seeming care in the world, the very definition of, "To the Manor Born".Mr. Aarons captures so perfectly a life of unapolegetic jet setting opulance, and whether he means to are not he also captures the shallowness of it all, and you wonder, with all of this, are these people really any happier than the rest of us? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars 50's Medical Terms meet the Modern Artist
This book was purchased as required for class. The verbage in the textbook is reminiscent of the types of medical textbooks originating from the 50's.However, once you get past that, the diagrams and sketches are very in depth and descriptive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book has everything and more as far as anatomy for artists goes. The book is complete with excellent illustrations from real pictures to life like illustrations that capture the essence and meaning in the human form as conceptualized by the artist. A definite must have for any artist intrested in the human form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity of form
Peck manages to breakdown scientific understanding of the human form into simple graphic shapes. Up there with Andrew Loomis's work. ... Read more

This book is amazing. It helped take my Photoshop skills to the next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy and be Wowed
I had the pleasure of sitting through Jack's class while on a Geek Cruise called "Macmania" and he refered to his book. I bought it wondering just how good the book would be relative to Jack in the flesh and I have to say that the book presents very well indeed. This is not always true for some teachers but Jack has the gift to be able to clearly and effectively communicate the needed information to make Photoshop sing for non-professional (and even them at times!) users. The title of "how to wow" really does say it all. The book is full of easy to use techniques that will really punch up an average picture to near-fine art quality, assuming it's a good picture to start. And even then, it can really help salvage a picture that might be so-so to a very acceptable picture. Many of the techniques are very easy to use and make alot of sense once you try it once. In my own case, I used his tips on distortionfilters to straighten out a picture of a building in just seconds. No bellows needed or fancy 3rd party filters needed. He shows how to selectively adjust contrast, color, brightness, color correction and alot more without the typical photoshop overhead of a dozen layers and such. He does push the use of raw files and after watching what can be done with raw files, I can see why. But, he does not leave those who can only shoot JPEGs behind, many of tips and tricks work just as well with JPEGs and he demos them that way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but pricey
I'm very new to lighting for any film stock. My goal is to become more aware of how to light for film, mainly digitial stock. This books does provide extremely detailed information on lighting, such as footcandles, gamma, lighting terms and much more, but mainly in one chapter. It did provide detail about digital film lighting and standard photography lighting. I wish it gave more insight about "moods" but I learned a great deal. Downside, it's expensive for the material you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
This book dishes out a lot of information in the small space between it's paperback covers.I read it looking for film lighting basics, and had a tough time grasping some of the more technical language involving exposure, T-stops, etc, even though I have a decent background in photography. The book does a poor job of addressing and explaining these key concepts.I gleaned a decent amount of information from the pictures and diagrams, but they were poorly aligned with the text, requiring lots of flipping back and forth. All in all, I would reccommend this book only to people with a fair amount of knowledge of the physics behind photography and/or film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have

5-0 out of 5 stars The photo studio Bible
The most skillful and creative photographer=the most successful studio photographer(financially)? Wrong. This is THE book everyone who wants his/her own studio should read.Lilley tells how to operate a studio right. No hold back. Not at all.He tells you every aspect you'll run into and what you should do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellento!!!
I have never bother myself to write review on any books that I read :( but this book impressed me so much that I feel it is not fair to be passive and not let the potential readers know how great is this book. I just love how organize and detail oriented is the author and this is one of the best professional book that I have ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Start a Business Without It
I bought this book based on the very positive reviews on Amazon. It's apparent why this book is rated so highly. The author exudes common sense. We all like to think we're common sensical people, but sometimes our opinions and the ideas we form keep us from seeing the entire picture. That's where this book comes in.The author relays his vast photography business experience in terms that we can easily comprehend. His style is very encouraging versus a lot of warnings.Anyone who is even in the thinking stages of starting a photography business - whether on a small scale or large - owes it to themselves to read this book first. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
This book is written to address directly the kinds of procedures that photographers want to know about Photoshop. Instead of looking at Photoshop from a programmer's perspective (i.e. here are all of the cool things the crop tool can do) Kelby approaches Photoshop from the other side, in a humorous and simple style that starts with what the PHOTOGRAPHER wants to do and then tells you which tools to use and how. If you are looking for a manual that lets you quickly and simply do what you want, get this. By the way, many of the techniques will work with Photoshop Elements. In other words, for under a hundred bucks you can buy this book and Photoshop Elements and do some fantastic things to your photographs. Great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good quick reference
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to handle common tasks within Photoshop. The book targets the novice user who has not yet mastered Photoshop.Scott Kelby takes a light-hearted approach to many of the common tasks and every step is illustrated with colorful screen shots. The text avoids technical jargon and is written in conversational language. The price is right and it is well worth the purchase.Do not purchase this book if you want to gain a mastery over PS and want to know the intricities of the application.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Yenne for the past
Bill Yenne's photographic essay about the similarities and differences between San Francisco's past and present is one of several "past and present" photographic themes published by Thunder Bay Press involving a number of prominent American cities.4-0 out of 5 stars See for your self
When visiting S.F., one couldn't help wonder about the history of this "young city". When walking the Embarcadero, reading all the "history stands", you wish you could go back in time and see what it was really like. I did just that, when i bougth this book. It made it possible to visit some of the buildings that still exists and visit places that once was.5-0 out of 5 stars nice book
What makes this book special for me is the "now" photographs. The book's editor/photographer has made a sincere attempt to reshoot the photos, physically, from as nearly as possible from the original, without changing the photographic perspective. This allows the books' reader to view and compare the photos and know that streets, buildings, and other landmarks give an accurate view of how the city looked at a certain time.Accurate directions and locations listed in both historical and contemporary photos greatly enchances the value and arm chair travelers' enjoyment of the book. Buy a map of the city if you're not familiar with it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Posing for high school seniors
I bought this book to try to learn some useful poses for my subjects, and given most other people's ratings, I decided to give it a try. However, upon opening the book my first thought was, "these all look like high school yearbook photos", which is exacltly what they are.It seems that that's primarily what type of photography the author does and his book is geared almost exclusively to that market. His main concern, which he stresses throughout the book, is creating a "saleable picture", and he keeps emphasizing the importance of pleasing mom, since she's usually the one with final say over the pictures.A better title for this book would have been, "How To Take High School Senior Pictures".

2-0 out of 5 stars don'twaste your money!!
While I very much enjoyed Miss Wearstler's first book, I found Domicilium Decoratus to be borderline obnoxious. Rather than show great decorating, the book focused mainly on close up shots of objects in her house that took up the whole page.In addition, I feel that as the viewer of the book I do not need to see fifteen entirepages of Miss Wearstler dressed in ball gowns pretending to be domestic.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Nude
Do girls enjoy seeing beautiful naked girls? You bet we do, and few photographers as far as I can see find more beautiful girls or photograph them more beautifully. This is not a book to race through but a book to savour, honest, natural, totally real, Petter Hegre has taken the new nude to new limits of human endeavour. I can't wait to see the next one. 3-0 out of 5 stars Too small
To my eye, the models are wonderful, charming. The compositions are good to great. The phototechnical quality is excellent throughout the book. But the physical size of the page is simply too small! What is worse, many pages feature several photos at once, or a single photo accompanied by text. In other words, many (nice) photos occupy much less than one page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Little Something for Everyone From the Novice to the Professional
This book by Scott Kelby and Felix Nelson has a little something for everyone from the novice to the professional. Especially for the novice, each tip is fully illustrated with complete and easy to follow instructions. Also, I especially liked that there was no CD or image downloads. Because the authors did not rely on any sample images, the instructions are general enough to be used in many situations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Reference
I loved this book but it took a lot of effort to read it.That may sound funny but the format of this book is nothing but tip after tip after tip and that can get old pretty quick. If you can stand it, read through the whole thing. Then you'll find yourself either using the tips you've learned, or like me stopping and saying to yourself, "Uh, wasn't there a tip about how to do this faster?" at which point you refer back to the book and find the quicker way to do what you were doing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just the tips
Some Photoshop books purport to teach you how to use Adobe's flagship image editor. Others help you sharpen your skills. This one simply presents an array of useful and unusual tips, and it's hard to argue with that. The techniquews are clearly presented, and should appeal to any level of expertise.Whether you are stillattempting to scrabble up the learning curve, or are already a Photoshop veteran, you'll find something to use within the pages of this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome book!
As a professional wildlife photographer I have always shied away from spending too much time correcting my images on Photoshop because a) I don't have the time and b) the books are too geeky and boring. That is until I got hold of Rob Sheppard's book. For the first time I have understood the benefits of complex tools like adjustment layers and Rob's workflow style approach has really had an effect on my workflow.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Photoshop book for any type of photographer
Sheppard works through a series of photographs showing when, why and how to use the various Photoshop tools.Unlike most other Photoshop books, this one focuses on establishing a workflow.
2-0 out of 5 stars Jack of all trades master of none
I really wanted this book to be better. I got this book after reading an excerpt from it in Outdoor Photographer magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive D70s Guide Book
The smartest thing I did this year was move from a Coolpix point shoot camera to a Nikon D70s.The second smartest thing I did was buy this book.It was quite a step up for me to get a D-SLR, but this Digital Field Guide made the transition easy. It served as a welcome introduction to all the camera's features. Plus it showed me how much more there is to photography with an advanced camera. This book helped me become more comfortable with my new D70s and has launched me on the road to being a better photographer.

5-0 out of 5 stars This will teach you how to use your D70s
I use a Nikon D50 myself, but I got this for my friends birthday as I liked the version for my camera. The D70 Digital Field Guide makes it very easy to learn to use this digital Single Lens Reflex camera. It has illustrations that show all the functions and how to make settings, along with example photos of how to shoot in various types of situations. The Digital Field Guides are much easier to understand than the manuals that come with the cameras.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite useful
This book provides everything you need to begin using your D70. It includes tons of information that's not in the manual, and was quite in-depth in its treatment of using camera controls and options, with many examples of how you might want to apply various focus, exposure, and other settings.
