An Excellent book for the Doré or Dante lover
The quality of this book - along with an amazingly affordable price tag - quickly persuaded me to pick up a copy. Its really everything you could ask for in an art book;
Absolutely Wonderful (Really 4 and a half stars)
I have looked at a variety of Dante artists. Some well known and some are not. Suloni Robertson, John Flaxman, Willam Blake, Sandro Botticelli, Sandow Birk, Herb Roe. Do a google search to look at the works of some of these like Sandow Birk. There are some that are more obscure which in a way documents the Comedy, more specifically the Inferno. I'm not going to say who I don't like but Dore is the best. I am rather specific about artists. Dore makes the grade. He is good, really good and when you look at this book, you feel like you are in the terrible depths of hell. I like purgatorio too. I feel the religious prayer songs in my head as I see Beatrice's entrance. There is so much symbolism in these pictures, especially in Paradiso. Though I do disagree with the depiction of Muhammad in hell, the rest is fantastic. I mean that he looks more like he's British then Middle Eastern. I imagine him with blonde hair in the plate. The tortured look on Dante's face in the plate with Betrand de Born, (The cover pic) is extraordinary. I felt how he felt. That is why Dore is so good. I had also hoped for more detail with Ugolino because his story is fantastically horrifying.
The Dore's Illustrations for Dante's Commedia are great.
The Illustrations from the 1st canto in the Inferno to the last of Paradiso are great because they help as a visual aid when reading the Divina Commedia.One can really see how and in which ways Dore, when he design the illustrations, followed the text very closely. ... Read more

Keep looking;you'll find it....
This book has been around since 1994 and is still a lot of fun.These 3-D images seem to have reached their peak in the early 90's ;as far as I know anyway.I particularly enjoyed the Forward.Tom Baccei talks about their resident wizard."Some say that although his bulb seems good,his filament is short a few twists." Entertaining, but doesn't have lasting power.
This book contains 25 pictures, two of which are three-dimensional patterns.The remaining 23 pictures appear to be just colorful patterns to the untrained eye (as it appears on the cover), but when seen properly, three-dimensional shapes zoom out of the colorful pages.Read more

Educationally Priceless!

If you need a book like this, you can do better.
I have two books currently which are much better than this one.I'm not really interested in spending the next hour of my life typing up a really exhaustive commentary on this book, as this is the first one I've ever done, but I'm just hoping to save you some time and money and I feel very strongly this is a bad book and a waste of your efforts.

Really cool pictures
I love looking through this book, Halloween is my favorite holiday and these old graphics make me feel all nostalgic. I even got one of the pictures tattooed on my back shoulder. Cool book.

Powerful Catalyst
Like the Tarot, the images here are universal and transformative.They have the additional benefit of a wry sense of humor and subtle undercurrents of a humanist sensibility. Pure Inspiration
When my sister gave me this book for my birthday, it was one of the greatest presents I ever received.I was inspired, comforted, and emboldened by Masereel's wordless tale of a questing spirit.Despite thefact that I've read it literally hundreds of times (almost every night whenI was working in Calcutta), I always see something new in the subtle,highly expressive woodcuts.Besides the brilliance of his technique, thestory Maserel tells is exciting, complex, hilarious and moving.A treaureI wouldn't trade for practically anything.

Outstanding introduction
If you're going to have just one book on the wide world of printmaking, make it this one. Despite its heft, over 400 pages in large format, it almost comes across as rushed. I don't mean sloppily done, quite the opposite, but with just so much to say that the pages can barely hold it all.

Directed at the expert, fine for the fan, too!
I would like to add to the reviews below that this book is a pleasure to hold and to view because it is so well made.If there is any 'art' book that should be made for posterity it is the catalog raisonne of an artist.In this instance, the publisher has done the artist's audience a real service for, the book is beautifully printed and bound in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi; Italy seeming to have usurped Switzerland's place as the world's premier art book printer.The pages are thick and glossy and the reproduction is top notch. Must have for afficionados!
The prints in this book are fantastic, large with great color reproduction. It also an excellent read for anyone interested in japanese woodblock printing. An all round excellent book.

vividly orgasmic in visual and poetic aspects
The cover even makes me kind of wonder. Its paperback although the pages are pretty durable. I like the little stories about each character. The pictures are breathtaking and beautiful.

Of all the superb books published by Hotei on the subject of Japanese woodblock prints, Inge Klompmakers' "Of Brigands and Bravery: Kuniyoshi's Heroes of the Suikoden" is far and away my favorite.This reflects not only my enthusiasm for the 19th-century artist Kuniyoshi but also an appreciation of the rich symbolism embedded in his treatment of the "Suikoden" heroes.Read more

I have always wanted to make my own art stamps but never knew how or where to begin. Thanks to Art Stamping Workshop, all of my questions have been answered! After reading this fabulous book, I was able to create a stamp from items I had around the house. Gloria's instructions are easy to follow and the photos clearly show how each step is supposed to look as you go along. Gloria Page makes stamp carving easy and FUN! The variety of projects in this book are different from anything I have seen in other stamping books and are easily adaptable to any style.

Young man crazy about this book
Looking at this collection really shows the diversity in Hokusai's long career. In one of the essays, the writter comments that Hokusai changes his style so much that his work looks like the work of a different artist. The breath of this volume helps the viewer see how creative and inventive this master is. What I like about Hokusai is that his personal life is just as interesting as his work. The essays included do a good job placing the differnent periods in context with the times and Hokusai's own massive body of work.

The definitive collection
There are two or three different collections of Hokusai's works in print this Fall (2003), and of them this is the best. The others are good, solid selections of his material, but this combines an encyclopedic sweep of nearly all of his available prints (including ones rarely seen, such as his erotic prints) with a superb color printing. One for the reference shelf
I'm so glad I bought this book. It is one of those I take down regularly. The author thoroughly understands monotype in many mediums. A previous reviewer mentioned how well the toxicity issue was dealt with. Lots of good color illustration.

Great book for monoprinting
I agree with the previous reviews - if you're creating monoprints, and particularly if you're looking for non-toxic methods, this is a great book. It's full color with many inspiring illustrations, and full of useful, practical information written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner.
Great demonstation of incredible effects using monotype
There seems to be very limited information available on the technique of monotype. This book fills that void by demonstrating the incredible variety of effects possible using the monotype method. There are no projects, per se, rather it teaches techniques that help you create your own masterpieces. Many pieces of example artwork are found throughout the book.Read more

Very complete and easy to follow
Great book. He covers all the material in depth but manages to keep it easy to follow for the novice printmaker with clear, well illustrated, step by step instructions. The process of printmaking is much more enjoyable without having to deal with acids, fumes and the related health issues.
