5-0 out of 5 stars A life as funny as his work...
Peter Falk has written the ultimate autobiography, although Mr. Falk himself insists that it isn't an autobiography. The book is written in short chunks, each a hilarious anecdote from his life, which would make it very easy to put down between stories--except that it is so much fun that you can't put it down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Falk, at his best
This book deserves more than five stars: it is Peter Falk at his best... the great actor can entertain in many roles.. as actor, as artist, as author. He has a lot of interesting stories to tell. And he does it in a brilliant way. He brings us a lot of interesting stories - about his life and work. No doubt, Peter Falk is one of the greatest!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Popular Treatment of the Darwin v. Design Debate
The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design is an excellent introduction to the new and emerging Darwin vs. design debate. Biologist Jonathan Wells' book is an especially helpful primer to general audience readers who only hear about this controversy through elite media/old media accounts. This publication succeeds as both an informative and entertaining read.
1-0 out of 5 stars Science through a public relations campaign
In a society that tends to believe in creationism, Wells continues the politically correct campaign to change minds through public appeal instead of research.Science is a slow process that requires evidence presented to academic peers for the process of a slow paradigm shift to occur.Since ID has no evidence other than a longing from the dominant political group in the US, it is nothing more than faith.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bad science easily rebutted
This book is embarassing.Even worse than Icons of Evolution. What he presents as science is mostly a mix of ignorance and outright lies. There are many sites by real scientists which expose Wells' errors and fabrications step by step (Panda's Thumb is a good one.) Anybody who is unfamiliar with the actual scientific literature on evolution would be well advised to visit one of those sites and at least begin the process of self education. If you do, you will quickly see how unreliable Wells is as a science writer. ... Jesus, what a narcassist, I mean is this guy for real. Why do people buy into this idiot with the ridiculous comb over; the emperor has no clothes, people! The only reason he has any money is because the banks could not afford to call in his notes, he had such staggering debt, he would have sunk the bank..id love to know what his net worth really is..but you have to give the guy credit he does know how to get press, and his spawn seen to be a chip off the old comb over, they are as arrogant and frankly unattractive as he is, though i must admit his new child is a really cute kid...maybe a paternity test is in order. How to get rich...drive up ur debt to such a level, and owe so many creditors that they cannot afford to call in your debt..priceless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mindless and Harmless Entertainment:And Yes, A Fun Read
I have a terrible confession to make: I have read all of his books. Do I love trump? No, but it is fun to read about Trump. His buildings are beautiful and he is a fascinating person. Having said that his books have a high degree of self promotion, and if you read some of the other unauthorized books you begin to understand that he is a complicated person, much more so than revealed in these books that he writes.

I dont know how to rate this!! The book... I am yet to read! But I received collectorS edition within a collector edition! The book is printed upside down while the cover page is printed straight!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life of Vladek
The combination of volume one and volume two of Maus instills emotion, unfelt by any Holocaust story.Spiegelman (hey that's me; so of coarse it's a must read) implements humor, details, and characters that allow for a stunning plot of the life of his father Vladek. The relationship between Mala and Vladek, is humorous and tragic at the same time. I don't want to reveal too much plot, but would like to end writing the animals characterizations of personalities is ingenious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

Editorial Review

Even at his most irate, Jimmy Carter projects cool, communicating with a poise that commands attention while gently signaling to opponents that they better do their homework before mounting any sort of debate. Perhaps that's why the former president, Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and bestselling author ranks as one of the planet's most respected voices in the areas of human rights, diplomacy, and good government. And when a clearly agitated Carter suggests America is on a slippery slope, globally speaking, as he does throughout Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
Even though I am biased towards Jimmy, I was a little disappointed by this book. While some sections are very succinct and Jimmy is clearly writing from the heart, for $15 one would expect a little more analysis and explanation of the major issues of the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book for our times
I bought this book from the UK amazon under the title Faith & Freedom. It is an eye-opening account of how religious fundamentalists have managed to leave the impact of their worst attitudes of intolerance, self-righteousness, and belligerence on American domestic and foreign politics, something that concerns me as a UK citizen, because that which significantly affects the most powerful country on the planet is liable to have repercussions elsewhere. But after its eye-opening, soberingcontent, the book ends with a more gracious tone, encouraging Americans to return to a renewed commitment towards their own best ideals in a way that is reflected in the country's dealings with the rest of the world. May this happen, else America's reputation could undergo irreversible damage. Hopefully this excellent book will exert a wide and good influence. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An accurate, honest and true account of the state of our country.
Absolutely the best non-fiction book-on-dvd I've ever listened to. President Carter gives an accurate and honest account of the political, social and physical changes currently dividing the American society under this current administration. I remember as a young girl hearing a White House biographer say that it would be years after President Carter's administration that we would appreciate his intelligence and the contributions he made to peace and the strength of the nation. I think this book brings that prediction to fruition. What a shame that we don't have a leader who cares about the future of the country and the people's well being.

Ron Suskind won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1995 for his stories on Cedric Jennings, a talented black teenager struggling to succeed in one of the worst public high schools in Washington, D.C. Suskind has expanded those features into a full-length nonfiction narrative, following Jennings beyond his high-school graduation to Brown University, and in the tradition of Leon Dash's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant and insightful story
What does it take to overcome great obstacles and find the best in oneself? The author found a young man named Cedric Jennings to explore this question. The author observes Cedric's life in a uniquely honest way. We are able to experience first-hand the often painful and complicated emotions of young people who grow up in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods and broken homes. The day to day experiences of these young people often necessitate the need to focus on emotional and financial survival, rather than intellectual pursuits or personal aspirations.
4-0 out of 5 stars A tale of a boy who made it out...
This book would typically not be on my list of interesting reading; but the book was for college so I thought I would read it.To my great suprise, the book actually made emotions run through my body when I read it.It wasn't that these experiences were personal for me; but I recognized the struggle I had seen so often and how I seemed to be a part of the "majority" who didn't know any better. This seemed to bother me the most, I kept asking myself, "Am I really that ignorant?".The answer unfortunetly was yes, I really had become just another example of something the minority had to struggle so hard against to succeed. The idea that my suburban schools were far ahead of all the inner city schools seemed almost ludicrous. The more I looked into it, the more I realized that this struggle has been going on longer than I have lived, and that even though I feel bad for the minority; I still continue to live my life casually without sticking my neck out for others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grasping for the Gold Ring
"A Hope in the Unseen" provides insight into an ambitious, Africian American highschooler's mind as he pursues good grades and a life of integrity. Cedric, a Ballou High School student from Washington, DC, shares his journey with us as he, not only plans to graduate from high school as an honor student, but also heads into an Ivy League college and steps into his career with dignity.Great read for any one desiring to take responsibility of their own life and go for the "gold". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Carlo...brilliant
A must read for anyone curious about the mafia world, cold hearted killers, and just all around fabulous reading. My hats off to Philip Carlo for writing a materpiece that I just couldn't put down.Page after page he diligently wrote the account of Mr. Kuklinski's life, from enduring sadistic brutality at the hands of his parents, to the very end which brought tears to my eyes. How could you expect Mr. K to be anything else in life other than what he was, after all, his exposure to death and killing was experienced first hand as a child.Thank you Mr. Carlo for being by my side for the last week while I read word for word, the chilling accounts of this killer, always seeing the sensitive side of this man when it came to his family and children.Mr. Kuklinski was a gentle soul, he just wasn't shown enough love and affection in his life. Thanks again. Can't wait to read your other writings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this down....
Richard Kuklinski, though a killer, was also a very troubled human being. Having two parents that barely raised their children, but used their hands, brooms, etc to punish their children and never nurtured them. To even not take responsibility for killing one of their first born son, Flarian.
5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Kuklinski: The Full Story
I was born in Brooklyn, NY in November 1983 and moved to Hillsdale, NJ (Bergen County) in January 1985.Throughout my life, I heard stories from my parents and grandmother about the Mafia and about the murders that occurred in my old neighborhood.I have always been fascinated by La Cosa Nostra and the Mafia and have read numerous books, watched countless movies and documentaries, and written numerous papers on the topic. After reading all of these different books, I want to commend Mr. Carlo on your work about Richard Kuklinski. This biography was by far the most interesting piece that I have ever read and in my humble opinion, truly captured the essence of a psychopathic serial killer and underworld of the Mafia.

Editorial Review

A beloved classic since its initial publication in 1947, this vivid, insightful journal is a fitting memorial to the gifted Jewish teenager who died at Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in 1945. Born in 1929, Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her marvelously detailed, engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic, quarrelsome intimacy with her parents, sister, a second family, and a middle-aged dentist who has little tolerance for Anne's vivacity. The diary's universal appeal stems from its riveting blend of the grubby particulars of life during wartime (scant, bad food; shabby, outgrown clothes that can't be replaced; constant fear of discovery) and candid discussion of emotions familiar to every adolescent (everyone criticizes me, no one sees my real nature, when will I be loved?). Yet Frank was no ordinary teen: the later entries reveal a sense of compassion and a spiritual depth remarkable in a girl barely 15. Her death epitomizes the madness of the Holocaust, but for the millions who meet Anne through her diary, it is also a very individual loss. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Anne Frank, better than ever'
'The Diary Of A Young Girl: The Definitive edition' is more or less the un-cut version of the book that was originally published in the late 1940's. it contains approx. 30% more material, and in my opinion makes Anne more relatable than ever, particularly to adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great biography book
This book is a very good read to say at least -- nicely written with good details of Warren Buffett's mentality, strategy, and learning process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique account of Buffett's rise to financial stardom
A rare account of Buffett's life and financial ventures, detailing several milestones in the evolution of Buffett from wiz kid to financial guru.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent financial biography
Buffett is a fantastic biography on one of the 20th century's most well-known investors. Far from being just a financial volume or a how-to-invest-like-Buffett, Lowenstein's work is a genuine biography, and a very well-written one at that. That's not to say one cannot learn something about Buffett's investing style by reading this book; in fact, I believe I learned more about how the man has been so successful from this book than from any other source on Buffett.

This work was well-drawn, as is all of Bechdel's work.It was also incredibly boring, kind of aimless, self-absorbed catharsis.I also thought we'd get to know more about her father's life, thoughts, feelings...along with hers.

I stumbled into this book and couldn't be happier about it.I knew nothing about Alison Bechdel other than what I read in the author's blurb on the dust cover so I certainly wasn't brought to the book by the lesbian aspect.Nor had I ever read a memoir graphic so that wasn't a hook either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Troubling
In STORM the Germans are an impersonal calamity, like Katrina. We see French of every class and sort scatter like ants whose anthill has just been stepped on. There's good sardonic social observation here and I'm afraid it's probably accurate. But as a reader you sit and feel rather smug at the spectacle. In DOLCE we meet the German occupiers. They are not the evil Huns we have met hundreds of times in the war movies. They have names, faces and, be it confessed, impeccable behavior.(The irony of what was in store for the author is heavy here.) But the troubling part is how naturally so many of the French in this particular village fall into the routine of collaboration.Without judging or condemning, Nemirovsky shows us how it must have happened. The scenes are so vivid here you can't help placing yourself there, and wondering if you would have been a whit more heroic. Or, for that matter, if you had been one of the Germans, would you have been much different than they? Be honest.
5-0 out of 5 stars How it was possible
Reading these two novellas was, for me, like standing for hours, looking at painting after painting by a great artist. For every page, every chapter was filled with amazing colorful details; the details that make up the lives of those populating these novellas--lives torn apart by the terrible earthquake that results from a defeat.

Storm in June is the best book I've read since Vikram Seth's An Equal Music. The second part of Suite Francaise is good, but Storm in June is a gem everyone will love.I didn't expect to laugh out loud with the Nazi's at the door.Happy reading.I'm wondering when Nemirovsky's earlier novels will be translated into English. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding - Helps One Appreciate What We Have in the U.S.!
Pomfret provides insight into China's Cultural Revolution through the eyes of his classmates at a Chinese university who participated. The result of youths gone wild, even abusing their own parents for trivial issues, is bone-chilling, almost otherwise unimaginable. We also learn of serious discrimination against females during that same time period.Everyone is encouraged/required to report on each other for any form of non-conformist behavior.
3-0 out of 5 stars Class Struggles
Not a bad book, but unworthy of the rave reviews given by many.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but a period piece only, and already dated
There's been something of a buzz going around the China blog world concerning this book, so I picked it up to see what the fuss was about. John Pomfret is one of the better China journalists, certainly light years beyond Nicholas Kristof, although his coverage never grabbed my attention like that of Patrick Tyler or Seth Faison. He definitely has the bona fides, however, having spent a couple of years as a student in the PRC almost immediately after it opened up to the West, and as a reporter in the country during the events of spring and summer in 1989.

Editorial Review

Donald Trump doesn't pull any punches when he surveys the American political scene: Pat Buchanan's "totally lost it," Al Gore is "an able, underrated man who seems confused," and Bill Bradley is simply a "disaster." But the real estate tycoon has some ideas of his own about how the United States should be run, and he shares them with the potential electorate for the 2000 presidential race in Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Who Can Disagree With The Title?
I think most anyone would agree with Mr. Trump that the America he describes within this book would be an ideal nation. The problem is, Donald Trump does not know anymore than anyone else about how to achieve the problems he very practically identifies. The math of what's lacking in this book could be described with an equation like this: A+X=C. A is where we are today in the America we have, C is the "America we deserve" now what is X that would get us to C? I have no idea. I wish someone knew.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Trump prose mixed with logic and wit
It's about time a guy like Donald Trump published this book. Whether you love him, hate him, or want him to fix his hair, The Donald presents fresh takes on age-old arguments and explains why he has what it takes.5-0 out of 5 stars Trump beat Gore and he didn't even run!
According to surveys taken at that time, Trump was ahead of Gore and just behind G.W.Bush. No doubt if Trump would have run, Gore would have blamed him too!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars beatle fans can really appreciate it
reading this book, as long as you know most beatle songs, will give you a better understanding and appreciation for the beatles. someone let me borrow it, and i have no background in audio production, but you begin to understand it through emerick's clear descriptions. He points out little things that happened in the studio that one would never catch. It's fun to read about it then play back the song and know where a certain lyric or idea came from. Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's View of Beatle Music Making!
In the early 1960s Geoff Emerick landed the dream job music fans would have killed for; assistant recording engineer at EMI Studio working with George Martin. It was a dream job because one of the first groups Emerick worked with was the Beatles. The next seven years of musical magic and misery Emerick spent in the control room are wonderfully chronicled in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective
This book is a unique perspective on The Beatles phenomenon.Admittedly, the author does give his opinion of the individual Beatles, but he acknowledges clearly that his perspective was entirely based upon observation and interaction in the studio. Therefore, all of the sound and fury expended in other reviews defending or attacking the author over his opinions of the individual personalities of the Beatles misses the point. This man was present at the creation of many of the most memorable Beatles records. He admits that he had limited contact with the individual Beatles, but what contact he had he recalls. Most of what he says about them individually is not new.We all know that Lennon was out of it for a lot of the time in the 1967-68 time period, and we all know that McCartney was the best all around musician of the bunch.Knowing that says nothing about the band, or who was the leader, or who wrote the best songs, or anything else.To the contrary, the impression one is left with of the personality sketches in this book is that the band was just that, a band, and that each individual made a contribution. The fact that the author had limited contact with George Harrison, for example, or that his contacts with Harrison were not always positive, is just one man's experience, and says little about Harrison.
