5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for Newhart fans
Seeing on Amazon that there is an audio CD of this book makes me wish I had listened to that instead. If only to hear the amazingly funny stories that Bob tells so well. This book is like a breath of fresh air for all those who enjoy Bob Newhart's subtle and yet hysterical brand of comedy. Reading this book makes me wish his fantastic TV shows were still on in syndication somewhere. He tells his life story with the same dry wit that he tells all of his jokes. This book is a must for anyone who is a Newhart fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE, BUT SLIGHT.
I've recently rediscovered THE BOB NEWHART SHOW on DVD and it more than stands up to my memory of it being one of the funniest TV comedies of the '70s.I was also a fan of NEWHART in the '80s and Bob's deadpan performance at this year's Emmys made me laugh out loud.So the release of Newhart's autobiography dovetailed nicely with my renewed interest in Mr. Newhart and I was especially curious to read his recollections of his years on television.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good For Getting Your Mind Off Other Things
"I Shouldn't Even Be Doing This" is Bob Newhart's biography, with whimsical insights into his early life, tentative beginnings in comedy, and then on to "The Bob Newhart" show and stardom. As one would expect, the book is both laidback and interesting; even better it helps fill your mind with more relaxing thoughts after being broadsided with countless stories about Rep. Foley, North Korea's "bomb" (?), Iraq, Iran's pursuit of nuclear (?), Woodward's latest book, falling house prices, the stock market bubble (part II), and Barbra Streisland's latest outburst.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I understand the private Hepburn
I could never understand why Kate Hepburn would be so in love with a weak, drunk like Tracy. I never thought he could act.He just played his bully self again and again. It never made sense what was his deep guilt that made him drink. Now we know he drank because he was gay and could not cope.Very detailed when and with whom by the author.Explains how their relationship fit both their needs. At least 100 pages of footnotes, names, names.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great, enjoyable read and a must have for Kate collections!
The first thing I look for in any book is a great storytelling style; one that makes me want to turn the pages and leaves me happy that I bought the book. William Mann's story of Katherine Hepburn is certainly that kind of read. Enjoyable, witty and well researched. Never stiff or boring, he asks the questions that other bios have seemed to tip-toe around. What exactly were Ms Heburn's relationships like and with whom? There are tidbits of Kate's childhood that I found fascinating as well as tales of that old-guard Hollywood machine we know as the "Golden Age".
4-0 out of 5 stars The Private Affairs and Staunchly Maintained Public Persona of Kate the Great
That Katharine Hepburn was consciously defining and redefining her feisty, self-reliant persona for the purposes of public endearment and career longevity would seem to be an understatement, according to film historian William J. Mann's new biography of the legendary actress. The contrast between this specifically deliberate image and her private self, in particular, her love life, is the focus of the book. However, instead of the expected gossipy, posthumous dismantling of Hepburn, the author takes a more sobering look at what motivated her to maintain this dichotomy throughout her life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Witty
Whatever possessed a girl to openly admit she had a lot of one night stands, never mind write a book about it, is beyond me. Although it's witty, it's clever, it's eye-opening, it's just a bit about stuff you don't wanna know? It's all a bit too much information. But the first chapter is really shocking, Chelsea Handler says that the reason she never got into a serious relationship was because she was dared $5 by her older sister to take a photo of their mum & dad. Together. Ewwwwwwwww!!! It probably scarred her for life!
5-0 out of 5 stars She's my best girlfriend!
I received this book as a birthday present and forgot about it at first. A month or so later I read the first page and was hooked. It was as if I was sitting in a bar drinking straight vodka, so I wouldn'tgain weight, of course, while Handler, my best girlfriend, told me about her latest romp in the bedroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Graceful and Often Affecting
Donald Spoto's new biography of Audrey Hepburn will please those who wish to gain a fuller understanding of Ms. Hepburn's private life and rise to stardom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting!!!
I am very impressed with Donald Spoto's review of Audrey Hepburn. Reading Mr. Spoto's biography of Audrey Hepburn shows a huministic side of the actress and woman the world loved and adored. This book is a wonderful addition to Sean Ferrer's book and Barry Paris's book. I am sure anyone that buys this book will enjoy it as much as I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hepburn's Life and Career Skillfully Examined With Sympathy and Offers Some Surprises
There are already a number of posthumous biographies of the fabled star on the market, the most notable being her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer's loving 2003 memoir, "Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers". Author Donald Spoto adds another one, a respectful portrait that may lack the personal detail Ferrer provides but at the same time, allows enough distance from the subject to be a bit more objective. In 1983, Spoto wrote a fascinating profile of Alfred Hitchcock where the legendary filmmaker came across as a repressed, twisted individual whose outlet was the terror he could instill in his films. This time, he etches an in-depth portrait of a woman whose vulnerability, personal insecurity, and innate love of family endeared her to all those exposed to her - Hepburn's inner circle, friends, colleagues, lovers and ultimately the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Karrine Steffans Sees The Light
in that the whole industry exploits vulnerable women of color such as Karrine Steffans.I know some would say that they participated voluntarily but I hear stories such as Ms. Steffans regarding music industry's exploitation and abuse of women who starred in rap videos. The whole hip hop video scene has come under fire recently by all sectors of society for its sexual and violent content.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking something
Karrine's story was gripping, but there was emotion missing. I felt like she was just sitting back, giving a list of things that happened and not really grasping the effects of them. Regardless, I think she is a strong woman and I admire her willingness to say, "ENOUGH!" and get her stuff together.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read
I really liked reading this book. I finished it in one day. At first I felt bad for. Then, as I read more, I thought she was stupid and by the end of the book I questioned whether she learned anything at all. I mean, yes she knows her mistakes, but I dont think she has learned from them. Overall, I think this book was a great read. I would recommended it to anyone who wants to live the Hollywood lifestyle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A life as funny as his work...
Peter Falk has written the ultimate autobiography, although Mr. Falk himself insists that it isn't an autobiography. The book is written in short chunks, each a hilarious anecdote from his life, which would make it very easy to put down between stories--except that it is so much fun that you can't put it down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Falk, at his best
This book deserves more than five stars: it is Peter Falk at his best... the great actor can entertain in many roles.. as actor, as artist, as author. He has a lot of interesting stories to tell. And he does it in a brilliant way. He brings us a lot of interesting stories - about his life and work. No doubt, Peter Falk is one of the greatest!

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a book to relate to
Michael's book is a fantastic account of his life leading up to and including his struggle with dealing with Parkinson's. As a person with a Parkinsonism who was diagnosed after Michael exposed his disease, I can say he truly made it easier for others to deal with this devastating blow. His hiding of the his disease is common of so many people who are diagnosed with PD at crucial points in their lives. An extremely good book about life rocky road, and for those with PD or any illness for that matter who are trying to create a somewhat normal existance for themselves and their families.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great story, very good read.
A friend gave this book to me. It was such a good read. I had no idea Michael was so sick, and had such a difficult life. While I did not respect ways he wasted his body by alcohol, drugs, and stupid habits before he found out, at a still very young age of mid-20s, about his Parkinson's disease, his remarkable change to a new man was a very good story. The anectodes from this book will stay with me, and it has a great message for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
I've been a fan of Michael J. Fox for many years and was sad to learn of his Parkinson's disease.I expected this book to be largely about the disease and Fox's coping with it.However, I was pleasantly surprised to read an honest account of all of the ways he had messed up his life before coming to terms with himself as well as with his disease.Although I don't like to read sad stories of drinking spinning out of control, Fox's matter-of-fact tone and willingness to take full responsibility for his actions was refreshing.I felt privileged to be allowed this glimpse into his life and his psyche, and I ended up liking him better after finishing the book than when I started. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars just a clip job
save your money/don't waste your time reading this book. not only is taraborrelli an atrocious writer, this book is only a clip job. he has no new sources except for a beverly hills hairdresser who's not really giving up any inside info on Liz as he's still doing her hair. he's lifted any anecdotes in this book from all the preceeding Liz books and it's torture to have read his writing. it's stupifying that he even gets published but it shows you that some publishers are desperate for any celebrity book on their list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Biography
I think this book was very good.I liked how the book began with the story of Elizabeth's mother and father and her intense relationship with her mother and how it made her into the actress she is today.I found the book very humorous and very sad at times. But all together I thought the book was informative and engaging.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even bother................
I've been a fan of Elizabeth Taylor's for almost longer than I can remember, and there isn't a book about her that I don't have, but this is one that even I could have done without.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Courage Required...
A lot of people have been critical of Brooke Shields because she has an enormous amount of money and resources (that most of us don't have in order to get help), but I think that's the point of her story; despite the money, fame, and resources, she developed PPD.She was just as helpless as any woman suffering PPD and didn't know what to do. I think Ms. Shields was brave to write so candidly about her experience.Even though I didn't experience severe PPD, I did feel some depression after I had my baby. My birth was similar to Shields', except that I received a blood transfusion in order to save my life. After I came home from the hospital, I had irrational fears (that seemed so rational to me at the time) of having received contaminated blood, that prevented me from continuing to breastfeed, which further depressed me. I also cried in the shower because I thought I was a terrible mother for not breastfeeding, and I felt so alone and unworthy. My husband was supportive and tried to help, but he didn't know what to do to improve the situation. Fortunately, my depression gradually dissipated, and I felt happy, healthy, strong, and I knew then that I would be a great mom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Blues No Small Matter
This is a book I now keep in mind for my soon-to-be new mom friends just in case, that along with the numbers of womens' clinics at various hospitals and health centers that treat post-partum depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for new mothers
This book actually helped me put into words what I was experiencing with postpartum depression.

Alan Alda's autobiography travels a path less taken. Instead of a sensationalist, name-dropping page-turner, Alda writes about his life as a memory play, an exercise in recollecting his childhood, his parents (dad Robert was a veteran on stage, film, and vaudeville), and his career. You want to know about Alda's most famous work, the eleven years on Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Funny
Alan Alda is a funny man. But his book is not. He jumps from here to there leaving one to wonder where he is going with his story. Our book club was anxious to read something different but it was unanimous - thumbs down.

4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining and informative read
I grew up watching M*A*S*H and watched Alda playing one of the presidential candidates on The West Wing.I also remember his campaigning for ERA.When I saw this book, I thought it would be interesting to know a little bit more about the man. This book was a quicker read than I would have thought and was a very interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burnt Toast is Delicious...especially when cooked by Teri
Let me just start with: Wow, Teri Hatcher is amazing. So incredibly inspiring and heart-felt. I truly believe Teri did a wonderful job expressing herself. Her stories were quirky and always enjoyable. I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what happened next in her normal every-day adventures. Not to mention the benefit that comes from reading this book: Her philosophies. Each metaphor and simile is somewhat awe inspiring and helped me to remember the sensibilities I should be holding onto in my life. She talks about finding your own Africa (if you don't read it you won't understand what I mean by Africa) and I can truly say that she makes so much sense.... I can't wait to find my Africa and Teri has motivated me to do so.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some shining moments in a dull landscape
At times this book is charming, witty and heart wrenching.Mostly, though, I got the impression that Teri Hatcher was looking for my approval. She continually talks about her low self-esteem and how hard she tries to be the best mother, actress and person.I felt like she was begging the reader to like her and approve of her.I found the feeling a bit uncomfortable.

4-0 out of 5 stars The working man and his work...
Bruce Campbell made his greatest impact on movie goers in Sam Raimi's brilliantly off beat and bizarre slapstick horror film "Evil Dead 2", then reached out to a greater audience with the more mainstream sequel "Army of Darkness".After playing a variety of bit parts and character moments through the decades he has accumulated an impressive B-movie career, and yet the humble beginnings in mid-west Michigan with his best friend Sam Raimi (director) and their crew of earnest misfits touched and influenced a lot of people interested in film and TV over the years.
5-0 out of 5 stars One word, two syllables:Groovy!
Bruce Campbell has provided an easy guide to getting into Hollywood and it aint pretty. If you're interested in the posh life, be prepared to suffer worse than a dog stuck in the middle of a screeching contest. You'll find out how to prevent yourself from getting infected with "spores" which is most likely why I would never live in Hollywood. Here you learn about what led him onto the path of B movie stardom (which is more respectable than A movie status) and how he's come to terms with enjoying what he does rather than trying to make millions (which he wouldn't mind) and selling out. It's funny how one movie can turn a guy into a cult hero, change his life, and make him realize how special he truly is (and I do mean special). When's the last time an A list celebrity took the time to write a meaningful book, meet the common folk like us (who happen to be directly responsible for the A list status), and be thankful for it. You must read this book. It's not just a movie business guide, but a simple guide to surviving through our biggest acting roles, our lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Me!
I wasn't diagnosed officially with Bipolar II until Wednesday, March 27, 2003, but I'd already had this book for almost ten years at that point...because I'd suspected that I was a manic-depressive since 1991, after seeing a segment about both Bipolar and ADHD on ABC's "20/20" and the follow-up on ABC's "Nightline" that same night.
5-0 out of 5 stars The reality hurts
The reality of living with manic-depressive illness, whether it be you or someone you love, is driven home by Patty Duke's extreme symptoms of this disorder. This book is basically an autobiography of her life but it is also much more. It is very easy to read and informative on the types of bipolar mood swings, the different medications and how they work, which is very helpful to the average person who doesn't understand medical terminology! (like me).I never cared much for The Patty Duke Show, but now have a profound respect for her after reading her history and how she survived. Toward the end of the book are important chapters for spouses, siblings, children, friends and anyone who lives with or cares for a person with bipolar disorder on effective ways to help cope with the stress and therapy. Cases are cited in detailed on "victories" and "failures".It is easy to see where one can work on changing their own reactions to helping the one they care about. This is the first book I have ever seen my husband read in 2 days; he could not put it down. Afterward, he looked at me and started treating me in a new light. I think we will be one of the "victories!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Everyone
I think this book will reach out best to middle-aged women as Patty Duke writes from that perspective. However, I was 18 when my father and I read it together. One of the virtutes of the book is that it isn't just about Patty, but also about the rest of her family. This allows for even the non bipolar afflicted to understand what is happening and how they can help. The fact that Patty Duke is well known is both a positive and a negative:positive because we all know her and negative because how many people live like a star?I think this book presents an accurate portrayal of a colorful illness in a digestible format.I think the book is a good read that will teach you about bipolar even if you aren't trying to learn. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book For Gene Simmons Fans
I bought this book because I am a huge Gene Simmons fan and was hoping to gain some interesting insight into the man through Shannon's experiences of being with him for over 20 years. I was not disappointed. I found out some really neat details of Gene's life 'behind the mask' but I also really gained an appreciation for all that Shannon has gone through and how her wonderful spirit has kept her afloat through life's many hills and valleys. This is one of those books that you just can't put down and it goes really fast, in a good way; a definite 'page-turner'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but not just for women
This is an easy read, I read it in 4 hours. Well written and packed with heartwarming true story of Shannon's life. She's not afraid to tell you details of some deep personal experiences. From childhood to life with Gene Simmons is never boring. She's a strong women who stand tall, never falling like most Playboy playmates. She and Gene blend perfect for a wonderful lasting relationship. She loves Gene and her children, yet lives her life putting shame to other women who torment their partners. Wonderful color photos in the book, not only for the women, but men too. You don't want to let this pass by, it's a great read for all. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of the most recognizable women of our time, America knows Jane Fonda as actress, activist, feminist, wife, and workout guru. In her extraordinary memoir, Fonda divides her life into three acts: her childhood, early films, and first marriage make up act one; her growing career in film, marriage to Ted Turner, and involvement in the Vietnam War belong to act two; and the third act belongs to the future, in which she hopes to "begin living consciously," and inspire others who can learn from her experiences. Fonda reveals intimate details and universal truths that she hopes "can provide a lens through which others can see their lives and how they can live them a little differently."

4-0 out of 5 stars Gutsy...
While never a Jane Fonda fan, I lived in Fayetteville, NC during the Viet Nam era and remember well the evening that Ms. Fonda was in town.If they could, the hawks would have strung her up that night!I have to admit (with extreme embarrassment) that I did not have nearly the courage that she had in standing up AGAINST the war.Essentially this is the reason why I wanted to read her autobiography -- to hear HER side of the story vs some biased take from yet another angry hater of Jane Fonda.I'm glad I took the time to read a very readable book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Growing and Changing
Like many of us, Jane Fonda has spent a large portion of her life trying to figure out her life. She writes honestly about her past, most personal experiences - the happy times and the not so happy times, the good and the not so good, the intimate and the more intimate. Through her writing she openly shares her family, her friendships, and her marriages.
5-0 out of 5 stars intriguing story
I really enjoyed this book.Fonda tells an honest story of someone who is human and not afraid to admit imperfections.I found her candor to be refreshing.I found her strength to move forward to be inspiring. ... Read more
