A lovely, lovely find...
I heard this book discussed briefly earlier this year on the Today Show and decided to order it since, at the time, I was in the throws of my own divorce.Ms. Gilbert chronicles her international journey of self-discovery with such amazing detail and tenderness and humor that I recommend this book to anyone who has found him or herself in a place or state that he or she would like to change or leave (I imagine, that's everyone!).The story is engrossing and the writing is skillful.I couldn't put it down, and I feel more empowered to follow my own dreams and heart after finishing the book.That's 5-star material if I've ever seen it.

Surprise - you are in control of your life....
A re-count of the author's year spent in Italy, India, and Bali in the wake of a difficult divorce.This book is easy to read and enjoyable.The author does an excellent job of providing her outlook on the variety of experiences she has + how they relate to her dealing with her "life issues."She eventually comes to the self-actualizing realization that she is in control of her life (as opposed to anybody else) and takes steps to make herself happier.

Boring
Just another self indulgent autobiography.It was too boring to read and had not much to say.If you are in for light reading, go for it.Do not expect too much from this one or you might be very disappointed. ... Read more

Any interested in adventure travel will find this a fine, absorbing survey.
A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History's Greatest Traveler tells of an early sightless adventurer who fought the slave trade in Africa, survived captivity in Siberia, and hunted elephants in Ceylon - among other things. He was an amazing explorer of the early 1800s - and a celebrity of his times - but died in obscurity that has lasted until now. A SENSE OF THE WORLD uses much research to recreate James Holman's life, times, and adventures and provides a vivid memoir hard to put down: any interested in adventure travel will find this a fine, absorbing survey.
A Sense of the World...Wonderful!
Well I just turned my last page in A Sense of the World today, with reluctance and great satisfaction!I absolutely loved it.I'm starting my second year here at college and find myself immersed in the sciences, study and the routine of academics.This book, which I heard about on NPR, really enlightened my days as I read along the travels of James Holman.For me, it provided a fresh glimpse into another world, and an escape from the work of my studies.I wish I could write like Roberts, because I cannot express what the book meant to me.
Kindred Spirits Ignited
There is a driving force in myself and others I know to go and search the new and unexplored in the world. This is not stated in arrogance, by any means. It just an "is".This account of James Holman was the single most inspiring true story of a traveler in its purest definition of the word. It brought new meaning to the word "fearless" in my life and I believe my approach to journeying has thus been transformed. Blends humor with adventure
SEAWORTHY: ADRIFT WITH WILLIAM WILLIS IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF RAFTING tells of a sixty-year-old who set out across the pacific Ocean on a homemade balsa raft with only a parrot and cat for company - in the heart of typhoon season. He survived on very little and spent four months at sea before arriving safely in British Samoa, besting Thor Heyerdahl by two thousand miles. This book's controversial topic of cannibalism made it stand out from other books. Although some parts of the book dragged on, the book was overall a page turner. This book is about a clan of men and women: rugby players, their friends and family, and a few other passengers, that crash in the Andes. In the end, only sixteen men survive and to survive they have to eat the bodies of their dead friends. I like how this book describes the main characters' personalities in an accurate and honest way. One of My New Favorite Books
Before beginning this review, I read the reviews of others; good and bad.I'm shocked at the venom spewed by people who called Erik Weihenmayer an arrogant jerk based on what they read.I had the opposite impression, but grant that the essence of an individual cannot be captured in the pages of a book.Many, many biographies have been written, yet, all fall short of completely describing the individual.Erik displayed unabashed love for his family, his wife, his friends, even his guide dog.He spent equal time describing his failures and his triumphs.He exposes his frailties by describing the trial and error involved in learning to effectively teach sighted children.He points out that the road to his successes were not his alone, but his, his family's, his wife's, his climbing partners', even his young students who were insightful and helpful when it came to his teaching.I especially liked that he described the antics, the pranks and the everyday 'slice of life' moments.I thouroughly enjoyed this book, so much that I can't imagine how anyone could NOT like it.But, there are all kinds people in this world and we all make it go 'round.I'd give it a perfect five, but it stops short of telling about climbing all seven summits.I'd prefer he'd waited until then to write his bio.

Soar to New Heights
I just finished reading the most wonderful book I have ever read.It's personal, it's a journey, it's an inspiration.And I don't even know how to make a tribute to the author.He seems like one of the more wonderful people in this world.The fact that he did what most of us couldn't is phenomenal; the fact that he enjoyed it is more. I was absorbed with this book from beginning to end.

I met Erik years ago and remember admiring his job.He was a blind man, on his own, teaching children.He cracked up over my high pitched voice.I could go on, but years later, we got in touch and I read his book.You see, this guy never complained or showed what he had been through.He was confident, independent...yet searching.

A 69-year-old mystery is one step closer to being solved
Everyone knows that Amelia Earhart did not finish her around-the-world flight in 1937 - and that is about the ONLY thing that anyone interested in finding out what happened next can agree on. Did she and navigator Fred Noonan crash at sea? Were they executed by the Japanese after a secret spy mission? Did Amelia somehow survive and end up living in the US under an assumed name? Was that Star Trek: Voyager episode the true solution?
A Fact-Based Theory About Amelia's Last Flight
Unsolved mysteries are a surefire way to get published and possibly turn a fast dollar or two.All it takes is a theory about what happened, bolstered by assertions presented as facts and some talent for writing the story.That's why the market is saturated with books that promise the reader "the True Story".

Great Read!
This is exciting stuff! I enjoy the honest portrayal of Columbus, showing his strengths and weaknesses and how he was both an opportunist and a victim of the system. The narrative is spell binding and gripping. It is a great story and very well written. One thing the reader should be aware of is that the first half of the body of the book is background information. It interesting and important information to have before you read the account of the voyage, but there is a lot of it and the title may mislead you into thinking that the body of the book primarily consists of the account of Columbus's fourth voyage, when the account is really about half. Secondly, I wished that there were more maps marking the important places the book mentions in Spain, Africa and the New World. There is a map of the New World and the lines marking Columbus's four voyages, but not enough of the important points are included on that map. Having that would have aided my mental picture of what was happening. Also, one of the other reviewers mentioned the lack of source citations. I have noticed the same thing about other recent reader's-history books lately. I wonder if it is becoming a trend to cite less, in order to prevent distraction to the reader. I hope not. Citing sources is an important part of validating one's research and it reassures folks that undue embellishments are not being made. Nonetheless, these are all nit-picky points compared to the almost magical way that Dugard draws you into the story. Buy the book! You won't be able to put it down you will be amazed at what Columbus and his crew endured.
Very good but a few problems for historians
Martin Dugard's riveting account of Christopher Columbus's last voyage in the New World is not without its flaws. Though the book is very compelling and a great read it suffers a bit from a jumping narrative in the first section to a lack of citations regarding sources throughout.
Enticing, energetic
Whereas the first half of this book is a summary of Columbus' prior three voyages and the Spanish political arena of those days, along with tales of other adventurous voyagers scouting the New World, the remaining half of the book plunges into an exciting examination of his fourth and final voyage.

Great Story, Detail Overload
I was completely enthralled throughout the entire reading of this book. However, some of the chapters seemed very long because Ralston takes great care to give every last detail of every surrounding, feeling, conversation, personality, direction, etc. I found myself thinking, "Hurry up and just SAY SOMETHING!!"
Below par is great in golf, not in books
Like an overly ambitious ivy plant that has leapt from an accenting trellis to conquer an entire Big Ten university building, Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place should have been a simple story about how an average person finds themselves the target of a planetary assault; instead readers find themselves the victims of a literary mugging.

An account of breathtaking courage
The author has clearly been rigorous in piecing together diary extracts and interview notes to put together this account of an adventure, or perhaps ordeal, which required of its survivors a degree of courage, composure and determination that cannot fail to humble yet uplift and inspire the reader.The style of narrative is rather matter-of-fact, rather than dramatic, and its coverage is limited to the expedition itself without dwelling much on the lives of the key players before or after.

An incredible book
Alfred Lansing's book, Endurance, dramatically details the 1914 expedition to the Antarctic led by Sir Ernest Shackleton.Although a non-fiction book, Lansing manages to make it read like a thriller, adventure.He wrote his story using first person accounts, interviews of survivors, journal entries, etc.While sometimes history can be a bit dry, this novel truly makes you feel a part of the adventure and reads very quickly.Ernest Shackleton's leadership abilities ensure not only the survival of the crew, but demonstrate his character as a man.Crew and officers were treated alike and shared in the duties of survival.Order was maintained and his personality and command of the situation enabled the group to survive what could have been a disaster. ... I don't get it.
This was an interestng diversion but hardly the masterpiece that I was led to expect. Pretty ordinary.

A wonderful, easy reading
Only on a few occasions in a lifetime is one given the chance to read a novel that so captures the lightness of the human spirit and the joy of living as in Antoine de Saint-Exup?ry's Wind, Sand, and Stars. With elegant, nearly poetic writing, he presents a small collection of stories from a lifetime of philosophy and adventure. Saint-Exup?ry was a French pilot who flew for the postal service A?ropostale in the 1920s, a time period when aviation was still a revolutionary and dangerous activity. Any fears he had were shadowed by his absolute love of flying and passion for soaring high above the earth, away from the material desires and violence of society. This endearing relationship between Saint-Exup?ry and his aircraft shows one of the many ways, as Wind, Sand, and Stars documents, that he finds happiness in his everyday life.

Lost in Translation
This is my first time reading a book from Antoine de Saint Exupery, and I am glad to say that it was a fantastic experience. I chose this book for an english assignment, and was pleased to find that it was a good choice! However, as I am a High School Junior, some aspects of the book kind of flew over my head. I chose the book looking for a good adventure novel, and the aspect of flying got me very interested. I also liked how Exupery laid out the book. By sectioning off the different ideas, it made the concepts a little more easy to grasp. As interesting as the novel was, however, it took me forever to actually get into the text. The introduction, and begining points seemed to drag on, and I was tempted to skip the begining in order to get into the action. All in all, I eventually got into the book, and started to enjoy it. A delightful read
This was a book that I bought in a bargain section and it turned out to be quite the bargain. It is a heart-warming tale with adventure and humor for everyone. The language at times was a little much and for this reason I would not recommend to young children. I don't think the author was necessarily attempting to make this book a comedy but he had me in stitches several times. I don't usually re-read books but this is one that I am looking forward to reading again and again in years to come.

Mixed feelings
The experience of two teenagers flying coast-to-coast is an exciting tale that deserves to be told.As long as the storyline focuses on the actual travel adventure, it makes for an interesting read.On the flipside, the author's lengthy description of his rather dysfunctional family situation gets tiresome before long.From a pilot's perspective I hope that the irresponsible, at times outright dangerous acts described in the book will not encourage the next generation of flyers to follow suit.Sadly, the book's supposed highlight, crossing the Rockies between two mountain peaks at high altitude in gusty wind conditions is the result of a blatant navigational error.By diverting 10 miles to the south and to lower terrain, this dangerous situation could have been avoided altogether...

If you come from a flying family, you'll love this book!
With a father, three brothers, two sisters-in-law, a niece, and several nephews who fly or have flown or soloed, and a few hours toward soloing myself, this book had instant appeal for me. Brother Jim's wife, Chris, recommended it to me and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Rinker Buck does a grand job of telling his story; the whole story not just the mind-boggling, spectacular flight across the country he and his brother, Kern, took as teenagers. The book is well written; easy and absorbing to read. This is not a book you will want to read quickly. I have not finished it and am in no hurry to do so. The story is to be savored; parts read and re-read. There are some photographs included which always adds to the appeal of a story about real people. (Two of my brothers soloed at 16. With a ten-year age difference between them, the older one soloed the younger one. It made all the local papers.)

The most famous dentist ever?
There are eras in American history that seem almost more mythic than real.Certainly this applies to the Old West, in particular, the frontier from around the end of the Civil War to the beginning of the 20th century.The figures of this period are the stuff of legends, constantly being shown, assessed and reassessed through books and movies.

Excellent research, splotchy presentation.
Any reader enjoying history, specifically the "Old West," will delight in the literary offerings associated with Tombstone in the 1880s. In particular, the Earp/Holliday/Cow-Boys saga is one with many tales, some based in fact, some in myth. Since the movies, "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp," we have been flooded with books centered on this fascinating story. The difficult part for a discerning reader however, is knowing which one is the closest to the "real" truth. I suspect we will never know which version encompasses the greatest percentage of accurate datapoints, but we still try. Gary Roberts has provided us with another chapter to consider, and while I consider Mr. Roberts a very skilled and masterful historian, he has had better efforts.

Pretty good book
The book High Calling is good. I recommend that if you enjoy real life novels you buy this book. It is about the astronaut Rick Husband and his wife Evelyn Husband. I liked it for that reason. Also, it gets to the point without too much detail but it has enough. It was also interesting how it told about all of the procedures that astronauts do and how their lives are. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books about real people in real situations. Another good thing is that the book is spiritual and tells people who read it to become more spiritual.
