4-0 out of 5 stars He never disappoints
One thing about the books of Chuck Palahniuk...they are never boring. Here, he takes his typically dark yet hilarious tone to the realm of nonfiction. Entertaining with stories from the depressing (his father's murder) to the strange (his summer spent with 'roid obsessed buddies and their quest to pump up) and the disgusting (sperm and Margaret Thatcher is all that needs to be said). All fans of Palahniuk will love it, and he may even make a few new ones with this interesting effort.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are they really true stories?
When you call your book true stories, especially in this year of heightened awareness about what is truth and what is fiction, you should expect a higher level of scrutiny from your readers. As such, I have to admit that I'm highly dubious as to the legitimacy and honesty of some of these stories.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Diversion, But Not Really Stranger Than Fiction
I enjoy Palahniuk's other work, so picked this one up.It didn't disappoint, but it just wasn't that compelling. At its most interesting were the portions of the book where Palahniuk was directly experiencing the events, such as his experimentation with anabolic steroids and the horribly depressing essay on his simple day out in Seattle dressed as a big furry dog.His essays on his self-consciousness and naieve attempts to be cool and smooth for his brushes with Hollywood power and stardom as the Fight Club film took off are fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life as funny as his work...
Peter Falk has written the ultimate autobiography, although Mr. Falk himself insists that it isn't an autobiography. The book is written in short chunks, each a hilarious anecdote from his life, which would make it very easy to put down between stories--except that it is so much fun that you can't put it down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Falk, at his best
This book deserves more than five stars: it is Peter Falk at his best... the great actor can entertain in many roles.. as actor, as artist, as author. He has a lot of interesting stories to tell. And he does it in a brilliant way. He brings us a lot of interesting stories - about his life and work. No doubt, Peter Falk is one of the greatest!

3-0 out of 5 stars vgmani
I dont know how to rate this!! The book... I am yet to read! But I received collectorS edition within a collector edition! The book is printed upside down while the cover page is printed straight!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life of Vladek
The combination of volume one and volume two of Maus instills emotion, unfelt by any Holocaust story.Spiegelman (hey that's me; so of coarse it's a must read) implements humor, details, and characters that allow for a stunning plot of the life of his father Vladek. The relationship between Mala and Vladek, is humorous and tragic at the same time. I don't want to reveal too much plot, but would like to end writing the animals characterizations of personalities is ingenious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars beatle fans can really appreciate it
reading this book, as long as you know most beatle songs, will give you a better understanding and appreciation for the beatles. someone let me borrow it, and i have no background in audio production, but you begin to understand it through emerick's clear descriptions. He points out little things that happened in the studio that one would never catch. It's fun to read about it then play back the song and know where a certain lyric or idea came from. Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's View of Beatle Music Making!
In the early 1960s Geoff Emerick landed the dream job music fans would have killed for; assistant recording engineer at EMI Studio working with George Martin. It was a dream job because one of the first groups Emerick worked with was the Beatles. The next seven years of musical magic and misery Emerick spent in the control room are wonderfully chronicled in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective
This book is a unique perspective on The Beatles phenomenon.Admittedly, the author does give his opinion of the individual Beatles, but he acknowledges clearly that his perspective was entirely based upon observation and interaction in the studio. Therefore, all of the sound and fury expended in other reviews defending or attacking the author over his opinions of the individual personalities of the Beatles misses the point. This man was present at the creation of many of the most memorable Beatles records. He admits that he had limited contact with the individual Beatles, but what contact he had he recalls. Most of what he says about them individually is not new.We all know that Lennon was out of it for a lot of the time in the 1967-68 time period, and we all know that McCartney was the best all around musician of the bunch.Knowing that says nothing about the band, or who was the leader, or who wrote the best songs, or anything else.To the contrary, the impression one is left with of the personality sketches in this book is that the band was just that, a band, and that each individual made a contribution. The fact that the author had limited contact with George Harrison, for example, or that his contacts with Harrison were not always positive, is just one man's experience, and says little about Harrison.

5-0 out of 5 stars behind andy's camel
Out of all The Police guys, Andy had the most wicked sense of humor. He saw, and still sees, things a tad differently than the rest of us. Having chatted with him a few times in person, I can say he is a most interesting man. I had no idea he wrote so well. I was a bit surprised when I heard this book was coming out. Andy, despite his mischief in The Police, always seemed the most private of the three. I also learned a few things I didn't know. And,to me,that's incredible. I have listened to his music since I was a teenager. Part of his appeal as a guitarist is his love for his instrument, of course. But Andy is also one of those rare performers that thinks more of "the song." He's not a flashy-solo kinda guy. The song is more important than any one member's part in it. A highly enjoyable read to be sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n' Roll Story
When I was in junior high, The Police was one of the biggest bands in the world and I was a huge fan.I had grown up listening mainly to sixties music like the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.The Police was the first band I came to on my own and from my own era.No music group before or since has meant as much to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A funny blitz-force adventure of the highest order!
This is an amazing "life story" told with heaping amounts of humor and insight -- easily accessible to both the hardcore Police fan, and the reader simply interested in gaining perspective on the churnings of themusic business amidst a more spiritual pursuit.Andy uses his fantastic sense of humor to great effect here.I was constantly giggling at the absolute mayhem surrounding him at every turn.I had no idea he was such a roving wild man -- but from the man who wrote the classic "Behind My Camel" -- who would expect otherwise.I admire someone who enjoys Spinal Tap and Camus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly fascinating. The best book on FLW in 20 years
This book absolutely blows the lid off the Taliesin idyll. Hails Wright (and rightly so) for the genius that he was but exposes his faults, many of which are so utterly shocking to anyone with even a minimal knowlege of Wright's life. Be prepared: it will definitely change your opinion of Wright. Book goes into a huge amount of detail on the relationship between Wright, his wife Olgivanna, and their involvement with her former mentor Gurdjieff, who had coveted Taliesin as the base of his American operations. In short, everything in Wright's life was far from calm. The apprentices are the real story here. The authors portray them as talented, but inexperienced amateurs, and it is fascinating to read how they had to work in such difficult situations on such monumental works as Fallingwater and the Johnson Wax building, all the while dealing with Wright's idiosyncracies. The apprentices were really the physical manifestation of Wright's genius. Most (sadly) faded from view or were hesitant to write books of their own lest they were perceived as riding their Master's coat tails. I'm glad their stories are now being told. The authors present a great story and a very eye-opening book on what had been a relatively little-known aspect of FLW's life and legacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Error on Page 355
Paragraph #2 on page 355 is in error. The two Linclon Continentals were not a gift to Wright from the Ford Motor Company as stated. Wright purchased the 1940 Lincoln Continental Convertible from Monart Motors in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 11, 1940 for $3195.50. He was given a $1495.50 trade in price for his 1939 Lincoln Zephyr convertable. The Lincoln Continental 2 door sedan was purchased by Wright from Monart Motors in 1941 the first year that it was available. The cars were therefore not purchased together as the authors stated. The documentation for the sale of the cars to Wright can be found in the Frank Lloyd Wright archives at The Getty. Unfortunately this example of the use of inaccurate secondary sources causes me to ask the question: How much of the authors' other research is equally questionable? Otherwise, the book is a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed
For any student of the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and of the arts in general, this interpretive history is not to be missed. While Wright is credited with creating some of the most astonishing buildings of the last century, the setting surrounding their creation is another story in itself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Take the Cannoli
She's a staple of This American Life on Public Radio International, and she's also appeared in GQ, Salon and Request. Her humor and wit are sharp and perceptive. But, let me work from the back cover blurbs.
4-0 out of 5 stars More Sarah Vowell, Please
Take the Cannoli was a wonderful mixture of essays that was throughly enjoyable. As I have become used to with Sarah Vowell, her family, her relationship with her twin sister, her friends, her thoughts on the world in which she lives, her love for history, and the challenges of her everyday life flow through many of these essays, interconnecting them in ways that you do not expect. The essays in Take the Cannoli are consistently good, often made me laugh out loud, and in some cases changed my perspective on a particular subject. Although I didn't always agree with her, I certainly appreciated her passion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Vowell: American Hero
Sarah Vowell is one of America's best writers in the genre of humor. Personally, having read both Sedaris and Rakoff, two other fantastic humorists, I am rather partial to Vowell. Take the Cannoli seems to demonstrate her ability to both make us think and laugh. It seems that in most of her essays, I learn about as much as I laugh. Personally, I thought the title essay was extremely well done and isdeserving of much praise from the literary community. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The interviews make this book
Streissguth's journalistic approach is a refreshing contrast to the psychological blather of many biographical writers. There is a healthy balance of respect for Johnny Cash and a straightforward look at his extramarital relationships, substance abuse, and devotion to Christianity. Both the complex and simple sides of Cash are revealed through detail-rich interviews with those who knew him well. Indeed, the extensive interviews with band members, friends and family are what make this book so compelling and fresh. For instance, the interview with Rosanne Cash, his eldest daughter, helps us understand Cash's drug addition, his role as a father and the insecurities he experienced as a performer. The Man in Black has never been revealed in such color and light.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review from friend and minister, Rev. Jack Shaw
JOHNNY CASH The Biography... is so much more than just another `Johnny Cash' book. As I began reading it, I quickly found myself wishing that this remarkable resource had been available before I met John. I believe that it would have better equipped me to... `Understand'.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh look at Johnny and his life
I found the book to be a great read.More than just the same rehash of his life that I have read before.Streissguth has broken new ground in his telling of the Johnny Cash story. He brings important players--such as brotherRoy Cash and former manager Saul Holiff--out of the shadows, traces the roots of various Cashian myths and offers new insights throughout.Fits the bill for Cash fans and newcomers alike.Great photos, too.The following passage is an example of the new perspective that the book delivers: "Drug use became Cash's convenient sin, the one that made for a great redemption story but that had no visible victims other than himself. As long as the drug-obsessed media focused on his addiction, the story functioned as a smoke screen.Cash rarely had to deal publicly in any substantive way with questions about extramarital affairs he engaged in during the 1970s and 1980s or with the pain that he'd brought upon his wives, daughters, friends, and band members."

1-0 out of 5 stars Am I missing something?
This book was really bad- even unreadable.I read about 10 pages and then had to jump around and try to find anything good. This is just delusional acid-tripping.What a bunch of 1970's garbage.Think before you flush this stuff into your mind.I have no idea why so many people rated this book so highly. Are there lots of other silly idiots out there? Yes, there are a few good points and some interesting stuff sprinkled around, but it's all so chaotic and so soaked in drug induced delusions that you have to recoil. This is New Age sewage at its worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
If you like reading about the occult, futurism, UFOs etc... you will like this book. It's interesting how Dr. Timothy Leary's predictions from the 7Os never came to fruition. However, I think it attests to his eternal optimisim.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take It Easy turns Take It to the Limit
Having enjoyed Hoskyns' story of L.A. rock's origins and evolution in his Waiting for the Sun, and having read Michael Walker's overlapping (in subject matter, time of study, and time of publication) Laurel Canyon [also reviewed by me], I approached Hotel Cal with anticipation. Although I was still in childhood/adolescence at the time of the early 70s that Hoskyns' new book surveys, and although much of the music was not so much liked by me as simply absorbed from its immensely popular and understandably nearly ubiquitous presence on the local L.A. radio stations at the time, I found myself recalling dozens of songs that I have not heard since three decades ago!
5-0 out of 5 stars Of Egos and Eagles
A superbly involving narrative history of an extraordinarily fertile era for American popular music. Hoskyns examines the tension between creativity and commerce that was beginning to make itself felt big-time in the late 60s and clarifies the relationships - musical, business and personal (and the many and varied permutations thereof) - that existed during this remarkable period. I recognised all the names - Ronstadt, Souther, Mitchell, Browne, Mama Cass, The Byrds, Geffen, Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash etc. - but, until now, wasn't completely aware of how they all fitted in to the bigger musical picture. It's an extraordinary tale of monumental egos and of idealism turning sour: the sunshiny optimism of California in the 60s, when anything seemed possible, giving way to the darker cynicism of the 70s as the LA scene imploded, the Eagles stopped talking to each other, the men-in-suits seized power and punk reared its less-than-pretty head. Next stop for me: Hoskyns' "Waiting For The Sun"; Richie Unterberger's two books on folk-rock and John Einarson's "Desperados: The Roots of Country Rock"...and a lot of CDs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I coulda been there
While I did enjoy this book,I guess I expected more of a gossipy tone about people's love lives and friendships.I also expected a more visual aspect-descriptions of houses, etc. What I got was factual: who wrote this song, who was this persons agent type thing.Interesting, just not what I expected. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Vibrations
Hopefully this is the final book on a genius, Brian Wilson. There's not much more to say and this book's fault is it may say it in much too much detail.Brian Wilson, founder of the Beach Boys and brilliant composer/arranger begins a descent into drugs and mental illness.Everyone knows the story. What this book does is not tell the surface story but rather give every detail of virtually every song written as well as the band member relationships focusing mainly on the dysfunction.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on Brian Wilson to date

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hard Book To Put Down, A Joy To Read
This is a great book for any Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan. As a hardcore fan like myself you may want more detail but he points out other sources like Timothy White's book "The Nearest Faraway Place" where he drew information and where I am headed next after finishing this one. You really end up feeling like you know Brian Wilson and his bandmates after reading this. You get a real picture of what happened- this is extremely fluid- really well done. There are a few areas that would have been nice to have more detail on, like David Marks for example, although he is interviewed here. The book is good enough though that I would buy the next edition which I hope might include the reunion of Wilson/Love/Jardine/Marks/Johnston on the rooftop of Capital Records recently and the Wilson/Jardine reunion for the mini Pet Sounds tour. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a book to relate to
Michael's book is a fantastic account of his life leading up to and including his struggle with dealing with Parkinson's. As a person with a Parkinsonism who was diagnosed after Michael exposed his disease, I can say he truly made it easier for others to deal with this devastating blow. His hiding of the his disease is common of so many people who are diagnosed with PD at crucial points in their lives. An extremely good book about life rocky road, and for those with PD or any illness for that matter who are trying to create a somewhat normal existance for themselves and their families.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great story, very good read.
A friend gave this book to me. It was such a good read. I had no idea Michael was so sick, and had such a difficult life. While I did not respect ways he wasted his body by alcohol, drugs, and stupid habits before he found out, at a still very young age of mid-20s, about his Parkinson's disease, his remarkable change to a new man was a very good story. The anectodes from this book will stay with me, and it has a great message for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
I've been a fan of Michael J. Fox for many years and was sad to learn of his Parkinson's disease.I expected this book to be largely about the disease and Fox's coping with it.However, I was pleasantly surprised to read an honest account of all of the ways he had messed up his life before coming to terms with himself as well as with his disease.Although I don't like to read sad stories of drinking spinning out of control, Fox's matter-of-fact tone and willingness to take full responsibility for his actions was refreshing.I felt privileged to be allowed this glimpse into his life and his psyche, and I ended up liking him better after finishing the book than when I started. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A very shallow puddle
About 8 months ago, during a very bad "flu-experience", I had a great afternoon reading all the negative reviews on 'The Alchemist' and this little gem. And although I was warned, I just HAD to find out for myself (some stubborn people just never learn, do they): could this book really be as awful as these reviewers said it is? And the answer is YES.
4-0 out of 5 stars A quest that is as ancient as it is modern.
Coelho is a master of the words and he doesn't fail to show that even in this book. His storytelling is flowing and never overwhelming or boring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Coelho's writing can only be described as Genuis.Hes a natural and will certainly touch your heart, mind, and soul.He inspired and motivated me with every word that he has written throughout the years.Word in a review cannot begin to describe the writing of this brilliant man.All of his books are highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's bigger than Southie
I love this book! Once I started reading it I found it impossible to put down. I was laughing and crying not because it was sad but because it was so unbelievably familiar. MacDonald's honesty was frightening and liberating and to be honest comforting. Reading it gave me a sense of relief; relieved that someone had been where I'd been and seen what I'd seen.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easter Rising
Easter Rising is an engaging and observant account of survival--how people, families, and communities struggle to reconnect and heal under extremely difficult circumstances, using whatever happens to be handy and available.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Having grown up in Boston in the same music scene as Michael Patrick MacDonald and being of Irish heritage, I expected to identify with much of his book and i did. What I didn't expect to do was to recognize something amazing in my own mother that I had never really given her credit for: Toward the end of the book, while MacDonald is in Ireland with Ma (and is often embarrassed by what he perceives as her inappropriateness), she encounters a stranger whose son has died. Because her own losses have been so staggering (and because she is not embarrassed to try) she is able to console him. With a new understanding and appreciation of her, MacDonald writes:"You never know when you'll need to give whatever you've got to give."

5-0 out of 5 stars A deeply touching book about the fragility of civilisation and progress
This is not a history book or a classic autobiography, but a reading of the author's time, as seen through his personal experiences with his own writing and with European intellectuals. Zweig captures with much nuance the end of a certain kind of European civilisation after World War I erupts, and how it impacted disastrously on society, individuals, and the post-war intellectual climate. Writing the book during the height of Nazi power, the author's words are an appeal to humanity, civility and decency at one of the lowest points in European history. At the end of the book, one cannot but feel that a delicate soul like Zweig's could not be able to resist the brutality of the times. It comes as no surprise to read that a year after finishing the book, he committed suicide. An intelligent, touching book, which excels at giving a sense of what it felt to live in the first decades of the 20th century as a writer and intellectual. It will also be a fascinating book for anyone familiar with Zweig's literary output.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the 20 best books ever writen in Brazil.
I'm a (unemplyed) agronomist and I live in Brazil.I read this book translated to portuguese, some years ago. This book was writen(at least the end part) by a european jew refugee, here in Brazil. In fact, the author died by suicide, after ending this great book.
5-0 out of 5 stars belief
A lot has been said about the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the description of the pre II WW period in Europe and the raising of Nazism being the background of this writer's autobiography. But, although fascinating and complex, Zweig' s explanation of that context offers more than a purely historical analysis.
