5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is an excellent and heartwarming book about growing up in South Dakota. Brokaw, easily the most intelligent, fair and personable of the network news anchors, goes into what made him what he is today -- growing up in America's heartland, the struggles of his father and mother, his life growing up, and his temporary descent into idiothood -- before pulling back and marrying his college sweetheart.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Long Way fromHome: Growing Up in the American Heartland in
A very interesting book that brings back a lot of memories for me, growing up in North Dakota during the same time period.I guess we were pretty much raised the same in this area.I am just now realizing that we were all pretty much in the same boat (we didn't have much, but we didn't realize it).

4-0 out of 5 stars The young life of Tom Brokaw.
I can relate to this book.My parents lived through the Depression and raised their children in the prosperous sixties and seventies. They live in northern Wisconsin where most of the population was white. The similarites with Brokaw's South Dakota is basically the same.As a product of the Midwest, Brokaw is more similar to me than Rather (Texas) or Jennings (Canada).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars He often says very little but he says it so well.
I'm afraid this review will be very lonely. Apparently no one is listening to the audio cassette version & writing about it. William Buckely is a gifted writer & his work translates well to the spoken word especially with him as the narrator. He tells of his childhood at some length which was privledged. He didn't think so at the time. His father thought that schooling abroad would be helpful & so to his horror he was dragged away from his idyllic life to boarding school in England for a time. Apparently he hated it. What he does like sailing.I love the open sea too so I enjoyed those stories. It is obviously his first love & he returns to it again & again. He has had a remarkable career as ajournalist, commentator & editor of National Review since busting out with his first book a runaway best seller, God & Man at Yale. This was published I believe right out of school, in the early 50's. He has the resources to pursue whatever he wants & he has done a lot be it horseback riding, skiing or riding the Trans Siberian Railroad across the length of Russia. But always he returns to sailing. He has raced extensively, talks at length about the mechanics of sailing & life at sea. He seems to have met everybody & is friends with most of them. He has even gone sailing with a lot of them.He is the man when it come to modern conservatism in America, but there is little evidence of that in this work. He has the knack of seeming to be humble even as he is blowing his own horn. I enjoy the stories as I drive along. Time well spent. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
Appalling - I only kept reading because I just couldn't believe it was going to be so bad all the way through! Just a list of complaints about food, hotels, everything he encountered, from London and Cardiff to the Isle of Mull in Scotland. Basically, for him, nothing is as good as America so it would have been better if he'd just stayed home. Also, there are several mistakes, particularly in his use of Welsh. Why didn't he do some proper research? And who needs to know about his medical problems or all the affairs he used to have (because he got bored with his wife early in their marriage). This poor woman was still being dragged around with him to see the few stones he got around to mentioning, all those years later. I read up to the bit about how this ego-on-legs felt he was being used as an instrument of God and that was it - I couldn't stomach any more. (Try Julian Cope's "The Modern Antiquarian" instead if you are interested in standing stones with some legends thrown in. It's a wonderful book written by a truly sensitive and INTERESTED author.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Trust This Title
As advertised on the cover of this book, anachronistic me-generation guru Peck and his wife Lily set off on a tour of Britain's legendary stone circles, right? Wrong. Peck and Lily do visit some circle sites but this book is about 1% stone circles and 99% Peck going on and on and on and on and on and on about himself, his life, his beliefs, his personal health, and why faithful Lily forgave him for all the pain his freewheeling, skirtchasing lifestyle as one of the "it" crowd of the '60's and '70's self-discovery movement caused her. This is not about Britain's heritage sites, or even about self-help, it's about Peck patting Peck on the back for being such a smart fella. A bad book without any redeeming qualities. A waste of money and time. Oh, and Dr. Peck, Scotland is not, as you claim, "larger than all the rest of the United Kingdom combined." Jeesh.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite up to par with his other works
I think Dr. Peck is quite a smart man with many interesting, relevant things to say. That said, I also think that if I met him in person I might not like him very much. Just a hunch. Does this have anything to do with the book? Yeah, of course. Because this is his PERSONAL book. It's not like "The Road Less Traveled," where he is mainly focusing in on case histories and using them as a starting point to Illustrate Great Truths About the World, this is the book where he launches his Understanding About the Universe from his personal life. Since they came non-stop, I found his egotism and uncaring attitude to those around him a bit aggravating. As I struggled through the book--I struggled through because in spite of his faults still Dr. Peck had some true gems to offer--I felt like I was encaged in a closet with my least-favorite uncle, being preached at all the time by a man who can't manage his personal life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
As i was traveling with my boyfriend to Florida to visit with my family i acciedntly bought this book. i meant to buy something else by Nicholas Sparks but it just so happens that is was Three weeks with my brother. I dont not have any brothers and up until this point i didnt think that the realastionships between brothers and sisters could be so close. I loved how this book tied in the relationship that the two brothers had as well as the relationship with the whole family. I myself have not done too much traveling around the world and loved the insight that the book gave me. I actually have looked into a trip to see some of the locations that the two brothers went to.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Emotional
It took me a while to get into the autobiography of Nicholas Sparks, but if you can get past the beginning, it is a very emotional story.I listened to it while I was driving and I was tearing up a few times, which isn't too good while driving, LOL.I think this would actually make a good movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Weeks With My Brother (CD edition)
This is one of the most wonderful, inspirational, and moving books that I have read. At first, I didn't realize that the authors were Nicholas Sparks, author of The Notebook and Message In A Bottle, among other best selling books, and his brother. I hope this doesn't give anything away except that I am kinda dumb when it comes to remembering authors and titles. The book is really an autobiography covering Nick and his entire family. He covers their many trials and tribulations and still manages to see the good that came out of what for me and others, I suppose, would be absolutely devastating and horrible things to happen. The descriptions of his family members, especially his wife, are outstanding and again food for thought and inspiration. We see how ordinary people can be extraordinary when you know them better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sinatra to the point
This is a small book. Short and sweet. Mr. Hamill gets right to the point . There isnt a lot of fluff in this book. A few pictures and so anecdotes to start some of the chapters. It written well and the layout is succint. This is a must read for any Sinatra fan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Consider The Source
Ironic that Pete Hamill should write this book.To my ears and eyes, Pete Hamill has never written a sincere or honest word in his life.
4-0 out of 5 stars The man and his music
I like this book because it isn't like all the other Sinatra biographies out there. In fact, it isn't really appropriate to call "Why Sinatra Matters" a biography at all. Author Pete Hamill was an acquaintance of Sinatra's and much of the book is built around conversations that the two men had together, which is very interesting. This book gives a general overview of Sinatra's upbringing and rise to stardom. Hamill explains how Sinatra's childhood and Italian American background contributed to the development of his music. Sinatra's "fall from grace" is also examined, but Hamill is quick to point out that the only thing that really matters is that Sinatra was able to overcome his obstacles and make an incredible comeback. There has never been another singer like Frank Sinatra and there never will be again.Sinatra continues to represent so many things to so many people, which is why his music will live on forever. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in over 30 years, except of course for The Bible which has no equal
Book Review:"On Wings of Eagles" by Ken Follett; published by William Morrow, New York in 1983; Non Fiction.
3-0 out of 5 stars Why Ross Perot Couldn't Get Elected Dog Catcher
This is an enjoyable book. Follett is a great writer. Read it, you'll enjoy it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narrative Non-Fiction At Its Best
I picked this book up to read after visiting Mr. Perot's office. The book is a testimony to the commitment of a boss and fellow workers to risk it all to take care of your people and your friends. Whatever the debate within the State Department about Perot not giving diplomatic measures time to work, Perot realized time was of the essence and decisions could not wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome
I don't even normally listen to audio tapes like these, but being a fan of Harry Truman and David McCullough, I had to get this. I do want to say that I am VERY, VERY hopeful that this comes out on CD. It is absolutely enthralling. Very fun, very educational. As has already been said - every leader should listen to this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tasty appetizer for David McCullough master work,
Truman. An entertaining one hour speech peppered with anecdotes covering the failures & successesof Truman. There may never have been a person to succeed to the president as unprepared & in such a time of national crises. We were about to invade Japan with perhaps two miilion men & 600,000 casualties. One thing he did know. He could not be Franklin Roosevelt. Nobody could be. He had to be Harry Turman. He knew himself, grew into the job & ranks as one of our near great presidents. Apparently the most important experience of his life was World WarI which he could have avoided in several ways. He found he was brave, he could lead men in adversity & he liked it. He had known disappointments, hated farming, failed as a businessman & was largely ignored as "The Senator from Pendergast." He was honest, stubborn to a fault, loyal, humble but most of all confident in his abilities. You get a flavor of all this in a much too short tape. Read McCullough's "Truman."

5-0 out of 5 stars A stirring example of character and leadership
This cassette should be compulsory listening for ALL leaders. I have heard it dozens of times and it never fails to keep me on track. McCullough's great voice speaking about the character of a great man has produced thefinest short audio tape on leadership that I have ever heard. I boughtseveral hundred copies and gave them to managers. Put the character traitsof Truman into today's business world and what an improved world it willbe. BUY THIS TAPE!! Listen to it many times. It will have a HUGE effect onyour life. ... Read more

Overweight and depressed, Claudia Shear eats her way through 64 menial jobs in this true account of a woman's life at the edges of society.Artist's model, receptionist at a whorehouse, waitress, proofreader, Shear is the underling's underling and gives us a droll, insightful and ultimately frightening look at the inner lives of those who serve us. Claudia takes us on her journey... and in doing so makes a name for herself. This is a well written and thoughtful book.A one woman show!A standup and take notice comedy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I think I wrote this book!
When I look back at the multitude of menial jobs I've worked in my life, I see that I could easily write a book about them, but Ms. Shear has beaten me to the punch! If I didn't know better, I would think I had written this book! She, like me, has worked a variety of jobs that run the gamut. If you've just up and quit your job, read this book.If you're shlepping away at a menial ball-and-chain, read this book.If you're floating from one occupation to another in the hope of finding the perfect career, read this book.If you've been working at the same company for 20 years and have no intention of ever leaving, read this book.If you're a CEO pulling in a six-digit salary, read this book.If you're independently wealthy and don't have to work, read this book.Regardless of which of the above statements applies to you, you will come away a more enriched person for having read BSTL.

5-0 out of 5 stars I still have a secret crush on her 8 years later...
As Ms. Shear says, "Everyone has a story that would stop... your... heart."I caught her show late late one evening on NPR as I was getting ready to do another speech to hopefully inspire some young people to leave Job Corps and do good with their life - I was burnt out and uninspired myself and just listening to what she had to say - nevermind watching her magnificent presence on the small screen - brought me back up.It took me years to find this book in a library; and I'm glad to be able to buy another copy - maybe another 10 copies to give to people I know need it.Anyone who has ever felt beat down by their work and their lives melded into an amazing wash of effort to keep one nostril above the waves; anyone who has ever felt walked on by the world will be inspired by this wonderful woman's story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Interview With An Environmental Heroine
New Dimensions Radio and Michael Toms are known for presenting some of the most important people and issues of our times. Gratefully, New Dimensions released this amazing interview with Julia Butterfly Hill. Her book 'Legacy of Luna' about her experiences 180 feet up a thousand year old redwood, and the resulting preservation of it and the surrounding grove, is fascinating and incredible. With this interview, we get to hear her speak of the ordeal/adventure in her own voice.5-0 out of 5 stars The voice for those whom cannot speak

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Radio Story Ever.
Listening to this series inspired me and made me look at my life in a new Christian perspective. The characters are so real as are the emotions and settings. I listened to part one four times. I never knew about Dietrich Bonhoeffer until this broadcast I am very grateful for this series. I promise that who ever listens to this will be inspired. There are good people in the world who speak up when things are wrong.Unfortunately, they have to die because of other's sin. A good true story!

5-0 out of 5 stars A historical reproduction of the heroic life of Bonhoeffer
It's an excellent dramatization of the life of Bonhoeffer. I'd never heard of him until I heard this drama. It's historical, and masterfully done by the crew at Radio Theater and Focus on the Family. Definitely worth listening to.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of wildland safety
Living in Montana and being a a Wildland firefighter as well. This book shows the true speed, power and ultimately the violence that a full blown fire can build to. The men that died in Mann Gulch created in death the first vestiges of the high level of training and safety we now all use when in similar situations. Along with fire on the mountain, required reading if you want to see as fire as we do!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Blowhard
The book is way to long it could be 200 pages. Maclean babbles on for paragraphs about something that could be said in a paragraph or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute
Norman Maclean was born to write this book. As an outdoorsman, a wildland firefighter of the same generation as the books subjects and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Norman Maclean's voice becomes the ideal homage to the hero's of Mann Gulch. While fans of Maclean's fiction might miss some of the poetry of his previous works, they will visit a new side of the author in this work as he pieces together the puzzle of Mann Gulch and makes peace with his own personal ghosts. Here the author, in his words, seeks to let the "tragedy become a story". The tragedy is told in detail, both honestly and reverently. Maclean labors to remain dispassionate and honest, to, "not become to sentimental". The tragedy he relates is horrible, the story of the tragedy is beautiful. It is a fitting tribute to the crosses of Mann Gulch and the memories of those who died there. ... Read more

Editorial Review

These 11 historic sermons--some complete recordings of entire addresses, others reconstructed from various church services--make plain why Martin Luther King Jr. considered his "first calling and greatest commitment" to be a preacher of the gospel. As an orator he is second to none, drawing his audience in with an urgency that resonates through every soaring cadence of his familiar, powerful voice. Using insights from psychology, philosophy, and the Bible, he appeals to the heads as well as the hearts of his congregations, explaining that personal and social change can only be effected by adopting a morality of love in service of God and humankind. While King's concern for social justice is a common theme throughout, each sermon is a jewel of literary artistry, as it presents a simple problem, examines its complications, and offers a startling and often challenging resolution. Topics range from "Rediscovering Lost Values," a caution that scientific progress without moral progress can result only in a step backward for humanity, to "An American Dream," a wake-up call to the "self-evident truth" of equality proclaimed in the Constitution.Read more

Simply phenomenal added dimension of Dr king that the general public who know him as an inspired civil rights leader must come to know. He was nspired, energized and directed by the word of Almighty God and conscience. Oh for leaders today to be likewise constituted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Profound Message
The sermons in A Knock at Midnight are both deeply moving and a powerful reminder of the greatness of Dr. King. This collection should be read and heard by everyone, especially the young of today who have been fed a Dr. King who somehow only delivered one speech ("I Have a Dream").As a middle school teacher I found the sermons to be an excellent way for my students to move beyond the platitudes about Dr. King to a much deeper understanding of his life and ministry. To read and listen to these great sermons is an absolutely wonderful experience, but at the same time a sad reminder that today we have no great voice of moral authority like his.Fortunately we do have his words and voice preserved for us and our children.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this EXPERIENCE 10 stars!
Notice I refer to the cassettes and the companion book as an EXPERIENCE as I both listened to and read the REVEREND King! Although the media focused on the visible part of his ministry, the civil rights movement, his sermonsare profound and awesome in their implications for today as well as theirin their powerful delivery during the mid-1950's through 1960's. Although Iwill cherish both the cassette series and the book, it is through hearingthe SPEAKING of Dr. King that really made me breathless! Thank you LORD Godfor sending us your messenger Dr. King to give us a wonderful earthlyministry for a brilliant and brief time (much like Jesus Christ). Simplyawesome! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Vulgarity overshadows story
I love to read about Hollywood, and I know I would enjoy this book if the "Eff-word" wasn't used so much. It proves to me that to get anywhere in Hollywood you have be very low-class and profane. Any reallyeducated person would have a stronger command of the language. The eff-word is a stupid substitution for any word at all, and I just can't get interested in the book because of it. If you don't mind eff this and eff that you might enjoy the book. Too bad. It could have been a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
"The Kid Stays in the Picture" is the autobiography of the film producer Robert Evans, who brought us films like "The Godfather" (parts I & II), "Love Story", and "Chinatown".This is the sort of book that you pick up and cannot put down until you have read to the end.Evans's life is like a roller coaster--he has been an actor, a major studio head (Paramount), and one of the principles of Evan-Picone (designer clothes).Evans has also been divorced several times, and scandalized because of cocaine use and poor business decisions.Although I would be surprised if everything described in the book occurred just as Evans describes, you should still read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it , I wonderwhat he left out though
These sort of books can be as entertaining as the movies that the author helped to make , but they can also be left wanting , like where the plot seems a little thin .

Sumner Redstone should be dead. At least that's what the prologue to his autobiographical tale of business trial and triumph reveals, relating the story of Redstone's narrow escape and painful recovery from a Boston hotel fire in 1979. It might also be what some of Redstone's business adversaries secretly wish after reading this revealing book. Much has been written about the man in control of the Viacom empire, but in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sarah's Review
As a highschool student, I found this book to be extremely inspiring. Anyone who has ever thought of entering the field of business should read this book. I did and it helped me channel my i nner ambition. Redstones inspiring stories (he survived a terrible fire) made me want to get out and conquer the world. At times, Redstone seems a bit full of himself, but anyone who can climb to the top usuallly is. This book is a great read to anyone wanting to find passion by reading from a passionate person.

4-0 out of 5 stars You will love talking about this book.
Whether you buy this book for self-help or because you want to know how the top people made it in their careers, this book will satisfy you. Well written and focused, you catch a glimpse into the life of Sumner Redstone as he rose from a "poor, Jewish boy" to becoming a media conglomerate who is well respected (and feared) in his arena. 5-0 out of 5 stars how can I get you to read this book?
Fabulous from the start. So much intermingles in this book - history, politics, personal struggle, life in Africa, bi-racial familes, adoption - that to narrow it down to a memoir wouldn't be doing it justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Three cheers for Chipo!!!!!!!!!
This memoir goes to show on how faith and love can conquer all odds. It has opened my eyes on the issue of AIDS and the politically unstable country of Zimbawiae. A very touching love story of father and daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you wake up
In dealing with their personal frustrations, the author shows us the hurdles and challenges of wanting to help in nations that need it the most.It is a good read, heartwarming. But unlike most books, it left me in search of an organization that can break through and really offer help to children touched by AIDS. ... Editorial Review

Natalie Wood (1938-81) came from the last generation of movie stars shaped by the Hollywood studio system, and Suzanne Finstad gives her life the all-out showbiz celebrity bio treatment in this compulsively readable book. As Finstad sees it, Wood was tortured by the conflict between her real self, born Natasha Zakharenko to Russian immigrants, and the glamorous "Natalie Wood" persona created by her ambitious mother. Wood admired rebellious actors like James Dean, her co-star in
