4-0 out of 5 stars Great story, Great man
This was a great read whether you're a Pirates and/or Clemente fan or not. You walk away from it truly appreciating the game, Roberto and his charitable side.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Career and Life Beyond the Statistics
I have always been an admirer of Roberto Clemente. During his career he stood out because of his high batting averages in a period of pitcher dominance and legendary throwing arm. Watching his performance on television in the 1971 World Series sealed the deal for me. That World Series was one of the most entertaining of my life (I am not a Pirates fan) and his heroics were largely responsible. He really did seem to almost single-handedly lead the Pirates to victory over the favored Orioles, not withstanding the significant, if not vital, contributions of other Pirates such as Steve Blass (especially), Bob Robertson, and Bruce Kison. Although Clemente had a reputation for being a hypochondriac and difficult with the press earlier in his career, by this time he was universally admired and grouped with baseball's elite. Clemente, by David Maraniss, tells the story of how this came about. Starting with Clemente's boyhood in Puerto Rico, Maraniss chronicles his life and times. Besides describing his journey as a Hall of Fame ballplayer and development as a bona fide role model, Maraniss also presents a portrait of the era. Adding to the tragedy of Clemente's early death is that he could have had as equally a rewarding life after baseball as a public figure, philantropist and possibly a politcian.I learned a lot about baseball in Puerto Rico and the difficulties and discrimination Clemente faced as a black man coming into a foreign culture. The book is a reminder that bigotry did not stop in organized baseball with the advent of Jackie Robinson. For those interested in baseball history, the book contains an interesting profile of the World Champion 1960 Pittsburg Pirates and the city of Pittsburg in the fifties through the early seventies. The 1971 World Championship then served as Clemente's coronation into the baseball pantheon. Whether Clemente was truly one of the greatest of all time is open to debate. My opinion is that while he was a solid Hall of Famer, Clemente was a level below such players as Mays, Aaron, and Mantle. The stats simply do place him at their level. I understand that there is more to baseball than the statistics. At one point Maraniss acknowledges Clemente's statistical weaknesses, but he points that his greatness, like an artist, cannot be measured. I agree with him that there is more to rating a player than raw statistics. However, the same can be said for the three players mentioned above and many others. In my opinion, Clemente was a great player, but does not deserve the canonization that some call for to this day. However, as a man, Clemente should be judged on more than statistics when reviewing his life. I will conclude by saying he led a good life, made a positive and lasting impact on the world, and provided me (and many others) with many thrills and chills on the baseball field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball even if your don't know the game
I am not a sports fan so I don't follow any of the happenings in those fields. Therefore, I was not sure that I would enjoy CLEMENTE but listened to it anyway. What I am is a Curious Kitty meaning that I like to know about people and their lives. This book is that type of story.

4-0 out of 5 stars From a avowed Yankee Hater
About 1 out of every 2 baseball biographies seems to be about a Yankee. As a Yankee Hater, I loath that. However, I was at the library and decided to try The Big Bam by Leigh Montville.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Update of Babe Ruth's Legend!
For those of us who grew up listening to baseball games on the radio rather than seeing them on television, this abridged audio is a real treat.Leigh Montville's dramatic story of the Sultan of Swat, the Bambino, the Big Bam, comes to life as Adam Grupper recounts both observed (the "called" home run) and recreated moments in this fine recording. After all, would you rather read about someone hitting the longest home run in a given ball park . . . or listen to a virtually breathless account of the same?I know which I would choose . . . every time!
5-0 out of 5 stars Brings the Bambino to life
When my daughter saw me reading this book she exclaimed, "Don't you know everything about Babe Ruth already?" Well, even if I thought I did, this book made me aware of how little I knew. I had read most of the previous biographies from Tom Meany's to Robert Creamer's. But Leigh Montville's book is the last word on Ruth. What an enormous amount of research he put in, yet he did not let the material overwhelm his subject. The Babe comes through in living color. I don't think any player has ever captured the imagination of the American public more or has been treated more shabbily by the sport he enhanced. I think one reason that Babe Ruth continues to be the gold standard to baseball fans is because, unlike the spoiled players of today who make millions of dollars a year and charge for an autograph, Babe loved being "Babe Ruth." He made appearances for kids, he autographed baseballs, he autographed $20 bills. He gave as much as he received both on and off the field.

The beauty of former Negro League star Buck O'Neil's autobiography is its tone: it's filled with thankfulness for the life he's had. Born into an era of racial segregation, O'Neil--truly aninspirational presence in the Ken Burns documentary Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Informative
This easy-going autobiography combines sunny optimism, seriousness, and rich baseball history. John J. "Buck" O'Neil was a first baseman in the Negro Leagues during the 1930-1940's, and he then spent another half decade in baseball, both in the Negro Leagues and in the majors. Here he recounts his upbringing in Florida during segregation (where he was denied entry to high school) and his long career in baseball.O'Neil details life in the Negro leagues, including barnstorming and low pay, playing for the famed Kansas City Monarchs and his friendship with stars like Satchel Paige and Hilton Smith. He also describes managing in the Negro Leagues, coaching for the Chicago Cubs (the first black coach in the majors) and spending decades as a baseball scout.O'Neil is an intelligent man gifted with great charm, and he's often described as the "ambassador to baseball."That charm shines in the prose of co-writers Steve Wolf and David Conrads, and lets O'Neil attack injustice without losing effectiveness via stridency.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read about a forgotten era.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lou Dials at a Baseball card convention. He was there with a small table, some cards, and some baseballs.I didn't know who he was and he kind of looked out of place. My curiosity made me ask."ok so what are you doing here and I am sorry to ask who are you?"He smiled and asked "Have you ever heard of the Negro leagues?"To which I replied of course and named the common known names such as Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and of course Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays.He smiled and said he played with them and spoke of others such as Buck O'Neil.
5-0 out of 5 stars insight to a great guy
I was lucky enought to attend an All Star game a few years ago. When i was their i wanted to get an autograph i saw a group of guys around one man so i went up got an autograph not knowing who he is. After i saw the signed baseball i made out the name Buck O'neil. I looked him up online and saw he was a negro league player and first black coach in the majors. I then stumbled across his book on here and decided to order it and that turned out to be a great decision as i loved this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lewis is at it again...
From the author of several fantastic books, comes a great short synopsis leadership, motivation and team dynamics.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Players, Parents and Coaches
As a coach at a prep school, the experiences that Coach Fitz is dealing with are all too familiar.Michael Lewis puts together a touching work that causes the reader to stop and think.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Book
As a former High School and College Baseball player, and a current high school baseball coach, I have never read a book that epitomizes youth baseball today more than this one. Lewis' description of his experiences, and his coaches experiences, regarding todays parents/athletes could not be better. Every parent of a youth/high school athlete should read this book before they even consider complaining to their child's coach. I am only in my mid 20's and I can relate to many of the experiences described in this book. It's a very quick read as well. If I could give it 100 stars I would. For those readers who complained about the length of the book, yes it is a quick read but the book only costs 10 dollars.Anyone who is looking for a lengthy book should know not to purchase a book that is 90 pages long. For those of you who were, and then bought the book, that's your own fault.Great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Charming Coming of Age Story
Phillip Hoose remembers just about everything about growing up in Speedway, Indiana, during the height of the 1950s.In fact the clarity of his recollection is suspiciously clear, unless he remembers every schoolyard insult with Sony Trinitron transparency. But I think creative nonfiction has reached a point where we give our authors a lot of rope, and let them make up dozens of re-imagined conversations without doubting the substance overmuch. In young Hoose's case, he was a chubby little bespectacled kid with a passion for baseball that didn't cut him much ice when his father's job caused the family to movie to Speedway. But his stock rose dramatically when his dad revealed that Don Larsen, the Yankees pitcher, was a first cousin.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Story Well Told
Perfect, Once Removed, by Phillip Hoose is a delightful book, both because of what it is, and what it's not, and because it far transcends being just another book about baseball.

4-0 out of 5 stars A DifferentPerspective
The author certainly did his homework by interviewing over 500 people who have had some interaction with Bonds over his life in order to write this book. What was grat about this book was that it wasn't written by Bonds or from the perspective of the author it was more other peoples true experiences about Bonds spun into a book. This was a fresh look at this guy and not written to drag him down or to glorify him, you are left to make your own opinion. I liked it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Barry Bonds
I thought this would be a good book for a teen to read, however, there was much too much foul language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into Barry Bonds
Excellent book.Very entertaining. If you are a baseball fan this is a must have as it talks of Bonds throughout his baseball career. There are many quotes from his teammates on the Pirates and the Giants as well as items from his college days.

Editorial Review

In a stunning feat of meticulous reportage, Pulitzer Prize winnerRichard BenCramer ultimately puts to rest the "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?"question with iconoclastic bravura. In Cramer's evaluation, the hero Americaheld onto so desperately for so long was really a creation of a nation'scommunal imagination. The Joe DiMaggio that America tried so hard to believe inwas never really here at all.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars One-half of a good biography
Other reviewers have mentioned in detail the facts covered in this book - DiMaggio's phenomenal beseball career, together with his often seedy and less-than-heroic private life. I would only add that I quite enjoyed the book up through DiMaggio's retirement from the Yankees. Cramer did a masterful job of portraying his subject as a complex individual and often unique talent. Above all, Cramer gives the reader insight into the motivations that drove DiMaggio in both his public and private life.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great insight into a great player
Never saw him play but my father did and I've heard all the stories so I recently picked up this little gem and was introduced to the story behind the legend. And its a tragic story in many ways. Cramer presents Joe D as a sad man, angry, lonely, aloof and uncomfortable in the spotlight but somehow needing the spotlight as well. Well researched and detailed "The Hero's Life" is a powerful and compelling look at what makes (and breaks) a hero. I certainly came away with a deeper respect for DiMaggio and Yankee's history. It would be great if he'd do a book on Gehrig or the Babe because few books have actually captured their lives the way this book has captured DiMaggios.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Biography about the True Greatest
Richard Ben Cramer can't be said to be a Joe DiMaggio fan which makes this book extremely interesting because DiMaggio comes across as the greatest baseball player who ever lived - despite his many eccentricities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Weighs The Mantle...
Buster Olney, a former beat writer for the New York Times, looks at the New York Yankees' run of baseball success from 1996 to 2000 from the vantage point of the night it all came to an end, Game 7 of the 2001 World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Makes an eloquent case that the Yankees are done.
I admired Olney's attention to detail, the way he explains the game, and how he gives an in-depth account of every key figure for the Yankees during their latest dynasty run.
4-0 out of 5 stars Feel the Pain
For Yankees fans, this book makes you re-live the pain of the final inning of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. Why would you want to do a thing like that?It also happens to be a good read on how the Yankees teams of 1996-2001 were built, perhaps providing an excellent roadmap for how the current Yankees can get back on the path to postseason glory. Here's a hint: While adding expensive, Hall of Fame bound free agents every winter may create the appearance of guaranteeing World Series rings, the results show the exact opposite effect.Where have you gone Gene Michael, our (Yankees) nation turned it's lonely eyes to you... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bio, seperating myth from stereotype
Satchel Paige is an enigmatic figure in american histroy. Mention his name, people inevitably think of the negro leagues,or thta terrible bingo long movie. In fact, Paige was ,in many repects, the first modern ballplayer. He played for a percentage of the gate, would only pitch a couple of innings in these contests, had no compuction about jumping from team to team{or country to country}The minstel show, stephifetchit aura that he calculated with the all too eager white press was, of course, a huge ruse. He was a sometimes bitter man{quite understandably so}He knew, instinctively, that he was the best pitcher in the world{although, curiosly, his peers voted Smokey Joe williams better in a 1950 vote in the Pittsburgh Courrier} He despsed the Jim Crow laws, and what he had to do to get around them. HIs civil rights stands were taken in the 20's 30's and 40's, when such things often meant death. He pitched for what might have been the greatest team of all time{the Pittsburgh crawfords of the early 30's] Dimaggio called him ethe toughest pitcher he ever hit against. All of these nuggets are in this book. Mr. Ribowsky did a fine job here. Paige is a figure who should be celebrated for what he was:an american original,a species often sighted but rarely seen. A wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Demi-God
After reading this book, I am utterly convinced that Satchel Paige is as much of a baseball legend as a Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. This book not only entertains but it fascinates, so much that I would'nt be suprised ifsomeone mistook this biography for a peice of baseball folklore or a nonfictitious work designed to capture the imaginations of baseball fans. This book portrays the life of Robert Leroy Satchel Paige in a mostinteresting way.In some cases he stands biggerthan life portrayed as ademi-god in the face of the gods of Major League Baseball and in some caseshis mortality is revealed in the very midst of his immortality, and this iswhat makes this portrayal so unique. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What can I say? This book was entertaining.
Basically, I bought this book because I wanted to read about all of the players he threw under the bus.And boy, did he deliver!Look, we all know these guys took steroids just by their physique and their "sudden" ability to hit 60+ homers, but it's nice to have some validation.
2-0 out of 5 stars Maniac Martyr
Conseco claims to have written this book to reveal steroids dominating presence in baseball; however it seems he just wanted to upset as many people as possible with its publication.Juiced is Conseco's elementary cry for justice. He unapologetically admits to steroid use and acts as if he is a martyr for the betterment of baseball. He points fingers, name drops, and defends every blemish of his career in this "memoir."Constantly referring to the "double-standard" in baseball, he fails to suggest any remedy or efforts to solve the problem. His book openly criticizes whites, women, owners, managers, government agencies, trainers, reporters, and is bound to make you mad too.

This was a very revealing look into how steroids played a role in baseball player success starting in the 1980s. This was an influential book which began a congressional search into the use of Steroids in baseball. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Lou Gehrig started his professional baseball career at a time when players began to be seen as national celebrities. Though this suited charismatic men such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, Gehrig avoided the spotlight and preferred to speak with his bat. Best known for playing in 2,130 consecutive games as well as his courage in battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (a disease that now bears his name), the Iron Horse that emerges from this book is surprisingly naïve and insecure. He would cry in the clubhouse after disappointing performances, was painfully shy around women (much to the amusement of some of his teammates), and particularly devoted to his German-immigrant mother all his life. Even after earning the league MVP award he still feared the Yankees would let him go. Against the advice of Ruth and others, he refused to negotiate aggressively and so earned less than he deserved for many seasons. Honest, humble, and notoriously frugal, his only vices were chewing gum and the occasional cigarette. And despite becoming one of the finest first basemen of all time, Jonathan Eig shows how Gehrig never seemed to conquer his self-doubt, only to manage it better. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentlemanly Hero
Even though it's 70 years after Lou Gehrig ran the bases, Mr. Eig has crafted a masterpiece that brings this athlete to life before our eyes. We see his rise to stardom as a quiet hero, and we see his hearbreaking descent into the physical hell of ALS.Everyone knows how this book will end, but even so, the final act will leave you weeping.
4-0 out of 5 stars I'm 14, so call me a kid if you want
This book was the best biography I have ever read. I absolutely hate the Yankees with all my heart, but this book makes you love the Yankees a little bit more. Eig gave a good balance of personal life and baseball life where he excelled in both. The only complaint I have is that the 2-3 chapters of ALS coverage was really boring. All the letters to read were a pain and I just wanted to get done with it, but don't be discouraged to read it because everything else is flawless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Triple Crown Winner!
Having read a number of biographies about Lou Gehrig, I was looking forward to reading this one and I was not disappointed.Mr. Eig gives us insight into the childhood of Gehrig, along with the domineering role that his mother played in his life.As he begins his professional career, we are privy to the insecurity that he experienced, even in times of success. In addition, we see the conflicted Lou when he marries and it causes problems with his mother. Finally we watch as A.L.S. chokes the life out of a strong and courageous man. This in an awesome and insightful work. ... Read more

Editorial Review

As baseball legend Ted Williams lay dying in Florida, his old Boston Red Sox teammates Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio piled into a car and drove 1,300 miles to see their friend. Another member of the close-knit group, Bobby Doerr, remained in Oregon to tend to his wife who had suffered a stroke. Besides providing a poignant travelogue of the elderly Pesky and DiMaggio's trip, David Halberstam's Read more

great story about long friendships originating from their days as ballplayers. The persoanlities of Doerr, Dimaggio, Pesky, and Williams really shine through in this short read. I never knew much about Dom Dimaggio before this book, after reading it he sounds like a Hall of Famer. Too bad he's not in. Williams comes off as alternatively abrasive and childlike, yet still somehow loveable. This is definitely a good story about long friendships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball, Friendship, and the Shared Experience
This is a touching, fun, and relaxed telling of the story of 4 Red Sox players from the glory days, who all these decades later, are still looking after each other.Ted, Johnny, Dom, and Bobby never won a World Series, but their nearly lifelong friendship speaks about much more than just baseball. Wonderfully told by the author, who of course, is a fan himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Teammates
This is a great book. One of the best books I've read. Dom Dimaggio and Johnny Pesky is driving to Florida to visit the sick Ted Williams for the last time. On the 1,300 mi. trip to Florida, Dimaggio and Pesky look back on all the memories they had on the Red Sox with Ted and Bobby Doerr. Memories from fishing with Williams and Doerr to the field of Fenway Park. Dan Halberstam has once again created a master-piece. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good baseball stories mixed with some leadership tips.
As a lifetime Braves fan I may be a little biased, but as a lifetime baseball fan I think I can make a fair review. It seems like Schuerholz wanted to write a book about how to be a great leader in the business world, but he just could not stop talking about all the interesting behind the scenes baseball stories from his career as a general manager for the Kansas City Royals and the Atlanta Braves.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll gain ideas you can use in almost any field of life!
Though the Atlanta Braves will probably not make the playoffs
5-0 out of 5 stars A winner with an Amusing Review
"Built To Win" is a management primer that should be in the hands of every personnel manager in and out of sport. The negative review by Mr. Ahnberg is amusing: He says it is written on a fourth-grade level, but he misspells "conscience," a word most third-graders can spell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Baseball Storyteller
My thanks goes out to Bill Veeck for being one of the men that saved baseball on the South Side of Chicago.Even though it is not all included in his autobiography, he worked to keep the White Sox in Chicago multiple times. This is one of the reasons many people closely associate Veeck with the White Sox.
