Editorial Review

In 1975, four teenagers from Mount Temple School in Dublin gathered in a crowded kitchen to discuss forming a band. The drum kit just about fit into the room, the lead guitarist was playing a homemade guitar, the bassist could barely play at all and nobody wanted to sing. Over thirty years later, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. are still together, bound by intense loyalty, passionate idealism and a relentless belief in the power of rock and roll to change the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars U2 from the Band Members.
I can't express enough how GLAD I am to own this book. The photographs are exceptional and personal, and the band members open and up front about their (very) humble beginnings, all the way to stardom... which doesn't impress them much. It is the perfect Time for this book. The Band's willingness to put together this volume is a gift to the millions of us who have been touched by the greatest rock band in all the history of rock 'n' roll.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to the world!
I would like to thank U2 for giving us this book. It really made me feel part of their history together. I've been a U2 fan for more than half of my life and looking at those amazing pictures, reading their own words is priceless. If you like U2 is the perfect thing for you to have; if you don't, after reading this book you will.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beatles Anthology Book Done U2 Style
If anyone here owns the Beatles Anthology companion book to the TV series/CD's, this isn't much different. The story is "written" by the band, quotes culled from over 150 hours of interviews done for Neil McCormick. Every phase of the band's career, from it's earliest days straight through to "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" is told solely through quotes from each band member, making this is as definitive, brutally honest, unflinching and uncompromising a book on the band as we'll ever see. These aren't moments plagiarized from magazine articles or other books, but personal recollections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for Newhart fans
Seeing on Amazon that there is an audio CD of this book makes me wish I had listened to that instead. If only to hear the amazingly funny stories that Bob tells so well. This book is like a breath of fresh air for all those who enjoy Bob Newhart's subtle and yet hysterical brand of comedy. Reading this book makes me wish his fantastic TV shows were still on in syndication somewhere. He tells his life story with the same dry wit that he tells all of his jokes. This book is a must for anyone who is a Newhart fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE, BUT SLIGHT.
I've recently rediscovered THE BOB NEWHART SHOW on DVD and it more than stands up to my memory of it being one of the funniest TV comedies of the '70s.I was also a fan of NEWHART in the '80s and Bob's deadpan performance at this year's Emmys made me laugh out loud.So the release of Newhart's autobiography dovetailed nicely with my renewed interest in Mr. Newhart and I was especially curious to read his recollections of his years on television.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good For Getting Your Mind Off Other Things
"I Shouldn't Even Be Doing This" is Bob Newhart's biography, with whimsical insights into his early life, tentative beginnings in comedy, and then on to "The Bob Newhart" show and stardom. As one would expect, the book is both laidback and interesting; even better it helps fill your mind with more relaxing thoughts after being broadsided with countless stories about Rep. Foley, North Korea's "bomb" (?), Iraq, Iran's pursuit of nuclear (?), Woodward's latest book, falling house prices, the stock market bubble (part II), and Barbra Streisland's latest outburst.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS STUFF!
Springsteen fans have been very lucky as of late as he has been putting out more and more product. While non-fans may wonder what all the fuss is about, let's face it, if there is one rock ledged who is sorely lacking in the way of specialty releases, it's the Boss. How nice then to finally see things like the '75 London concert DVD and CD released last year, a revamped Seeger Sessions disc with songs that popped up on the tour and during rehearsals we otherwise would not have had on the actual release and items like this book and the coinciding "Greetings from E-Street..."
5-0 out of 5 stars good job

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tribute to a Great Artist.
I am a life long Bruce Springsteen fan, and so, I have become more objective with my opinions of this spectacularly gifted musician. In Dave Marsh's 'Bruce Springsteen on Tour 1968 -2005, the reader is taken deep into the movement that the Boss has set out, transforming American rock n roll, and in many ways putting a kick back into the American music industry. What is most fascinating in this biography is the wonderful and mostly unseen photographs of Springsteen and crew on tour. There are nearly 350 pictures or so, and nearly each of them tells a unique story of the movement that is Bruce Springsteen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I understand the private Hepburn
I could never understand why Kate Hepburn would be so in love with a weak, drunk like Tracy. I never thought he could act.He just played his bully self again and again. It never made sense what was his deep guilt that made him drink. Now we know he drank because he was gay and could not cope.Very detailed when and with whom by the author.Explains how their relationship fit both their needs. At least 100 pages of footnotes, names, names.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great, enjoyable read and a must have for Kate collections!
The first thing I look for in any book is a great storytelling style; one that makes me want to turn the pages and leaves me happy that I bought the book. William Mann's story of Katherine Hepburn is certainly that kind of read. Enjoyable, witty and well researched. Never stiff or boring, he asks the questions that other bios have seemed to tip-toe around. What exactly were Ms Heburn's relationships like and with whom? There are tidbits of Kate's childhood that I found fascinating as well as tales of that old-guard Hollywood machine we know as the "Golden Age".
4-0 out of 5 stars The Private Affairs and Staunchly Maintained Public Persona of Kate the Great
That Katharine Hepburn was consciously defining and redefining her feisty, self-reliant persona for the purposes of public endearment and career longevity would seem to be an understatement, according to film historian William J. Mann's new biography of the legendary actress. The contrast between this specifically deliberate image and her private self, in particular, her love life, is the focus of the book. However, instead of the expected gossipy, posthumous dismantling of Hepburn, the author takes a more sobering look at what motivated her to maintain this dichotomy throughout her life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content but a very unwieldy format
I have now watched 2001, Clockwork Orange, and the Shining with this on my coffee table.Inevitably, I find myself looking thumbing through the book instead of paying attention to the movie. The content is great, with the perfect balance between tech-nerd info, lit-nerd info, and art-nerd info.I have particularly enjoyed the magazine interviews with Kubrick, since his attempts to explain himself were few and far between. That and, of course, the 2001 print, which I cherish like a relic.
5-0 out of 5 stars amzing
this is the perfect way to get to know perfectly Kubrick's ideas of his films. With fotos and texts real kubrick's fans are going to be amazed by this book that was done very carefully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the weight (and price)
While Kubrick has been gone for years, his films remain a testatment to how good and how diverse the work of a single director can be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Witty
Whatever possessed a girl to openly admit she had a lot of one night stands, never mind write a book about it, is beyond me. Although it's witty, it's clever, it's eye-opening, it's just a bit about stuff you don't wanna know? It's all a bit too much information. But the first chapter is really shocking, Chelsea Handler says that the reason she never got into a serious relationship was because she was dared $5 by her older sister to take a photo of their mum & dad. Together. Ewwwwwwwww!!! It probably scarred her for life!
5-0 out of 5 stars She's my best girlfriend!
I received this book as a birthday present and forgot about it at first. A month or so later I read the first page and was hooked. It was as if I was sitting in a bar drinking straight vodka, so I wouldn'tgain weight, of course, while Handler, my best girlfriend, told me about her latest romp in the bedroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Graceful and Often Affecting
Donald Spoto's new biography of Audrey Hepburn will please those who wish to gain a fuller understanding of Ms. Hepburn's private life and rise to stardom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting!!!
I am very impressed with Donald Spoto's review of Audrey Hepburn. Reading Mr. Spoto's biography of Audrey Hepburn shows a huministic side of the actress and woman the world loved and adored. This book is a wonderful addition to Sean Ferrer's book and Barry Paris's book. I am sure anyone that buys this book will enjoy it as much as I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hepburn's Life and Career Skillfully Examined With Sympathy and Offers Some Surprises
There are already a number of posthumous biographies of the fabled star on the market, the most notable being her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer's loving 2003 memoir, "Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers". Author Donald Spoto adds another one, a respectful portrait that may lack the personal detail Ferrer provides but at the same time, allows enough distance from the subject to be a bit more objective. In 1983, Spoto wrote a fascinating profile of Alfred Hitchcock where the legendary filmmaker came across as a repressed, twisted individual whose outlet was the terror he could instill in his films. This time, he etches an in-depth portrait of a woman whose vulnerability, personal insecurity, and innate love of family endeared her to all those exposed to her - Hepburn's inner circle, friends, colleagues, lovers and ultimately the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie B smacked me upside my head!
Stephen Baldwin is on fire for Jesus Christ, and boy this book sure makes it contagious! He is considerably younger than me in age, but he is also older and wiser andbiblically grounded. He makes Christianity dare I say, FUN! This is what new life is supposed to be like. His changed life is proof enough for me to believe he is the real deal. This is a book I intend to use to reach my unsaved kids. He speaks on their level and yet never wavers from The Truth. What a blessing.I read this book so fast because I was caught up in his excitement and enthusiasm for Christ.I want to get off my kester and DO SOMETHING for the Kingdom. I just pray I grow as bold as he has.Great read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Stephen!
Thank heavens for helping channel the lord's love, through your book, into my heart. You are an "unusual" blessing. I agree; what good is feeding starving third-world children if they don't accept Jesus Christ as their savior. They are bound to repeat the same mistakes under the influence of satan. Besides, its not like Jesus said he would return first to the downtrodden and the poor of spirit and riches. Oh wait. He did say that. Wait...I've figured it out. God created sleezy celebrity evangelical middle men to skew his own son's teachings, thus testing our faith that all human actions and words are the will of God. Everything is God's will! Everything! Amazing! I can do no wrong. Everything I say and do is part of God's predetermined plan, including my futile attempts to critique this silly pseudo-Christian crusade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and inspiring
This book is excellent and well written. Stephen Baldwin's testimony is awesome and the book itself is really a great manual on how to live the Christian life. It is also a great testimony to what God can do through a praying, Christian wife. I appreciate that he is willing to share the life that God delivered him from and also the daily struggles of living the Christian life. The chapter "Who's on First" is brilliant. This book gives glory to God and clearly testifies that the only real positive change we can have in our lives is in a born-again relationship with Jesus. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Dose of Audrey This Time in a Meticulously Presented Scrapbook Format
With clips of her lithe figure spotlighted in the Gap's new ads for their skinny black pants (anachronistically accompanied by AC/DC's "Back in Black"), screen legend Audrey Hepburn continues to engender new fans with her unearthly gamine qualities and timeless sense of style. Two years ago, her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer penned a loving tribute filled with remembrances from colleagues and family friends (he also wrote the foreword to this book) , and celebrity biographer Donald Spoto just released a somewhat more objective but still fawning account of her life. This one falls securely into the same perspective, as it is a relatively pricey volume which takes a more souvenir scrapbook format complete with a stunning gallery of photos, many never before published, and most creatively, copies of personal mementos slipped into thirteen glassine envelopes inserted in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars An X-Rated "All in a Day's Work"
There is very little comic insight in this book.A collection of short tales of debauchery and wild drug use that road comics would tell each other, the book makes a normal person feel like a rube who bought a ticket to the freak show. (Yes, there is just a hint of envy in that last statement.) Some of the stories are funny, in a "Porky's" sort of ashamed-that-I'm-laughing way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Warning Label
A warning label should be posted on this book: Please allocate 4-6 hours of time before opening this book. You will not be able to put it down.I truly enjoyed this compilation of stories from the comedy trenches.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun read
The Publishers' Weekly review on this page says this book is fantastic "bathroom reading." I guess they mean that it's perfect for people who don't always have time to sit down and read for an hour or two at a stretch.Because the stories in here are so short, it's easy to read for ten minutes, get a few complete stories and good chuckles, and then put the book down for next time. There are well over a hundred stories in here so if you read the book this way it'll last you for a while! 5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Tale of Holocaust Horror
Beyond and essential read, Night speaks to the reader about fundamental questions at the heart of the human condition.A powerfully moving autobiography, the story of this teenager's journey through the most horrific death camps of Nazi Europe, strips away discussion of anti-semitism and hatred, to present the raw suffering of individual humans, stuck in situations beyond their control. From the establishment of a ghetto in Elie's home town of Sighet, the reader can only watch with growing horror as the young man and his family are swept up in the Holocaust.Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Gleiwitz: some of the most infamous places in modern human history, rise around Elie, as we watch him stripped of absolutely everything. The reader is swept along helplessly, as Hitler's "Final Solution" unfolds - death marches, starvation, selections, cattle-carts full of people, torture, floggings, mass-murder - and as Elie is gradually reduced to nothing more than a 'hungry stomach'.
5-0 out of 5 stars must reading
this is a disturbing work in that it recounts a man's experience of the nazi death camps. Warning: this book will shake you up mentally, and emotionally. It is not for the faint of heart.Yet, it is a must read because of the exposure it gives to humanity at it's worst and humanity under it's worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation
The short novel Night has emotional power not only because of the dark subject matter, but because Elie Wiesel is a gifted writer who deftly reveals the spiritual and mental anguish of the main character.Generally considered autobiographical, the account follows a young man who feels he is losing not only God, but his humanity as the Nazi machine ravages Europe. The novel itself deserves 10 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Karrine Steffans Sees The Light
in that the whole industry exploits vulnerable women of color such as Karrine Steffans.I know some would say that they participated voluntarily but I hear stories such as Ms. Steffans regarding music industry's exploitation and abuse of women who starred in rap videos. The whole hip hop video scene has come under fire recently by all sectors of society for its sexual and violent content.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking something
Karrine's story was gripping, but there was emotion missing. I felt like she was just sitting back, giving a list of things that happened and not really grasping the effects of them. Regardless, I think she is a strong woman and I admire her willingness to say, "ENOUGH!" and get her stuff together.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read
I really liked reading this book. I finished it in one day. At first I felt bad for. Then, as I read more, I thought she was stupid and by the end of the book I questioned whether she learned anything at all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good at what's important
This is a fast and engaging read about one of the most important musicians of the late 60s. Duane Allman was more than a musician but the leader of the southern music movement that started in the late 60s and into the 70s. This book gets a lot of stuff right, especially giving you a good picture of the man. There isn't a lot of rumour and rock star stories, but the author is blunt about Duane's shortcomings as well as his musical genious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Precise Doses Of Passion And Power
This is one of those rare books that make me wonder what had more impact. Was it the truly worthy subject of Duane "Skydog" Allman or was it the superb writing?Truth is, I read this book in two sittings because the story is so terrific and the way it's told completely spellbinding. It's my favorite rock book of 2006 thus far.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Randy Poe!
As a diehard Duane fanatic, I was very pleased with this book. It felt to me much more than just retread and recompiled interviews, I got a good picture of the man and the musician and learned lots of stuff, interesting stuff, about Duane. The years at Military school were a complete blank until now, and we are also given the secret to how he became so good. He played and practiced and built his chops one note and then one phrase at a time...how do you get to Carnegie Hall?

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a good read?
Bob Harris is a working-class guy who grew up near Cleveland, Ohio.Somehow he came to live in Los Angeles, California.Bob had an outdated degree in electrical engineering with a usefulness that "ended with Pong".Bob had watched Jeopardy! with his parents as a kid.He must have wanted to be on the show because he auditioned for it at least four or five different times. In fact, Bob doesn't remember how many times he took and failed the Jeopardy! test. What he does remember is that the last time he took the test he had decided that was going to be the last time he took the test.He passed it and that began a decade long "career" as a Jeopardy! winner and loser.Bob is a five-time Jeopardy! champion. He made it to the finals of a Tournament of Champions, completed in the Masters Tournament, and won a first round in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions.
4-0 out of 5 stars He hits the Daily Double!!!
If you're a Jeopardy fan, you will enjoy this book I think.Harris offers a funny glimpse into the populat game show.As a former stand up comic, he at times is a bit over the top, manic and cloying in showing how clever or funny he can be.Nevertheless, he pulls it off with paralel themes between the game show (trivia) and key relationships in life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even the index makes good reading
Bob Harris, a one-time "B-minus-list comedian" turned five-time Jeopardy champion, has written a memoir centered around his experiences as a contestant on the show. His Prisoner of Trebekistan--a title hearing which Alex Trebek is said to have "smiled inscrutably"--is everything you'd hope for in a comedian's Jeopardy memoir. Harris proves to be an affable, goofily amusing escort through the various stages of Jeopardy playerdom, from the tests administered to would-be contestants through the mind games played backstage in the green room to chats with Alex mid-game. Having lived it, Harris is able to describe the life of a Jeopardy contestant in training. The regimen of study he adopted makes for fascinating reading: notebooks filled with information to be absorbed (lists of presidents and Shakespearian plays and European rivers), innumerable cartoons, very often buttock-related, drawn as mnemonic aids; Harris's lifestyle and living room rearranged to facilitate his "state-dependent retrieval" of information once on stage. (Which means that he ate green-room-style food for months and moved his furniture around so it resembled the Jeopardy set.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A life as funny as his work...
Peter Falk has written the ultimate autobiography, although Mr. Falk himself insists that it isn't an autobiography. The book is written in short chunks, each a hilarious anecdote from his life, which would make it very easy to put down between stories--except that it is so much fun that you can't put it down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Falk, at his best
This book deserves more than five stars: it is Peter Falk at his best... the great actor can entertain in many roles.. as actor, as artist, as author. He has a lot of interesting stories to tell. And he does it in a brilliant way. He brings us a lot of interesting stories - about his life and work. No doubt, Peter Falk is one of the greatest!
