5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary story
When I hear complaints from friends I guide them to this inspiring story, a young girl whose happy childhood was brutally interrupted by the violence of war.I cannot imagine the grief and fear she endured being alone in Germany for two years while selfless German physicans and nurses diligently cared for Farah around the clock.I was blown away when I read on page 211 that it was my own book, Princess, that played a role in Farah's life.Alyce, a heroine in the story, had been led to reach out and help others due to her reaction to the book I had written about Princess Sultana Al-Saud, and the documented horrors of her own childhood in Saudi Arabia.I applaud Farah and Alyce for their determinations...I, for one, would enjoy a follow-up to this story, and will forever mourn the disappearance of Farah's brothers, who slipped from their lives like an evaoporating mist.Jean Sasson, author of PRINCESS

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book and an even better author
This is an amazing story.Farah is very inspiring. Sometimes I was scared and sometimes I was happy--and sometimes I just wanted to jump into the story and rescue Farah from all her difficulties. This makes you appreciate your life a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired
Iread this book in one evening, I just could not put it down. It was a very true look at how things are for children living in Afganistan, and the courage to change ones life to better herself. I was touched by her strength and her ambition and I think this book should be read by all teens who think the have bad lives and teens who want to better the world. I would love to know how she is now and what things she has done with her life. You just want to take her into your arms and never let go,Thank you Farah for sharing this incredible story . ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Almost the Perfect Reference
I will not spend a lot of time writing about how valuable a reference this is - the other reviewers on this site have already more than done it justice.Aside from the relative lack of material on early Zionism (also pointed out by one of the other reviewers), this book has most if not all of the relevant documents.I have only one major criticism (the reason I gave the book four stars instead of 5): the almost complete lack of information about the original sources.Apart from a one-liner preceding each document, no information is given regarding 1) the citation of the original work, including page numbers, where appropriate; 2) the language in which the original work was written; 3) if the work was not written in English, credit for the translation, the date thereof, etc. While these may not be of interest to the casual reader, to anyone doing research in the field, if only for a college paper, these details are critical.Furthermore, in an area as controversial as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the ability to trace documents back to the original and verify translations is everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every UN Document
What else can be said about a book that contains every UN and League of Nations document about the Israel-Palestine conflict? It is a necessity as a reference for those engaged and a great book to learn about the conflict and its basic political evolution.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book worthy of being called objective
If one is a previously biased reader, this book will doubtlessly contain some documents that are upsetting to read on grounds of including inciteful material. However, the only real criticism that I have is that the 3rd edition has several documents that are of interest to those seeking to research the early Mandatory period, such as documents by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the Revisionist Zionist and ideological founder of the Irgun Zvai Leumi. It is understanable though, that as future editions come out the length could get phrohibitively long without pruning some data. As a basic and intermediate level documentary text it is one of the best I have come across. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant as silk, sharp as a scalpel
Kenji Yoshino's book manages a difficult feat: it is simultaneously elegant and hard-hitting. Yoshino, a professor at Yale Law School, blends memoir and legal history as he charts the changing attitude of American society toward homosexuality. Formerly, gays were treated as if they had a deadly disease--if they were not willing to change, forcible means such as lobotomy and electroshock therapy were at hand to "convert" them. Next, they were left alone as long as they were willing to hide their sexuality. The riots of Stonewall and the AIDS plague were watersheds in changing this attitude, as gay men and women demanded to be recognized as such AND treated as human beings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and much needed
Yoshino is one of the brightest stars in civil rights discussion. I found his book insightful and even necessary for any real progress to be made for civil rights for all people.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a career!
I found the personal coming out to his parents story very moving; it brought tears to my eyes.I also loved the epilogue and the story of the blue star. But, in between, what a lot of navel-gazing and counting of angels on the head of a pin.I'm a lawyer, but I admit I got lost in all the differentiations and attempts to focus the covering/reverse-covering analysis on each type of discrimination. Then, halfway-through, I learn he was only in law school in the 1990s.I've been practicing longer than that and he's the Harvard professor!(I realize that's a comment on me.)This guy has really carved out a self-referential niche for himself. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Many emotions
The beginning of the book was strange to me. Once I got into the flow of the writing I started to enjoy it. Once Essie/Anne hits the movements though, she comes off as a zealot and expects everyone to feel and do the same as she does. There are many emotions in this book. The last part of the book was a bit tedious and repititious, then hits a crescendo, and then falls flat. I was disappointed with the way Anne Moody ends the book, but it's still a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will we ever overcome?
Great detail of the rural south, and how someone came of age during the Civil Rights time.Gripping story of a young woman and her life experiences during that time.I don't know if I could have been so strong during that period, that I am grateful that there were others like her who stood up for our race to make things happen. However, now in this day and age, I don't really see much of a change or difference in the treatment that we as minority people see.Yes, things have definitely changed, but racism is on a whole different level these days because of technology. There shouldn't be a time in our life now that there are still "firsts" for blacks, and yet we still see it.I know that there have been vast improvements, and I am extremely grateful for the people who have sacrificed their lives for minorities of every race, but racism is still strong to this day and age.In the last sentences of this book, she asks the question, will we overcome someday? And responds, "I wonder." Which is deep because I still wonder if we have overcome as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A 5+ STAR BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a 43 year old white woman.I was born, raised and still living in the South.Everyone needs to read this book.I could describe it with big, long, important adjectives but that's not really necessary.Anyone who loves to read and learn should read this book.Ms. Anne Moody is an outstanding human being and I am glad and thankful to have known her story.May her heart be blessed forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A far-above-average mix of memoir and travel narrative...
A great book in many ways - Andrew Pham succeeds in creating a seemingly straightforward memoir that is actually several subtle things skillfully weaved together:a travel narrative, a fight for personal independence, an investigation of one's ethnic roots (which partially arises from a great deal of meditation over one's own family history).Pham shifts between these eclectic elements with great skill, creating what is both a great Vietnamese story and a very classic sort of American one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent look at Vietnam
I thought this book was, for the most part, extremely well-written. There were some clunky phrases here and there, but most of the writing was vivid and a lot of difficult things expressed quite well. The honesty of much of this book was astounding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman I Would Like You to Know
With the words of the title of this review, Esther Schor introduces the reader to Emma Lazarus (1849 -1887)in her newly-published biography of this late-nineteenth Century American poet, essayist, novelist, critic, and social activist for newly-arrived immigrants. Schor is Professor of English at Princeton University, a poet in her own right, and the editor of the Cambridge Companion to Mary Shelley. Her biography of Emma Lazarus is part of a series of books called "Jewish Encounters" edited by Jonathan Rosen and "devoted to the promotion of Jewish literature, culture, and ideas."

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary story
James McBride creates a not-very-flattering portrait of race in America in this outstanding story of his white Jewish mother and black father and stepfather.Ruth McBride was born an Orthodox Jew who came to America at the age of two. The product of a traditional, arranged, loveless marriage, her family lived in the South, and from a young age she found warmth and love only in the black community. As a teenager she left home for New York, married a black man, raised 8 children, founded a church in Brooklyn, and married again as a widow and raised another 4.
5-0 out of 5 stars A profound reading experience
For nearly 10 years now, I have given this book to others as a gift, especially those who are interested in profound, moving literature. This book FLOWS and speaks to all of us: black, white, Jewish, gentile, young, old.I recommend this book to those I work with, to my son's high school English teachers, to anyone who is searching for a satisfying, uplifting experience.I say experience rather than 'book.'To me, reading this book is an experience.I pull it out and re-read it every year.It encourages me to face hardships, to count my blessings and to recognize that all of us are put on earth for a reason.Thank you, James McBride, for a book that has become a cornerstone in my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A LOVING TRIBUTE TO MOM...
This book is, indeed, a tribute to the author's mother. In it, the author, a man whose mother was white and his father black, tells two stories: that of his mother and his own. Tautly written in spare, clear prose, it is a wonderful story of a bi-racial family who succeeded and achieved the American dream, despite the societal obstacles placed in its way.

3-0 out of 5 stars From the EXAmish.com guy
As a former Amish, I own this book, and I have to agree it was poorly edited, but it is a true-life experience book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and illuminating but poorly edited
This book will be an eye-opener for Americans atavistically fixated on the romanticnotion that the Amish are all honest, quaint, hard-working and simple people. The picture that emerges from this book is of a closed, cult-like society, whose inhabitants are bound to it by fear of damnation and shunning; a religion where personal exploration of the bible is discouraged, and a culture where children may be severely beaten for disobedience or failure to perform daily chores.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am shunned by JW so I know what he talks about.
The practice that Ottie tells about in the booktouches home with me. While I was never Amish , I once attended Jehovah's WitnessesHall for several years, I never became a JW but now I am shunned by family andhave been announced by the local elders that they are not to associate with me. Sad thats not the way Jesus means it to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Frank of China
Feather in the Storm is to Asia in our time what the Diary of Anne Frank is to Europe in World War II. Emily Wu's autobiographical tale of a little girl caught up helplessly in the chaos of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution in China is both heart breaking and inspiring. This is the sort of beautifully composed prose that breaks your heart and then, in the end, encourages you to have hope for the future.Emily Wu is a survivor of an incredibly cruel government and society.Thank goodness she has provided this testament so that those who were lost will not be forgotten and that those who were responsible will also not be forgotten.

5-0 out of 5 stars View of China Usually Hidden from Americans
Feather in the Storm provided me with a stunning insights of life in China during the Cultural Revolution. Emily Wu's recounts through both her memories and extensive research the turbulent and often terrifying lost childhood she experienced. The story is powerful, heartbreaking, a testimony to man's inhumanity to man, and ultimately a tribute to the human spirit that holds out for hope and a future.
5-0 out of 5 stars A story both heartbreaking and uplifting
This book was a revelation to me. It moved me as few other books I have read have, and from the moment I began reading it I could not put it down. Emily Wu's story is a poignant and compelling memoir that describes in intimate detail the impact that China's Cultural Revolution had on her, as a young girl, and on her family. In a beautifully written narrative, Wu tells of the ongoing humiliation, horror and abuse that she and those she loved endured over a period of nineteen years. The book provides insight into the terrible human tragedy and cost inflicted on millions of Chinese, and especially children, by Chairman Mao's so-called Great Leap Forward. But Emily's story is more than that. It is also an unforgettable testament to the human spirit and the will to survive. This is a tale of courage that will affect and inspire everyone who reads it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Queen Elizabeth I (Historic Lives)
Elizabeth I (The British Library, Historic Lives Series) by Susan Doran is a really superb book! Though I have read many books about Queen Elizabeth this one, though concise, thoroughly captures the essence of the history of Elizabeth and her England.Susan Doran provides us a captivating glimpse into the complicated world facing Elizabeth both in her personal and majestic life as she confronts the dynamic political and religious world developing around her and the England she loves.Elizabeth I was a complex person ruling in a complicated world. In a very even handed way, Susan Doran presents how a dynamic Queen Elizabeth, at her best and worst, navigates as best she can, through the perils and complexities confronting her and England.Susan Doran gives us an Elizabeth who is real. She shows Elizabeth as a Queen who has human frailities, who is adept in propaganda, can be as cruel as she is rewarding, yet whose monarchy enthralls and inspires us to this day. Susan Doran's adept use ofa superb collection of illustrations throughout the book really provides a wonderful dimension to her protrayal of Elizabeth as a dynamic queen of England. This is a book I recommend to anyone who has an interest in Elizabeth I, Queen of England.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
This slim volume is only 144 pages including index. Susan Doran has written a complete, if brief, biography of Elizabeth I that hits all the main points of her life and rule. Nothing important seems to have been left out, and the narrative seems unhurried. One could read this book in a fairly short time, and have an understanding of Elizabeth's reign. However, for those who would like a bit more elaboration, Doran includes a Further Reading List at the end.Read more

Editorial Review

Celebrated Stanford University historian Clayborne Carson is the director and editor of the Martin Luther King Papers Project; with thousands of King's essays, notes, letters, speeches, and sermons at his disposal, Carson has organized King's writings into a posthumous autobiography. In an early student essay, King prophetically penned: "We cannot have an enlightened democracy with one great group living in ignorance.... We cannot have a nation orderly and sound with one group so ground down and thwarted that it is almost forced into unsocial attitudes and crime." Such statements, made throughout King's career, are skillfully woven together into a coherent narrative of the quest for social justice. The autobiography delves, for example, into the philosophical training King received at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University, where he consolidated the teachings of Afro-American theologian Benjamin Mays with the philosophies of Locke, Rousseau, Gandhi, and Thoreau. Through King's voice, the reader intimately shares in his trials and triumphs, including the Montgomery Boycott, the 1963 "I Have a Dream Speech," the Selma March, and the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. In one of his last speeches, King reminded his audience that "in the final analysis, God does not judge us by the separate incidents or the separate mistakes that we make, but by the total bent of our lives." Carson's skillful editing has created an original argument in King's favor that draws directly from the source, illuminating the circumstances of King's life without deifying his person. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars like Malcolm X's autobiography
I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X earlier this year, and it gave one radical image of the civil rights movement. Then I read the Autobiography of Martin Luther King, which gave another radical view of the civil rights movement. In my history class, I argued that MLK was over glorified by history, and none of the students read this book.It shows how he was a simple man who was tired of segregation and wanted to fight it, through nonviolent means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I couldn't describe in words how amazing this book is. I read it and felt its beauty. The DVD, "USA THE MOVIE" also has excellent segments that are haunting in which Dr. King speaks over intense footage, DEFINITELY worth watching.I read this book twice and it left me thinking.

3-0 out of 5 stars Martin Luther King Jr.
Bang! and just like that perhaps the greatest Civil rights leader was assonated, shot, and killed. Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta on January 15, 1929. He was raised in a Baptist church where his father was a pastor. Then after childhood King went to Morehouse University in 1944. After he received his masters degree Martin became a pastor like his father and married. Later Martin Luther King organized black leaders in the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference). After writing a book and making a trip to India King returned to be a pastor with his father in 1960. Then in 1963 King's way of peaceful protest was becoming difficult because of police brutality beating and arresting blacks. King is arrested and writes "A Letter from Birmingham Prison" to keep up black spirit. Towards the end of 63 and the beginning of 64 King won Person of the Year and the Nobel Peace Prize. Also soon after that he joined the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). It seemed things were leading to integration until April 4, 1968 when king was on the balcony of a black hotel with to other Black Leaders when he was hit in the neck with a rifle bullet. King died to soon to see integration but his dream would live on.I would recommend The biography of Martin Luther King Jr. because it is a good book about a man's dream to see blacks with whites.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Millions Little Pieces, Jr.
I am currently in Kabul, and have read almost every English-language book on Afghanistan that is popularly available. I have also lived in Kabul and traveled to Feyzbad, Kandahar,Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad, Kunduz and along the Uzbek Border. I speak mediocre Dari. Among the books that I enjoyed were those by Saira Shah's grandmother (try "My Khyber Life") and her father, Idris Shah. The same cannot be said for Saira Shah's. Shah' work, however. Part of my complaint was that the book isn't about anything much - its just a list of what she claims were her experiences in and near Afghanistan.I would compare them to a series of interesting letters detailing what I did on my afghan vacation. What they don't provide is insight into what was happening in Afghanistan or Peshawar, why, or what is going on now, or much cultural or historical information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Myth, identity, realities . . .
Part memoir, part reportage, this beautifully written book is also an inquiry into the nature of myth, identity, and the limits of human endurance. Born in England and raised on the memories of her Afghan father's homeland, the author journeys as a young journalist to Afghanistan during the Soviet Occupation in the 1980s, traveling with the mujahidin rebels, who with massive infusions of weapons from the CIA eventually drive out the Russians and then quickly succumb again to an equally destructive civil war and the inevitable tyranny of the Taliban. A witness to these struggles and the widespread human misery they caused, Shah is present again in 2002 as the Americans retaliate in response to the 9/11 attacks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!
This book is one of the best books I have read.It was touching and made me realise what an amazing life Saira Shah has led. After I closed the book, I could not pick up annother book for a couple of days - I did not want to spoil the feeling it had left me with. This book will move you, make you think and touch you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites...
I became aware of Marthe's story when told I was going to interview her for an article.I found the writing smooth, and the book a quick and educating read.As other reviewers have written, it is filled with events that are intense, suspenseful, sad and hopeful. This is an amazing true story that I'm glad Marthe decided to share.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind Enemy Lines
Behind Enemy Lines is the story of the book's author Marthe Cohn.Written in novel-like fashion the story grips the reader from the first page and does not let get until the last. That Ms. Cohn, and the majority of her immediate family were able to survive the German occupation of France is miracle enough for any book. What she did after the liberation, joining the French Army, crossing the border by herself into Nazi Germany, spying on the Germans is truly a remarkable tale. Her life would make a great movie. We are very fortunate that Ms. Cohn took the time to write this book because this is the type of story that needs to be read and remembered by all.The only problem was one glaring historical typo that has Paris being liberated by the forces of Colonel Leclerc and his Second Armored Division.Leclerc was a general.I very highly recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind Enemy Lines never left my hands
This enthralling book captivated my attention for hours on end. It gave an interesting insight, both witty and serious, into the world during Hitler. Not only did it focus on the Jews, but also on the Germans who were not Nazis. The depth of the story was incredible. I've had to reread it several times because of the effect it had on me. And my first word when I finished this book was "Wow". If I can, I'm going to encourage my city school system to add this book to the required reading for high school students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars must read book
A fantastic book showing God's faithfulness to us.Very, very interesting and I think everyone should read.It is also a must for any church library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith Tested to the Utmost Survives
Darlene's story could be included in the New Testament book of Hebrews, where the heroes of faith and their deeds are listed. It impacted me as much as reading "The Hiding Place" and "God's Smuggler". What kept her sane in captivity and isolation was the Scripture and hymns which articulated her faith. God showed her that He was there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brought tears to my eyes
Darlene suffered terribly in the prisoner of war camp, but her faith remained strong throughout. God answered her prayers in wonderful ways. Fed only rice or gruel while in solitary confinement, one day she prayed for a banana, a single banana. She considered all the ways God could answer her prayer and deliver that banana. Through the guard? No... The night watchman? No... As she began to doubt that God could grant her that request, she was delivered an armload of bananas - 92 of them! - from the most unlikely source.

The best way to destroy sales is for the "author" to blast portions of the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like the rantings of a confused teenager
The man is 30 and still acts like he is in high school.

4-0 out of 5 stars T.O. Review
Recently I read the book TO by Terrell Owens with Jason Rosenhaus. The book is written by Terrell Owens, otherwise known as "TO", to tell the media his side of the conflict between him and the Philadelphia Eagles organization. It all starts when Terrell and the team's quarterback Donovan McNab get in a minor dispute, but the two strong personalities go at it for the remainder of the season and manage to drag the head coach Andy Reid into it. The trouble only gets bigger when the media continues to accuse Terrell of different things like faking an injury, and starting a fight with a teammate. Things continue to plummet down when Terrell feels he deserves more money than he is making and the Eagles management disagree.
