5-0 out of 5 stars A True Forrest Gump
What a story! Born one of 17 children in a poor, black, Kentucky farm, Jimmy Winkfield won the Kentucky Derby twice. He tried again in 1903 but failed and his career was over. Except that by moving to Europe and Russia he continued as a top rider in the Sport of Kings.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring and insightful
It took me months to track down a copy of Connie's book, but it was well worth it. Growing up as a second generation Korean American interested in becoming a journalist, I knew of very few Korean and Asian American journalists, especially women. I found Kang's memoir inspiring, detailed and well written. I read the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. There were so many moments in the story that I felt like she was talking directly to me. Even if you're not Asian American, the story is universal and explores the questions of identity, understanding, and growing up.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very well written journey
This is basically an autobiography of Connie's life.Very well written and insightful at times. She can look at Korean culture from both within and without.Overall, I'd recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars dry
It was difficult to finish reading this book. It's very boring, mainly because the writer seems so reluctant to reveal herself and her feelings. For example, she falls madly in love with her husband and suddenly they aredivorced. Why she would write a memoir is hard to figure out. Since she isinterested in a particular period of Korean history, she should havewritten a journalistic history book. ... Read more

this book repulsed, angered, and offended me and yet i find myself wanting to read it again. i'm amazed by this book. though disdainful himself, cleaver was still an amazing writer who was daringly bold enough to unleash the esoteric wall of the ideologies of the Black man in the 60's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My eyes have been opened!!!
Other than Maya's poems, I have never read her autobiographies. WOW barely describes what I read and felt. I always thought of Maya to be just what she is....a poet, an author. To read how her early life was, I see how her life's experiences brought her to where she is today. Not only does she speak honestly, her style of writing makes one feel they are her in the books. The size of the book may seem intimidating, but I could not put it down. I had to schedule myself to study for my class and read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Maya Angelou's Collected Biographies
I purchased this book after reading, "I know why the caged bird sings", I found myself captivated by the spellbounding aura of maya angelou and in a thirst for her story purchased this book. I have drank her words readily and my only regret is that like all great things, the pages shall run out and my feast shall come to an end. This is a wonderful gift for any Maya Angelou fan, it branches outside of her poetry and makes the goddess of words appear a little more human.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written book
This is a heartfelt book; I can't think of another book that spells out the bicultural life so clearly. Arana has cut a new path here. This is not so much about being Hispanic American as being a new and different kind of American: split, with differing loyalties, and with all kinds of doubts along the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars APretentious Family Memoir
My wife grew up in Ecuador and moved to the United States 8 years ago, at age 31. I am always interested in better understanding her cross-cultural transition and that's why I picked up "American Chica". But actually this book is more of a family memoir, describing the difficult marriage of Arana's parents. The majority of the book is about her early childhood years growing up in Peru with her father's aristocratic family. The last couple of chapters do recount her family's move to New Jersey. But, while her father was miserable living the "gringo" lifestyle, Marie and her siblings appeared to make the transition quite easily - as children often do - despite facing racism as the only latino kids in their school system.

5-0 out of 5 stars was afraid at first
let me just say sister souljah is one powerhouse of a lady. if anyone thinks this book isnt about uplifting our race then they must be white.this book has made me look deeper within my self.I stated I was afraid in my title that was because I wasnt sure I was able to hand what might be said.I have had this book for more than a year and I'm glad i decided to read it awesome sista thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such is life
After reading "No Disrespect", I have learned that the behavior of a race is greatly influenced by the surroundings and the brainwashing of other cultures. Although many people will not admit to being prejudiced, the evidence is apparent. I myself feel that African Americans need to learn about our beginnings just like the teachers in the schools want us to learn about the beginnings of this country. February should not be the only month for Black History. We are black everyday we are on this earth. Sista Souljah kept it real in her book. "Black Problems" are real and will always exist. This is a book I recommend for teenagers to read to get a jump on life and the experiences they willface. I have much love for my people, and want us to again unify and take care of business; raising strong black children.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Disrespect
You talk about bigots! We have adopted 3 black children, 'tho we already have 5 biological. We are so darn happy that we have saved our 3 from the horable, unetical, imoral life that is epicted in this book.If that is how Sister has lived her life, we see absolutely no reason why she would brag about it.Also, while white students are worrying about their student loans, and wondering how in the world they will ever be able to pay them back, little or nothing was said about the African-American students concerns about their pay-back.Oh, yes, I forgot "We Owe You"(?) Great that Sister Souljah is trying to help her "brothers" and "sisters", but maybe she should start with teaching them some morals, and maybe cleaning up her act while she is at it.Sister is a talanted writer. We hope that someday she will find something more uplifting to write about. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and insightful!
This was a great book to read and a very interesting story about one of banking's oldest and greatest families. It was wonderfully written and has numerous insights on what it takes to be a success. Ron Chernow seems to have an eye for picking out the important little details as well as giving the reader a great sense of the big picture. Also some great history lessons about WWII. It gave me a view of the war which I hadn't seen before from Jews who were at the top of the economic scale. The history lesson was worth the entry fee. Highly recomended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another beautifully written biography by Ron Chernow!
I didn't think a book about the Warburg Dynasty could be all that interesting: How wrong I was!I enjoyed every page by this delightful author who can turn the most mundane item into juicy reading material. A real "eye opener." It's hard to believe the incidents in this girl's life really happened and therefore makes you feel very humble. It was interesting and informative to read about the life of a female slave and to have the book actually written by one made it more heart rendering. The book is well written and is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read
"Incidents" was one of the best personal recollections of slavery that I have read, particularly because it is from the female perspective. The book gave me great insight into the daily horrors of the lives of black woman during that time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing...just incredibly amazing!
This is a very easy to read book that I think should be read in high-schools.Jacobs was a slave who wrote this--not someone looking in from the outside, so it's her firsthand experiences of life as a slave.I wrote a report on Jacobs for a college English course after reading one story she wrote, and then I found out she wrote more and had to buy the book.I couldn't put it down.It opened my eyes to how brutal things really were, and how difficult is must have been. She's just amazing!!! ... This book is an intelligent, page-turning treatise of the enslaving of women and other horrific dangers of Sharia law and extreme Islamic fundamentalism. Despite all odds, Miss Etta is still with us:read this book if you have the courage to learn what life 'on the road' was like for an entertainer in the 50's and 60's, with the difficulty enhanced tremendously for African-Americans.The debt today's divas owe Etta and others from 40 years ago will never be repaid. The book pulls no punches: white record label owners shafted their acts in every way imaginable, yet there's a snapshot of Leonard Chess that you'll be thankful for.Etta writes of doing heroin with Little Esther, being in and out of jail, being up and down, getting her "X" by joining the Black Muslims, touring with Little Richard, the dangers of driving through Dixie in the late 50's and early 60's with a blond 'do' (and a monkey).Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not A Stand Up Guy
The book is wriiten in a matter that Red is bragging about anything. You can tell he was not so close to Whitey if you read all the Southie Books that are out there. All he was to Whitey was a cocaine dealer who paid 'tribute' to him.Nothing more and nothing less.He also seemed to forget people such as Freddy Weichel and Tommy Dixon in his book.I believe he changed those names knowing that there are still people around that are loyal to them that can take care of him.Someone also already stated here that he didn't rat because he was never asked to.The book still had its moments like when he discussed his trips to FLorida and the time that he spent in prison. He lies when he claims he was Whitey's Protege.Whitey only had one Protege and that was Kevin Weeks. I have read Street Soldier, Brutal, Black Mass, The Brother's Bulger, All Souls, and A Criminal and An Irishman. This one ranks last on the list of Southie Books.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no honor in this line of work
I gave this book a 5 star because it is a very compellingbook to read. A book that you cnanot put down. But the book's flaw, which the author believes is his strong point is the author's self description of honor used over and over in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent storyteller
I loved this book, and I love how the author writes. She tells her stories not in a typical narrative, factual, journalistic way, but in a stylized, "storylike" way (does that make sense?!). All of the stories focused on the different men in her family, especially her father. They all center on the Chinese man's experience in America, from the railroad days onward, and tells of their struggles, triumphs and failures. As a whole the book is about how these experiences shaped the men in her family. She intersperses a few legends here and there, just like she does in Woman Warrior. I enjoy how she takes her family history and literally turns it into a work of art. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating jumble of memoir, fable, and reporting
In China Men, Kingston took me on a ride all over the literary landscape. In general, I thought her book was an interesting tossed salad of memoir, fable, reporting, and poetry. As a reader, it reminded me of a scrapbook of family stories, newspaper articles, heritage legends -- all assembled in one place.5-0 out of 5 stars An Experience To Remember...........
The China Men by Maxine Hong Kingston was a very interesting book. It contains stories of Chinese men traveling to America in the 1800's and working on the transcontinental railroads, in Sierra Nevada. The author shares a lot of details in the stories about her family traveling to America. She retold the story from a male's perspective of what hardships they've been through to get to America, in search for the Golden Mountains. A rich country that they about which is full of riches. As they reach to America what they thought was the Golden Mountains was just a land of hard labor and low paying jobs. Some of them regretted coming to America, but they couldn't go back to their country because they had no money. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This book is intresting because Flores was not an orginal member of the party, like some many of the biographies by former Panthers, he joined when they were already underway. He provied insight to the Panthers of the early to late 70s and what happened to the party during those years. He is honest and looks back at the actions with incredible thought and emotion which makes an excellent read and a great piece of Panther history. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Feminine Pride Shines in "Sugar in the Raw"
This small, paperback captures the emotional tales of young, African American girls from across the United States.Discussions of self-esteem, identity, racism, prejudice, and relationships permeate throughout Rebecca Carroll's book.Readers of all ages amd races come away with a profound understanding of what it means to be Black and female, but most importantly, the pride and strength that these young women carry within themselves in order to survive in America's society.Young girls of this culture will undoubtedly regard this book as a treasured resource since these humorous, personal and frank stories connect them to a sense of comaraderie, support and confidence.Carroll only reveals fifteen of fifty stories, which leaves you wanting and wondering about the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age Stories
SUGAR IN THE RAW is an inspiring collection of essays written by 15 African American young women who, as the backcover asserts, "refuse to be ignored." 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for african-american girls
Just a short note to say that I purchased this book for two young women (12 & 14).They received the books as christmas gifts. Yes, they would have preferred clothing or cash, but once they started reading theycouldn't put it down.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WWII Japanese-American INTERNMENT through the eyes of a child.
2000+ American Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines (MILITARY PERSONNEL) died during the Japanese Air Attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, and as a direct result, President Roosevelt issued Presidential Executive Order 9066, forcing 110,000+ Japanese-Americans into 10 Military Internment Camps (Concentration Camps -- complete with Armed Soldiers, Machine Guns, Barbed Wire Fences, Spotlights, and Guard Towers). Each person subject to EO-9066 could only take what they could carry with their own two hands (and nothing more), leaving eveything else behind.Oh yes, the Federal Government also froze ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Japanese-Americans through to the end of the war, so they could not get any cash out of the bank nor pay any bills. As a direct result, Japanese-Americans lost her homes due to nonpayment of Property Taxes. In Jeanne's Dad's case, someone stole their fishing boat while they were incarcerated. Her dad was a fisherman, and the boat had been the primary means of support for their family.
5-0 out of 5 stars Japanese Americans Internment Camps-WWII
This story delves into the culture of the Japanese and applies it to their life in the Manzanar interment camps during World War II. An insightful must-read.

1-0 out of 5 stars YUCK!
No offense to the author or anything but this book was really boring!!! It just doesn't seem to stick with one situation. Jeanne's family leaves there home, goes to Manzanar, then kicked out of Manzanar, etc. It was just really boring and I was going to be put to sleep, this book couldn't keep my attention on it for long. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Our History
The political autobiography was published in 1974 by Random House and reissued in 1988 and 2004.
4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
I've met Angela Y. Davis since I currently attend UCSC where she is a professor of History of Consciousness. While I do applaud her for being an intelligent, sophisticated, and strong woman I must say this book tends to rub me the wrong way at times. What appears to be my reasoning towards being criticalis how there are moments when it is obvious that Ms. Davis gets prejudicial towards people that "wronged" her. This is not to say that they are entirely innocent but some people who read this autobiography do interpret it as prejudicial towards one race. I am not here to say that all white people are goody two shoes but there are plenty of those from European descent that are nurturing and loving people. Certainly Ms. Davis would not appreciate it if someone called her a racial slur or categorized all African Americans or Marxists as radical and violent. This is why I just cannot rank this book of hers 5 out of 5 stars. She is a wonderful storyteller and very engaging in her speeches but, with all people, she does need to strive for improvement in some areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Angela Davis is such a good storyteller, and the book was very easy read. I loved the style it was written in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Their journey on bicycles with their children's book manuscripts among their few possessions is recounted here with pictures
Curious George is beloved and known by adults and kids around the world - but few have heard of the history of his creators, Hans and Margret Rey, who had to flee their Paris home as the Germans invaded. Their journey on bicycles with their children's book manuscripts among their few possessions is recounted here with pictures, flare and drama. Borden uses primary resources, including Rey's own pocket diaries, to tell their tale in The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape Of Margret And H.A. Rey, with Allan Drummond's drawings and vintage black and white photos throughout enhancing the biography and action.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for All Ages
Voila! It was there! A book that I had been waiting to read. On my desk I found The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H. A. Rey by Louise Borden, illustrated by Allan Drummond. Oooh, it was a nice looking book!
4-0 out of 5 stars How Curious George Came to America
I gave this children's biography to my husband who collects Curious George memorabilia, but everyone in the family has taken time to read it, because three generations of us have loved the work of Margret and Hans Rey. This is the interesting story of their escape from Paris on bikes just as the Nazis began to occupy the city. It's a perfect choice for a fourth or fifth grader who is learning about World War II or one who really loved Curious George as a preschooler. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Deep Story
This was a very good perspective on Taoist miracle working. It briefly mentions many techniques, without explaining them, so this is not a manual for learning Taoism. Some of it is unbelievable, but as a story it is excellent. It mentions many books, mostly from the last thousand years. It provokes the reader into more study.

2-0 out of 5 stars Close the Dragon Gate
Great disservices to people whom are searching for information and enlightenment on Taoism. The authors used a map of china and a few books on Taoism to take the reader on an almost 300 page fairy tale coated to read like a biography. The characters shift personality quicker than a chameleon does color.I think there is a story in the book but the contrived situations get in the way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seems to be a fake
This book looks like pure advertisment of Wang Liping who is said to be chosen as 18th generation transmitter by one Taoist sect. Difficult to read because every second page I stumbled over direct or masked praise on Wang Liping / sect abilities. In the end (as expected) Wang Liping finishes with giving lectures to hundreds of stude
