5-0 out of 5 stars Would you die to enter another country?
Would you die to enter another country? THE REAPER'S LINE: LIFE AND DEATH ON THE MEXICAN BORDER comes from a U.S. Customs special agent who has spent some thirty years on the U.S.-Mexico border as a federal agent. His account of corruption, mass murder, gunfights and dangerous liaisons and interactions makes for a charged story of drug wars, illegal aliens and danger.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Reaper's Line
An eye-opening first hand account of life on the border and the never ending "War on Drugs." Mr. Morgan holds no punches as he paints a picture of corruption and ineptitude within the ranks of our own government agencies. His passion for justice and commitment to uphold the law of the land evokes a sense of pride and hope that each agent's commitment will not be undermined by the American bueruecratic system.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY - The Truth
Having lived with the problems of a border community for years, it is refreshing to see the problem brought to light, removed from the shadows of politics and media hype. This story clearly shows how certain governmental agencies are playing "games" with number and budgets with little or no concern for the impact on the citizen. The citizens of both country are caught in the crossfire.Read the book -- It is outstanding! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story!
The Final Frontiersman is a fascinating story of one man's personal journey from a difficult background in Wisconsin to the freedom and challenges of life in the most remote region in the U.S.The man, Heimo Korth, unexpectedly finds romance and a life partner - and establishes a close knit family while living outside the margins of what some call "civil society."A clear and wonderfully told story which unapologetically describes how Heimo and his native spouse, Edna, live a subsistence lifestyle - primarily on freshly killed, free-ranging caribou and moose. It also describes how swiftly tragedy can strike.
5-0 out of 5 stars To the Korths
I just finished reading "The Final Frontiersman" and would recommend it to anyone. It's well-written, entertaining, and truly educational, not only about the hardships and joys of life in the Arctic bush but about the politics of Alaskan wilderness "preservation."
5-0 out of 5 stars Final Frontiersman
Most people do not understand what it is like to live in the bush, they are city people who just stay indoors most of their lives, they believe that people should not hunt or kill animals for their fur or for their meat, they read a book but dont like it becuase someone killed an animal in it, boo hoo. They are simpleminded people who dont know any better, natives and residents in Alaska do this everyday, and it most likely will no be changed for a long time, since they grew up around such things and live to do it every day. This book shows what it is really like in the Alaskan bush and if you dont like it, does it look like we care? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Friend of Mine Recommended and I love her for it
A friend of mine recommended this book to me and I am so glad she did. A sweet and entertaining read that dipped into the more important parts of a young man's life. I loved Moehringer's moments of clarity that he disperses throughout the text - moments he remembers with "the men" that he knows shaped the man he was to become. Never overly sentimental but clearly emotional in a practical, thankful, respectful way. Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great American memoir
Unlike any other memoir I've read.Yes, it has the telltale family strife, growing pains, life lessons etc., but the setting and premise of the story is very unique.I have never heard of a bar described in so many ways, it often reads likes poetry.I guarantee you will not be able to enter a bar and see it in the same light again! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Going Home Again...
I really enjoyed this book. It consists of about 70 or so very short stories (each maybe two or three pages) about going home. I am currently getting ready to move away from the town I've lived in pretty much my whole life, and am kinda bummed about it, but reading this book was just what I needed. It reminds us that no matter how far away we get from home or family, and regardless of how long we're gone...coming back is such a welcoming feeling. I look forward to the next Rocking Chair Reader: Memories From the Attic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Neighbors, Traditions, Community Pride
We all know about the wildly popular "Chicken Soup for the Soul" anthologies. The "Rocking Chair" readers are just as good if not better. What makes this first series book different is that its stories are not only based on smalltown America, but as an added feature, the book profiles about 10 of these small towns, giving the reader its history and town facts. If your small town isn't mentioned, you'll be familiar with at least one - the book's that encompassing. Each writer takes you on a journey into their own precious past, where life had a different taste and feel. The stories are a celebrated snapshot into someone's life, someone's past, into someone's heart. You won't be disappointed. Helen Kay Polaski has done a wonderful job in not only her editing skills, but in compiling tales of what it's like to come home, even if it's only through our hearts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and easy, relaxing reading.
Ms. Rutherford's book takes you back to a bygone era, even if you were never there to begin with.It gives you a glimpse of life when it was tough, but the people were tougher. They worked hard and loved hard and made their own happiness.I would advise you to read the book and get to know them.

3-0 out of 5 stars fun to remember
Although the author is ten years my senior, and grew up in a different mountain region than I did, I still was able to relate to much of what she mentions. Of course, there's much I would be happy to forget. All in all, the book is good, although I did begin to second guess the author's memory when she mentions pretending to be Patsy Cline while playing her guitar in the outhouse as a young girl. Seeing that Cline didn't become known until the mid to late 1950's, the author would have been thirty years old. Not trying to nitpick, but that just stuck in my mind.

Editorial Review

This well-balanced assessment of Sigurd Olson (1899-1982) pays as much attention to his spiritual quest as to his activism in defense of America's natural resources with such groups as The Wilderness Society and the National Parks Association. Olson found a sense of completeness while hiking, canoeing, and hunting in the northern Midwest. He conveys these feelings in influential books such as Read more

After reading five books by Sigurd F. Olson I felt it only right to read his biography.A Wilderness Within:The Life of Sigurd F. Olson was an insightful look at an incredible person.4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and broad review of the life ofSig Olson.
Anyone who has enjoyed the incredible beauty of Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area owes a debt to Sigurd Olson, subject of David Backe's "A Wilderness Within". This well-written book helps us understand Sig and how his intense passion to become a significant writer intertwined with his deep spiritual need for wilderness. The book may go a bit overboard in emphasizing some of his shortcomings: his temper, his need to be important, his occasional mistakes, but it also makes clear how much those close to him loved him. It is painful to consider how much the northern Minnesota wilderness would have been developed and decimated but for his efforts. TH Bracken MD Onamia MN ... Read more

"Irish storyteller Marrie Walsh pens a memoir rich with the gifts of warmth, magic and wonder, revisting the scenes of her youth, where every neighbor was family, where hermits and bogey men and ghosts were all equally real and frightening, and where time seemed to have stopped for a while."(synopsis by Alibris)
5-0 out of 5 stars A country life classic
Reading this book recently allowed me to discover a worthy successor to Flora Thompson's "Lark Rise to Candleford".Which to my mind stands as the classic textured literary time machine, that allows the reader to taste, touch, hear & smell a bygone era in full measure.Marrie Walsh has created a minor masterpiece with her (first?) book. Not only will those devotees of the country life memoirs find similarities with Thompson, but also touches of Miss Read as well as WB Yeats and Thomas Hardy here. The bitter as well as the sweet with a magical touch of folklife for good measure.Highly recommended. And may we see many more works from Ms Walsh's pen.

Northern Memories: More High-Spirited Tales Of "Growing Up North" by Jerry Harju is the latest in a series of nostalgic and humorous autiobiographical memories about life, family and community in the snow country of Upper Michigan. Set in the 1930s and 40s, among a family that was short on money but didn't let that get in the way of having fun, Northern Memories is a wondrous look at daily life over half a century ago, with wry humor, enduring sentiment and a deep reverence for snow-covered homeland. Also very highly recommended are Jerry Harju's three previous volumes of personal memoirs: Northern Reflections (North Harbor Publishing, 0967020514), Northern D'Lights (North Harbor Publishing, 0932212816), and Northern Passages (Avery Color Studios, 0932212867). ...
