Keep looking.Brunt didn't find him.
This is a reasonably well-written book by somebody who is supposed to be an expert on sports, though some of his hyperbole makes me wonder about that.(He describes a game where Orr got three goals and two assists as the most amazing, incredible, unbelievable performance by a defenceman in the history of the sport, when half a dozen defencemen had had 4 goal games, others had 6+ point games, and Orr himself would do better in subsequent years.)

Eleven Seconds review
In Eleven Seconds, a story about a young man at the age of twenty-one living life and one event happens to change it all. Playing in his first collegiate game of hockey, Travis Roy crashed the corner after a dump in, tripped, fell, and broke his fourth vertebrae and becomes paralyzed from his neck down. This single event changes the way he and his family act towards each other. The story goes through his amazing recovery and the heart and determination he had. The author portrays Travis Roy as a hero to those that are in deep pain or trouble. He accomplishes this by showing the good and bad times in his recovery stages. After a few months at the hospital, Travis Roy wants to get back into the world and show that this freak accident will not keep him down. He returns to college and tries to become a normal student, but this is impossible because he has become a well-known person due to the accident. The grit and determination of Mr. Roy and his family members through the hard times to get to a level of peace and acceptance of what has happend is amazing. This story makes you, the reader, feel that you just need to make the best of the hand that is dealt and that if anything goes wrong you just have to deal with it and make the best of the situation. Eleven Seconds is a great book and should be read by all.

Reading this brought that night back
On Oct. 20, 1995, two of my friends and I gleefully took our seats in Walter Brown arena.We'd saved up the money to purchase season tickets (huge money for undergraduates), and couldn't wait to see the triple crown banner be raised.The beginning of the night was all of the heartpounding celebration it could be.
Worth More Than 11Sec.
If your looking for a book that lets you get into the world of college hockey this is it.Its a heart felt story of a kid who is a great hockey player and dreams of playing for the University of Boston.He does so and his dreams come true when he finally hits the ice.However he only sees 11 seconds of ice time.He checks a player in the boards and breaks his neck, his whole college career ends in just 11 sec of ice time.The rest of the story tells about his life after hockey as a former player now confined to a wheelchair.It goes into detail about how his family must change, his girlfriend must change and how he must change all due to an accident.The book is not only a good ready, but also an easy read.I found that is was hard to put this down even for a min.I have to admit as a I guy I try not to show emotion, but there are times while reading this book that I did get a tear or two in my eyes.The book makes you think and also you will come to love this kid when you are done reading.I know I have!!!! ... Mr. Hockey, plain and simple...
I read this book back in November of 1999.The co-author Frank Condron did an excellent job with Gordie Howe in putting this historical book together.On top of the simple fact that a picture is worth 1,000 words. The whole book is a Hockey Pictoral Treasure.Mr. Condron did an excellentjob of writing this book.What I mean by that is.Simply because youdon't feel your reading Gordies words.Its like Mr. Howe is right next toyou and he is pointing at each picture as you turn every page.Also it isquite obvious after all the press, awards and fame, Gordie Howe is still agentleman.

The ULTIMATE hockey book!!!
I've owned this book for over 20 years, and I still pick it up from time to time to read it . .it is honestly that interesting and compelling.In no way would I consider myself as being a New York Ranger fan whatsoever.That being said, when I had finished reading this book, I found myself at times actually rooting for the Rangers in the playoffs based on the writing skill of "Ratso" Sloman.It is that good.If you can only read one hockey book in your lifetime, read this one.

Thin Ice is a must read !
It's absolutely asinine that this book was not among "The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time" compiled by the staff of Sports Illustrated Magazine. It is a must read, you do not need to be a hockey or sports fan to enjoy this read, it is the "Ball Four" of hockey books. Don't miss it, if you can find it !

"Ratso" and the Manhatten Rangers !
Although I'm not a NY Ranger's fan by any stretch of the imagination, this book is a long forgotten classic and a must read for every hockey fan. "Ratso", (Larry Sloman) did a great job in profiling the NY Ranger players on and off the ice and he is able to insinuate, instances of sexcapades and drug use among the players and still protect their privacy, he takes us behind the scenes of the Manhatten party life with celebrities, models and hockey players. I was able to find this book in an old inner city library sometime in the late 70's, early 80's. The chance of you finding it now are slim and nil, but if you do get a hold of it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did. ... Read more

Very good hockey book
For a fan of Hockey, Dryden's book provides a fascinating inside look at the life of a prefessional NHL team even though the 70's were a much different era in Hockey and sports in general. Detailing not just game highlights and statistics but really concentrating on the day to day travel and practice grind, the book really get's inside the dynamics of a great team.
A very special book...
The combination of a person who is both highly educated and a 6 time Stanley Cup Winner can only produce an extraordinary book that goes beyond other sports biographies. Here we deal with a person who is consciously making an end to a very successful career and upon doing so reflects on his personal past, but also the experience of being part of a team and playing hockey in a legendary hockey town, that is unique in its own political and linguistic division. He then proceeds to review the history of the game, explaining the difference between European style hockey and Canadian and ultimately in the new edition comparing his perspective at the time to the current state of the international and expanded NHL. Particularly with regard to the recent lockout this new epilogue is extremely interesting. This is a really unique book, but what makes it most attractive is that any hockey player will recognize the description of locker room and team behavior, no matter what level you play at. A true story of the Early Transition from Socialism
As an economist who has often worked on the transition from socialism, I found this book to be the best single source of what really went on---OK, that's partly because the book is hilarious and has one of the best book covers of all time.But Rubinstein should have won a Pulitzer prize for managing to capture what was going on behind the scenes on the socio-economic front in the early years of the transition in such an entertaining way.Let's hope Atilus escapes and there's a sequel.

enjoyable, true adverture
The Ballad of the Whiskey Robber is the story of Attila Ambrus, the infamous bank robber of Budapest during the 1990s.The biography follows Ambrus from his childhood as an ethnic Hungarian in Romania to his escape to Hungary, through his years as an unpaid goaltender for a local professional hockey team while moonlighting as a fur pelt smuggler and eventual bank robber, to his eventual capture, escape from prison, and recapture.It was an interesting life, during an interesting time (the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe as it was replaced by corrupt, crony-capitalism), captured well by Julian Rubinstein.
Great book, but the facts aren't always true
I remember going to a hockey game and seeing Ambrus Attila play when I was a child. I'm Hungarian and grew up in Budapest and was very excited when I received this book as a present. But after reading only 20 pages I noticed that some of the facts weren't true (i.e. the checkered taxis aren't black&white - they are red&white - and that's just one of the smaller incorrect facts), and I think the author overexaggerates sometimes to be funny. The book is an interesting history lesson about the 1990s in Hungary, but don't believe evrything you read. Believe me, it wasn't that bad! I do remember the occasional (very few) car bombs and murders, but if you weren't in the mafia, you didn't have to worry. I was never scared. The government is always corrupt - isn't it in every country? :)

Great Read
I actually bought this book from the Dan Bylsma WEB site.THe book was sent autographed to my son for this past Christmas.Most of the content is directed toward kids interested in playing hockey and who have questions from how do I do a certain drill to what if my parents are embarrasing me.My 8 year old enjoyed the book very much and continues to read it again and again.I still pick it up as well.If you haven't read the first book "So Your Son Want's to Play in the NHL", another great read.

Hockey With A Purpose
After receiving the book, I read it throughout the day as opportunity presented itself.I hated to put it down when I had other stuff to do.I felt like I was being forced to leave the game before it was over. A Dream,A Team
I couldn't put it down. A GREAT book!. I read it over and over again. It's very inspiring. Helped to recongized the importance of fulfilling a dream. It's way more than a hockey book it teaches life gulidlines.

Hockey Insider tells all.
If you like hockey or even if you don't you won't be able to put this book down. It's moving to the point of being captivating. In telling his comeback story Ken Baker reveals much about the inside workings of minor league pro hockey. He is transparent about his own life as well as presenting an expose on pro hockey.It's easy reading but also inspiring. This is one you'll want to read and pass on to your friends.

Very inspiring..I could not read it fast enough!
This book is fantastic.It gives anyone with a dream encouragement.Mr. Baker had to overcome tremendous forces to realize his dream of returning to hockey.I played hockey and I had to quit because of head injuries but I think about returning again to play.Well this book certainly gives one a source of inspriation.He writes really well, and I found myself wishing that I could read a lot faster many times because the book was so exciting that I could not wait to find out what would happen next.The way he writes his book makes the reader feel as if he/she is actually there and living Mr. Baker's dream along with him on every step of the way.I would recommend this book to a lot of people, even those who are not particularly interested in hockey.It does dig down into the unseen side of minor league hockey and some of the issues that are probably left unknown by the average fan, but it should make people appreciate the players more by knowing what they have to endure and play through. ... Not just for hockey fans.
A tragic tale well told. This book is a fitting tribute to the memory of Dan Snyder and the way his parents forgave Danny Heatley for his death.

More than a hockey book ...
The title of my review says it all, this is more than a hockey book ... it's more of a book that plumbs the depths of human emotions and explores the ties that bind young men. Yes, hockey is the background, but it easily could've been about other subjects.

This is a great book. I'm not a huge hockey fan but I felt awful about this tragedy. This book describes the family's amazing ability to forgive, despite such a tragic loss. Well intentioned but superficial.
Given that this is virtually the ONLY book in existence concerning women's ice hockey, I'd give this book a 5.The authors and publisher deserve plaudits for writing about this subject.On the downside, this book, when compared to objective standards of quality and editing, stands in need of improvement and could have benefited from further refinement.One example: One entire chapter is devoted to just one woman from the sport (out of many that could have been chosen) who blathers on and on and on about her views of ice hockey.(Who cares?)This chapter of the book reads as if the two writers just set a tape recorder down in front of the person and then typed everything she said verbatim.If I wanted to read a magazine interview, I could have gone elsewhere such as reading women's ice hockey stories and interviews in some of the hockey trade journals.A book is supposed to be a SYNTHESIS of various points of view.I appreciate the two authors showing me their raw interview material but this kind of self-promotion by one individual female ice hockey player belongs in an appendix at the BACK of the book, and NOT in a book chapter. Certainly everyone would agree that this kind of monologue by one single female ice hockey player SHOULD NOT HAVE CONSTITUTED AN ENTIRE BOOK CHAPTER!C'mon!Let's do some of our own writing and research.And what qualifications does this person have to presume to speak for the entire sport anyway?Second point of criticism:While the story of women's ice hockey is in part a story of sexism and the struggle between the sexes, I think the tone of the book and the title could have been less adversarial and resentful toward the existence of men's ice hockey."Too Many Men on the Ice" makes it seem like a zero sum game.Can't men as well as women play the sport?The title suggests not.In fact, the title and the tone of the book suggest that there are "too many men on the ice" playing the sport to the exclusion of women.This is not what wome! n's ice hockey is about.There should be enough room in the sport for both men and women to play ice hockey.This isn't a war between the sexes.Women just want to be recognized and granted equal rights to train, get appropriate coaching, ice time, etcetera just like the men.Do the authors really believe that there are "too many men on the ice?"If so, I am disappointed in them as people and as female journalists and authors.The authors' book title and their hostile and adversarial tone toward male ice hockey players undercuts what these fine women players stand for:No one should be saying that there are "too many men on the ice!"Nor should anyone ever say that there are "too many women on the ice."There should be enough ice time for everyone who wants to play the sport.The book comes off as a well intentioned but somewhat superficial attempt to cover the sport.I suspect other writers will come along and pick up where these two left off.But nonetheless, hats off to these two young authors for devoting themselves to a worthy subject. ... "WITHOUT FEAR" by Kevin Allen and Bob Duff is one of the best books ever published on the history of NHL goaltenders.This just published 280 page hard cover coffee table edition is a must for hockey fans of all ages, and especially all those junior goalies out there?The 50 greatest goalies in history are ranked and profiled in great detail.Hockey legend Johnny Bower gives his commentary on each selection as well.One can't argue with the selection of the 50 goalies, but you can have fun with friends, arguing if Patrick Roy[#1 ranked]is the greatest of them all?All the great names of the past and present are here to read about, like Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Eddie Giacomin, Tony Esposito, and Gump Worsley just to name a few from the old school.Modern players like Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Dominik Hasek, Ed Belfour, Mike Vernon and Curtis Joseph are some of the newer entries.Some of the goalies profiled like Rogie Vachon, Lorne Chabot, Davey Kerr and Roger Crozier were never elected to the hall of fame, but are surely deserving of consideration?I consider this book to be a bible of goaltending history, and a must have book to make any hockey library complete. ... Great Hockey book

Goon-Great book
There are some great stories, I was shocked coming from Johnstown,Pa how many references and quotes there were from former Chiefs and guys whose names I hadn't heard in years..truly could not put it down!

awesome book
I bought this book for my dad who is also the father of a Junior A hockey player in Montana.He LOVES this book- quotes from it and laughs so hard he can barely talk.Highly recommend this one!

Excellent book. Well written, first-person account of life in the minors. Really enjoyed it. This is the first book I've ever read start to finish in one sitting. It ain't Shakesphere--and that's a good thing. I hate Shakesphere. This is an easy read, fun and enjoyable.
