5-0 out of 5 stars For Laci
This book is an incredible tribute by a mother to her daughter. Every mom should read this, I loved it and could hardly put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo, Sharon!
I still can't stop crying as I write this, having just finished this heart-wrenching, inspiring book that should be a must read for anyone who is a mother or who has ever loved a child. Sharon Rocha brings her beautiful daughter to life again and ensures that Laci will live forever. She certainly will live in my heart forever and will always have my thoughts and prayers with her. God Bless Sharon Rocha and her angel, Laci.

4-0 out of 5 stars Was very interested in her perspective
I followed this case from the begining, and was riveted.I always wondered what Sharon Rocha though and felt as she went through this horrible tragedy. While reading the book, I kept wanting the story to change, as if I didn't know the ending.I also kept shaking my head at the senslessness of Laci's murder.I learned details of the case I hadn't heard before, and a different perspective of some of the same things I'd read in other books, namely the disgusting behavior of the Peterson family. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and informative
An interesting story of a remarkable woman with unusual strength and deep insight into faith, Christ and christian living. Thus defenately worthreading. Yet the book left me spiritually hungry; I would have wanted tohear more Ruth's own voice, get closer to her and her way of figuringthings out. That would have also brought more warmth into the biography. Abook called "Coffee and conversation with Ruth Bell Graham and GigiTchividjian" fills that kind of needs better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ruth Graham: today's great role model!
A well written biography of one of the best examples of a Godly woman

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story of one of America's most famous wives
Ruth is a remarkable woman, with an interesting childhood, young adult and adult life story. She is a picture of a godly, submissive wife who is not a doormat....(something this world needs more examples of!)I recommend it, especially for young Christian women who are engaged or newly married. ... Editorial Review

As teenagers from a rough part of Newark, New Jersey, Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins had nothing special going for them except loving mothers (one of whom was a drug user) and above-average intelligence. Their first stroke of luck was testing into University High, one of Newark's three magnet high schools, and their second was finding each other. They were busy staying out of trouble (most of the time), and discovering the usual ways to skip class and do as little schoolwork as possible, when a recruitment presentation on Seton Hall University reignited George's childhood dream of becoming a dentist. The college was offering a tempting assistance package for minorities in its Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program. George convinced his two friends to go to college with him. They would help each other through. None of them would be allowed to drop out and be reabsorbed by the Newark streets.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pact... Packs some good information for young people and their parents
The Pact was a book that I was interested in reading for some time. My son (9 yrs old), and I decided that the best time to read the book would be before his bedtime. We would alternate reading different chapters. The Pact was an inspiring story that I believe anyone could relate too. It's about community support, friendship and perserverance. This generation needs to hear stories about what is possible, and this book delivers on that message. I strongly recommend it for youth groups everywhere. We need to teach our kids how to choose friends, and that friends can support and nurture each others dreams. Dream BIG!
5-0 out of 5 stars I will put this on my recommended list for students
One of my biggest challenges as an educator is building literacy. I know that the most successful students read outside of class, but I have a hard time finding books that manageable and interesting enough to grab the interest of the students that I work with in DC. I will recommend this book to my students because it helps make the choices of black students real in clear language. How do you successfully defer gratification for years and years to build a career? This book doesn't have definite answers but it does give an example that students can look up to. More programs like the Seton Hall program that helped bridge the transition to college are necessary for first-generation high school students. I also dug the fact that these three black men did not seem to be supermen in the way that Cedric Jennings was portrayed in "The Hope In the Unseen". Books like "The Pact" show that the best dreams are birthed by students in the presence of consistent mentoring. I hope that all urban mentors and educators will consider this book for motivational fuel.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great read...
I read about these three in some magazine (Essence?) while I was in a bookstore cafe. I went upstairs to browse the book and ended up buying it. I'm so glad that I went to that bookstore just to browse around or I would have never known anything about it.I'd heard of these three from another magazine I subscribe to but never really knew what their deal was.It was very interesting to read about three young men who grew up in the inner city projects of Newark, two of them exposed themselves to crime, all of their manhood was tested, and two went to jail/juvenile hall. But with all those pitfalls, each one of them had a personality that would not let each other fall down. One was an activist, the next was a serious hard worker, and the third an optimistic motivator who stayed out of trouble. These guys were so good for each other. It was interesting to read about their sides of the story in a conversational tone that showcases their down-to-Earth personalities, their mild secrets that the other two will enjoy reading, and even a couple love interests would probably be flattered too.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Rate Biography
I've always enjoyed Ava Gardner's screen performances and wanted to know more about her as a person. This biography was most informative and the best I've read about Ava, including warts and all.She was the most beautiful woman I've even seen and Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were merely also-rans in my estimation. She was generous and honest to a fault but most unlucky in love with her choices of men.Admittedly she was a flawed person and a product of her times and upbringing, but aren't we all?The author captured the very essence of this woman and after reading the biography I felt I knew this lovely lady.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and tragic (As expected)
This is a well researched and written biography. It's fun to hear about many other celebrities in a book about Ava.Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra, George C. Scott, Miles Davis, were all real people with a good side and bad side. She lived in a generation with Judy Garland, and suffered many of the same demons, except she was prettier than Judy.Partying and sex get a lot of them. But the book was still wonderful, and made Ava a glamorous, yet normal, human being.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great writer, vapid subject
Lee Server's biography of Robert Mitchum was a brilliant page-turning narrative of a fascinating, unique, and enigmatic movie icon. This book on Ava Gardner, however, is a disappointment, a poor choice of subject, and an ultimately tiresome account of a woman who had all the breaks and all the luck in the world and did nothing with them. It's a tiresome chronicle of her drinking and sexual excesses from which the reader learns little about life. It's really a sad, depressing portrait of a vapid actress who lived off her iconic beauty like a parasite. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stuck In Tehran: A Real Life Nighrtmare
Imagine this: You, your husband, Moody, and your daughter, Mahtob, are all going away to visit Moody's homeland of Tehran for two weeks. You are hesitant at first, but decide to go through with it for Mahtob's sake. When you arrive in Tehran, you are overwhelmed and surprised by Iranian way of life.As the two weeks come to an end, Moody tells you that you are not going back to America, seeing as how he has lost his job. When you confront him about this, he tells you that he is the man of the family and his decision is the final decision.Moody takes away your passport and sometimes locks you up in a room for days on end.You plan your escape but everytime there is a chance for you to able to flee, you are always told that you must leave Mahtob behind.Sounds horrific? This is what really happened to Betty Mahmoody in 1984.Although she is in a country where women have no rights whatsoever and Americans are hated, Betty never gives up hope that one day, she and Mahtob will be in America once again. This story was so captivating that I didn't want to put it down until I was through and when I was done, I still wanted more of it.It was also easy to follow and comprehend.I believe that this novel is a must-read for any woman looking for encouragement, motivation, or just a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars BETTY - HOPE IN A CHADOR
Betty is a woman of strength and her courageous struggle to flee her tormentor clearly emphasises this fact. The book is one of the most exhilirating books that one can read as it strongly highlights the unbrokenhuman spirit as well as faith and devotion to Jesus Christ.I believe thatthe experience that Betty as an individual undergoes gives hope to even themost pathetic souls. The fact that she and her daughter are conquerers intheir own right allows for us to look upon them with admiration andsatisfaction that prayers are always answered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A character actor pays homage to his famous movie star father
Actor Chris Lemmon, not as famous as his late movie star father Jack pays homage to the elder Lemmon in this book. The elder Lemmon has done quite a few films throughout his career with his late longtime friend Walter Matthau. Chris' mother divorced Jack when Chris was a toddler. Chris became a cast member of one of Fox's first sitcoms,Duet, which ran from April 1987 to August 1989. Duet was then spun off as Open House which ran for nearly a year. Chris' character Richard Phillips and his wife Linda, played by Alison LaPlaca, were respectively,a patio furniture salesman and an executive film producer. Richard quit the retail business and became a cocktail lounge pianist. On the spin-off Linda went into real estate. Post-Duet-OH,Chris has had a series of guest roles on various shows. Hundreds of people, including Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones,attended memorial services for Jack in 2001. Jack was 75 years old when he passed away. I dedicate this book to Jack's memory.

2-0 out of 5 stars well written but...
depressing as each chapter starts with a final illness segment.Without that it would have been a MUCH better and more enjoyable book.It may have been cathartic and healing for Chris, but not so for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book about "A coupl'a Lemmons."A legendary actor's son shares his memories

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Entertaining, and Well Written
I loved this book.It was educational and at the same time highly entertaining. There are several themes going on in the same book.First there is the actual review of restaurants and education of food and wine.Second, there is the truth about restaurants, food, and service that is exposed. Finally, there is the journey of the author and what she learns about herself, desires, and needs. All three themes are woven seemlessly to make a highly fun book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Ruth
I just read this book cover to cover on a flight back to NYC from Barcelona. My mouth watered as I read the included reprints of her past reviews of NYC restaurants - even after my five days of fantastic Spanish cuisine! But more surprisingly, I was drawn in by what seems to be quite an honest glimpse of the NYC restaurant experience seen through the eyes of many "characters".The book left me such respect for the depths that Ruth Reichl went through in order to dine as the everyday person would experience, especially in NYC's "best" restaurants. Her recounts made me actually appreciate the research and dedication required to write a truly objective (as objective as food tastes get, I suppose) review.A very easy and enjoyable read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Made me want to eat out more
Ruth's description of the lift of a restaurant critic was both a fascinating read and mouthwatering at the same time. Her descriptions of the disguises and deferring treatments in New York's finest restaurants made for a quick page turner. Her recipes and reviews scattered in each chapter made me bothwant to eat out more often and try to cook some of those dishes myself. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not A Enjoyable Book..
Like all of the other singers and musicians, Quincy Jones should stick with music. But i guesse if you can write music you can write a book. I just found it pretty boring. Quincy does awesome music though.
5-0 out of 5 stars Q is The Dude!!
What an amazing life!! Never again will I say 'I can't do it!' From eating rats, stealing, getting in fights, having a mentally ill mother and generally a hard childhood, Quincy Jones found freedom and flight in music, becoming the genius he is today.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most amazing stories ever told.
From eating rats to producing #1 hits and scoring movies, what a life! Quincy Jones is my idol.Never have I read (exception Ray Charles) an autobiography where so much adversity in a person's life did not kill their ambition or dreams.Q has accomplished so much in his life that it is an uplifting book.He really digs in deep into his personal life and shares a lot of his personal life.Thank you Q, for sharing your amazing story for us.Q's book is a must read for any musician, or entertainer, or anybody who wants to read a good book!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Read This Great Sea Story- LISTEN INSTEAD
I listened to the CD version of Simple Courage.Other reviewers have deducted marks for the book's length and author's personal narrative.None of that mars the audio version.LISTEN to the CD.It's been expertly abridged by Kristin Lesko into a tight, taut, compelling story.Frank Delaney is an absolutely OUTSTANDING reader/narrator (a long prior career at the BBC probably helped).I begrudged every moment it took to eject the finished CDs and spin up the new ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uses historical documents and modern accounts to spice true adventure.
Frank Delaney's SIMPLE COURAGE: A TRUE STORY OF PERIL ON THE SEA tells of a 1951 ship laden with passengers and tons of cargo heading from Europe to America which faced huge waves which about destroyed her. Her captain fought to bring her cargo and passengers safely to port: his courageous story is told on audio for the first time, and uses historical documents and modern accounts to spice true adventure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Captain Courageous
The world has not long remembered Captain Henrik Kurt Carlsen, but in 1952 he was deservedly one of the most famous men in the world, "The Man of the Year" according to Life magazine and plenty of other listmakers.Frank Delaney, an Irish writer, was nine years old at the time, and one of the connections he had with his difficult father while growing up in Ireland was sharing the world's fascination with Carlsen's peril at sea.Delaney remembers his father uncharacteristically summoning the family to the radio: "There is an incident happening at sea."An incident, indeed, and one that stuck with Delaney for years, finally flowering into the grand account _Simple Courage: A True Story of Peril on the Sea_ (Random House).Delaney's personal interest in the story, as part of his own family's lore, is told in episodes through the book, illustrating how all the world over people were waiting to hear of the fate of Carlsen as he clung to his sinking vessel, so it helps us understand what a sensation the story was at the time.Delaney's book brings the sensation back for our own time. 4-0 out of 5 stars Twain's "before and after" account of his quarter-century on the Old Muddy
Twain's account of his years on the Mississippi is part travel book, part memoir, and part historical work, with a few sketches, stories, and tall tales tossed in for good measure. There is even an outtake from the not-yet-published "Huckleberry Finn," along with extensive excerpts from historical and contemporary accounts by other authors. This smorgasbord of material makes for an uneven book, but much of it shows Mark Twain at his humorous and humanistic best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Narrative of Life on the River
Mark Twain (1835-1910) grew up along the banks of the Mississippi River, and he captures the feel of the mighty river during the steamboat era in this superb narrative and memoir.I particularly liked the earlier chapters, as Twain describes his youthful tutelage as an aspiring steamboat pilot in the years before the Civil War.Readers see what it was like guiding a steamboat over a river full of dangerous snags and sandbars - in clear daylight, through thick fog, and on moonless nights. The author then jumps ahead to his middle age - describing life along the river and in the South after the Civil War, and including politics, epidemics, and the supplanting of steamboats by railroads. The book's second half lacks a bit of the magic found earlier, but remains eminently readable and informative. This is a remarkable narrative by a great writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Twain at his best!
I've been reading a lot of classic literature recently, and I also recently saw the Mississippi River for the first time...so this book seemed liked the perfect one for me to read right now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bette Davis - An Engaging Tale AboutAbout An American Icon
Bette Davis is one of the Silver Screens Giants,a woman of enormous will power, determination, earthiness, sensitivity, ruthlessness, passion with a great great talent.
2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here!
I am surprised that the long list of acknowledgements did not include Dick Cavatte. I am only up to page 90, and already much of the book so far consists of Bette's interview with him from his show in the early '70's. If the reader was not aware, they would think that it was the author speaking to Bette, but it is the Cavatte chat show word for word. So far I am not very impressed, and I am glad that I got it from the library and did not buy it. To me the definitive biography is still Lawrence Quirk's "The Passionate Life of Bette Davis".

4-0 out of 5 stars In Her Own Words

5-0 out of 5 stars very interesting book!!!!!!
I just finished this book last night, and it is wonderful. Not only is it filled with intimate facts about all of the First Families, but it very interesting. It makes you realize that they were real people and did they're duties even if they despised them.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but not thrilling
A lot of the antecdotes in this book have been published elsewhere but the insights on how each of the more modern presidential families view the White House were interesting. In all, I would have borrowed this book from the library rather than purchase it. A nice read but not a book I will take off the shelf from time to time to review or share with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story You Don't Think About Very Much
Living a life in a family is difficult enough. Imagine having an argument with your spouse while the TV cameras are on. Imagine your kids report card being broadcast all over the world, worse imagine that you're that kid and it's your report card. Imagine being a kid, particularly a young one and hearing what the other side is saying about your dad. Imagine trying to go to grow up and have a relationship with someone of the other sex. Imagine being a girl, do you think anyone would ever get up the courage to ask you out? On the other hand, with the secret service around you wouldn't have to worry much about date rape. But you probably didn't get to try smoking pot.

5-0 out of 5 stars JPII's Call to Bishops and Their Flock in "Rise"
The cover of this remarkable book, published less than a year before Pope John Paul II's death, shows the Pontiff nearly hidden while looking up at Christ's cross. It reminds us again the man called "John Paul the Great" raised Christ even as the world raised him during his legendary papacy's final months.
5-0 out of 5 stars Continuing the Journey of a great man
This book follows up where Memory and Identity had left off, through the episcopacy of John Paul II up to his pontificate. Like all his writing it is beautiful. There were only a few passages where the style changed somewhat and it became more of a laundry list (and then I did this, after that I did that, then I did that) rather than a flowing narrative. Overall though this is a beautiful book. It's amazing to see so clearly how God acts in any given life. It is a useful reminder though, that just as freely and clearly as we can see his actions in the life of John Paul, so too must he be acting in our life, it may just be more difficult to see.

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure falls short
This would be a great book if written by any other person. But, relative to other books I've read that were written by other Popes, it fell short of my expectations - but, it certainly rates a sound 'good.'One might consider the other side of the 'John Paul Coin' - the liberal side- Albino Luciani or John Paul I - the valiant champion of basic human dignity for women, the handicapped. orphans, homosexuals, the remarried and others who are scorned in their everyday lives by doctrine.I would suggest a look at Lucien Gregoire's PAUPER WHO WOULD BE POPE - the only existing complete biography of John Paul I.Two good men - two very different sides of the coin. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars just a clip job
save your money/don't waste your time reading this book. not only is taraborrelli an atrocious writer, this book is only a clip job. he has no new sources except for a beverly hills hairdresser who's not really giving up any inside info on Liz as he's still doing her hair. he's lifted any anecdotes in this book from all the preceeding Liz books and it's torture to have read his writing. it's stupifying that he even gets published but it shows you that some publishers are desperate for any celebrity book on their list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Biography
I think this book was very good.I liked how the book began with the story of Elizabeth's mother and father and her intense relationship with her mother and how it made her into the actress she is today.I found the book very humorous and very sad at times. But all together I thought the book was informative and engaging.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even bother................
I've been a fan of Elizabeth Taylor's for almost longer than I can remember, and there isn't a book about her that I don't have, but this is one that even I could have done without.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
a book every one should read, It touches the heart. And what a wonderful woman.Gracia is truly a Godly woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real life but reads like a novel
This book reads like a novel.Even though I always knew how the story would end I kept hoping they would be resuced or escape.Gracia is very honest in this book. Some Christians might even think she should have trusted God more. But I see this book as a good lesson in real life through the eyes of a lady who is a genuaine Christian. The book will inspire you and teach you about evil and good. This book should encourage Christians and it will challenge those who are not Christians to seriously consider Christianity - not because of an arguemnt but because of a life well lived for her (and his) faith.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional rollercoaster ride through the jungle of the Philippines
This book allows you to relate and sympathize with two missionaries kidnapped while celebrating their anniversary at a small beach resort.
