5-0 out of 5 stars My Life
Bill Clinton writes a very interesting account of his life in an inviting conversational style. His story-telling approach easily draws the reader into the events of his life. I especially enjoyed the amount of time he spent discussing his childhood. He expresses the pain and isolation that he felt very well. He is a talented communicator and this comes through as he tells his story. The words flowed one after another and I was easily captivated by the details. This review actually refers to the audio CD unabridged version, Part I. However, after 21 CD's for Part I alone, I did become tired of all of the drawn-out explanations and wished I got the abridged version. Overall, it was a great book and I am going to also read Part 2. It provides insight and apology for the actions of our ex-president. He seems to have written it to make amends with those he offended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Clinton is brilliant !
Why did I decided to listen to an autobiography, I still don't know, autobiography's have never interested me before? However, Bill Clinton's autobiography, articulate and exceedingly detailed, was the exception.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
Well written, good book. Interesting to read his perspective on world events different from what I was seeing in the media. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Job - Excellent Biography of the Complete Person
I enjoyed the book and would buy it again. Having said that the book only rates 4 stars because the author spends too much time - in my opinion - on non baseball issues after Ted Williams had retired.
5-0 out of 5 stars New Insight On a Complex Individual
Growing up in the 1950's in a suburb of Boston, I was a huge Ted Williams fan. I had read Ed Linn's earlier book about Williams so I figured that Montville was simply going to rehash all the information of which I was already aware. That turned out to be a huge mistake as Montville got into a great deal of description of Willams's personal life off the ballfield. In fact, Williams is through as a ball player half way through the book. Williams was always portrayed as a war hero who willing went off to serve his country. Montville develops a more balanced approach, particularly with regard to the Korean war. Montville also sheds a great deal of light on Williams's three marriages and his relationship with a fourth woman whom Williams did not marry but probably understood Williams better than the three women he did marry.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great biography of a great man
This is one of the best biographies I've read in recent years (and I read a lot of biographies).Leigh Montville makes his subject come alive, and after reading this book, I feel like I know "The Kid" personally. This is not to say that the story is sugar-coated: Williams flaws and foibles are presented, along with the things that made him great.Ted Williams is shown as a man who was very self-centered, often immature, impulsive, bad-tempered and difficult to get along with (some of the detail around his 3 failed marriages is painful), but also a hero marine pilot who saw combat in 2 wars, a good friend to many, a generous person with both time and money (especially when it came to kids), and probably the greatest hitter in the history of major league baseball.I heartily recommend this book. Thanks Leigh!

5-0 out of 5 stars Along with "Parachute Infantry" a great first-hand account
This is another one of the "band of brothers" type narratives.Burget wasn't in E company, but was in the same battallion and went through the same training.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best WW2 narrative I have ever read in my life
A narrative of suspense, action, and horror set inside the mind of Donald Burgett as he struggled to become one of the members of the elite 101st Airborne Division and ultimately survive through World War II. Currahee is written such that one feels as if he is following the main character, Burgett, step by bloody step. This first person narration by the hardened war veteran, Burgett, adds a suspense and gritty realization to the horrors of war. Every chapter focuses around Burgett's adventures and deadly battles he encountered regularly. He describes in detail every action he took, and every shot he fired so that the reader can never miss a beat. He explains his training and how damn near impossible it was to become a paratrooper. The joke going around during his first day of boot camp in 1942 went, "If two doctors were on each side of you lookin' in your ears and could see each other, you were a new member of the 101st Airborne!" At only 18 years old, Burgett had the heart and mind of sure will and determination. He did whatever he had to do in order to pass the required training and receive his jump wings, qualifying him as one of the best in the army. I am convinced that Burgett and his entire generation who were tough enough to make it into the 101st became the most admirable "bunch of guys" this nation has ever had for now and generations to come. We, the people, of the United States of America owe them our solemn gratitude and utmost respect that they laid down their lives so that your children, and my children, might be able to live in freedom for years to come.

Editorial Review

This true story about the love between a spiritual mentor and his pupil has soared to the bestseller list for many reasons. For starters: it reminds us of the affection and gratitude that many of us still feel for the significant mentors of our past. It also plays out a fantasy many of us have entertained: what would it be like to look those people up again, tell them how much they meant to us, maybe even resume the mentorship? Plus, we meet Morrie Schwartz--a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf. And finally we are privy to intimate moments of Morrie's final days as he lies dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Kudos to author and acclaimed sports columnist Mitch Albom for telling this universally touching story with such grace and humility. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brought back feelings....
This book was definitely one of those works where you can identify with what they are going through, yet you still have something to learn. I am a cargiver for a lady who has a disease almost identical to that of ALS (Lou Gehrigs) and the symptoms he describes in this book are ones that I am facing everyday I work with her.
1-0 out of 5 stars Tuesdays At Morrie's, Fridays At The Bank
This book is not inspiring, it is unfortunate.Morrie sounded like a great man who knew how to live his life. However, it is unfortunate that media vultures like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Koppel, and the author (another Oprah-manufactured "celebrity" like Dr. Phil) took everything that was probably special about this man and trivialized his words, commercialized his life, and exploited him and his values purely for financial gain.Albom mentions that the advance money for the book paid for Morrie's medical bills...what about all the money after he died?Hmm...he kind of left that part out.Seems that Mitch didn't really learn that much about greed from his old professor after all, which makes him sort of a hypocrite. What could have been a very special book in the hands of a competent author, instead gets a 200-page shlock treatment, from a sixth-grade caliber sports-writer (who apparently can't write many words longer than two syllables) that is watered down so that the masses can swallow it without too much critical thought. If I'd have known this was one of "Oprah's Picks" I wouldn't have even bothered with it, but I have also heard so much praise for this book that I figured it was at least worth a read.It wasn't.It was not inspiring, it was trite, contrived, shallow, preachy, poorly written...which seems to be a trademark of all of Albom's books.Morrie, you deserved better and I hope you are resting peacefully.I suppose it is good that this book is at least inspiring people, but at the same time you have to wonder about the types of people who would be inspired by this simple-minded shlock.Anyone raised in any decent, civilized background probably knew all this stuff already.I think the only people on this earth who have a true sense of what Morrie was about are his surviving friends, family, cohorts and students.I felt no connection to Morrie with this tacky treatment of a powerful subject, which is very unfortunate.I agree with another review that said that if you want some really great, inspiring words, read the Bible, Koran, Torah, etc. and keep away from this tacky book.Heck, read Siddhartha, thats probably a much better choice.Mitch, your grade on this thesis is an "F -"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifetime with Morrie
As I sit down to write this review I find myself not looking into the book to see what I wrote in the margins, but trying to remember what I learned from the book.I once had a professor tell me "Shawn, you will never remember what the text tells you, but you will remember what the book taught you".This is one of those types of books and as you are reading it, you feel like you are a part of the story.Throughout the story Morrie tries to relay some of the lessons he has learned, and after reading the book I have realized that they are the most important kind of lessons: lessons on living life.I am not being vague about the content of this story in hopes of enticing you to read this, but I simply want you to sit down with this book without any expectations.Have a relationship with it and it will teach you amazing things. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Of course this book is a classic. It is Helen Keller in her own words. It is well written and interesting to be "there" as she developes and learns. If you haven't read the book yet, I recommend you do.I "read" the book as a book on tape. Email:boland7214@aol.

3-0 out of 5 stars Think about it , Helen was successful in life even though she was blind and deaf
Helen Keller was indeed blind and deaf. I liked this book because it tells you about so much things Helen overcame being blind, deaf and earlier on "dumb" ( bcause she was unable to speak). It makes you realize that you can do anything if you really want to no matter what your circumtance is. Also it teahces people to be content and accept the way or conditions that you are in.It's true when they say " it could have been worse".I read this book to do an essay and i think it was a good choice although it was a little challenging to really comprehend what Helen was always talking about. So if you want to learn more about Helen Keller this is a good good book to learn from.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing at times
This book is written by Hellen Keller, a blind and deaf woman, telling about her childhood and growing up. The book is filled with anecdotes. Each one is about a page or two long and has no connection with the one before it or the following one. The date can vary from year to year without much warning. I would not recommend this book to young readers. I am 14 and became quite confused at times. I had to read this book for school. There were some very nice points in the book, though. If you are a Hellen Keller fan, I would highly recommend this book. It is full of many things in her life that you would not know if you only read a biography or just watched one of the movies made of her life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From a avowed Yankee Hater
About 1 out of every 2 baseball biographies seems to be about a Yankee. As a Yankee Hater, I loath that. However, I was at the library and decided to try The Big Bam by Leigh Montville.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Update of Babe Ruth's Legend!
For those of us who grew up listening to baseball games on the radio rather than seeing them on television, this abridged audio is a real treat.Leigh Montville's dramatic story of the Sultan of Swat, the Bambino, the Big Bam, comes to life as Adam Grupper recounts both observed (the "called" home run) and recreated moments in this fine recording. After all, would you rather read about someone hitting the longest home run in a given ball park . . . or listen to a virtually breathless account of the same?I know which I would choose . . . every time!
5-0 out of 5 stars Brings the Bambino to life
When my daughter saw me reading this book she exclaimed, "Don't you know everything about Babe Ruth already?" Well, even if I thought I did, this book made me aware of how little I knew. I had read most of the previous biographies from Tom Meany's to Robert Creamer's. But Leigh Montville's book is the last word on Ruth. What an enormous amount of research he put in, yet he did not let the material overwhelm his subject. The Babe comes through in living color. I don't think any player has ever captured the imagination of the American public more or has been treated more shabbily by the sport he enhanced. I think one reason that Babe Ruth continues to be the gold standard to baseball fans is because, unlike the spoiled players of today who make millions of dollars a year and charge for an autograph, Babe loved being "Babe Ruth." He made appearances for kids, he autographed baseballs, he autographed $20 bills. He gave as much as he received both on and off the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a book to relate to
Michael's book is a fantastic account of his life leading up to and including his struggle with dealing with Parkinson's. As a person with a Parkinsonism who was diagnosed after Michael exposed his disease, I can say he truly made it easier for others to deal with this devastating blow. His hiding of the his disease is common of so many people who are diagnosed with PD at crucial points in their lives. An extremely good book about life rocky road, and for those with PD or any illness for that matter who are trying to create a somewhat normal existance for themselves and their families.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great story, very good read.
A friend gave this book to me. It was such a good read. I had no idea Michael was so sick, and had such a difficult life. While I did not respect ways he wasted his body by alcohol, drugs, and stupid habits before he found out, at a still very young age of mid-20s, about his Parkinson's disease, his remarkable change to a new man was a very good story. The anectodes from this book will stay with me, and it has a great message for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
I've been a fan of Michael J. Fox for many years and was sad to learn of his Parkinson's disease.I expected this book to be largely about the disease and Fox's coping with it.However, I was pleasantly surprised to read an honest account of all of the ways he had messed up his life before coming to terms with himself as well as with his disease.Although I don't like to read sad stories of drinking spinning out of control, Fox's matter-of-fact tone and willingness to take full responsibility for his actions was refreshing.I felt privileged to be allowed this glimpse into his life and his psyche, and I ended up liking him better after finishing the book than when I started. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad. But not great.
I imagine Rosie O'Donnell's fans would adore this book. She's honest and insightful, blending an incredible story of a long-distance friendship that isn't what it seems with her own painful memories of her childhood.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it
This book was a great read. It shows the realness in a celebrity. That her life had it's ups and downs just like everyone elses and the range of emotions that she experienced growing up... were just like you or I went through. You can really relate to her story in one way or another. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A candid memoir
As a lover of biographies this one was not about a person who achieved greatness through some great talent but was more a chronicle of the ups and downs of life in the house of Windsor. I think that red headed exuberant Sarah caught our attention twenty years ago when we watched her walk down the aisle with her prince and we all thought it was sort of neat that a real person was in this situation. I think that this is a lady who is VERY media savvy and knows how to market herself but there is still something rather refreshing at her forays into writing, her ability to fly a plane and her trek across the deserts of Quatar on horseback. I am not an unabashed fan but I was interested enough to read this book. It was enjoyable but also a little self absorbed. Like it's subject, a bit contradictory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fergie - hero or villain?
Unlike the previous reader, I really enjoyed this book and came away with real affection and admiration for the Duchess of York. Admittedly, certain things are left out, but that's probably as much to do with protecting others as about Sarah's own feelings. Let's face it, a no holds barred 'kiss and tell' story would hardly be dignified coming from a former Royal Duchess.
1-0 out of 5 stars TRY TELLING THE TRUTH FERGIE....

5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL MEMOIR AND TRIBUTE
This is a good work.As one disgruntled reviewer pointed out, this is not a history book, but rather a memoir and tribute from a son to his father and to one of the many heros of WWII.Having been raised by a father from that era, it is quite apparent to me that my relationship with my father was my no means isolated, but somewhat the norm. This work struck pretty close to home.Having spent over twenty years in the military myself, I can understand some of their thoughts, but even that cannot bridge the entire gap. Those guys looked at life differently than my generation. The author has approached the subject with great sensitivity and through his conversations with these men, I feel, has been able to understand not only them, but himself.I highly recommend this one to any father and any son.Well done Mr Greene.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tribute From a Son to His Father
Bob Greene has written a touching and emotion-filled book about two men who influenced the outcome of World War II; his own father and Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay.Greene's father served as an infantry soldier in Italy, while Tibbets was training his men in Wendover, Utah for a mission which would hopefully end the war.5-0 out of 5 stars A book about a hero and a father and how much are alike
A great book about a true hero and other's worthy of the same label. A very easy and engaging read. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The problem with most authorized biographies is just that--they'reauthorized. They praise, adore, defend, excuse, inspire, whitewash, and lovetheir subjects, which, in the end, conspires to keep the reader at a distance.Tracey Stewart's homage to her late husband Payne Stewart does all of that. Itrarely allows a closer view than that available from where she witnessed most ofhis stirring final round victory in the 1999 U.S. Open: on TV.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, I have ADHD and it kept my attention.
Hat's off to Tracey for her work in getting this together.Though lacking in specific details of his past behaivors enough is said to allow the reader to understand the change in his character once he accepted Christ. This book is not another Christian testimony. It contains the elements of a what makes a good man.We are all sinners and a perfect picture is not painted here.Payne was a great golfer and a great man that many could learn from. Then again, just act like you think Jesus would have and you will be close to the mark of Payne. Thank you for a great book Tracey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Payne Stewart, the best
I have recently finished the biography of payne stewart. It was one of the best books I have ever read. From start to finish of the book I was always interested. The best parts of the book is when it talks about all the tournaments he has been in and winning the U.S. open in 1999.

5-0 out of 5 stars Payne Stewart:The Authorized Biography---A HOLE IN ONE!!
What an inspirational book based on the life of Payne Stewart. You could literally feel the love that Tracey had for Payne. No, I am sure that Payne wasn't a saint.Who of us is?But, he was a great man, a great father, and a great golfer who is sadly missed by thousands of his fans and followers.Read more
