1-0 out of 5 stars Did Not Serve in WWII
While more than 400,000 of his peer group were killed (and another 786,301 wounded), he states that he missed out on WWII because he was in the "4F" category (i.e., physically unfit).
4-0 out of 5 stars A DOWN-HOME SCION
I have always enjoyed Merv Griffin and watched many of his TV shows. This autobiography tells about many of his achievements and a few failures.Merv's attitude is always on the bright side and I believe that iswhy he is so successful.Bravery and risk taking is part of the mix, but relationships are his strong points and he has many interesting stories to tell.A fun read.

3-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TALES AND CHATTER ... UNTIL THE LAST CHAPTER
Like the man who "wrote" it (he had help from co-author David Bender), Merv Griffin's "Making the Good Life Last" is an entertaining, conversational confection chockfull of stories and anecdotes about his life in show business. This book is, in many ways, a sequel to Merv's best-selling autobioraphy of a couple of decades ago. "Good Life" picks up when that tome left off, with Merv reinventing himself as a businessman and, eventually, as one of the world's richest men. There are great Tallulah tales, and delightful stories about Al Pacino, Vanna White, Orson Welles, Clint Eastwood, Cary Grant, Lucille Ball, Eva Gabor, Nancy and Ron, Donald Trump, Ted Koppel and Errol Flynn ... who Merv met while the actor was nude. "Now how shall I put this?" Merv muses. "I think it's fair to say that Flynn brandished a sword both on and off the screen." It's all warm and witty and cozy chatter from someone who feels like a friend. Until the last chapter. There, Merv starts to spout off about how much money he has ... not in dollar amounts, but in boastful brags. There's too much talk about buying jets, yachts, hotels and casinos, of building this house and that house (with "house" sometimes meaning "ranch" or "compound"), of having marble and tile imported from across the world, of collecting horses and priceless art works by French Impressionists and Colorists, of having an associate deposit a check for $273 million ("the interest alone was $50,000 a day"), when most senior citizens at the same bank that day were depositing their monthly Social Security check for "$400 or $500 at most." This is when Merv needs to be tuned out and turned off. "Making the Good Life Last" is good ...until the last drop. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars too much fbi
they can take down big paulie but they can't save our crumbling country from their treasonous higher-ups. when i buy a mafia book i prefer to read about the mafia, not about the boring ass cops. its like 75% feds, 25% mob. don't read unless you're interested in the fbi. its not a true mafia book

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for non- fiction
Boss of Bosses was not a book I would have normally chosen to read for pleasure. I was assigned to read this book through school and I was pleasantly surprised. As all books that have to establish a timeline do, this book started out really slow. By the time I reached midpoint, I was deeply engrossed in the reading. If you are into non-fiction law enforcement books, this is a highly recommeded read. If your not, it is still a decent book to sit down with.

4-0 out of 5 stars The fall and murder of Godfather Paul Castellano.
This is a great read, and the only reason why I gave it a four star is because the authors seem to sympathize with Casellano.Castellano was the head of one crime family of five in New York. They specialized in corruption and punishment of those who didn't let them get their way. When Paul talks of clipping people, he means he will have someone murder them.Should we have sympathy for someone who has clipped others, being clipped himself.Or for that matter, the man who busted up people with a baseball bat getting six slugs in him.I think not. These guys got what they deserved. The only bad thing is the Gambino crime family fell into the hands of John Gotti and his son. They were bigger hoods than Castellano.

5-0 out of 5 stars A passionate, intimate memoir
Ten years ago Shulman went to her family's primitive cabin on Long Island, Maine, for a summer of solitude. A New Yorker through and through, she was apprehensive and fearful, but also excited and determined. Her life was vaguely dissatisfying and she was looking for a change.4-0 out of 5 stars Stay with it
I must confess I almost couldn't get through "Drinking the Rain". Kates Shulman's account of a citified feminist's return to nature seemed an unintential parody, not helped by the comically overstated title. But midway through Ms. Shulman's story I became hooked. What seemed at first a pretentious and self-important rant transformed into a thoughtful and evocotive musing on what it is to be an artist. Ironically, it's only after Shulman returned to the city (and later goes to teach in Colorado) that the book came alive for me. Her descriptions of dinner with an old feminist friend left me teary eyed at their simple eloquence, and the descriptions of a snowy Colorado reunion with her kids kept me reading. By the end, I adored this story.

4-0 out of 5 stars drinking the inspiration
Shulman raises many provocative ideas in her memoir.Among the ones thataffected me most profoundly are Solitude, Rebirth, Self-Sufficiency, andthe utilization of the resources in your own environment. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read prescription..
...from a very wise doctor.Gathering readers around her kitchen table, Dr. Remen takes an indirect but inspiring approach to those of us who sometimes prefer to avoid the doctor's office.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational
I read this book shortly after my daughter was born 14 weeks (approx. 100 days) premature last April. The stories Dr. Remen recounts in her books were very inspirational and helped my husband and me to be there for our daughter during her 3 month stay in the NICU. I found it hard, on some days, to cope with my daughter's condition as it rollercoastered from not so bad to absolutely horrifying and reading the stories really helped put perspective in what we were going through. I honestly don't think I would've survived being a NICU mom without having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Those Searching for Something
I really enjoyed this book and first read it in 1999 when I was having my "quarter life" crisis. After having two babies back to back and mourning my loss of identity, I found myself re-reading the book. The stories still comforted me and were still relevant 6 years later. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When Michael Dorris, 26, single, working on his doctorate, and part Indian himself, applied to adopt an Indian child, his request was speedily granted. He knew that his new three-year-old son, Adam, was badly developmentally disabled; but he believed in the power of nurture and love. This is the heartrending story, full of compassion and rage, of how his son grew up mentally retarded, a victim of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome whom no amount of love could make whole. The volume includes a short account of his own life by the 20-year-old Adam, and a foreword by Dorris' wife, the writer Louise Erdrich. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars People Who Work With Kids Need to Read This
This memoir/ public health history is engaging, disturbing and educational. It touched on many things to which I can relate...having a degree in anthropology (as the author does), being a former social worker and currently in school to become Special Ed. teacher I want to give this book to everyone I know who doesn't live in my world and see these things happening around them and to those who do live in my world so we can start a discussion about how to combat this tragedy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book to change your world
I consider this one of the most important books I've ever read (and like you, I've read A LOT of books). It's one of the few books you pick up in a lifetime that change how you see the world.Along with "Plagues and Peoples" and "Guns, Germs and Steel," it's in my permanent Top Three for non-fiction books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coping with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Michael Dorris, a single 26 year old professor of Native American Studies at Dartmouth, decided he wanted to adopt a child by himself, he didn't really know what he was getting himself into in The Broken Cord by Michael Dorris, a book that should be highly recommended to any reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing
Having been a lifelong Cowboys fan I saw this book and had to read it. The first thing I found upon reading it was that total honesty of Coach Landry and the guts it took to wither all the storms life can throw at one person.I found that, even though it deals worth football, there are lessons thatare applicable to everyday life. This would be a great book for all schoolchildren to be assigned to read. It shows what can happen when one personputs faith and families and principles ahead of instant gradification. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of wildland safety
Living in Montana and being a a Wildland firefighter as well. This book shows the true speed, power and ultimately the violence that a full blown fire can build to. The men that died in Mann Gulch created in death the first vestiges of the high level of training and safety we now all use when in similar situations. Along with fire on the mountain, required reading if you want to see as fire as we do!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Blowhard
The book is way to long it could be 200 pages. Maclean babbles on for paragraphs about something that could be said in a paragraph or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute
Norman Maclean was born to write this book. As an outdoorsman, a wildland firefighter of the same generation as the books subjects and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Norman Maclean's voice becomes the ideal homage to the hero's of Mann Gulch. While fans of Maclean's fiction might miss some of the poetry of his previous works, they will visit a new side of the author in this work as he pieces together the puzzle of Mann Gulch and makes peace with his own personal ghosts. Here the author, in his words, seeks to let the "tragedy become a story". The tragedy is told in detail, both honestly and reverently. Maclean labors to remain dispassionate and honest, to, "not become to sentimental". The tragedy he relates is horrible, the story of the tragedy is beautiful. It is a fitting tribute to the crosses of Mann Gulch and the memories of those who died there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Communicator
Ronald Reagan's love amd devotion for Nancy was so beautiful. It was amazing that he felt that way.His ability to communicate the depth of this emotion was breath-taking.Iown this book as a reminder that this kind of love is possible .

4-0 out of 5 stars Even a guy can enjoy this book
As a guy I was hoping this book was more then just mushy old love notes from Ronnie to Nancy and it was.I'm a great admirer of the man and got this book to see a side we didn't normally get to see and a glimpse into their past as a couple.I'm so glad Mrs. Reagan kept all these things and shared them.Reading this is a good reminder to all men how easy it is to take a minute to let the one you love know that they're in your thoughts and how much they've contributed to who you are, even if you happen to be the president of the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Was More of a Daughter to Ronnie than Patty or Ron...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Well-lived Life
Tony Hillerman writes Navajo and Zuni detective stories and does quite well at it.I've read several and enjoyed them for both the plots and the Indian culture that the reader is taught as he reads the books.I naturally thought that Hillerman was Navajo - he's not. He's a white man. But, he is a Sooner, graduated from the University of Oklahoma (Go Sooners!!!) and he's a veteran of combat during WWII, injured, and was a journalist for many years. His life is fascinating and he tells it well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 20th Century Life
Hillerman lived a rich but complex life which covered the most imprortant events of the 20th century. An Okie, raised in the depression, he fought in WWII as a boy and went on to a stellar career in reporting. He was raised with and loves the Indian people which enabled him to understand their culture and write so effectively about it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tony Hillerman, Seldom Disappointed (2001)
Tony Hillerman is a great author, and a man has the right to write his autobiography any way he chooses. That having been said, there are some disappointments in store for potential readers, most of whom will be perusing the book for insights into Hillerman's creative mindset. Hillerman does an excellent job of describing his childhood in Oklahoma, his World War II experiences, and his subsequent life as a college student and journalist. It is only about two thirds of the way through the book (at p. 251), however, that he seriously begins addressing the fiction which has made him famous. Furthermore, as Hillerman himself notes (see p. 321), only six books are discussed in any depth in the text: The Blessing Way (at pp. 266-73), The Fly on the Wall (at pp. 274-82), Dance Hall of the Dead (at pp. 283-88), The People of Darkness (at pp.294-98), Hunting Badger (at pp. 300-10), and Finding Moon (at pp. 311-17). All the others are discussed in more depth in an addition (at pp. 321-31), which to me was the most interesting part of the book. Why they were not treated in more depth at appropriate places in the text is never explained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great thing to read!
It was a year of Fire and also the year of Grace for Jackie Robinson!! It is an amazing book to read about a great person who changed history and loves baseball!! It is more than just baseball and it has so many things to show that shaped Jackie's life so much. It is also spiritual and emotional book that leaves you to become a stronger person to make a great difference in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jackie Robinson
I really liked this book and normally I dont like reading. Ijust wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. I think Jackie Robinson is a vary good romodel because no matter what, you should never give up. Because Jackie never gave up he ended up being one of the best baseball players to ever play the game. But most of all he broke the color code for all professional sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Read
This biography does an outstanding job of giving an overview of Robinson's life and times, from his early, awnry but talented years in Pasadena, through UCLA, then the military, and then the Brooklyn Dodgers and beyond. It paints a picture of a strong willed gentleman with enormous pride, dedicated to his family, and dedicated to the idea of racial integration and equality. The influences of his mother on his early, somewhat (understandably) confrontational character, that allowed him to ultimately be the individual who paired with Branch Rickey to integrate "America's Pastime" are clearly laid out.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read
I found this book fascinating from cover to cover. The glimpse into the world of MGM at its grandest is wonderful, and Esther herself is never dull. A page turner for movie fans. I agree with other reviews that Esther can come off badly in her "Do you know who I am?" attitude--it reads like she got really full of herself somewhere down the road. Plus, what kind of person stays married to a man who won't allow you to have a relationship with your own children? Sorry--there's no excuse. But this is a review of the book itself, not of the person, and it's a good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ultimately a Dissapointment
I started out in admiration of how tough Esther Williams was. But I kept waiting for her to start having a decent personal life. At first, I thought how sad it was that people were unfeeling and cruel with her. (How is it that every single man she meets, btw, with a few barely mentioned exceptions, arecold, heartless and entirely self-absorbed? An LA thing?) But by the time she started having affairs of her own and marrying the domineering Lamas (she knew what she was getting herself into) I lost all respect or sympathy for her. Even so, I can't help liking her somehow and wishing things had been different. She seems like a friend that lets you down and yet you still want to like her.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Swimmer Who Could Put On A Good Show.
She's classed with Betty Grable, Jane Powell, and Doris Day, though for the life of me, I am not sure why. They were all active out in Hollywood about the same time.Betty was the pinup of choice in WWII.Doris Day was everybody's favorite songbird, though her acting was less than desirable.Jane Powell was the girl next door. And they were all blondes (Hollywood blondes, for sure -- out of a bottle, as was Norma Baker who became Marilyn Monroe, the biggest phoney.) while the swimming movie star was a brunette.

The book can give inspiration on how our President runs the country by the guidance of God. Following God's guidances doesn't need to be popular and he knows this. The most important thing is to do everything as what the Bible says. It's true that no one is perfect, not even ourselves. We are not supposed to judge him as we do not want to be judged either. Let God Himself judge him as He will judge all of us.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
...I was surprised at how dated some of his 'contemporary style' writing has become. I used to read and enjoy his column in the NY Times every Sunday.I realize the man is from an older generation (most of the book takes place in the 50's, when he was in his late twenties); many of his phrases and patterns of speech reflect that 'gee-whiz-bang' time. Unfortunately, no one says 'Gee-whiz-bang' anymore. Baker also tends to repeat himself a bit, and his name-by-name tribute to every good (and bad) newspaperman he could think of won't mean much to the layman.4-0 out of 5 stars A great story showing the struggles of a young reporter
I was forced to read this book for one of my journalism classes and I had the 'typical' student attitude: 'I will skim through this book and guess my way through the paper'.I decided to read the first and last chapters ofthe book to get a basic understanding and then skim the rest.I startedthe book and realized that I could not put it down. This language in thisbook was very natural and the stories that were told were interesting. Being a journalism student, I was fasinated seeing all of the hardshipsthat Baker went through to become the famed reporter that he is today.Foronce an assigned book that was actually interesting and worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars The sequel to "Growing Up" doesn't disappoint
While I was "forced" to read "Growing Up"--part one of Russell Baker's autobiography--by my high school English teacher, I anxiously sought out this sequel. Baker's descriptions of theeveryday life of a reporter makes for an intriguing book. While he has atendency to romanticize situations, Baker provides enough details to give aclear picture of the type of challenges that reporters constantly face, especially early on in their careers. Baker's writing style is cleanand straightforward without being simple.(I would zip through 20-30 pagesat one sitting without even realizingit.) This is one of the fewbooks I've read more than once and boy, do I wish he'd write another"chapter" of his autobiography. If you like the so called"adventures" of a reporter, an effortless history lesson, andlots of behind-the-scenes stuff, buy this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Allen and Burns Show
I glanced at the reviews here to see if my opinion of this book was just a fluke, but they pretty much bear me out. I didn't expect this book to be nearly as good as it is. On second thought, though, it's not that surprising. This pair was magic and it was seen in everything they touched, the prime and lasting example being the without parallel Burns and Allen Show.
5-0 out of 5 stars Say Goodnight, Gracie
George Burns published this wonderful tribute to his wife when he was ninety-two years old, still head over heels in love with his dear Gracie, who died thirty years earlier. This book is a memoir of their personal and professional life together starting as the toast of vaudeville, continuing with their radio show for seventeen years, and later, situation comedy stars on television. Both George and Gracie started appearing on stage as children, and they teamed up in 1923, earning five dollars a week, doing four shows a day.At first, Gracie was the straight man and George said the punch lines, but they soon learned it was better the other way around.Gracie played the ditzy girlfriend and wife for thirty-five years and, as George said, he just stood next to her.He never stopped being amazed at her talent, beauty, and intelligence, and he loved her more with each passing day.The book ends with her death, from heart disease in 1958, and one is left with a lovely and intimate picture of their marriage.5-0 out of 5 stars You'll laugh until you cry
The first and last pages of this book will hit you really hard. In between, you'll laugh harder than you've ever laughed. I was 2 when Gracie died. I have no recollection of her, and hadn't seen/heard much that she did. My aunt loaned me her copy, and I read it. When I finished, I felt I lost someone dear to me. The story is told that well. It could not have been written any better. I now own it, and have read it five times! I recommend it to anyone and everyone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick Review
1.Biggest problem with this book.Even for a short book the book is too long.It has too much information you don't want to know, and too little you do want to know.
1-0 out of 5 stars What a dissappointment.
This book reads like a civics lesson for 7th graders.Atmosphere, texture and character development are pushed aside by oversimplifications and cliches (Freeh is described as "square-jawed").Juxtaposing Hanssen's story with Freeh's story is an amateurish device.Attempts at a psychological understanding of Hanssen lack depth, and ultimately collapse into pop psychology. In Hanssen's treachery there is an exciting, complex story to be told, but this book fails to do it justice.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Director and a Secret Spy.
I think this is a nice read about the lives of two people in the F.B.I..One is the Director Louis Freeh and the other is Robert Hanssen who sold his country away.As some of the previous reviewers state, there are some small errors in this book (the Daley machine), but much of it gives a picture of two very different people. Both were smart, had six children, and were very religious Catholics. But both were very different.Robert Hanssen did incredible damage to U.S. security by what he sold the Russians, while Louis Freeh tried to make the F.B.I. a more effective counter terrorism machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars LSMFT
Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco, I have heard Joan Benny on various radio programs over the years and she truly was blessed to have Mr. Benny as a father. Unlike many of the Mommy & Daddy dearest books written by the children of celebrities this books tells of an enchanted childhood growing up in Hollywood's golden age, Many of Mr. Benny's insights on his contemporaries like Fred Allen & George Burns as well as his defense that the Rochester character was NOT explotive of African Americans are insightful. Eddie "Rochester" Anderson was one of the highest paid comedians of his generation and owned a large house with servants, numerous automobiles, & large chunks of California real estate. Eddie and Jack were great friends for many years and Eddie was very broken up at Jack's funeral. The numerous radio interviews Joan Benny did on Larry King and several other stations are usually found on Jack Benny radio show collection CDs sold on Ebay & elsewhere and make for a wonderful companion for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light, fun read
Don't expect some exhaustive book on Benny (like the recent mega-biography of Bing Crosby) and you won't be disappointed. This book consists of light, amusing anecdotes - show biz fluff and recollections. It is great fun for Jack Benny fans and can be consumed in one afternoon. Enjoyable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Would Have Been Five Stars for the AutoBiography
Jack Benny wrote an autobiography entitled: "I Always Had Shoes."Though complete, it was never published, and when Jack's daughter Joan found it she decided to take excerpts from it and publish it with her own reflections on growing up in the Benny household.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man of God / Knight of Columbus
This is a fine biography of a fine man, founder of a major Catholic institution. One only wishes that there was more information about the man in the "collar."
3-0 out of 5 stars Truly a "Servant of God"
"The Parish Priest" is a narrative on the life of Father Michael McGivney, who founded the Knights of Columbus. This is a book for those interested in the founding and growth of the Knights from one council to thousands today, and 19th Century Catholicism in the northeast U.S.
