5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book For Gene Simmons Fans
I bought this book because I am a huge Gene Simmons fan and was hoping to gain some interesting insight into the man through Shannon's experiences of being with him for over 20 years. I was not disappointed. I found out some really neat details of Gene's life 'behind the mask' but I also really gained an appreciation for all that Shannon has gone through and how her wonderful spirit has kept her afloat through life's many hills and valleys. This is one of those books that you just can't put down and it goes really fast, in a good way; a definite 'page-turner'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but not just for women
This is an easy read, I read it in 4 hours. Well written and packed with heartwarming true story of Shannon's life. She's not afraid to tell you details of some deep personal experiences. From childhood to life with Gene Simmons is never boring. She's a strong women who stand tall, never falling like most Playboy playmates. She and Gene blend perfect for a wonderful lasting relationship. She loves Gene and her children, yet lives her life putting shame to other women who torment their partners. Wonderful color photos in the book, not only for the women, but men too. You don't want to let this pass by, it's a great read for all. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of the most recognizable women of our time, America knows Jane Fonda as actress, activist, feminist, wife, and workout guru. In her extraordinary memoir, Fonda divides her life into three acts: her childhood, early films, and first marriage make up act one; her growing career in film, marriage to Ted Turner, and involvement in the Vietnam War belong to act two; and the third act belongs to the future, in which she hopes to "begin living consciously," and inspire others who can learn from her experiences. Fonda reveals intimate details and universal truths that she hopes "can provide a lens through which others can see their lives and how they can live them a little differently."

4-0 out of 5 stars Gutsy...
While never a Jane Fonda fan, I lived in Fayetteville, NC during the Viet Nam era and remember well the evening that Ms. Fonda was in town.If they could, the hawks would have strung her up that night!I have to admit (with extreme embarrassment) that I did not have nearly the courage that she had in standing up AGAINST the war.Essentially this is the reason why I wanted to read her autobiography -- to hear HER side of the story vs some biased take from yet another angry hater of Jane Fonda.I'm glad I took the time to read a very readable book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Growing and Changing
Like many of us, Jane Fonda has spent a large portion of her life trying to figure out her life. She writes honestly about her past, most personal experiences - the happy times and the not so happy times, the good and the not so good, the intimate and the more intimate. Through her writing she openly shares her family, her friendships, and her marriages.
5-0 out of 5 stars intriguing story
I really enjoyed this book.Fonda tells an honest story of someone who is human and not afraid to admit imperfections.I found her candor to be refreshing.I found her strength to move forward to be inspiring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite klosterman
i absolutely adore this book! it has amazing quotes that just struck me. it's not so much about the artists that died-that was for the magazine he was writing for, this was about his journey, thoughts, and happenings on the way. it's an awesome book, and it actually makes you think, which is a beautiful thing today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Killing Yourself To Live
Briefly: I enjoyed this book.I enjoyed the writing.I enjoyed the references to musicians and other cultural icons.I disagreed with many, if not most of his assertions about the the value of certain kinds of music and musicians, but I enjoyed reading them nonetheless.I didn't mind the fact that much of it was an examination of his own relationships with women. If that's what he wants to write about, fine.I think he had interesting things to say about those relationships and I enjoyed reading them.I kind of feel as though I learn something about myself when I hear about how other people deal with relationship issues like this.I think the people who have written negative reviews were basing them less on what the book is than on what it's not.Anyone considering buying this book should be aware that it is not about music history. It's a funny (IMO) book about one particular guy's views on music, pop culture and his girlfrieds.I liked it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's probably more like 65% of a True Story
Killing Yourself to Live is confusing, if you take a literal approach to the book. And that I think, is where this book suffers. I too was very interested and excited to read about the the places at where some of the legends of rocks faded away forever. Lennon, Cobain, Ronnie Van Zandt, Elvis, etc. Somehow the death of these people as well as others remain in the American psyche as most of them created memorable and poignant songs of their generations. In many ways, this book to me, was a final closure to these singers and songwriters as I needed to know where their final goodbyes were, for better or for worse. Unfortunately, this book never took me there. In fact, I felt as if I was reading Klosterman's diary more than an hommage on American musicians. And that to me was not very exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Man
A powerful and reflective telling of what it means to live, not in the dualistic world of black and white, but in the reality of many shades of gray.Paul Rusesabagina was able to find and draw out the good that he knew to be in each person, offering even the most despicably behaving individual an opportunity to see beyond themselves. The Rwandan genocide is described in a broad historical and cultural context, including the role that the United States and Europe played in it.The shameful lack of response from the world powers speaks for itself and highlights even more clearly the courage, faith and power of individuals. The book provides a window into the family and community life in this country and reminds us of the influence that our choice of words and actions has. This would also be an excellent choice for a book club, HS or college course and is hightly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read, even if you've read other books on the subject & seen "Hotel Rwanda"
Because I'd done all mentioned in my review title, I opted to borrow rather than purchase this book on the assumption that what few new tidbits I'd learn really wouldn't merit the expense. How wrong I was. Can't count the number of times I wished the book were mine so I could underline one of Mr. Ruseabagina'smemorable ways of seeing the situation and people in it.In explaining why he maintained contact with an old friend who became the vice-president of the group leading the massacre, for example, Ruseabagina wrote, "People are never completely good or completely evil. And in order to fight evil, you sometimes have to keep evil people in your orbit.Even the worst of them have their soft side, and if you can find and play with that part of them, you can accomplish a great deal of good.In an era of extremism, you can never afford to be an extremist yourself."The absence of braggadocio in this passage is characteristic of Ruseabagina and the story he tells, something else that is pretty astonishing, given what he did. I also thought he did a masterful job of explaining the history of Rwanda that led to the genocide. Finally, his description of his childhood home in a beautiful land is quite poetic. In sum, so well-written, informative and thought-provoking was the book that I'm buying a copy, rereading it and underlining the many things I truly do not want to forget.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not easy being a twin...
Sibling relationships can be very difficult - especially close ones. Not being a twin, I can't relate to the whole "twin" thing, but I can relate to loving, hating and competing with my sister - all at the same time. What I love about this book is that it is so clear about portraying humanity - gifts and flaws at the same time. While Tim is a gifted writer and I loved reading his letters, it's easy to see how he would have driven Kim insane. I disagree with the previous reviewer re: the letters - I thought they were one of the best parts of the book. I agree that there are a couple of slow spots, but I really really liked the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully emotional roller coaster of brotherly love and responsibility
As the story begins, Kim Powers receives a call from the boss of his twin brother Tim, reporting that he has not reported to work and appears to be missing. After dealing with such instances most of his life, Kim at 28 is tiring of his role as big brother (he is five minutes older) and caretaker to his identical twin, who suffers from bouts of chronic depression and tends to substance abuse and suicide attempts.

Editorial Review

Just about every other person in the world seems like an unfocused dilettante compared to long-distance swimming legend Lynne Cox. Soon At the age of 14, after several years of training hard in pools and the open sea, she was swimming the 26 mile stretch from Catalina Island to the coast of California. A year after that, she surpassed a lifelong goal by not only swimming the English Channel but setting a new men's and women's record in the process. Rather than be satisfied, Cox aimed still higher, conquering the Cook Strait in New Zealand, the Strait of Magellan and, the Cape of Good Hope, none of which had been swum before. Being the first to swim the Bering Sea from Alaska to what was then the Soviet Union is perhaps Cox's most impressive achievement, requiring a phenomenal amount of physical strength and endurance to withstand the chilly waters and diplomatic persistence to gain permission from Gorbachev during the Cold War. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Lynne Cox is very brave and her determination to succeed in every aspect of her life was very inspiring. She proves that when you have a passion for something and are willing to work for it, then nothing is out of reach.I really enjoyed this book not just because of that, but also because Lynn proves that she is just as skilled of a writer as she is a swimmer! She captures and holds your attention right to the end, describing in detail her life as a long-distance swimmer. The best way that I can explain it is that it was so good it was almost like reading fiction, if that makes sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars more than just an interesting story
The story of Lynne Cox is one that we should all know about. It is nothing short of amazing what she did and how she impacted our move away from "cold" relations with the Soviets. The book is well written, easy to read and just plain interesting. But if there is one most impactful element of the book it is the underlying message that through focus one can accomplish anything.A great message for all of us to internalize

3-0 out of 5 stars Swimming to Entropy
Lynne Cox is a swimmer, but not the type you think of at the beach or the pool. She is a long distance swimmer, and a specialist in swimming in cold water.

3-0 out of 5 stars entertaining but the conclusions are suspect
I enjoyed the book, except when the philosophy major came out. Her conclusions about the secret life of men are silly from the point of view of a lifelong male. However, the story if fun to read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Tepid
While there was some useful information, this book appeared to be an effort to prove Ms. Vencent's prejudices, rather than the voyge of discovery that it could have been. The author seemed to be searching for the very worst in men, and of course, she found it.The fact that she would join a men's bowling league, when she couldn't bowl was simply amazing.I don't think a man (or most women) would ever consider doing such a thing. In addition to the lack of substance, I feel the book was written in a very unengaging and simplistic style. Overall, it was one of the few books I have bought over the years that I don't believe was worth the money. If you must buy this book, find a used one, or better yet, get it from the library. If I ever see another book written by Ms. Vincent, I will pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, honest and painful
One of the best books I've read in decades. This woman writes like a lyricist, digs like an anthropologist and observes like a scientist. She immerses herself in a shockingly foreign world, one we women didn't know existed. Our suspicions about what it's like to be male in America are completely right... and heartbreakingly wrong. 4-0 out of 5 stars ALL SHE EVER NEEDED WAS THE MUSIC
All she's ever needed was the music and the mirror and the chance to dance for you . . . Musical theatre fans will always recognize the last lines of the 11 o'clock number from A Chorus Line. The show, returning to Broadway this month in it's first revival since it closed there after 6,137 performances in 1990, starred Donna McKechnie. In her autobio, co-authored by Greg Lawrence, who wrote Dancing with Demons, the definitive bio of Jerome Robbins, there is much to like. The book, however, is not without a few jarringly uncomfortable moments.
5-0 out of 5 stars one opinion from Italy
a true indispensable treasure of information for a lover ofamerican musical shows.
5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.
This is a wonderful read.Broadway and musical fans will be thrilled to hear the insider stories, but also saddened that a woman as talented and driven as Donna McKechnie never became a household name.Unflinchingly honest, almost painful at times.I practically inhaled the book and I recommend it highly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst writing I've read in a long time
You decide for yourself what you think about Mortenson.I think the subtitle of the book should be "How One Man Became a Dhimmi."
5-0 out of 5 stars Put so simply...
No doubt this story seemed like an inspiring one. The question for me was, could the writer do a good job conveying it? The answer is- yes!! There are no words to describe how this story made me feel. I was moved to tears more than once. It's about time that we had something to read or listen to that speaks to the humanity of the majority of Muslims. Until now it seemed like we were given no option but to lump them all into the "fanatic" category. There was no one to speak up for the rest of the population. The story of the poor village women of Pakistan giving eggs to Greg to honor 9/11 widows was heart-wrenching. The speech by a supreme Shia ruler to a local village after 9/11 was equally gut-wrenching. Thank you to Greg Mortenson for shining a light on the region. His work building schools by working WITH tribal people of Afghanistan and Pakistan is incredibly brave. The effort taken to learn the local languages and customs is phenomenal. Thank you David Oliver Relin for bringing the story to us and for providing so much background information to help round out the story! This book helped fill so many holes in my understanding of the region. What the heck are the Taliban? Why can't Islamabad just take control of its northern region? What drives many people to choose death via "jihad" over life? I am inspired to read and understand even more about the fascinating people of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is America more secure than on 9/11?
Besides being an exciting and courageous mission story, Three Cups of Tea is an effective alternative to Bush's so-called "compassionate conservatism" and "war on terror".

One would not anticipate a conventional memoir from Bob Dylan--indeed, one would not have foreseen an autobiography at all from the pen of the notoriously private legend. What Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended, but With Several Reservations
I have always been a huge fan of Bob Dylan's music, and am now probably a bigger fan than ever. As I listen to his older music, some of it for the first time, and compare it to the tripe from other acts that record companies "manufacture" these days, Dylan's music is a true treasure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tangled up ...
I had always wondered about the gal on the cover of Dylan's second album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan." I had read elsewhere that she was Dylan's girlfriend soon after arriving in NYC. Reading "Chronicles I," you getDylan's take on Suze Rotolo, the girl on the cover, and her role in his life. Dylan gives you a small sense of her as a love interest, a muse, a girl of the sixties. More importantly, Chronicles offers a jumbled, messy, non-chronological, but insightful view of Dylan's life, the trappings of fame, and his attempts to recoil from expectations by the adoring fans. The chapters detailing his earlier periods seem more interesting probably because of our greater familiarity with the music he released then. I found it useful to have a listen to the album Oh Mercy!while reading the chapter devoted to putting the album together in New Orleans with Daniel Lanois.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for Bob Dylan's next book (hurry Bob!)
Not many books hold my attention. They sit around my house half unread. Add to that my short attention span and that I don't want to bother reading any fictional words from an unknown somebody's book.I'm old enough to be Bob Dylan's daughter and have never owned one of his albums.Of course I know his music classics that other people have covered over the years...many I didn't know Bob had written until reading this book. I came to this book with an open mind, not a 4 decades follower of Bob Dylan like many of the other reviewers. With that background info in mind......I started Bob Dylan's book Chronicles Volume 1 and could not put it down.It opened a door into the sixties and Folk music era that took place when I was a wee toddler but have always been very curious about. It provides real, personal moments as Bob talks and you sense his enthusiasm or other emotions all intertwined. His words and phrasing bounced my mind around on the page and into different years and descriptions in each sentence.I learned about the music world then, his contacts, friends, desires, wishes, ups/downs, a life event here and there, and I was spellbound by the the visual imagery he succinctly provided thru a few words when telling of places, events, people, his journey and personal moments in his life - one after another.I thought many of his ways/wordings were very salt-of-the-earth "Midwestern" that someone not raised in the Midwest wouldn't recognize or be able to smile about while reading...I should know since I'm from Missouri. I laughed several times. He's funny as well. Bob, please write your next book soon.I'm waiting for it impatiently.Until then, I purchased my first Bob Dylan album and listened last night (Modern Times).Songs 4 and 7 made me cry. The words & images in both his songs and book are intriguing, beautiful, real, unexpected. The tunes can grip the mind. Thanks to Bob Dylan for opening up the door to his life after all these years. He didn't have to and could've just faded away like so many others. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-serving and poorly written...
I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into the mind of a violent criminal street gang member. What I found was page after page of Mr. Scott rationalizing his behavior, and in fact glamourizing the life of street gang members. After reading this book, I am convinced that Mr. Scott has no remorse for his behavior, nor does he accept any responsibility for his actions. On top of the author's self-serving writing, the book is difficult to read because of the grammatical errors that are the books only consistent trait. This one is a must miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing book
This book chronicles Monster Kody Scott's life as a 8 Tray Crip in LA. The first part of the books is his life in the gang; the middle of the books is his time spent in prison, and towards the end is when he becomes more of a black revolutionary and stops banging. Honestly, I thought the most interesting part was the first part when he told of his life in the gang. But for those who like inspiring stories, they will really like the ending. Awesome and well written, very intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sanyika Tells His Story
Monster is an auto-biography of the the ex-Eight Tray Crip member "Monster" Kody Scott, or as he's known now, Sanyika Shakur. This book sheds light on the harsh realities taking place in inner-city America, telling a story that few would most likely not live to tell. Sanyika holds nothing back whilst telling his story. He lived with a single mom, and he had five other brothers. There was no man in the house. At the tender age of eleven, he was initiated into the Crips (Eight Tray Crip), after he belted rival gang members with eight shots from a sawed-off shotgun. After he was initiated, Sanyika earned respect for himself by commiting terrible acts of violence and always being on his guard. This earned him the name of "Monster".

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone--buddhist or not.
This is an extraordinary, from the heart account of life with a Mahasiddha, written in the most intimate terms of a love affair that continues to this day. This book goes beyond the aspects of any religious dogma into the ordinariness of everyday love of a woman for a man. This book is completely inspiring.Just put yourself in the author's place to see how that feels.Dragon Thunder is a must read for anyone. ...
