When he was but 10 years old, Tim Tyson heard one of his boyhood friends in Oxford, N.C. excitedly blurt the words that were to forever change his life: "Daddy and Roger and 'em shot 'em a Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A view from the white side
So often readers and historians look at the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of African Americans. In this case, Tim Tyson tells the story from the view of a young white boy whose father is a concerned and dedicated white minister trying to do the right thing in the American South during the 1950's and 60's.The result is a moving account of the tragic death of a black man and the events that flowed from his death. But even more, it is the story of a town and a community, both black and white and how this single and tragic event changed a community and the lives of so many people.
4-0 out of 5 stars civil rights movement in small southern town
Was very interested in the book & felt that I gain information that I did not have before. Must read for anyone who has an interest in those times

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read! It should be taught in high school.
This is probably one of the best books about the civil rights era. It is the story of the racial murder of a black man in Oxford, North Carolina and how it effected the people of the town. The author lived through these events, albeit as a child. These events so shaped his life that he felt compelled to later delve into their history.

5-0 out of 5 stars the spirit of Iz and the Hawaiian spirit felt in this book...
This book gave me "chicken skin", the Hawaiian term for goose bumps. It captures the spirit of Iz and the Hawaiian people.Touches the heart.Great portrayal of the history of Hawaiian music as well.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars No chicken skin feelings here.Mo' bettah lissen da mele.
I was looking for chicken skin whilst reading an emotional biography of the wonderful singer, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole. Not much emotion in this book, though. No meat to it -- I read it in less than an hour. It is billed by Bess Press as a story of how he overcame great odds to become kaulana and hanohano. There is no story -- or at least not one that we didn't already know about.Jumps right from being born to briefly mentioning some disturbances when youthful, to being this famous, wonderfully-beloved musician and singer. The foreword by Iz's widow, Marlene, is only 7 lines of type about 6" long. Not too much of a personal involvement on part of the widow, I would say.Well, needless to say, I was quite disappointed.First of all, this is not a biography by any stretch of the imagination. It may give a few facts about Iz's life, but there is no meat to this at all.Mostly it is just factoids interspersed with pictures. The book would be even more sparse if it weren't for reprints of various Hawaiian newspaper articles. Yes, there are some never before published family pictures, but the majority are blown up, full-page pictures of album/CD covers, plus the back side of them that tells you what songs. Moreover, some of the same pictures are reprinted several times throughout the book.It does not seem to be literature at all. There were just a few lines about his parents, not too much more about Skippy, next to nothing about his sisters.Nothing about his happy summer days on Ni'ihau.Nothing about who taught him to play `ukulele. Moreover, I feel ripped off because there was no feeling of Iz or aloha at all in this book.Frankly, devoid of emotion.I rated it with two stars only because the world is still hungry for just about anything on the topic of Iz.If you are wanting to read a biography type book about Hawaiian musicians, I strongly urge you to read Eddie Kamae's book, "Hawaiian Son".More better info, more feeling of aloha and plenty of chicken skin moments.Mr. Carroll, you have disappointed me.The only reason to buy this book is in the hope that the Kamakawiwo`ole `ohana will somehow benefit financially. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great football bio
Bill Romanowski's book is excellent. To his credit,he acknowledges
3-0 out of 5 stars Decent read, but call him what he is ...
"Romo" is an interesting enough read if you're into getting to the root of someone's supressed problems that play out in real life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks ROMO! - Brutally honest and insightful
I played football for 13 years and unfortunetly my NFL dreams were cut short for health reasons. Romanowski truly was THE hardest worker in the NFL in his days. I've followed him since his Eagles days. I am sure I am not just speaking for myself when I say football athletes can relate to him at many levels. Ive played at Romos collegiate level and have been to Bowl Games and I can't stress enough about the lengths at which every athlete goes through to increase performance and game. I finally had my chance to meet Romo in the 2002 season and got to stay at the hotel with my uncle (coach)and the Raiders, and personally met him and witnessed his pre-game rituals. He is a truly interesting man and always had job security on his mind and was the driving force. I respect his honestly with regards to admitting defeat vs teams and players.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fighting for Home and Country
There is so much to be learned from this book.It is a history lesson of Iran.It provides a window into Koranic teachings and Islamic law."In Islam, there exists a tradition of intellectual interpretation and innovation known as 'ijtihad', practiced by jurists and clerics over the centuries to debate the meaning of Koranic teachings as well as their application to modern ideas and situations.Sunni Islam effectively closed the door to 'ijtihad' several centures back, but in Shia Islam, the process and spirit of 'ijtihad' thrive."
5-0 out of 5 stars Inside Iran . . .
Written by Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, this highly readable memoir reaches out specifically to American readers to help them understand the Islamic Republic of Iran as the two countries continue on what gives every appearance of a collision course. While Iran (Persia) can look back over a history of 3000 years, recent memory of political history dates from the 1953 CIA-assisted overthrow of its democratically elected prime minister, Mossadegh. The more than 50 years since then, as remembered by Ebadi, are a record of sometimes concealed, sometimes open animosity between our two nations, leading to the current dispute over Iran's development of a nuclear capability.
5-0 out of 5 stars Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope
Shirin Ebadi's book helped me to understand Iran's people. It is interesting to read what other countries think of ours and why.She has done remarkable work over the years in a country that holds women down. She was not born to wear veils and even when she married they were not worn. The book is not overly political.I would recommend it highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book, but...
I feel the real value in this book is in how Joe shares his learnings and experiences with many self-growth modalities. In the beginning of the book, Joe shares a few difficult experiences he had in his youth related primarily to his father. Then he moves into his experiences as a follower of Rajneesh. This is followed by his many experiences interviewing and/or participating in some of the most effective and controversial people and organizations in the human potential movement of the 70's and 80's.As you read his experiences you learn FROM him and THROUGH him.My only criticism is that I ran into some annoying typos.I will definitely invest in some of his other work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
I am amazed. I didn't know what to expect with this new one by Dr. Vitale. I stumbled across this one after reading his other best-sellers like "Spiritual Marketing." well, this one sent electric shocks through me. The first two chapters alone were riveting. I couldn't believe what Dr. Vitale had gone through. 5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational masterpiece
I have known Joe Vitale for over a decade and have been amazed at the success he's achieved since I met him.But when I read Adventures Within and learned just how far Joe had come *before* I met him, I was even more astonished.Anyone who has ever been overwhelmed with doubt, debt or other troubles and wondered if it is really possible to break free should read Adventures Within.Joe's story ranges from heart-breaking to heart-warming and everything in between. But most importantly, it leaves you full of hope and the sense that anything is possible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A life changing story
I grew up looking at the pictures in my father's copy of "Through Gates of Splendor" and was very familiar with the story, although I don't think I ever read the book through.Steve Saint's book is the most powerful and moving story I have ever read. I am amazed that the women allowed their children to go live amongst this savage tribe, and yet, I realized near the end of the story that the women were as remarkable as the men who sowed the seed of their blood in the sand.Seeds that came up and bore a hundred fold. When I read with amazement of how Steve Saint loved and forgave those people, how he left his affluent life in Florida and returned to the jungle to live, I am amazed at the kind of a man he is. His unerring instinct as to what those people needed, when to move forward, when to pull back....I found myself seeing him as more important and wise than any president or diplomat. I wondered how such a man came to be. Then I understood that his father showed the way. His mother showed the way. Sending him back to live with the tribe made him who he is today. The fact that the women didn't run but stayed with those people made him who he is today. It is who he is through and through. It isn't a facet of personality. It was built into him from the ground up.You can't teach someone to be a great man by telling them how, you have to live it with them.I was also greatly moved by Ginny Saint and her smiling face in the pictures in the book are what actually inspired me to pick up that thick book and read it. What kind of a woman follows a man to such a place and does it joyfully? I want to be such a woman. The book made me say over and over as I was reading it, I'm going to the jungle. I want my life to count.I am tired of soft and easy things. I want to be stretched to the limit of my capacities. Thank God for such an inspiring story.

5-0 out of 5 stars the forgiven
i was surprised that being a christian, no one has ever told me the story of the five missionary men slain by the waodani tribe, so when i heard about this book through an interview with the author steve saint i got straight on to amazon and grabbed a copy. i loved the story based on the son (the author)of one of the men killed in the jungle, and his life and forgiveness of the men who killed his dad. this is an amazing story, which will challenge the way we live in the modern, complicated world, when the language, and path of god is so simple and with in reach of the most unsophisticated people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I am quite familiar with the story of the five missionaries who were killed by tha Waodani. I have read "Through Gates of Splendor" and have also seen the movie version of "End of the Spear." I have to admit, I was somewhat disappointed by the movie version of "End of the Spear." It made me long for more information. I have wanted to read the book version for a long time, and finally got the chance to. "End of the Spear"

4-0 out of 5 stars Right up there with Frances Mayes, for sure.
I felt obliged to give this four stars instead of five only because I could not relate with Mrs. De Blasi not matter how hard I tried (did that rhyme?).And I DID try - very hard in fact.I found myself WANTING to relate because her's was SUCH a story of faith and risk and love and adventure. But at the end of the day, I, personally, would have booted Mr. Moody, "the stranger" out on his butt in two shakes and told him to paddle his sorry behind back down the canal.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book
Few books make me both misty-eyed and laugh out loud... This was one of them. Can't recommend it highly enough, even if you don't care to move to Venice in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!
This book is truly magnificent. It is a beautiful and very realistic love story (both with the country and the man). I identified very much with the story and with Marlena's character and her willingness to put-up with a difficult husband that she is very much in love with. Marlena De Blasi is an inspiration to everyone who wishes to "always be a beginner" and who wants to live life to the fullest. This is also a very sensual book, so many flavors, smells, sensations.

4-0 out of 5 stars A passionating story
The life of the young Esmeralda Santiago is interesting, well-written and full of colored details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
My husband is Puerto Rican (I am not) and read this book years ago. He said that it reminded him of a combination of his mom and grandmother's childhoods. He lent it to his sister, mom and grandmother to read (they all loved it) and eventually to me. I just couldn't get enough of it. Then my mother-in-law lent us "Almost A Woman", which I just finished. Esmeralda Santiago is an amazing writer with a great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dripping with Delight; A Guava Worth Picking!
Bursting with vividly vibrant details, Esmeralda Santiago's autobiography, When I was Puerto Rican will inspire all ages of readers. Santiago's story is captivating and refreshingly presented.

4-0 out of 5 stars An account of the personal experiences of an author
This book is a memoir. It is not a simple tale of food. If you somehow are confussed about this like some of the reviewers you may not like this book very much.I actually enjoyed this on many levels - the honesty took my breath away. But is also made me feel uncomfortable knowing the people in this book might be hurt all over again by the telling of the tale. Hoping that's not the case I must say this book has a unique "flavor" and may not appeal to everyone. It did me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light, fun read
Easy, fun read. Much better than watching mind numbing garbage on the telly. I agree with some reviewers that the author went on a bit too long about her sexcapades but nevertheless I was entertained. I really enjoyed her style of writing. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on "Tender at the Bone."

Editorial Review

At age nine, Lucy Grealy was diagnosed with a potentially terminalcancer. When she returned to school with a third of her jaw removed, shefaced the cruel taunts of classmates. In this strikingly candid memoir, Grealy tells her story of great suffering and remarkable strength without sentimentality and with considerable wit.Vividly portraying the pain of peer rejection and the guilty pleasure of wanting to be special, Grealycaptures with unique insight what it is like as a child and young adult to be torn between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly tobe perfect ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It had Potential...
Avoid this book like the plague.
5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly honest and touching memoir from a real human being
Many reviewers have beautifully reviewed this haunting memoir. I just wanted to add how touched I was by Lucy's struggle, not to be special, but to be normal. Her memoir describes acutely the psychic distress of finding oneself outside the norm in society. Despite Lucy's struggle for acceptance and normalcy, she still displays true wisdom and strength from her "outsider" perspective. Some think her stance toward others is unsympathetic, I found her to be as unflinching in revealing her thoughts and found her level of awareness of herself refreshing, if self-oriented, at times. There is something about standing out in an unwanted way that can create a barrier between us and the rest of the world and perhaps Lucy had a protective barrier that closedher off from others. Who am I to judge, I just stand in awe of the courage she displays time and again.Other reviewersalso criticize Lucy for not overcoming her need for acceptance, or normalcy. I can only thank Lucy for incarnating and being who she was, so honestly, so vulnerably, and for offering us an uncensored, heart-breaking, and ultimately revealing view of her experience of the world. I am sure many will resonate with the experience of being "outcast" and feel we have a friend and supporter in Lucy. Thanks Lucy, for not putting any masks on in your writing but allowing us to see youin your true complexity. I salute you wherever you may be.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Spiral Staircase Revisited
This book was much better written than Karen Armstrong's The Spiral Staircase but it was the same whining and self-pitying all over again. The author had no real feelings about her father's death yet she can't understand how people lack compassion for her deformity. When a woman who had had a mastectomy spoke to her about her own deep feelings of ugliness and loss, she dismisses the other woman's feelings because no one else's suffering can be as great as her own. It seems like she could only think of herself, her own feelings and her complete misery at being "ugly" without the slightest inkling that other people might have feelings and tragedies in their own lives.

Editorial Review

When reality got "too dense" for 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen, she was hospitalized. It was 1967, and reality was too dense for many people. But few who are labeled mad and locked up for refusing to stick to an agreed-upon reality possess Kaysen's lucidity in sorting out a maelstrom of contrary perceptions. Her observations about hospital life are deftly rendered; often darkly funny. Her clarity about the complex province of brain and mind, of neuro-chemical activity and something more, make this book of brief essays an exquisite challenge to conventional thinking about what is normal and what is deviant. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Funny and Heartbreaking Memoir of a Girl, Interrupted
Girl, Interrupted is about an eighteen year old girl named Susanna Kaysen, who attends McLean Hospital- a psychiatric place for teenage girls. Her new therapist sent her there because he said that she had a personality disorder. Along the way to recovery, she meets new people with problems of their own.
2-0 out of 5 stars not for me....
In my opinion this was not a good book. If it hadn't been such a short read I probably wouldn't have been able to finish it. Maybe the movie is better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Country Club living
In one of the reviews found on my edition states that "Girl, Interrupted" is a writer's book" (Boston Phoenix Literary Section). The Philadelphia Inquirer' review states, "Remarkable....In prose lean and mean," and "it avoids the romantic inflation that most other sufferers of psychoses fall into when they describe their experience". Kaysen simply lets us know, with spare prose, what it is like to have a life interrupted by madness." These reviews praising Kaysen's book are the main reasons why I didn't care for the book as much as would have liked to. Because of that sparse and lean prose the book lacks depth. It reads more like a series of unrelated vignettes rather than a cohesive novel. The reviewer praises Kaysen's book for avoiding "romantic inflation," while I feel it shows the exact opposite.

I love love love this book. I'm a major chick-lit reader, and after reading Bitter, I'm addicted to it, and her website. I would gladly be a citizen of Jennsylvania.

5-0 out of 5 stars smartass's rock
This book is amazing!! However, reading this in public may get some strange looks when you are constantly laughing out loud. The pro in this being that you may get a seat all to yourself. This book tells a riches to rags story (true) in a hilarious truthful way that I think everyone can relate to. I love this book and even though I got this from the library I plan on buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!!!
This is one of those books you can curl up with and have a good laugh, a good cry and feel better about yourself with Jen's poignant tale of life after the dot-com bubble burst. She comes out a changed woman in the end and very relatable. All in all, a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy Hours
This is hands-down the BEST "mommy" book I have read.Forget all the parenting magazines, forget all the girlfriend guides...anyone who has become a mommy and wonders where the wild girl she was before went MUST read this book.I listened to the audiobook and it had me in stitches.Thank you Brett Paesel for your brutal, raw, and much needed honesty!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book
This is the funniest, best book I've ever read about the thoughts and emotions of new mothers.Brett Paesel has had the courage to publish thoughts that I don't even admit I have.Even my husband, who endured my reading it aloud to him, enjoyed it and totally relates to the scenarios Brett paints about her own husband.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very funny, refreshingly honest, well-written tale of new motherhood.
Any adult can relate to the core story: How does one resolve a decision your heart knows is right, but which threatens the rest of your being? Here, Brett knows having a husband, child, and family was the right choice, but she'd like a second opinion. What follows is a story of a woman searching for the answer she knows it out there. The answer that is, "yes. Yes. Yes!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, touching story
This is a wonderful, touching book. It is a harrowing story of a young women's struggle to survive the Holocaust and save her toddler daughter. The story takes place in Hungary in the last year of the war. A resourceful and courageous woman, the mother manages to hide as a servant woman. She is both willing and able to do whatever it takes to stay alive. The latter part of the book is devoted to her husband's search for her and his daughter. This search is eventually successful and the family builds a happy life after the war.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
"We Are On Our Own" is a gripping memoir of a mother's struggle to survive in Hungary during WW ll.Miram Katin recalls her early childhood in this beautifully illustrated graphic novel. It is a moving tale about the horrors of war and a mother's determination to save her child at any cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was almost better than my own honeymoon!
Franz Wisner AND his brother are funny, smart and so very brave!I found this book in the travel section of my local bookstore, but it very much deserves its place on the NY Times Bestseller List (where it's been for 15 straight weeks at the time of this review).Move that book to the front of the store! You will love this book for several reasons:
1-0 out of 5 stars Good Title: Bad Book
Not witty enough to be funny. Not deep enough to be heartfelt. Not written well enough to have been published.I got a great idea why his fiance dumped him and why his boss demoted him, but I have no idea why any editor gave the 'thumbs up' to this mess.I gave the one star for the title. It was the most interesting part of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title scare you...

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I read it in like three days, would have read it cover to cover in a day but work, wife and three kids prevented that from happeneing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong friendship with Elvis Presley
I think this is one of the best books I have read.I am an Elvis fan through and through. It told about a young boy meeting a very famous person and how their friendship grew.It made me laugh and it made me cry.It let you see inside Elvis the person, not the superstar or the legend. It wasn't degrading or accusing. It was very thoughtfully written. You got to see another side of Elvis through this friend's eyes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jerry Loved Elvis Like A Brother - End of Story
It's a fairly good book about Elvis and a lot of good stuff written about Jerry.I did not think there was enough in-depth information about Elvis in the book - especially about all the women that Elvis was involved with.I'm sure Jerry knew them all, but said nothing much about them because of Priscilla and wanting to keep his friendship with her and Lisa Marie.Jerry must have known Gladys and Vernon and could have said more about all of that part of Elvis's life too, but didn't.This is a pretty good book and it is well-written, but I was looking for a little more insight into Elvis's life.I know that Jerry knows a ton of stuff that he will never reveal, but that is his choice.I am a die-hard Elvis fan and read all the books I can about Elvis. This book is more about Jerry and less about Elvis. ...
