Editorial Review

The language and form of this searing book are as powerful as the life experience that inspired them. In a series of essays that cohere into a spiritual autobiography, the author writes prose that's deceptively simple yet rich in metaphor. An wild horse living in the parking lot of a Navajo school becomes a symbol for living creatures' intrinsic wildness, tamed only at a terrible cost. "We are all runaway horses" is one constant refrain, as is the reminder "you are your history." The author's history is painful: born in 1950 the son of an alcoholic Native American woman and a white cowboy father who "would sell my mom to other migrant men for five dollars," Nasdijj grew up a "mongrel" and an outcast, contending with his violent father's demons while his mother beguiled them with Indian stories. Living on a reservation, never fully accepted because of his white skin, he adopted a baby boy with fetal alcohol syndrome who died at age 6. The book's most beautiful passages meditate on Tommy Nothing Fancy's short life and express his father's love. Nasdijj has been homeless, he has taught Indian children on a reservation, he has retraced with a historian friend the dreadful forced march to Bosque Redondo, where the Navajo and their culture were nearly exterminated. These and many other ordeals are related in the agonizingly lucid words of someone who has turned to writing as a lifeline. This remarkable memoir has its share of bitterness and anger, but Nasdijj transcends both in his acceptance of the world that made him and in the knowledge that "the reservation runs like blood through a river of my dreams." 3-0 out of 5 stars I give this book three stars knowing it is a fraud
This book has to be the worst and most sickening case of cultural apropriation in the history of the US.The fact that it was writen by a white man is further proof of the emperialist and colonialist mentality that still exists in this nation twords the Native American Community. However when I forst read this book Nasdijj was still a navajo within the eyes of the public. At the time the book mooved me deaply.Nasdijj's use if diction and the storytelling nature of his narative was beutifle. It made me want to learn more about the status and problems facing the Plains Indian community and work bring about change. That meens somthing to me and despite what I know now that initial responce when I first read this book stays with me to this day.I urge those who are going to critisize this book to read it first if you have not, and when you read it, do so with eyes un clouded by the trouth.

1-0 out of 5 stars One Fraud Too Many
It's a shame that because of works like this, not to mention the Forrest Carter (Education of Little Tree) scandal a few years back, many unknown and undiscovered--but authentic--Native American writers will probably have to struggle that much harder to become published. Well-established American Indian authors are already naturally suspect of any newcomers on the scene; the sad fact is that for some reason Native American culture and identity is misappropriated by more misguided white writers--whatever their individual agendas might be--than any other race or ethnic group. The sad truth is that, for every Forrest Carter and Timothy Barris who manage to secure a publishing contract, there are dozens of truly deserving Native voices that are going unheard. And thanks to these imposters making the buying public- as well as agents and editors- increasingly suspicious of anyone claiming to be Native American-their chances to be read and heard are only going to diminish.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Joke
To hold the power to move people with words regardless of the validity of those words is a very impressive art. With the exception of one specific actor, no one in history has made a powerful film about his or her own life. There is no reason to believe that written works shoud be treated differently from movies in this respect. Obviously this writer has realized that human deception is an important method of eliciting an emotional response from an audience. By reading the responses from readers prior to the false exposure of the true writer, it is clear that this man or woman is light years ahead of current authors when it comes to manipulating the human brain into believing a story, factual or not. With the increasing pace of desensitization of the mind in recent years, obviously new techniques must be made available to entertain an insatiable public. To say that this author's amazing work is only confined within the pages of the book is downwright ludicrous. Everything, including the monikor and real identity of "Timothy Barris" is part of a larger piece of fiction that may be even further exposed as time passes. After this "identity" was unearthed, opposite and even stronger emotional responses were elicited from readers, demonstrated in print on these very pages of Amazon.com. Is it not true that disgust and outrage are also emotions that sub-par authors struggle to touch in their works? "The Blood Runs Like a River Through My Dreams" is such an example of a work of writing and deception that is capable of plucking each string of human emotion in such a way that has never been attempted before. There is a larger picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and compelling account of a woman on the reservation
This is a very powerful book about Mary Crow Dog's experiences growing up as a Lakota (Sioux) woman on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. It should be required reading for anyone who feigns ignorance of the ways that Native Americans continue to be treated in the US today.Local whites, the state of South Dakota, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the rest of the power establishment have their inhumanity exposed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable impact.
I read this when it first came out in 1990, but it is timeless: her struggle and success in surviving a time and place difficult for her race and sex, and much on her own, is profoundly touching. Even if you have read "In The Spirit of Crazyhorse", this adds to that since it is a very personal story told by a Native American woman who was a part of AIM and who gave birth to her first child under fire at the siege at Wounded Knee in 1973. But the story of how her personal strength was forged and tested begins prior to that when she leaves her one-room cabin on the reservation as a child for missionary school, which then sends her on a downward spiral from which it took hard years to recover. Some feelings are shared by women across the boundaries of race and time.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is how America acted only 30 odd years ago...

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
This oft insightful, oft hilarious, oft irreverant book is a great read.I read it first over Christmas, and now I'm reading it with many of my Navajo students. They love it for his erudition and frankness.
5-0 out of 5 stars hysterical and insightful
lame deer's take on the white man's world is so truthful, poignant, and hilarious, make sure you are at liberty to laugh out loud when you pick it up. every few pages will have you smiling, chuckling, if not uproariously laughing while you put the book down, only to pause and then re-read the section for the pure delight of his frank and funny portrayl of a life as a holy man that ranges from wild and wreckless, somber and lonely, to mild and mature. but it's always funny and insightful! i highly recommend!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Vision
_Over the years I have read this book in the wilderness and in the wasteland. Every time that I have reread it I have come away renewed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom and Inspiration Abound!
This is an exceptionally moving book for anyone yearning to know more about Native American spirituality. Black Elk was truly a man filled with the holy spirit. It reminds me of the book, Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Both are highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Religious Classic?
It says on the jacket of this book that Black Elk Speaks belongs in the company of 'religious classics'.Maybe so, but even if you regard his visions as indicative of a religious experience, the parts of the book dedicated to the description of these visions make for rather tedious reading. The real meat of the book is his decriptions of the last of the major indian battles at Rosebud, Little Big Horn (Custer's Last Stand), and Wounded Knee.Black Elkand his friends were there, and lived through those harrowing days.A must-read book for anyone who wants to know how it really was. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ohn Hohn!
If you don't get burning mad at the FBI (Federal Bureau of Indian termination) once you read this book, you are not alive any more and should check the obits for your write-up! This book is well-written by a man who has such limited resources to write thatit is a wonder he can communicate at all. It causes one to ask the rough questions of the government. Why has the truth not been brought forward and why does this man still sit in prison for something he did not do, for something no one ever PROVED he did?
1-0 out of 5 stars Hey Leonard, how are you?
I don't know, but to me it seems to contain, large quantites of suffering and nothing else. The US government seemed to be extremely evil... I really don't like the way he made Native-American all seem as holy saints, himself as a Savior, and the government as Hell.Could he have been more truthful or atleast see be a compationate to EVERONE as he claims he is??

4-0 out of 5 stars PERSERVERANCE
This book is poignant.Leonard Peltier expresses himself very well about the injustice of his people for hundreds of years and still is continuing to this day.He didn't write this book for sympathy but to right a wrong that has been done to him over a quarter of a century ago.He delves into the past, about his ancestors and the origin of the "Sundance", which I thought, years ago, was just a festival that actor/producer Robert Redford sponsored.

5-0 out of 5 stars History every American citizen should know
This passionately written book relates the story of an amazing man whose life existed in two cultures: one Americans label as native/indigenous, the other as cultured/civilized. The circumstances of Montezuma's life placed him in a position few had at that time to help bridge the gap. The rich and well researched detail in this book gives the reader insite into a time and subject in American history about which we all ought to be more informed. The love story that unfolds, the great old photographs, maps, and printed documents that enhance the text, and the quotes from Montezuma's own colorful, often poetic writing make him real and this book a must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars CarlosMontezuma:a must read
Because history is a record written by the winners, most of us grew up with little true knowledge of the struggles that gripped native peoples in the United States.Through the story of the life and times of Carlos Montezuma, Speroff takes us on a compassionate, yet academic journey through the Native American saga of the late 19th, and early 20th century.Montezuma was kidnapped as a young child from his Yavapai parents by Apache warriors and sold to an Italian photographer traveling through the desert southwest.Educated in the leading Indian schools of the time, he embraced the assimilation of Native Americans into the dominant white culture and became the first Native American physician.Through original documents, we follow a transition in Montezuma's thought that leads him to fight for the establishment of a reservation for the Yavapai people. This book is extraordinarily well researched, and includes many photographs of the actual historic sites taken by the author.Montezuma's story is inspiring and compelling, tragic yet uplifting. All this plus a tender and dramatic love story transmitted through original letters make this book a must read.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Frontiersman
An excelent book on the early years of America detailing the lives of the early settlers and their tribulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best American History Books I have ever read
I read the book The Frontiersmen several yeas ago and it was one of the best books I have ever read.I was very impressed with the way the lives of Simon Kenton and Cheif Tecumseh seem to intertwine with one another and I have never forgot about the white man who turned Indian tho I can`t remember his name or about Tecumseh`s love for a white woman that they both knew would never happen.I think every student that takes American History in high school should be required to read this fine book and they would learn alot from it as it is a very informative book about how this country was started and all the hardships they had pulling it together.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely interesting, entertaining, and eye-opening book
If I could rate this book higher than five stars I would. The Ohio River area has so much history that it is absolutely unbelievable. I did not realize how much blood was spilled by both the Settlers or the Native Americans for this land, until I read this book. Allan Eckert has a way of taking the often boring information of a reference book and forming it into an interesting, action-packed masterpiece. Allan Eckert is a absolutely awesome author, and "The Frontiersmen" is Allan Eckert at his best so I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about American history or simply wants to read an entertaining book to give "The Frontiersmen" a try. And I also recommend the other books of this series to anyone who wonders how they are. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great "American" Autobiography
Geronimo: His Own Story is an endlessly fascinating autobiography that belongs in the pantheon of other great American works of autobiography and memoir. This book should take its place alonside other great works of personal non-fiction such as The Autobiography of Malcom X, A Moveable Feast, The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and (arguably the best of the bunch) The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. This is a strong statement, but after reading this short autobiography it's at least an idea that should be entertained. I found things in this book that I was not expecting, and it ended up being a far more complex and intriguing portrait of Geronimo than I had previously entertained. The most fascinating side of Geronimo that comes across in these two-hundred pages is not Geronimo the warrior but Geronimo the diplomat.
5-0 out of 5 stars A warrior's words
"Geronimo: His Own Story" has been revised and edited, with an introduction and notes, by Frederick Turner. This book is the autobiography of the legendary Apache warrior, as told to S. M. Barrett. The copyright page notes that the main text was originally published as "Geronimo's Story of His Life" in 1906.
4-0 out of 5 stars The story in his words...
Mr. Barrett interviewed Geronimo after several years of his captivity and this is his version of what happened in the Apache Wars.Definately an interesting read and a great story. Not what you should read if interested in a complete history of the Apache Wars and the part Geronimo had, but still worthwhile as it tells it from his prespective in his old age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
A fascinating account of one man's journey through life both physically and spiritually. A "must read" for any seeker of truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting stories, people need to know America's true history
this book is good, it is accounts of things that have happened but not in an extremely artistic way of writing, i would say telling of stories more than literature, which makes sense.More people should be learning about the native american tribes that have lived on this land for so many years. You see from a different point of view the effects of the white man on the earth, what a destructive way of life is now lead in America (pollution littering plant and animal abuse racial problems etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Literary Classic, American Classic,
I could not have read this book without then reading the original notes from which it was taken."Black Elk Speaks" is a lovely piece of literature, but it is incomplete without the original notes, published as "The Sixth Grandfather:Black Elk's Teachings Given to John G. Neihardt."I admire Black Elk's ability to express universal philosophical insights. This book will be understood on many levels, but was meant to appeal to those seeking a mature contemplation on the great mystery of life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid credentials but too abstract
--Dr Alvord writes about her journeys as a Native American student and physician. The book seems clearly designed for non-technical readers rather than the professional medical community, and there's little medical jargon. She uses her own difficult pregnancy and the death of a beloved grandmother as case studies in integrating Western medicine and Navajo ideas.5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK
I picked up this book and I could NOT put it down. What a wonderful journey described here....how she interlocks traditional medicine with Navajo, how harmony and positive spirit is such a process in the healing world. You will not be disappointed with this read. 5-0 out of 5 stars What We All Want in a Doctor
This book was recommended by a friend, and after I read it, I chose it as my selection for my book club.Living in the Southwest, the insight into Native American culture was especially educational.Alvord seems to confirm what so many of us as patients have been saying for years:give us a doctor who will take the time to get to know us on a personal level and treat the whole person.I would recommend this to men and women, young and old alike! 5-0 out of 5 stars A Lakota History
The Journey of Crazy Horse by Joseph M. Marshall III isn't just a history of one man, it's the saga of the end of a proud people, symbolized by the life of their bravest warrior. This is the story of a hero, a martyr, and truth be told, a successful terrorist defending his lands against an invasion. He failed, but he never compromised. What makes this telling special is the hand of Joseph Marshall, a Lakota whose story mixes the pride and sadness of one intimate with the culture and whose history was so deeply marked by the last Lakota warrior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of the Lakota tribe during the late 1800's.
This book is not just about the man, or the hero Crazy Horse, its the history of the end of the free reign of the Lokota tribe. It's cultural war from the point of the native Americans. You know, now that Eastern Montana is becoming devoid of dry land farmers, maybe we should consider giving those homesteads back to the Lakota tribe.
4-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
I picked this book up while in South Dakota recently.Having visited the Crazy Horse monument, I felt I should learn more about Crazy Horse the man rather than the legend.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the 2best books ever written
Reading is the most boring human activity there is... unless it comes to reading certain books, those actually being the only objects that should be called "books"as opposed to the rest which are just printed paper sheets. Writing a real "book" takes the best there is in humankind and the authors were lucky enough to have it all during the writting of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read
The book could be described as "dry" on occasion but it's History, forgotten History at that. I loved Mr.Aleshire's book about a true Hero that so little has been written of. I enjoyed the chapter notes and appreciate that Mr. Aleshire added his own assumptions at time. I had a hard time putting this book down and have recommended it to people I know would enjoy it. My Great-Grandmother mentioned Lozen when I was younger and until I was in High School I thought she was a myth. What a terrible shame it is to know so little about someone so legend worthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lozen.
I have learned from a reliable source (another author in fact)that Peter Aleshire is an Apache? His book I found hard to put down. One of the best written on this elusive and mysterious woman. He has given an honest account of her life and weaved facts with probabilities that he has recorded as his own assumptions to fill in the gaps where no records exist.

1-0 out of 5 stars not well told
This book is too dry for such a fascinating, larger-than-life Apache woman. Try Ghost Warrior by Lucia St.Clair Robson instead - a much more intersting story that does justice to Lozen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Personal History and Social Commentary
Ojibwa Warrior is an autobiography and first hand account of the formation and rise of the American Indian Movement told by one of its founders, Dennis Banks.Banks' book, Ojibwa Warrior, is a multi-dimensional account of the history of racism and empire in the United States which should be of great interest not only to historians but also to anthropologists, philosophers, ecologists and especially social and environmental activists.
5-0 out of 5 stars A NATIVE AMERICAN BEST SELLER
What do you say about Dennis Banks? You say a true warrior. This is a book that should have been out years ago.Dennis' life is full of rawness, meaningful, honest, strong and passionate times.Dennis captivates you with the rawness of his upbringing, he swells your heart with all the trials and tribulations of his personal thoughts and feelings, such meaningful passages; and most of all his honesty regarding his feelings of being a leader. . . passing it on . . . getting back to his roots. He brings meaning to us as a people, he makes us look at ourselves and appreciate where we came from and what we have and what we should never, never forget.Dennis is a true American warrior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a novel but is as deep as an autobiography should be
This is an amazing tale of one of the greatest men of the civil rights movement. It gives a very detailed acount of Dennis Banks' life and of AIM a good read if you want to know aobut modern Native Issues.
