Everyone knows that Galileo Galilei dropped cannonballs off the leaning tower of Pisa, developed the first reliable telescope, and was convicted by the Inquisition for holding a heretical belief--that the earth revolved around the sun. But did you know he had a daughter? In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming read
Reading letters to Galileo from his daughter is something every scientist, historian, or interested reader can now enjoy. Dava Sobel tirelessly hunted across continents for the letters, and then learned Italian in order to translate them into English. The result is a splendid and insightful collection, revealing the Galileo that history forgot. Instead of the familiar and legendary iconoclastic Church-challenging rebel, we see a pious man who fathered two nuns and spent a great deal of time trying to reconcile his science with his God. This book will sweep you away to a time and place full of conflict and misunderstanding, a place that hasn't existed for four hundred years, but is undeniably very present today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love
Galileo's Daughter waited in my accumulation of books for several years. The "Best Seller" tag on the cover always puts me off. Most 'best sellers' are abject wastes of time, whose sales have been propped up by the praises of critics too used to praising abject wastes of time. Well, now that I've offended many, I admit that there are exceptions. Here is one.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not so compelling
After reading Longitude, I was disappointed by this book. It's arguably a more compelling and provocative topic, but somehow it didn't come to life the same way.It did provide a sense of the politics of science in the 16th century, but I was expecting more about Galileo's daughter (silly me).Anyway, I think this book is primarily of interest for someone already interested in the topic, which wasn't the case for Longitude. ... Editorial Review

The thorniest scientific problem of the eighteenth century was how to determine longitude. Many thousands of lives had been lost at sea over the centuries due to the inability to determine an east-west position. This is the engrossing story of the clockmaker, John "Longitude" Harrison, who solved the problem that Newton and Galileo had failed to conquer, yet claimed only half the promised rich reward. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I suggest this book to anyone interested in geography and history.
I chose this one because I thought it kind of related to me in a way, but I always thought it would be just a bunch of useless fact. As I read it, I became more and more interested in the struggle to 'find the longitude.' I suggest this book to anyone interested in geography and history. It's also an easy reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars An epic 40 year struggle!
Dava Sobel, like Simon Winchester or Canada's Pierre Berton, has clearly mastered the art of writing history in a form that is not only informative but, perhaps more important, is also compelling and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crocs Rule and So Does This Book!
If you're an avid viewer of "The Crocodile Hunter", as I am, than this book is a must have.True, much of the information in can be picked up from the show. However, I actually enjoyed reading about Steve and Terri's adventures a bit more than watching them. You learn more about their families and what motivates them. After reading the book, I've developed a desire to learn more about wildlife conservation and what part I can play in it.I would highly recommend this book for any animal lover or Crocodile Hunter fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but too darned short!
To millions around the world, Steve Irwin is known as "the Crocodile Hunter," thanks to his wildly popular series on Animal Planet. To millions more, he's known as "that crazy Australian guy."THE CROCODILE HUNTER, a book by Steve and Terri Irwin, won't change anyone's mind about Steve's sanity, nor will it provide new insight into the man and his adventures for those already intimately familiar with his television exploits.THE CROCODILE HUNTER will, however, provide a few hours of distraction from the tube and more leisurely exploration of Steve and Terri's usual talking points about wildlife conservation.3-0 out of 5 stars adventurers tend not to be introspective
disappointing. a short work. steve's life is presented in little more than outline depth. while atriculate on tv, doesn't transfer to the written page.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
This book made me want to become a marine scout sniper. However, since I'm joining the Army....hahaha...well that's impossible. But this book shows you the thought process of a particular sniper, tactics, his heroism, dedication, FOCUS, and determination to do his job so that more marines could live. An amazing book, I would say. This book also gives you a clear picture of what a marine scout sniper's job is, although there wasn't too much of the recon part of it. This book gives you a mental picture of what's going on in Vietnam, almost like watching a movie. Entertaining, yet informative. Also talked about how they created the M40 sniper rifle and how they got rid of (i'm going out on a limb here) almost all of its weaknesses/faults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Written History, But...
Well-written history of a war and those who fought in it with heroism and skill, but I shouldn't have tried to read this. It's just too bloody for me, I guess, and I couldn't finish it. But that's nota comment on the quality of the book, just its subject matter, which turned my stomach and really, deeply, got to me. For anyone interested in an ultra-realistic account of a sniper's life in Vietnam, this is the book. It's among the most visceral, lingeringly disturbing memoirs on the subject of modern war I've ever held in my hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sniper book that you can't put down
This book tell the story of Carlos Hathcock tours in Vietnam, an sniper in the top of his game with not equal, the book is full of his sniping mission and is a easy read. I can't recall a moment where I felt the story was dragging.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Drink the Koolaid
As a Marine who met John Boyd in the early 1980's, I can attest to the fact that he was clearly brilliant, irrefutably abrasive, and undeniably anti-authoritarian.To his credit, Robert Coram has captured those aspects of his personality well, and his biography reads like an exciting novel.
5-0 out of 5 stars briliant thinker
Boyd was a genius fighter pilot. He reinvented air-to-air combat tactics in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. Even today, his ideas on combat seem advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fourth Generation Warfare Godfather
While experts on the 2nd Iraq War give credit for the quick victory to SECDEF Rumsfeld's deputies and the Bush Administration, the core foundation to maneuver warfare (and the key to the victory) was provided by the deceased Colonel John Boyd. His concepts of OODA (observe-orient-decide-act) forced the U.S. Military to change their thinking on command and control of armed forces and their interaction on the battlefield and beyond. This book, "The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War", is an outstanding biography of this amazing warrior. From his blue-collar upbringing in Erie, Pennsylvania to his battles in the Pentagon, the Ghetto Colonel help form the AirLand battle strategy of the 1980s (with the advent of the F-15/F-16), and Maneuver Warfare for the 1990s and 2000s (influencing USMC thinkers).

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise For Lono!
Once again HST delves deep into the dark side of the human mind. Whether it's fishing for drugs in an airplane toilet or running over stray dogs in a drunken stupor, Hunter takes his reader on a wild ride through mysterious Hawaii. If you want to take a trip without the airfare (or the acid) crack open this oversized volume and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing visual collectors item
This book is so big that it won't fit on my flippin' book shelf, and the reason for that is because of Ralph Steadman's full size color pictures throughout. As a matter of fact, there's more to the pictures than to the actual writings of the good doctor. It's an interesting read, all in all, but the book itself is only 200 some odd pages and a little less than half of these pages are dedicated to Ralphs artwork. The actual read only takes about an hour, and during the read, one can't help but think that there is whole chapters missing from the text. Anyways, I consider this an essential "collectors item" from the king of Gonzo, but not quite essential reading. Just because of the unique book design and layout (and artwork) it is a real treasure to own, but it is not the "Fear and Loathing in Hawaii", as some have called it. It is worth the money (36$)and if you find one cheaper (not hardcover) I would not buy it. This is an essential hardcover buy, and if it was reduced to anything less than it is, I would have been disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars great release
this is a fantastic release of one of HST's least known works. not as crazy as fear and loathing in las vegas or as well written as the rum diaries, but still a fine read. ralph steadman's artwork infull color and at the large size they are printed in for this book are simply amazing ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Reading!
As one fascinated by the medical field, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have much admiration for Katrina Firlik for her hard work and endurance expended to make it as a successful Neurosurgeon. I had no idea that there were so few Neurosurgeons in the U.S. as well as that it was such a predominantly male dominated field. I loved reading of her patient encounters as well as her feelings in dealing with some of the more difficult situations. She has a wonderful writing style. I hope she has more to come in the future!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good first book
I did enjoy reading Dr. Firlik's book though at times it tended to skip around from one subject to another. This is not another "House of God" and I am sure was never intended to be. This is not another Oliver Sachs type of book. It is a solid work and she does write well.It is the story of her 7 year neurosurgery training and that was interesting to me. I have known a number of neurosurgeons and they have some things in common - competence and intensity. She seems to fit that mold. Her last chapter speculating about advances in neurosurgery was most intertesting to me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good
Well written, intelligent. A good look into what it is that those brain surgeons actually do. I for one never knew that neurosurgeons and neurologists are a different breed altogether. And yes, the one neurologist I know does have a goatee and wears a bow tie..

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not funy
After years of listening to Greenberg and following his career both in Chicago and nationaly, I was a little disappointedthat I wasn't more inpressed with what he had to say.His amusing neurotic nature is one of everyman, and the book does have some amusing moments.Mike is a bumbler, as all middle-aged men eventually become, and his mishaps are no more newsworhty than anybody else's.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rating Depends on Your Point of View
Did my opinion of the president change after reading this book? Not really. I read the book with a somewhat-open mind, in that the book is written from the personal perspective of someone who was there.Fleischer wrote from his perspective; gave his testimoy; in that respect, the books is very well written. We're also talking about someone who trusts the President implicitly, so he's going to defend him. So I can't consider this a totally "objective" account of what was going on in the White House during the time the war was being debated.
3-0 out of 5 stars Like some people still watch TV: what do they know?
The author, Ari Fleischer, of TAKING HEAT / THE PRESIDENT, THE PRESS, AND MY YEARS IN THE WHITE HOUSE, having been close to events that may yet produce an indictment of presidential adviser Karl Rove, has a point of view which is in need of a form of analysis made possible in modern society by a heady mix of Freud's books on Thomas Woodrow Wilson and WIT AND ITS RELATION TO THE UNCONSCIOUS.People who appreciate this book are likely to be applying the synthesis at the center of the latter, on "The Pleasure Mechanism and the Psychogenesis of Wit" and "The Motives of Wit and Wit as a Social Process."A little old lady named Helen Thomas is so good at filling the role which clowns reserve for representatives of virtue that Chapter 13 (pages 246-258) gives her a platform capable of illustrating section 64 of Nietzsche's THE GAY SCIENCE on "Sceptics. -- I am afraid that old women in their most secret heart of hearts are more sceptical than all men:" only to have her observations about "turmoil in the Arab world, obviously, from all the things we've been doing" answered at the end of the chapter by:
2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I'm guessing that at least one-half of this book's nearly 400 pages are transcripts -- either of excerpts from the President's remarks or speeches and of the give-and-take at Ari's press briefings.Since Fleischer maintains that his job was never to make news, the transcripts typically illustrate his ability calmly to provide platitudinous non-answers to nearly every question. There are so many of these illustrations that it becomes as tedious and aggravating to the reader as it must have been for the news-hungry journalists. The many excerpts from GWB's remarks serve to reconfirm that -- whatever his other strengths -- it is undeniable (even by his strong supporters) that Bush's rhetorical skills are weak. On the other hand, Fleisher does ably document the naked pro-liberal, anti-conservative bias by so many reporters from the mainstream media; he also demonstrates very convincingly an overwhelming press agenda to create news by finding or exaggerating conflicts between government officials where none exist, i.e. to sensationalize at all costs rather than to inform readers of the real facts. He does a good job, too, of compiling many examples of blatant factual errors by major media, reminding us that, unlike newspapers, broadcast news never troubles to issue corrections. Although my impression of Fleischer from his TV appearances is that he is an interesting, witty, engaging personality, his book is very dry, revealing very little of his personal side and virtually none of the President in whose company he spent so much time. The book contains very few memorable behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and adds astonishingly little to the below-the-surface portrait of Bush (or Fleischer) as a person. The book could have been shortened by half and we would have learned no less about W or Ari.

5-0 out of 5 stars I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book, but...
I feel the real value in this book is in how Joe shares his learnings and experiences with many self-growth modalities. In the beginning of the book, Joe shares a few difficult experiences he had in his youth related primarily to his father. Then he moves into his experiences as a follower of Rajneesh. This is followed by his many experiences interviewing and/or participating in some of the most effective and controversial people and organizations in the human potential movement of the 70's and 80's.As you read his experiences you learn FROM him and THROUGH him.My only criticism is that I ran into some annoying typos.I will definitely invest in some of his other work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
I am amazed. I didn't know what to expect with this new one by Dr. Vitale. I stumbled across this one after reading his other best-sellers like "Spiritual Marketing." well, this one sent electric shocks through me. The first two chapters alone were riveting. I couldn't believe what Dr. Vitale had gone through. 5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational masterpiece
I have known Joe Vitale for over a decade and have been amazed at the success he's achieved since I met him.But when I read Adventures Within and learned just how far Joe had come *before* I met him, I was even more astonished.Anyone who has ever been overwhelmed with doubt, debt or other troubles and wondered if it is really possible to break free should read Adventures Within.Joe's story ranges from heart-breaking to heart-warming and everything in between. But most importantly, it leaves you full of hope and the sense that anything is possible. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that tells it like it is
Follow the life of Nathan Mc Call in this book, see how America works through his eyes. This book was thought provoking, eye opening and sad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Walking in other shoes
This book hurts to read.So much pain in so many lives. But what McCall does is put you in his shoes--this is no easy task for someone who is both white and female. It opens a huge door of understanding. It is not a book for the immature or the fearful.I read some of these reviews and wondered, "What book did they read?"Definately not light reading.Powerful, frightening, enlightening. Needs to be read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The reality in the race relationships in the United States
I have read this book over and over and I still find parallels in the life of Nathan McCall and my own life. Mc Call calls it as it is, the society that we live in is not leveled and only one group that gets all the privileges. That there is no recognition that the success of the whites was made on the backs of African Americans that worked for free, and gave that wealth that even today whites get to enjoy. To many people who think that racism is a thing of the past this book is a revelation and goes deeply into the inherit truths of racism and its consequences. Many people think that black teenagers are "ready" for a life of crime, but the truth is that a hypocritical racist society has designated a path for those teenagers, to see a prove of this just look at school systems in white and black neighborhoods. It is like we are living under two separate states, same flag, same country but different standards of living and I'm not talking about 1862 or 1963, I'm talking about 2006. This book is very powerful with a strong sad message. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A dry examination of an intriguing story
Connie Bruck's tale of greed on (off) Wall Street in the 1980s, focusing solely on Drexel and its Milken-led rise and fall is thorough.Unfortunately, it is a little too meticulous. To understand the junk bond empire Milken created is to understand the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of both him and the company he led to prominance. But the pages upon pages of specific deal details are best understood by investment banking professionals, financiers, etc.I enjoy reading (and for the most part understand) the inner workings of wall street deals, but the level of detail Bruck provides was a little overwhelming.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to inspire big thinking.
This book is fun to read and it full of interesting stories about specific takeovers and deals that took place. It is lacking however in detailing what happened to Milken in the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Junk Bond King When Much of Corporate America Was His Fiefdom.
"Predator's Ball" follows the rise of the junk bond market, from Michael Milken's ambitions in the 1970s through Drexel Burnham's dominance of the market under Milken's leadership in the 1980s, including Drexel's controversial financing of high-profile hostile takeovers, to the beginning of legal trouble for Drexel in 1986. Author Connie Bruck interviewed hundreds of people over a 2 -year period, including Drexel employees and Drexel clients, to learn what went on inside "the Department", Drexel's mythic Beverly Hills junk bond offices. Bruck becomes increasingly critical of Michael Milken's tactics as the book progresses, but it is worth noting that she did not set out to write an expos. Bruck approached the project with sympathies "more toward Milken and his band of renegades than toward the corporate establishment they were attacking", but years of peering inside the Department changed her mind. Regardless of where your sympathies lie, there is a lot of admirable research and fascinating detail in "The Predator's Ball".

Editorial Review

At age nine, Lucy Grealy was diagnosed with a potentially terminalcancer. When she returned to school with a third of her jaw removed, shefaced the cruel taunts of classmates. In this strikingly candid memoir, Grealy tells her story of great suffering and remarkable strength without sentimentality and with considerable wit.Vividly portraying the pain of peer rejection and the guilty pleasure of wanting to be special, Grealycaptures with unique insight what it is like as a child and young adult to be torn between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly tobe perfect ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It had Potential...
Avoid this book like the plague.
5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly honest and touching memoir from a real human being
Many reviewers have beautifully reviewed this haunting memoir. I just wanted to add how touched I was by Lucy's struggle, not to be special, but to be normal. Her memoir describes acutely the psychic distress of finding oneself outside the norm in society. Despite Lucy's struggle for acceptance and normalcy, she still displays true wisdom and strength from her "outsider" perspective. Some think her stance toward others is unsympathetic, I found her to be as unflinching in revealing her thoughts and found her level of awareness of herself refreshing, if self-oriented, at times. There is something about standing out in an unwanted way that can create a barrier between us and the rest of the world and perhaps Lucy had a protective barrier that closedher off from others. Who am I to judge, I just stand in awe of the courage she displays time and again.Other reviewersalso criticize Lucy for not overcoming her need for acceptance, or normalcy. I can only thank Lucy for incarnating and being who she was, so honestly, so vulnerably, and for offering us an uncensored, heart-breaking, and ultimately revealing view of her experience of the world. I am sure many will resonate with the experience of being "outcast" and feel we have a friend and supporter in Lucy. Thanks Lucy, for not putting any masks on in your writing but allowing us to see youin your true complexity. I salute you wherever you may be.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Spiral Staircase Revisited
This book was much better written than Karen Armstrong's The Spiral Staircase but it was the same whining and self-pitying all over again. The author had no real feelings about her father's death yet she can't understand how people lack compassion for her deformity. When a woman who had had a mastectomy spoke to her about her own deep feelings of ugliness and loss, she dismisses the other woman's feelings because no one else's suffering can be as great as her own. It seems like she could only think of herself, her own feelings and her complete misery at being "ugly" without the slightest inkling that other people might have feelings and tragedies in their own lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Business Book YTD in my life.
I read this book a few years ago- made my son read it last year and have read it again recently highlighting what applies to my ambitions (in service). What a great reflection Sam Walton is of the opportunities of our country. When I speak to young people about money- I love telling them Sam Walton was a paper boy starting at age 11, worked and paid his way through college during the depression delivering papers. I began working at 11 for 35 cents an hour saving $286 my first summer, significant experience....America is a great place with great opportunities and people to serve. This book reflects infinite opportunities we have and share with the world. It should be required reading in high school and again in college, current affairs on a productive topic like business.

4-0 out of 5 stars with a co writer, but still good
Made in America had a co writer- John Huey, and that usually makes me strongly not like the style of a book. However, I think Huey and Sam did a great job on this one. It's engaging without being pedantic, and the interspersed quotes made it hum right along.
4-0 out of 5 stars a handy book
it is a simple book, but provides a lot of deep insight about business. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
I love these type of memoirs. A person who is not boasting about their skill or having an attitude. Simply shares the love of his work and love of his county. All of James Herriot's books are wonderfull. I was introduced to the children's books a few years ago and just recently started reading his memoirs. Love it, some parts were a bit dry but the books still flowed well and drew you back. Love the depth of scenery and anicdotes about the area. Recommend any book of his.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This was a great book. I decided to read it because I like animals, and I'm so glad I did. I loved this book; it was really funny and exciting. I am definitaly going to read more of his books and watch the tv show if it's ever on
