2-0 out of 5 stars Good book; post-modern primitivism
Don't believe the hype about China and so-called thousand year traditions. This is a bane of modern life, and in fact is a post-modern myth.An analogy:it was found by anthropologists that certain tribes in Papua New Guinea practiced cannibalism (that spread harmful prions).Upon further research, it was found this practice was not thousands of years old as claimed, but about 100 years old. This justified eradicating this deadly 'tradition' by force (and put an end to the prion disease).See Richard Rhodes excellent book "Deadly Feasts".
5-0 out of 5 stars Resonantes with anyone who has experienced chinese culture from the west
Clissold's book is an excellent stand-alone for those who have never been or done business in China.I imagine it reads slightly like fantasy--it's hard to reconcile the view presented with the Business Today magazine type presentations.
2-0 out of 5 stars waiting for a revealing book on investing in china?keep waiting...
the typical self proclaimed china hand writing books catered to the western audience with typical stories everyone hears if you are in the investing biz.no added value except to "reveal" to the world what had happened to him or her.do these writers trully understand china?; same question to be posed to the thousands of current and potential investors into china.and can they offer insights that are practical, realistic and offers a true fact of what is happening daily on the ground?i seriously doubt any writer can offer this in respect to china because china is a story of limitless permutations.there is only one commonality in china, which is its damn hard to get it right, because there is no right or wrong in this environment.so how does anyone who wants to know how to operate in this environment learn?i beg to differ, but its not gonna be thru a book written by the gangs of so called "china hands" out there.these books are like the ones that came out supporting the great hype about the "new ecnomony" when the heat was scorching white.opportunistic but offers little value.i'll only buy the soft cover versions of these type of books or reading it as borrowed material. there is absolutely nothing valuable in this type of undertaking other than entertaining one on a slow afternoon. 5-0 out of 5 stars Moving
This is a story of ultimate forgiveness told firsthand by Ernest Gordon. The things he and his fellow prisoners of war experienced are near incomprehensible....and out of such despair comes the forever life-changing love they experience through Christ, Who is the example they start to follow in showing similar self-sacrificing love and kindness to their neighbors - even to their enemies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical POW story
While Earnest Gordon's story contains enough description of the atrocities inflicted on him and his fellow POW's by the hands of the Japanese in Southeast Asia during WW2, this does not read like your typical POW story. By typical, I mean a blow-by-blow account (literally at times) of the grueling, horrific experience of Allied soldiers during the war. Though there are passages of such description that aptly set the stage for the story, this book is more about the way in which Gordon and his fellow prisoners of war created the Kingdom of God in the hell of mankind.
5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic story
Ernest Gordon's first-hand account of being a POW in WWII.Gordon, a Scottish soldier and later Presbyterian minister and Chaplain of Princeton University, was captured by a Japanese warship and placed on the crew that built the bridge over the river Kwai. The account is well written and interesting from a historical perspective, but also engaging from a spiritual one as Gordon tells about his own transformation while imprisoned, as well as that of his fellow prisoners. If you are interested in history and biography told through the eyes of faith, then this makes an excellent read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched & Written
This is perhaps the best biography of an American ever written.Manchester juxtaposes the good MacArthur (the military genius and patriotic family man) with the bad MacArthur (the megalomaniacal general whose lapse led to his entire air force being destoryed on the ground at Leyte; not even his wife called him "Douglas").MacArthur is still one of the most polarizing figures in American history; I have spoken to WW2 and Korean veterans who either love him or hate him. This book is a study of greatness. No matter your opinion of MacArthur, one cannot deny the fact that he graduated from West Point with one of the highest averages ever, or how his post-war control of Japan shaped that nation's history. An excellent look into the life of an American Hero/Villain.

2-0 out of 5 stars history or prophecy
I bow to my colleagues who have observed Manchester's acquired taste for the MacArthurian mystique and the apparent failures of historians (not just Willam M.) on getting it right regarding The General's ego and its fallout in combat. Yes this stuff is significant, but all this overlooks one outstanding reality, that Manchester includes but does give the proper emphasis: Doug MacArthur wanted to be president, very, very badly. He truly saw himself as a caesar-like figure in history and positioned himself in returning to the Philipines, administering post-war Japan, and taking the baton in Korea (at the age of 70) for a return to the US in "triumph."Instead he bowed out after being fired by Truman, who had nothing to lose by relieving him.
5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional
This is a masterful biography of Douglas MacArthur, a pivotal 20C figure. He is outlined in all his complexity (good and bad) with the record of his accomplishments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A World War II Classic
With all the books written about World War II and Iwo Jima in particular, it's quite surprising that no one thought of telling this story before. Thank heaven it's been done. James Bradley, son of the corpsman who helped raise the flag along with five Marines writes wonderfully of these young men who in the briefest of moments, in this case, 1/400th of a second, would go on to embody American heroism and triumph in one of this country's most bitter fights.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About War
All the barroom heroes, the bellowing "patriots," and those who are willing to fight to the last drop of someone else's blood...likely wouldn't learn anything from this book. However, for the great majority of humanity, including those who may have been seduced by the "glory" of war, this book would prove most instructive.More than any other book I have read describing personal experiences during war, this one provides a comprehensive, detailed, and compelling picture of its reality. The author spares neither himself nor anyone else, in showing the cruelty, fear, and insanity that both explain and indict battlefield conduct. He describes as "packs of wolves" the groups of starving soldiers walking for days across frozen stretches of land, who desolate whole villages in their search for food.War crimes are commonplace and as understandable as they are deplorable...and mixed in with this are the unexpected mercy, personal misery, and always the desperation of men who expect to die, but don't want to...usually.
2-0 out of 5 stars MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT
Before reading this controversial book, I did some research into the argument that Sajer's memoir is or is not authentic and came away from it sitting on the fence. I had to read this book and judge it for myself, having read more than a few memoirs from the German side previously. Although it has been claimed that Guy Sajer is a real person who did fight in the Wehrmacht, my sources relate that Sajer did not defend the book as a meticulous eye-witness account of the battles he was in or of the time frame in which they were fought. Essentially, Sajer says that his book is more about feelings than about facts. It is an impression of war and not a history book, so fact and accuracy take a back seat to the author's purpose of creating a mood.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable
The Forgotten Soldier is an amazing read, one that will invoke a variety of emotions within the reader. The stark and horifying landscape painted by the author places the reader right at the Eastern Front. If one wants to "feel" the experience of a soldier at battle, this is one of the best books ever written to gain that experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best and Most Enjoyable Business Book I've read.
Not a fan of the business book since I've found many of them so boring. I got this book based on the recommendation on BusinessWeek (I'm a fan of this magazine) and am not disappointed. It's well-written, easy to understand. The writer seems to have all the details nailed down and have a very entertain-able writing style. Almost like reading a very good novel except that this is true, which is very rare when it comes to business book. You will finish it in no time. Unputdownable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rise and Fall
My two cents-
4-0 out of 5 stars The Ballad of Enron
While there was a great amount of greed that contributed to Enron's downward spiral (illegal investment vehicles, ridiculous executive salaries and corporate perk largesse), what makes this different from the cornball `big bad greedy company causes its own downfall' tagline, though, is the book's thesis that business machismo caused Enron's collapse. Note the Enron culture of landing big deals, particularly in new industries and tertiary markets where Enron could be viewed as a trailblazer. Enron loved landing front-page news of its deals; what it failed to do was to see them through and ensure they financially contributed to the company's well-being.As well, during the Jeff Skilling era, there was a constant and unhealthy fixation with Enron's stock price. Enron's corporate performance was directly pegged to the stock price; Enron executives begged, borrowed, and stole to ensure rosy financial statements and a love-in with Wall Street bankers and analysts. Never mind that Enron was bogged down with loser, capital-draining businesses (Broadband, Enron International) that were causing liquidity problems even years before Enron declared bankruptcy. As long as Enron was making deals and the stock price was high, everything was sunny.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Scientist Who Rightfully Deserved the Nobel Peace Prize
In 1970 Dr. Norman Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his extensive work and dedication in the fields of agriculture and food. As Leon Hesser author of The Man Who Fed the World: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norm Borlaug and His Battle to End World Hunger, points out, "there is no Nobel Food Prize. Consequently, the Nobel Committee chose Dr. Borlaug for his brilliant breakthroughs and wheat production technology that led to the relief of hunger in much of the world." Hesser first met Borlaug in 1966 in Pakistan, where Hesser and his crew of agricultural advisors helped in the introduction of Borlaug's high-yielding wheat varieties and technology. The results were unbelievable as Pakistan doubled its wheat production and achieved self-sufficiency in food grains by 1968. A similar program was carried out in India with the same amazing results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relatable Disfunctional Perfection
Ok, so not everyone comes from a family written out of an extended family's fortune because of deviant scheming. But that didn't leave me out of feeling a strong connection to the characters in this book.In every hero, villain, or combination, there was something that reminded me of someone I knew, and I laughed out loud.Plus, I was a big fan of "Tough Jews" and "Lake Effect".But it seems as though Mr. Cohen has found a voice he was reaching for earlier. He is concise and witty. And, although it's a personal story, I wasn't able to put the book down, and gleaned the love (and forgiveness) he has for his family. This book is delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars family business dynamics
Are you interested in how family dynamics effect business? How family business effects families? How individual lives become infected with the family business dynamics?Rich Cohen has written a stunning account of his family's quite well known business, the Cumberland Packing Company which makes Sweet n Low, Sugar in the Raw, NuSalts and Butter Buds.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty vacation reading
Thoroughly entertaining story of a family and the company it built. It doesn't matter that Mr. Cohen never even wonders if his mother bears any responsibility for the family drama he relates--the book is just fun. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written
Those of us who have a story to share should do so, and this story is beautifully written; WHAT REMAINS is a unique one, worth telling, and would be even if it did not involve America's single most famous family. The details Carole Radziwill reveals are intimate, yet never give away more than those connected and still living would find intrusive. At times her pain is almost palpable, and she seems still slightly bewildered about her life and the tragic turn it took during the summer of 1999. The very fact that she did live it and came through it gives her every right to tell about it, and I am glad she chose to do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Moving Memoir Of Love & Death
This is not the memoir of Carole Radziwill. It is a memoir for each person who reads the moving story.
2-0 out of 5 stars In the end, did they have in common besides ABC news?
In one of what appears to be Carole Radizwill's not-so-subtle jabs at her mother-in-law (and at many of the extended family), she implies Lee wondered what exactly her son saw in Carole ... something along the lines of "how much do they have in common beides ABC?"After finishing this book, I have to say I have no idea what, if anything, they did have in common, nor, more importantly, what it was that first caused them to fall in love. While I can understand and appreciate the author's reservations about revealing too much of their personal relationship, I think she fails to convey why they even had any relationship in the first place. As has been commented on by many reveiwers, she sounds much more passionate when she writes of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (again, not in a lesbian way, but in an idealized school-girl crush way).I found myself wondering if they really were as close as Carole portrays, or if this book is a rather sad attempt to publicly attach herself to Carolyn forever. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Leaves you wanting more....
This book is such a page-turner that at 3am I had to force myself to stop.It is a wonderful memoir about her growing up and her various media jobs.I enjoyed the sections on her family as much if not more than the sections on her interviews with stars, musicians, etc.I appreciated that it was not a tell-all or flaunting the witnessing of the seedy side of the celebrity lifestyles. It was simply written to engage the reader with the warmer side of those covered in Rolling Stone, US Weekly, etc. and to see how the girl-next-door gets caught up in the party til dawn lifestyle and yet she was broke the downward spiral to return back to herself. In spite of that, this is not a depressing book, rather an very fun and fast ride.If you want something that shows you the real side of stars you've grown up with but can do without the vulgar language, sexual exploits, sensationalism and dirty laundry then this is the book for you!I sincerely hope there is a sequel!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable!
In "But Enough About Me: A Jersey Girl's Unlikely Adventures Among the Absurdly Famous," Jancee Dunn wrote about how it was for her to work as a reporter/columnist for Rolling Stones magazine, where her biggest responsibility was to interview famous celebrities. The book read like a memoir of her growing her in New Jersey, never finishing college and somehow landed a job in Rolling Stones. She also chronicled her career from then on and besides writing about her career, she also provided details about her love life (or sometimes the lack of it).
4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant and irreverant memoir
Let me state upfront that I had never heard about Jancee Dunn before, but when I saw this book, and reading the inside flap teaser about her writing for Rolling Stone and other magazines, I just couldn't resist picking it up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Long read, worthwhile in many places
This is a long book and I am at the last chapter now. The stories were very interesting. I am giving it a 3-star. The names of everyone was hard to keep up with, but they were characters in the stories. I enjoyed so much to hear more than anything one thing: That rewards & recognition & advancement in GE are results-oriented. The intolerance of Jack for bureacracy was refreshing. The move to six-sigma and quality was aligned with what I hoped would result with good execution. Great insights from a great leader, and a life filled with exciting stories from the seat of a CEO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for managers and business people even though I'm not one of them
As a testament to my ignorance, I picked up this book without knowing who the author was. I learned pretty quickly about Jack Welch and his time as an engineer, manager, and then CEO of General Electric.

5-0 out of 5 stars a reader from Louisiana
This is a fantastic book about World War II. At times I felt like I was right there with the men of the 87th who fought their way across Europe. The book is full of history, but more importantly it is full of the stories of the men who fought the war. It tells you their story and you can't help but get caught up in this great tale. Michael Connelly is a master story teller.
2-0 out of 5 stars A really greaat subject told very badly

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing historical account
Dick Sebian, a member of the 87th, lent me his personal copy of this book.Dick is 81 years old now and remembers details and dates like they happened last week.I would imagine that if you had actually lived through this like he has, you would never forget it.He is a great guy and one would never know what he went through at such a young age.

Editorial Review

To read the latest Trump tale is to be reminded of writer Fran Lebowitz' comment that there are only two social classes in America--the celebrities and the audience. Business biographer Robert Slater, who spent 100 hours with Donald Trump, provides an intriguing link between the two in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
This admiring biography of real estate billionaire Donald Trump begins with a reference to Trump's "swept-back blonde mane" - although his thinning forward comb-over is probably the most famous weird hairdo in America. Perhaps author Robert Slater picked up a bit of his subject's tendency toward what Trump calls "truthful hyperbole." Slater's writing is interesting and accessible, in a breathless sort of way. However, despite being based on 150 interviews, this biography doesn't contain a lot of information that Trump has not already disseminated through his books, TV show and softball press interviews. Slater seems to regard Trump's exaggerations as charming foibles and, given tremendous access, apparently accepts Trump's self-assessment that he is a skilled negotiator, shrewd investor and efficient administrator - even when the author's own anecdotes show Trump in another guise: as a bullying micro-manager. Of course, the insight that negative publicity isn't always a bad thing is a primary theme. We recommend this close-up meeting with Trump to general readers who find that his outsized ego, lifestyle and accomplishments hold a certain fascination and to businesspeople who just want to know how he always lands on his feet. (Hint: he delivers the goods.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Showman, Showoff Or Sage?
If you are interested in the business world or not, there has been no other business leader consistently in the news more then Donald Trump over the last 20 years. If you think he is an attention starved ego driven showman or just a smart business leader in the right place at the right time, the fact is you have an opinion of him.Few other business leaders share his celebrity. It is this celebrity that prompted me to pick up this book for no other reason then to see what all the fuss was about. As a bit of a perspective to this review I have not watched one episode of his TV show and I have always felt that his biggest skill was an uncanny knack for finding television cameras. If you mentioned Trump to me the only thing I would think was oversized ego.
5-0 out of 5 stars Trumping the Business World with "Truthful Hyperbole"
I have read and reviewed many of Slater's previous books and consider him to be among the most perceptive and eloquent commentators on the contemporary business world. It came as no surprise, therefore, that Trump agreed to cooperate with Slater on the writing of this book but only after checking him out with those who had already had a close working relationship with him, notably Jack Welch. There is probably no other executive who has a tighter schedule than does Trump. However, on numerous occasions, beginning in June of 2004, he agreed to meet with Slater or talk with him on the telephone. Trump also arranged for Slater to attend various private meetings related to Trump's building projects; to travel with him to a building site in Manhattan and observe his inspection of it; to journey with Trump for a book promotion appearance at QVC, the shopping channel; and to fly with him on his jet to a "demolition party" in Chicago where Trump planned to build a 90-story $800-million luxury tower on what had been the site of the Chicago Sun-Times. Slater was also allowed to observe a casting call for the third season of The Apprentice television program at during the filming of one of the episodes for its third season. Finally, Trump helped to facilitate many of the interviews of those best qualified to discuss both his business career and the celebrity synonymous with it.
