4-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched Portrait of a Ground-breaking Entertainer
Before Ellen DeGeneres, there was kd lang and Melissa Etheridge who were the most famous "Out" entertainers. This is the only comprehensive biography of kd lang to date. It was published 10 years ago, so it is not current, but it is an excellent, detailed biography, nonetheless. Starr traces Lang's history starting with her childhood, her teenage years, and her struggle to break into the music business. Talented but strongly individualistic and proudly Out, it is not surprising "the Old Boy's Network" in Nashville boycotted lang and her "country punk" music, even though she had great songs, a tremendous voice and a huge fan base. Of course, kd did nothing to endear herself to the country radio DJ's or to the powers-that-be, which is unfortunate.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all my sisters in St. Louis

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating life journey
This is a fascinating book. Tara Singh is an interesting individual with a strong belief system. The book describes this man's life journey. He has included his life in the Punjab, being brought up by a very harsh father, his travails serving in the Indian Army and the challenges that he faced. In so doing he presents a history of the Punjab over a number of decades, all presented through one man's personal experiences. These included suffering from illnesses with no money for getting treatment; and having to transport his pregnant wife from West Punjab to East Punjab during the partition of India. He proceeds to tell about his times in Canada which are equally fascinating. My parents emigrated to England in the 1960s so I empathized with Tara Singh immensely. However, the true character of the man comes out in the book. It is well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The reality of hardship
The Four Quarters of the Night is a creatively scripted bibliography of an immigrant Sikh facing many hardships.Tara Singh Bains takes the reader into a timecapsule to the racial era of the 50's and 60's.In this unbias book we see how Mr.Bains dealt with having to leave behind his wife and little children in India while trying to makea living in Canada.Living with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr.Bains takes the reader through a journey of juggling several manual labour jobs to survive and how he kept his religious faith alive when faced against the pressures of trying to "fit in."Mr. Bains kept his religious spirit alive by praying and turning spritual.I was so engulfed in Mr. Bains' journey of life, I could barely put the book down.It is definately something all immigrants should read. And all those who don't know the dept of the hardships of immigrants.A book well done! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This book is a gem.It is published by an obscure publisher, and is a diamond in the rough. The author must be a remarkable person. He ends up becoming a psychiatrist, and it shows:his memoir is written with compassion and insight. It is one of the best medical memoirs I've ever read (I read a lot!)The book was full of substance (sometimes these memoirs are very light, and can be read in a couple of hours. Not this book.)But I have to emphasize that I thought it was a page-turner and I could *not* put it down. I don't usually write reviews but took the time to do so for this book because I thought it was so extraordinary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
Country Doctor is a great read. It's fun, interesting, and fast reading. It tells about life in frigid Canada when times were tough (snow blowing in under the door!).Ben tells of himself and others in a way that comes across as truthful--the good and the bad. It's a bit like All Creatures Great and Small in a completely different setting and the multiple stories surround Ben's growing from a kid through adulthood in medical school and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars pioneer of public health in addition to country doctor
Many people do not know that Dr Dlin in addition to his abilities as a doctor, veternarian, dentist etc. was perhaps an unwitting pioneer in the area of "Public Health Crisis Management". The complete story is detailed in the book about a health crisis that threateded to wipe out an amimal (instead of human) community. Dr. Dlin's intervention pre-saged the operations of the modern day M.A.S.H unit -or better, (I'm not sure of the exact name) National Health - Contageous Disease (CDC? - in Atlanta) Center's emergency protocols that have only been in existance for perhaps the last 30 years or so. To whit: Isolation and triage of the sick; team approach (in this case he drafted the local community); assembly line (lined up the animals in rows - each with a nurse/caretaker); got people to bring commercial oxygen cylinders from throughout the community (most farmers had oxygen tanks for welding); Dr.Dlin brought anitbiotics, face masks and other emergency materials in bulk from the local (clinic/hospital?). Then, training everyone in the necessary emergency procedures andbuilding bonfires all around the "operating theatre" for both heat and light through the night (no electric lights then) brought the whole herd thru the crsis losing only the animals who were already dead before Dr. Dlin's intervention - quite simply, as remarkable a "generalship" as any war story I've ever read. There are many other lessons in the book which I feel every medical student in the country would do well to learn - plus these stories are fascinating to the laynan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fort Langley Journals, 1827-30
I discovered this book while researching my family history. The bulk of it is daily entries by me who lived and worked at Fort Langley between 1827 and 1830.Fort Langley, constructed over the summer of 1827, was built for trading not military purposes, and was the first such construction on the Fraser River in what would become, in Nov 1858, British Columbia. If your family history has roots in the West Coast fur trade era, it is a valuable source of what life was like for those ancestors. Most of the fort's employees between 1827 and 1830 are mentioned by name in the assorted journals presented in this book.
