5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for my MBA Intl. Business class
Do you ever find yourself in a large bookstore overwhelmed by the sheer number of titles, and wonder how so many new ideas continue to emerge in such mass quantity? Well, this is one of those books that keep us returning to bookstores with faith in the fact that we will not always leave disappointed! This book is unique in its perspective on a subject I am interested in as a professor of international business (Zicklin School of Business; Baruch College, City University of New York) - cross cultural understanding. Written in a pen indicative of ample experience in Japan's corporate world, yet from an outside Western perspective, it reveals nuances of Japanese business culture that only an expatriate can easily discern. "No Elbow Room" is blunt to a pain yet carefully objective and fair in its expos of little known tidbits of Japanese culture and business protocol outside of the Island nation itself. Yet while set in Japan, I found myself easily adapting lessons learned to virtually any cross-cultural setting, prompting me to list this book as required reading in my "Foreign Markets, Cultures, Regimes" class. This is a self-authored text, that no doubt a large publishing house will soon discover and market to the masses. The book is short (179 pages) and a quick yet informative read. I recommend it for not just international business scholars, but as an aid for sociology class discussions, gender-relations discussions, for anyone interested in international relations, and particularly for anyone wishing to travel to Japan, particularly from the West. And if you think you're well traveled and immune to culture shock, you must pick up this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trip into the Culture of Sameness
No Elbow Room is a quick and informative read into the Cultural mind set ofJapanese relationships. It opens up for examinationa world of contradictingcorrectness andsheds light on some of my own experiences in Japan. You will read it from cover to cover enjoying the wonderful illustrations and lighthearted humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Northern Woods Canoeists
There's really only two things worth doing in Minnesota: One, canoeing the Boundary Waters/Quetico during Spring, Summer, and Fall; Two, THINKING about canoeing the Boundary Waters/Quetico during Winter. For the latter, this book is the gateway to paradise.Sevareid and Port have the true spirit of adventurers, the love-bug for the North Woods and her bevy of streams, rivers, and lakes, and Sevareid effectively tells his now-classic tale of how he and his friend drank deeply of all her treasures--complete with the axiomatic mistakes, mishaps, surfiet of discomfitures, and, alas, irresistible beauty that she provides to all who avail themselves of her wonders.Like St. Augustine, let us "Take up and read."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Insanity and Necessity of Adventure
Walter Port and (Arnold) Eric Sevareid took an amazing trip that they started by skipping some of their high school finals so they could get the boat they could afford. Though the project appeared to have been Port's pet, it was Sevareid who came up with the way to fund it: writing about it for the Minneapolis Star. It was clear that once the project began both of them were truly enthralled by it and could not be put off. The tale is told simply, but with a clear affection for all of the people who helped them try to reach their goal, even though few of the people who helped were confident that these young men could make it or were even very encouraging.
4-0 out of 5 stars canoeing with the cree
I thought that this book was a great wiild life adventure. It's about two boys going aginst their odds in a canoeing trip from St. Paul Minneapolis all the way to the Hudson Bay. Nobody thinks that they will make it. The two young boys come close to death many times. They almost get lost and find their way thanks to many kind people that help them overcome the impossible and they make it. They encounter Indians and some very nice people, and this makes their trip much easier even though they really struggle through all those miles. That's why I think this book was a good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOMEN MAKE GREAT SAILORS TOO!
GETTING STARTED and the UPS and DOWNS of the cruising life is what best sums up this WONDERFUL book by Suzanne Giesemann. I HIGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE contemplating the cruising life. This book is a MUST READ. Here's why:
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book and very personal
I was given the book "Living a Dream" by my sister-in-law, Denise Zachar, wife and widow of Frank, my dear brother.Suzanne dedicated the book to her husband Ty and Frank and Dee "for showing us the way" and she personally signed it for me.Not only is it very well written and exciting reading, but for me there was so much more personal meaning, since Frank and Dee had been living a dream for fourteen years. For all of those years, I followed them mentally through visits, phone calls, letters, and e-mails; I was their personal postmaster, did some of their banking, even helped sell a home that they had bought along the way, when they realized they would never leave the waters.Ty & Suzanne's trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland paralleled in time Frank and Dee's last journey together. When Ty and Suzanne returned to Annapolis, they met up with Dee once again and were told that Frank had passed away in Portland, Maine. This book would be good reading for almost anyone, seafarer or landlubber, but no one will shed as many tears as I have throughout the entire book.Thank you, Suzanne.
5-0 out of 5 stars Living a Dream
My husband and I interested in learning more about the cruising lifestyle. When I heard Suzanne give a lecture for women sailors, I was immediately captivated. She's warm and friendly in person, so it was easy for me to quickly become engrossed in the book. I must admit, I could'nt put it down. I've read books by other cruisers before, but this was the most enjoyable by far. Suzanne is a talented writer...she has a way of helping the reader to feel as though he/she is experiencing the adventures first hand. I was pleased to see that she included a glossary for those of us who may not be completely familiar with nautical terms. I would highly recommend this book not only tosailors, but to anyone with an adventurous spirit. This book won't disapoint!

Editorial Review

Bob Buck may not be as famous as Charles Lindbergh, but he's well known among aviators for setting flight-distance records in the 1930s, flying a B-17 in the Second World War, and finally, becoming a commercial airline pilot who logged more than 2,000 trips across the Atlantic Ocean. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better pilot than writer
No doubt Bob Buck had one of the more interesting flying lives: beginning in the 1920s and '30s, through WWII, and on to modern jets. But something about his writing style leaves me wanting more and never getting it.It's not just his occasional grammatical errors (mixing tenses, for instance); I fault his editor for those annoyances.Rather, it's his inability to fully convey the emotions of the dramatic moments he experienced. He describes events in somewhat detached tones and pale colors, concentrating more on facts and a textbook-like history, never really revealing his deeper thoughts about anything.Maybe he never had any?Being introspective myself, I prefer the Ernest K. Gann or Len Morgan or Gordon Baxter style. If you have all of their collections and want still more flying stories, then get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Story
In spite of a somewhat slow start, the story quickly improves and becomes an incredible account from the early days of commercial aviation, where you read about the author becoming a TWA captain flying DC-2s and DC-3s, through his retirement in the 1970s where he flew 747s across the Atlantic.5-0 out of 5 stars An unknown Aviation Legend
North Star Over my shoulder was an interesting look at the life of a pilot who was along for the ride throughout modern aviation history. As a pilot, I enjoyed Capt. Buck's stories spanning from the early open cockpit days to his international flights as the first TWA 747 Captain. This book offers insight to the history of aviation and how it has changed since Capt. Buck started flying. A very entertaining book with a historical flair. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Detailed Stories....makes ya wanna be there!
I enjoyed the stories in this book. They were well written and quite descriptive. Two of the eight stories took place in the 1900's; the rest were older (that's my only gripe).

4-0 out of 5 stars hard to put down such compelling and entertaining stories
any failings in literary grace are more than compensated with simmon's ability to ferret out tale after fascinating tale.a great book for vacation reading, to redefine the meaning of a bad day, to put the mind insome unusual places.absolutely gauranteed to liven up the dinnerconversation, this one goes straight to my 'favorite-book shelf forguests'in the dacha. if you like it, also take a look at Lansing's'Endurance.'

4-0 out of 5 stars castaways encapsulated
Simmons gives us brief vignetttes of what real castaways endured - not always a pretty, tropical island picture. This is at the same time the book's strength and weakness. The shortish accounts allow him to cover alot of ground (geographically and temporally), but they often left mehungry for more detail.Still, all in all, I would recommend it to anyoneelse out therewho enjoyed "Robinson Crusoe," or simply readingabout the ocean. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Last of the Donkey Pilgrims - Last of a Dying Breed
Kevin O'Hara's epic 1800 mile journey around Ireland with a donkey is an amazing depiction of Irish culture, humor, historical pain, and generosity.Completing the book 25 years after his journey in 1979, O'Hara paints a detailed mosaic of an Ireland before the infusion of European Union money and a fragile peace accord that has halted the violence between North and South. With only a few pounds in his pocket, this American Irishman discovers his roots, his heritage, and bit of the Blarney during his trek around Ireland (albeit counterclockwise!) An extraordinary read!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ass-backwards" on a "personal Acid Trip"
Titles described as "heartwarming" are not the type of book I usually read about Ireland, but the enthusiastic responses here drew me in. The beginning, honestly, was so full of blarney and begorras that I thought I'd never get past the first forty or so pages. It picks up awkwardly as if unsure of itself--I don't know if this is intentional or not, but it should not put you off. Luckily, the writing settles down as the pace of Missie and Kevin adjusts to their daily perambulations. It's a worthwhile travelogue from 1979, 150 nights spent in barns and farmhouses relying upon local kindness, and a thoughtful look at a nearly vanished, if much poorer, Ireland that nobody today--as the preface acknowledges 25 years later--could have believed would have slipped away. With slower traffic, stagnant villages, and loquacious pub chat, O'Hara recorded these now faded scenes in his diaries and recreates on the page over subsequent decades of what evidently was a long labor of love.
5-0 out of 5 stars Last of the Donkey Pilgrims
Being married to an Irishman I've been on a quest to read as much up on the country as possible. This was my latest read - wonderful, amusing, I could relate so well to the accents, expressions - laughing out loud on the NYC subway! If you love Ireland, it's people - this is a great book. Loved the ending with Missie talking about the years following the trip. So glad that Kevin finally got it down on paper. Bravo! I wish him much success with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Twain's "before and after" account of his quarter-century on the Old Muddy
Twain's account of his years on the Mississippi is part travel book, part memoir, and part historical work, with a few sketches, stories, and tall tales tossed in for good measure. There is even an outtake from the not-yet-published "Huckleberry Finn," along with extensive excerpts from historical and contemporary accounts by other authors. This smorgasbord of material makes for an uneven book, but much of it shows Mark Twain at his humorous and humanistic best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Narrative of Life on the River
Mark Twain (1835-1910) grew up along the banks of the Mississippi River, and he captures the feel of the mighty river during the steamboat era in this superb narrative and memoir.I particularly liked the earlier chapters, as Twain describes his youthful tutelage as an aspiring steamboat pilot in the years before the Civil War.Readers see what it was like guiding a steamboat over a river full of dangerous snags and sandbars - in clear daylight, through thick fog, and on moonless nights. The author then jumps ahead to his middle age - describing life along the river and in the South after the Civil War, and including politics, epidemics, and the supplanting of steamboats by railroads. The book's second half lacks a bit of the magic found earlier, but remains eminently readable and informative. This is a remarkable narrative by a great writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Twain at his best!
I've been reading a lot of classic literature recently, and I also recently saw the Mississippi River for the first time...so this book seemed liked the perfect one for me to read right now.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cure for Leftist Lunacy Concerning Islam
About this book, Daniel Pipes wrote: In her mid-40s, a successful executive just placed in charge of Xerox's Color Solutions Business Unit, Quin had a taste for exotic travel that took her in late 1998 to Yemen with a group of eighteen other Western tourists. She and they had the misfortune to have their Land Cruisers driven directly into a war between the government and an Islamist outfit called the Aden Abyan Islamic Army (AAIA). The entire tourist group was taken hostage on December 28 and held for more than a day before Yemeni military forces attacked the AAIA, leading to the deaths of four tourists, two terrorists, and one soldier. Quin herself had a close brush with death, but the terrorist holding the gun in her back was hit before he could do damage to her; in an act of daring-do, she managed to pull from his still-live hands his AK-47, an act which left her a changed person. (The mild-mannered, liberal feminist admits that as she exultantly fought for the gun, she had a revelation: "So this is why men like war.")
4-0 out of 5 stars How life changes in one AK-47 moment.
Quin has an appealing writing style and writes on issues of great import. They say you should write what you know, and write real characters.Quin does both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyman's Guide
Let's be perfectly honest with ourselves, here, folks. Deep down, we are all Tim Cahill - slightly pudgy, kind of geeky, and always a fish out of water when we travel. Not a single one of us can go anywhere in this world and immediately blend in, feel comfortable, look natural. It's impossible and while some of like to pretend that we are jet-setters, globe-trotters, and travel afficianados, the fact of the matter is that we're usually ignorant of the cultures we visit, the places we see, and the historical importance of the lands we visit. There's nothing wrong with that and Mr. Cahill proves that our ignorance can lead to enlightenment, adventure, and humor - albeit at our own expense.5-0 out of 5 stars Out Looking for Trouble
This is not a quest for enlightenment, as the title says. Tim Cahill doesn't bore you with touristy descriptions of scenery and high culture that you get from the more button-down travel writers, but diaries of everything that goes wrong with world travel. In Cahill's case this can range from the comical to the disgusting to the downright dangerous. He's not a comedy writer, as some think, but uses humor effectively at key points in his writing to drive his accumulated insights home. Otherwise he is very perceptive and even serious when the situation demands it. This is a loose collection of essays from locations ranging from remote and dangerous third-world hellholes to American commercial adventure destinations. The writings are delivered with a lot of humble pie, which is Cahill's secret weapon. A funny example is when he compares himself to a platypus: "so strange, so different from the rest, so inherently dorky as to be unclassifiable by science." I can identify with that. Some winning essays here, among many, include a trip to a town in Ecuador on the verge of demolition by a volcano, and examinations of the true personalities of gorillas and dolphins. Another winning collection from Cahill, in which he proves that enlightenment is not the travel writer's friend. [~doomsdayer520~]

4-0 out of 5 stars Travel Adventure With Moral Purpose
Engaging stories that allow readers to have adventures without leaving their easy chair, but that generally contain messages about the wonders of nature and our obligation not to destroy it. There are clear heros and villians in Cahill's world, and his comic quips and foibles notwithsatnding, he makes a good case for what he is so passionate about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!
I found this diary charming and informative. Having always had a fascination with the time period and wagon trains, I couldn't put this book down. By the end of the book, I was saddened by the fact that Sarah didn't continue recording her life in Montana. I felt as if I had known her personally and was touched by the whole accounting of her travels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Depictions of life on the trail
Enhanced with a Foreword by Mary Barmeyer O'Brien, Days On The Road: Crossing The Plains In 1865 is the personal diary of Sarah Raymond Herndon, a young pioneer woman who, as the dust from the Civil War settled, left the battle-scarred state of Missouri with her family and traveled overland to the Rocky Mountains in search of a new place to live and a new life to build. Sarah's daily insights, her depictions of life on the trail, her descriptions of the hardships, the triumphs, and the evocations of her memories, combine to form a vivid and accurate image of pioneer life through the words of a pioneer who headed west to escape the ravages of the American Civil War to start her life anew. Days On The Road is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to 19th Century American Studies reading lists and history collections. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Henry James/Edith Wharton" American Tourist in 20th Century
Read the book; it's an insightful and interesting story of a 20th century upper-middle class American woman in expatriate-tinged Venice. Please appreciate the honesty of her frustrations as well as her delight with Venice and its varied residents. To perceive the story as "mean and ugly" misses the point of the author's story.Weideger carefully notes both her own foibles and those of the many people that she encounters. She accurately captures the personalities of both the "society" expat community and the italian character of the Venetian residents and shopkeepers. Her bluntness distinguishes this book from the many frothy travel tales otherwise published.
2-0 out of 5 stars Venetian nightmares
Venetian Dreaming started out so strong. Weidiger did an admirable job of describing her longing to live in this most enigmatic of cities, and of the many logistical and personal roadblocks she had to overcome to achieve the dream. Then, a bit less than halfway through this engaging story, the dream becomes a nightmare. The author became fixated upon not just living in Venice, but upon living in one particular apartment in one particular palazzo. No matter what. Other reviewers have covered the many flaws that spoil this book at this point. Just another few words on the ending. Talk about leaving the reader hanging! What was that all about? Hope she's OK now. Hard to believe this book got published in its present form.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreams of Venice
I enjoyed "Venetian Dreaming" immensely, Paula took me to Venice with her and I felt a part of this wonderful place.Paula shields us from nothing and portrays the city and the Venetians as she found them, showing them as normal people with their glories and flaws. No, they are not perfect and Venice is not always on its best behaviour but this just shows the many shadows and cracks of its vast history and the human touch that has made this city what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!
This is a delightful book! Larry Kirwan has a wonderful way with the English language. I swear he could write the ingredients in a box of cereal and make it a joy to read. He has a real knack for sharing experiences with a sense of humor and a lack of pretentiousness. I'm buying a second copy to give as a gift- I won't be parting with MY copy (I got it autographed). This book is a great read & and a refreshing, insightful look at modern America and the New York music scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done
I can only speak from the perspective of a fan of Black 47 who saw them a bit in their early years at Paddy's and someone who has most of their music. Green Suede Shoes is an extremely entertaining memoir by Larry Kirwan, the lead singer and driving force behind the band. The book covers his early years as a rocker/rebel/socialist/republican finding himself as a young man Ireland, to his journey to New York where he becomes a musician and playright, and then to the founding of Black 47, the capstone of his musical career. In between there arestories of loves lost, and lots more of alcohol consumed, and lots of colorful characters along the way, including some well known characters in the annals of music and New York City.Kirwan is the real deal:he and his bandmates are committed to their music and their fans, and that bond has made them "New York's House Band" for fifteen years; they respond to requests shouted out, to e-mails sent, and mingle with the crowd after the show. That passion comes across in the book. The story also involves his relationship with his parents and touches on the universal immigrant experience of never being able to go home again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good solid book
The book as a biography, has a solid enough premise and just the right amount of appealing grit to the cover, that I would have picked it up off the book shelves even if I'd never heard of the band, Black47.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY
I'm a Saudi. I was born and raised in SA, and I read this book upon arriving the US to pursue my studies (August 2005). I've found this book very outdated. If you would like to know about modern SA don't read this book. This book doesn't represent SA nowadays. When I was reading this book I thought I was reading about another country! Not the one I'd just came from. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY.

1-0 out of 5 stars I am having trouble getting through chapter 1
I just started this book last night and haven't even made it through the first chapter.I had to check the reviews here to see why I'd even purchased the book in the first place (I buy a lot based on recommendations).I was shocked to see all the positive ratings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Have been in Saudi Arabia-loved the book
I was in Saudi Arabia as a married woman-had no idea it could be so much fun. Genia certainly took chances but obviously had a great time doing it. She lived a life I never would have dared while living in The Kingdom. It is a great adventure-just wished the ending was a little different. Is she setting us up for a sequel? Sure hope so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the best book on hiking the Appalacian trail
As with most really good books, there is more to this story than just the physical journey. It is also the story of a spiritual pilgrimage.Kelly Winters is an excellent writer, and her personal journey of discovery was perfectly balanced with the other aspects of hiking the trail:the physical challenges and dangers, companionship of all kinds of very different people, and the appreciation of nature. If you are going to read one book about the Appalacian Trail, this should be the one.You will feel like you are there with her.

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful
I wrote the following in May 2002 about this book:
5-0 out of 5 stars The real deal
Many AT thru hikers claim that Bill Bryson's A Walk In The Woods inspired them to hike the trail. Personally I don't see how a book written by a man that hiked only small sections of the trail and didn't bond with the trail's culture could do this.
