5-0 out of 5 stars Best Economics Book
If you are looking for an economics book that isn't going to put you to sleep, this is the one.It is complete yet interesting to read.Yes, I said interesting in the same sentence as economics.Arnold uses many real life examples that the average student can relate to and keeps the math to a minimum (there is an appendix for this stuff).By far the best intro to econ books are by Arnold.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely happy customer
book arrived in time for my class to start & was in excellent brand-new condition. would purchase from seller again!

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive yet easily understood by the novice economist
Roger Arnold makes reading of economics similar to reading a good mystery novel. He provides examples of how economics can be found in unexpected places. The models he uses makes analysis of difficult economic principlesinto an accessable tool that any beginning economic student can use. Alsoincluded in the book are internet addresses for students to further theirknowledge of any topic that interests them. In addition, the book conatinsinformation on how to think like an economist, so that the student canbetter understand the world and the events that occur around them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis De-Mystified - Not
The other review on this date (wentraub) is not a book review but some random thoughts on investing. The Dynamic Asset Level Investing model is not even in the book but a paid service from Dorsey's website!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis De-Mystified
Technical analysts are becoming an endangered species on Wall Street. Major firms have long favored a fundamental approach emphasizing a nuts and bolts approach to company revenues, use of capital, and innovation. Scores of fundamental analysts closely follow individual sectors of the economy, scour SEC filings, and comment on daily developments pertaining to individual companies. Meanwhile a smaller cadre of 'technicians' churn out charts, graphs, and statistics that follow the ebb and flow of investor capital. Recently two well known full service brokerage firms decimated their already small contingent of technical analysts and another firm let go their star technician.
2-0 out of 5 stars Bait for online service
The book is too wordy - in fact the same information is more concisely presented and available for free at DWA website. To follow the method described you need to become a paying member of DWA. A free 2 week trail is also available at the site. This allows you to findout that to really understand and apply this method you need to take several of the $150 classes that DWA also provides. Also, the online service is really geared towards stock brokers (investment advisors).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Strategy Process
The authors of "The Strategy Process..", produced a high quality textbook on strategic planning and management. The authors show the complexity of the subject and the need for managers to exercise caution in using prescriptive systems in the highly dynamic, uncertain and complex operating environment. The book avoids taking a simplistic view to the subject but take a realistic approach of presenting various approaches that managers can use depending on their peculiar circumstances. Having grasped the various concepts, leaders of organisations can then use their judgement to come up with appropriate decisions and actions. The book focuses on developing the ability of managers to make informed judgements based on analysis, synthesis, experience and intuition and harnessing the collective skills and expertise of their organisations.
3-0 out of 5 stars decent book
This book is an ok book. The cases are very interesting and they were the best part of the book. The readings in the first half of the book were random at times and generally not that good.Mintzberg has a great grasp of the concepts, but the book does not do well at conveying them.

For novices to org. culture, this book takes you on a thorough journey into the corners of what constitutes an organization's culture. My favorite take-away is that Schein made an abstract concept much more concrete. He creates a nice framework to view org. culture, gives examples continuously and provides many nuggets of knowledge.Plenty of useful references are given as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review on Andragogy and learning theories
The Adult Learner by Malcolm Knowles is a comprehensive and informative book covering various aspects and theories on learning beginning with the roots of andragogy. The reading then progresses through adult learning in human resource development to elaborating how andragogy is applied in practice. Lastly, strategies are introduced to tailor learning to individual differences and to be able to implement adult learning in organizations. I specifically found useful the new perspectives on adragogy that has emerged from research and theory in a variety of disciplines from the learner's need to know working your way through the core principles to motivation to learn. Even though this is definitely a worthy read because of the comprehensiveness of the content it would be more suitable for a reader that already has had some what of a foundation within the adult learning realm.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ADULT LEARNER, SIXTH EDITION
This book was in excellent shape.I received it sooner than I expected.

2-0 out of 5 stars A classic, but it does not use its own advice.
Malcolm S. Knowles is the founder of the theory of Andragogy (Adult Education), and I agree with him on many of the points he makes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Take-Away Told in a Clever Story
I picked up this book at the recommendation that the moral of this book would do me some good -- and it did. The key take-away is woven through a clever story of this short book.I picked it up at the bookstore and read through it in a few hours. It isrecommended for those looking for a reminder to see what's in front of them now (i.e. Don't forget to smell the flowers). However, it is NOT recommended for those looking for an eye-opening revelation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Annoying
I received this item in calendar form from a friend who is into inspirational messages. I am generally not opposed to inspirational messages, but this one gets me. I tear a page off each day to humor her, but don't dare to let her know that the book gets on my nerves.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Present : The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now!
I found "The Present: The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now!" to be a pleasant, easy read. The messages in the book were pretty clear early on (don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read the book), and are good to keep in mind, especially when you might "hit some bumps in the road of life." I'm sure I'll refer back to "The Present : The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now!" whenever I need a reminder of what really are the important things in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Production for everyone
Japan manufacturing revolutionized the automobile industry.Japan transformed the automobile industry by applying ideal perfection conditions of zero defect products, reduced inventories, and the generation of endless product inventories. How did Japan accomplish this breakaway?Lean production is the answer.Lean production allowed the Japanese to reduce human labor by ½, manufacturing production space by ½, capital investment by ½, required engineering hours by ½, and reduced production time by ½. US automobile companies were on the defensive and rather than compete head to head in quality and competitiveness with their Japanese counterparts they sought refuge in the political system.
2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading and dated
This is a fairly poorly researched book, despite the authors' credentials; their history of American automobiles is grossly inaccurate and only serves to reinforce incorrect stereotypes. They spend very little time actually describing lean production, preferring to talk about how every other company will go bankrupt because they don't have it. The misreading of the Volvo story is also rather galling, though to be fair, Volvo's team-based approach was already being dismantled (for non-

For those of you long in the tooth you may recall John Cameron Swayze's love-in with Timex watches where in a 60 second commercial he would submit the watch to behemoth like torture, rodeo riding, outboard motors, and then hold the watch up and say, 'it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.'

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mastermind "Bible"
Bill and Joe have done a wonderful job in this book of explaining what a mastermind is and the many types of masterminds that exist or that you can start to help you "Grow Rich". They cover everything from the history of masterminding, you will be surprised to read how far back it goes and how to start your own mastermind. Some of the key points I loved about the book were how to deal with the dynamics of the different personalities that may exist in a group and how to satisfy their needs. I am looking forward to meeting Joe and Bill and their mastermind group in the near future by qualifying for the promotion they had recently.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for remote sales professionals (among others)
As someone who has been home officed for more than 10 years now, I really appreciated this book. Most of us who have worked in corporate America have participated in mastermind groups (of varying value) internal to our companies - yes, I'm referring to staff meetings, weekly tags, etc.We tend to complain about having to attend these meetings (especially if they are not well run), but then once we are home-officed, we often miss the camaraderie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Common sense is not that common, afterall.
Before going into my review, let's have a glance of the ten building blocks proposed by the author:-
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Useful for Growing Businesses
We recommend this book to all companies dealing with growth. If your business is content with staying small, skip it. Read this book if you are in a growing business or in one that lost its way while it expanded. The final quiz section, where author Jason Jennings walks you through a series of exercises to identify where your business falls in his rubric, is not so impressive. Skim it. Everything else in the book is stunningly useful. Jennings and his staff did a lot of research, including both statistical analysis and first-person interviews. They also reflected seriously on the sorts of businesses they should hold up as models for others to follow. These model businesses operate in fields ranging from fast food (SONIC) to sports outfitting (Cabela's). Some of these enterprises - such as Strayer University, the higher education representative - initially seem too specialized to provide generalizable lessons, but Jennings succeeds in making them relevant. The result is a book that is entertaining and convincing, if not always easy to follow. After all, Jennings wants you to become proficient at business fundamentals, an asset which is, as he notes, both rare and difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Masterful Job telling how it is in the world of the Best
Jason has done it again! If you want to know what the best companies in the world do to be exactly that, THE BEST, this book is a must read. Success leaves clues and Jason has done a masterful job of giving you an inside look at the companies setting the standards for the world of business. There are very few "good" business books and even fewer "great" ones. This one is destined to be of the latter. If you are interested in business, own a business or hope to someday, this book and its wisdom need to be part of your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark Book on How to Think about Competing
"Competitive Strategy" was one of my favorite books when I was studying for an MBA.It continues to be one of my key reference books. It will help you learn how to think about competing.Although the concepts contained are now viewed as common sense, so many people ignore these basics and fail. This is a must read for anyone in business.

Much has been written about Porter in these reviews and elsewhere, so I won't repeat that information.Instead, I will focus on what drew me to this book, and from that, what its strengths and weeknesses are.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't praise this book too highly!
As someone who teaches derivatives to practitioners and in a Masters program, I can't praise this book too highly. It is clear, comprehensive and, most importantly, concentrates on practical applications.I was particularly pleased with the chapter on repo, which is usually underestimated in importance, without requiring a whole, specialist book.

This is certainly a marvellous book to read! In fact, this is my first book from John C Maxwell's collection. 5-0 out of 5 stars The authoritative source on microfinance
I've consulted a number of books on microfinance and found this to be one of the most intelligent, cogent sources of info on the field.Particularly impressive is the clearly written, even handed views on oft debated subjects (e.g. the role of subsidy in microfinance).Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for development economists
Microfinance has become one of the most important mechanisms for the development of informal business in developing economies. As such, it has attracted attention from development practitioners, economists and politicians. Disappointingly, most books on the subject can be best described as infomercials - rarely do they go beyond success stories of happy women in brightly coloured clothes who are now running home enterprises. But practitioners know that there is far more to microfinance than simply providing loans - just as there is far more to development than simply pouring money into a country. There are pitfalls to microfinance: it can crowd out local business, it can catapult poor people further into poverty if incorrectly adminstered, and there are a host of governance issues surrounding it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for practitioners, policymakers and researchers
The first three chapters lay down the causes and characteristics of market failure in the finance context, give economic explation fot them, and describe the history of microfinance.I found Chapters 4 and 5 ("Group Lenging" and "Beyond Group Lending" respectively) extremely useful for applied contract theorists.

3-0 out of 5 stars My Life as a Quant: Reflections on Physics and Finance
One needs to consider what they want out the book before buying it.If your looking for a book with market trading tactics and think this book will provide that, then my score would be a "1"Its not about how to make YOU money and its title implies that.In fact, its title is a quite honest answer to what is inside, the reflections of this Quant on his life in physics and finance. While he does not give the reader any CLEAR suggestions on how to make money in the market, he does give a good view of life as a professional in the hard sciences most of them would find it boring, the book would be a goodfor some super high school achiever that is contemplatingor announced committment to a life as a PHd in hard science. He does do a good job of relating all the "posturing", the "idea stealing", and general BS that is the real world of both science and commerce. His descriptions of his finance modeling efforts and the difficulties does show why many big firms can go bust. But other than messing up your own trading, you have to know when a big firm had bad Quant. So, unless you can think beyond what your reading as to making money in the market and learning to make money is your goal, then pass on this book.I gave it a "3" as it is good at exposing BS. More BS exposure type books may some day help us all.But you won't find specific maket making money ideas in this book, thus no "5"
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting world line
It is very uncommon for scientists to be revealing of their personal lives, and even more rare for them to make written commentary on the people they have interacted with over the span of their careers or even a portion thereof. The author of this book, who began his career as a physicist and then chose to be a financial engineer, is thus a statistical outlier in this regard. His transparency has allowed the reader to gain insight not only into how it is to live, study, and work in academia, but also in the financial world. All personal life histories are subjected to random perturbations, to events and people that are unplanned and unexpected, but as this book clearly shows, with pertinacity, with determination, one can smooth out even the strongest of these perturbations, and trace out a world line that is personally satisfying and dignified.
4-0 out of 5 stars intense modelling in finance
As a Physics PhD who left physics, I read Derman's book with especial interest. He too faced this career choice after getting his doctorate and doing a stint in academia. The book shows the sometimes [often?] intense nature of academia, with emphasis on getting a tenured position. Whereas some industries can offer much higher salaries.
