5-0 out of 5 stars A Quick Guide to Venture Capital Thinking
This book, one claimed by the publisher to fall into the need-to-read category rather than the nice-to-read, is aimed at giving the businessman the information he needs to know to be able to hold an intelligent conversation with a venture capitalist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - But Even Better is Author DVD Called Negotiating Term Sheets & Valuations in VC Deals
This author definitely knows his stuff - but even better is author's new product called Negotiating Term Sheets and Valuations in Venture Capital Deals (ISBN 1597010987).It is a 100 minute DVD that has a lot of different material in it that is critical for doing venture capital deals. It also covers specific negotiation strategies and roles and motivations for each key deal participant - which is not covered in this book or the authors other book (Term Sheets & Valuations).

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
After enjoying his first book, Term Sheets and Valuations, I was looking forward to this one.I regret to say that I found it a big waste of time and a bigger waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
This book is a quick read and addressed the outages in my understanding of how to value companies and structure rounds of funding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check Out Author's DVD as Well - Negotiating Term Sheets
This was a really great resource - but even better is author's new product called Negotiating Term Sheets and Valuations in Venture Capital Deals (ISBN 1597010987).It is a 100 minute DVD that has a lot of different material in it that is critical for term sheets and valuations. It also covers specific negotiation strategies and roles and motivations for each key deal participant - which is not covered in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Term Sheet Analysis and Composition
A great book for understanding term sheets and a much needed book for entrepreneurs, who really do not have many good books to choose from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warwick is a skillful writer
Warwick's writing style is extremely straightforward and clear. It was a pleasure to learn these tips on writing equally straightforward solicitation letters. What differentiates this book from other ones is that it is up-to-date and remains relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Non-Profit Should Have This Book
Fundraising is a very specialized area of copywriting and marketing. Unlike the more common direct mail letter wherein you are selling a product or service, fundraising often offers nothing more to the receipient than a chance to feel good about doing good.5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind ...
There are many many books and courses on how to write a funding proposal but few out there on how to write and develop your organization's annual campaign. Fortunately Mal Warwick's is the only book you'll ever need. Thorough, loaded with examples, not only of solicitation letters but follow up and thank you letters as well -- if you're a development professional this is one book you must have on your shelf. Using Mal Warwick's books and website, along with a great deal of marketing reading, I successfully redesigned my organization's membership campaign - raising our overall donations by 33% the first year and an additional 25% the second year.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT read, easily digestible
Jerold Panas has done it again, with a deeply insightful, yet infinitely practical little volume. Just about every page contains an applicable nugget of wisdom in the exciting quest to develop a dynamic volunteer board. Get this book -- it's a quick read, but one that is likely to change your outlook and energize your organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Habits Worth Cultivating
Previously, when we were planning our major gifts campaign, I used Panas' book, ASKING, to motivate my board. It did the trick. Figuring lightning might strike twice, I recently gave them a copy of FUNDRAISING HABITS. They liked it just as much. And they're in the early stages of modeling some of the behaviors Panas outlines. Definitely if you have a board that needs a fundraising "pump up", this book may help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Jerry Panas has written a book all of us in philanthropy will want to give to every member of our boards. How often during my twenty-five years of fundraising I have said:"Oh, what I wouldn't give for a stronger board!" What I was really saying was "I wish my board members would give our organization more financial support." And, time and again, I have made the excuse for our board members that they were not chosen because of their philanthropic generosity, but because of their area of expertise.Panas will never let us get away with this excuse again! He raises the bar both for philanthropy staff and for board members with "24 Fundraising Habits" that will change, for the better, our ability to develop effective board members and raise financial support for our organization's mission. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched and nicely executed
Like many in the Jossey Bass series, Tempel's work is thorough and well-written, covering all important aspects of fundraising. A great introductory guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the fundraising professional!
Whether you've been in the fundraising profession for 10 minutes or 10 years, do yourself a favour and read this book. It will make you proud to be part of the tradition of philanthropy. It will inspire and guide you. You will see yourself and the volunteers and donors you work with in a whole new light. Don't put it in your library. Keep it on your desk. The first time you read it, and you will read it joyfully from cover to cover, keep pen and paper handy. You will find yourself making a list of things you need and want to do. Achieving Excellence in Fundraising is thoughtful and thought-provoking. It is the place where the theory, practice, philosophy and spirituality of a great tradition meet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for the Golden Gate Chapter of AFP Newsletter
On my fundraising shelf stood just two books and a binder: "Designs for Fundraising" by Harold Seymour 1966; "The Raising of Money" by James Gregory Lord 1987, and my collected monthly newsletters of tips from Taft. Not a lot to go on, but Seymour's classic helped me enormously, imparting such nuggets as, "At best, with few exceptions, people don't pay close or careful attention to anything."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awarded $250,000 Federal grant because of this book!
I was working at a NON-PROFIT organization and the departing Executive Director refused to submit a renewed grant request to a Federal agency.I was tasked to do it instead within one week.I had no support of the staff or Board of Directors because they did not have a clue of the process.I had never written a grant. So, I purchased this book and read it over the weekend. It was easy to read and made sense.I simply followed the book...identified a problem/an unmet need and a way to solve it.Thank you! The agency was awarded $250,000 to fund two of the full-time employees over a 2 year period.

5-0 out of 5 stars The personal side of fundraising
Burnett skillfully shows how to satisfy "the bottom line" through a positive relationship with donors. Practical, relevant tips are offered for reaching out to potential donors and making them feel part of the mission. It's a pleasure to see someone writing about "the psychology of fundraising." A well-crafted, beneficial read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
Ken Burnett is one of the world's great, and most respected, fundraisers, and this is one of the most important fundraising books you'll ever read. Relationship Fundraiisng is on every top 10 list I've ever seen. And it deserves to be. Most non-profits do not treat their donors well, and therefore raise less income than they could. When you follow Ken's advice you will raise more money for your mission.I know Ken personally and while I've raised many tens of millions for non-profits, and have been fundraising for 25 years, every time I hear Ken speak, or read his books and articles, I learn something new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relationship Fundraising Should Be Part of What We All Do
Many of us know that it's more important then ever to build relationships with our donors and prospects.Ken Burnett has been talking about it for over 10 years and the newest edition of his book on Relationship Fundraising is even more relevant today than when it was first written.Ken skillfully uses his extensive experience and insight to focus on what it really is all about through both what has already worked elsewhere and what we should strive to achieve. This book is easy and enjoyable to read and supports our ambitions for techniques including donor development and moves management but it is so much more than that.Relationship Fundraising takes lessons from yesterday and gives you the inspiration to truly get back to people and build positive lasting relationships into the future. Each of us can benefit from going beyond the buzz words and see what it is really all about or at least re-establish the importance of Relationship Fundraising by reading this invaluable book.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars False review
I've noticed same comment made (almost word by word) to the previous book of Gladstone (Venture Capital Handbook) meaning that they're not reviews at all but sheer PR or advertisement to sell books. I didn't buy both of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars VC Investing Basics
Much updated from previous editions, David Gladstone's useful text provides a very cursory survey of deal and investment techniques, albeit for slightly later than "sexy" stage deals. However, as this book is designed for the novice, and as Lipper's text has fallen out of print, this sadly remains the only general text on VC investing for the inexperienced, and is useful in context of the level which it is designed to educate. While the many checklists may be somewhat annoying to seasoned VCs, they are probably indispensable to the novice investor, since they provide a summary framework when working through deal and business terms. And while the book is designed more for later stage (through certainly not LATE stage, as some have alluded to) deals, the book is, again, designed to educate the novice venture investor, who really shouldn't be doing high tech start-ups anyway. Irrespective of that, anyone who presumes to write a text on investing in high tech start ups would likely find his text applicable only for the next few months after printing. Ours is an industry that evolves very quickly, and changes rapidly in accordance to the latest trends. No one can teach you how to pick the winners in the trend that hasn't happened yet. Getting the basics from a text like Gladstone's, however, can give you the fundamentals on which to build that "knack".

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
This book is a thorough, practical guide to the nitty-gritty of venture capital investing. This comprehensive, well-organized instruction manual summarizes the homework you should do before you make a venture capital investment, the paperwork needed to carry out the investment and the ongoing work you will have to undertake to have a prayer of seeing your investment pay off. If it is a little plodding, you can understand why. It covers a lot of ground. The authors compare venture capital investing to a partnership at one point, to a marriage at another. They don't attempt to sell you on venture investing. In fact, by telling you how difficult and labor intensive it is, they may even drive you away. We believe this book definitely belongs in the library of anyone who has ever taken a serious interest in venture investing. It will also help entrepreneurs who need venture capital financing by showing them how to evaluate their companies according to the criteria that serious investors are apt to use. ... Read more

You've got a hot idea for a new dot-com, and you're itching to join the folks who regularly show up on CNBC and at the Lexus dealerships in Silicon Valley. But you also know your odds of big-time success are about as long as Bill Gates's position in MSFT. What do you do? 5-0 out of 5 stars Start Up Business Bible
I lead the technology center for an up and coming online payment services company. To say that High Tech Start Up has been very helpful in our growth is truly an understatement. My boss lugs around his copy of the book and constantly quotes from it, calling it his bible. The book has guided him in positioning the company in the market accordingly and has helped him in making informed decisions. I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to carve a niche in the high tech industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, I highly recommend it.
I bought this book in early 2001 at the advice of a friend of mine who was working at a VC firm on Sand Hill Road.I have found it to be an invaluable reference over the years, and have recommended it to many friends.I also found the "Resources for Entrepreneur" section and VC discussions very helpful.Mr. Nesheim also provides an updated list of references, resources, and other recommended books on his website. If you are interested in starting a high-tech company, read High Tech Start Up and all the other books he recommends. If you read High Tech Start Up first, then the Clayton Christensen books, the Ries and Trout books, "Building Strong Brands" by David Aaker, the Geoffrey Moore books, and "The Secrets of Word of Mouth Marketing" by Silverman, you will see how it all dovetails nicely. There is much more to this business than just great ideas.

3-0 out of 5 stars generally good information, but misleading..
I took Nesheim's course at my school. I feel like the book is there mainly for him to make money off the students. I don't know if the business book genre is all like this, but the font is double spaced and large. You could shrink it to 120 pages and make it paperback since the book isn't worth the suggested $50.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Like the Portable Associates Degree in Entrepreneurship
The problem with this book is that it was written as a textbook with very little practal advice and no real "know-how" methods.Similar to virtually all business books written by professors for colleges, this book falls very short in equipping would-be entrepreneurs with the insight, skills, and know-how needed to become successful entrepreneurs.I would not waste your money on this book at any price.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference and overview of Entrepreneurship
As an undergraduate, I studied political science; as a graduate student, I studied history (among other things) - however, few if any of my classes ever dealt with the actual mechanics of business, despite dealing with business in a more general sense (as it would fit in the context of history and politics).I decided that it was important to learn some of the basic concepts of business administration, and the Portable MBA series by John Wiley & Sons publishers fit the bill.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
The Bad - Like all of the Portable MBA series, the book provides a limited and somewhat superficial coverage of the topic. It will not replace a good entreprenuerial course in an excellent MBA program. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Guide for Plannind Major Gift Campaigns
In the short time I've had this book, I've used it extensivly to plan a forthcoming $25 million campaign in a college within a university. After 15 years of experience in major gift fund raising, I've finally found the book that includes ALMOST everything we need to launch a very successful effort. I deeply appreciate Mr. Dove's efforts to update his work and provide this useful guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but disappointing
Although there is useful information in this book, I found it disappointing compared with the recommendations that I read. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A needed tool for anyone thinking about a campaign
Bancel lays out the information an aorganization needs in order to have a successful campaign. Before the case statement, before the quiest phase, even before the vote to have a campaign, Bancel focuses on the people, donors, staff and budget you need.5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for fundraisers
Ms. Bancel does an amazing job of leading the novice -- or even the not-so-novice -- fundraiser through a step-by-step process of preparing for that daunting event that every successful non-profit must eventually face: the capital campaign.Few books of this type are as pragmatic, and none have the carefully crafted, detailed "how-to" advice that Ms. Bancel provides... ... Editorial Review

According to Robert J. Robinson and Mark van Osnabrugge, so-called business angels--those generally unheralded private investors who usually specialize in high-growth fields and often involve themselves directly in the endeavors they fund--now provide 30 to 40 times more financing each year than their more famous counterparts, venture capitalists. 5-0 out of 5 stars more than a Guide
I am the Founder & CEO of a business that within the next 8 to 12 months was seeking to raise between $2M and $5M to fund our expansion. I always thought of going straight to Venture Capital firms or Private Equity divisons of Invmt Banks that I have already been in touch with. This book, Angel Investing, was a truly priceless read to me. The education delivered by authors has helped me re-strategize my approach to inviting external investors and also the amount that I should try to raise and the schedule of funds. What I thought was most helpful was the detailed comparisons between Angel Investors and Venture Capitalist, as well as understanding the psychology behind their thinking and how an entrepreneur seeking outside funds should try to prepare every aspect of their presentation (themselves, their product and overall business plan). The book has given me tools to have most questions covered and more importantly has prepared me to become an angel myself in the years ahead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book starts off slowly but when it gets rolling it is very helpful ,giving good infromation where and when you need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good guide for entrepreneurs who need funding
If you are planning to go after Angel funding, this book is a must-read. The book contains interviews with a broad spectrum of Angels, who discuss their investment experience, the thinking they go through, and key things they look for, when evaluating an opportunity. This book would serve as an excellent reference for anyone preparing to be in front of Angels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fundraising book for the small nonprofit, or one that is not well organized!
This is a great book for the small nonprofit that does not know much about fundraising. If it were for a more established nonprofit, then it would not have referred to major gifts as those starting at $500. I'm used to major gifts starting at $10,000 and going up well into the 6 figures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Simple Explanations of What Works
There are a tremendous number of non-profits around. There are also a tremendous number of funding organizations. Your job as the fundraising manager (whatever your exact job title may be) is to put your particular non-profit together with one or more funding organizations to raise the money you need.
