5-0 out of 5 stars If you own a business, you need to listen to this CD - Several times,
Period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Empathy inLeadership and Management
More "sound advice" from the autor of "Sever Habits of Highly Effective People". Quite a few (at least semi) practical advices in this book - building on the priveate and public victories. I think Covey once more prooved his ability to put this into a leadership perspective. Althoug it may not be absolutely necessary to read The Sever Habits in advance, it undoubtedly would be an advantage .
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but redundant on many points
This follow up book to the SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE (Covey), repeats a lot of the same ideas in this title. However, it applies the ideas in a slightly different way and is a useful read who want to enforce the difficult to develop seven habits and apply them on an organizational level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to Read-Well Organized-Great to Use Seperately Chapter by Chapter
This book is a really easy-to-read, practical book for those who want some fun ideas on how to share leadership qualities with managers or up and coming leaders in your organization.
1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to become a great boss, don't read this
Fox uniquely attempts to give suggestions on how to keep the best employees. Fox divides his book into fifty short stories that sometimes include a real life situation. Many of his anecdotes have serious flaws in the basic principles of Organizational Behavior, while others do not fully explain how to handle potential problems. There are instances where his suggestions can be very useful in becoming a good manager. At other times, his stories have good concepts, but do have loopholes.

5-0 out of 5 stars ... after deep change the new book ...
Reading Robert Quinns book and follow his recommandation could lead yourself into a new dimension of thinking about yourself.
2-0 out of 5 stars What to Think?? Change or Bridge Building?
This book is deeply esoteric, and if you have not had the benefit of reading his first book, Deep Change, then you may find yourself wondering what the key elements to change and bridge building are.Although the author offers pearls of wisdom, they are hidden and dispersed throughout the chapters. Don't expect to read this book over the weekend in order to start on the next. This book requires time and thought, and, you will need to discern for yourself what the potential lessons are. In some ways the author appears confused about whether he is attempting to convey how to develop deep change or if he is attempting to convey bridge building. You will need to decide for yourself if this is merely semantics. In my mind, there is a definite distinction between the two yet the author has trouble deciding what he is trying to present. In some ways the book reminds me of Sufi Parables; in that you may discern a different meaning or lesson on a different day depending on your attitude and mind set at the time of the reading. All in all, this is a deeply philosophical book that may leave you disappointed. My suggestion?Pass this one up and go for his earlier book, Deep Change

5-0 out of 5 stars Leading in Life
Reading this book caused my understanding, interest and excitement about self-management and self-motivation, and about leading and motivating others, to expand enormously - perhaps even to explode in a positive manner. After discovering the table of "Eight Polarities and Eight Creative States," I have referred to it repeatedly. All of us know that motivation of one's self or others may be ethereal and certainly is metastable.Dr. Quinn has carefully chosen the most pertinent terminology and thoroughly explained why and how we can move toward balance between the extremes of the Eight Polarities and thereby lengthen our stay within "the fundamental state of leadership."The examples shared are contagious - as is the fundamental state of leadership.Read more

By melding love, science, and religion into a primer on personalgrowth, M. Scott Peck launched his highly successful writing and lecturing career withthis book. Even to this day, Peck remains at the forefront of spiritualpsychology as a result of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good example of selfishness
It is apparent that the first premise in Peck's book is that in order for humans to be a whole being, one must grow through spirituality (or enlightenment) attained through "grace" with the main purposes of gaining "capacity and understanding of serendipity" (309) and through "spiritual evolution, whereby people grow towards godhood" (270) and "become God" (283).
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
Peck's definition of love is unparalleled in any of the literature I have read concerning the matter. I have always been particularly fond of Kahlil Gibran's depiction of marriage and love. However, I feel that Peck redefines it in modern English and provides a contrast to the "mainstream" view of love and "falling in love."
4-0 out of 5 stars Life is difficult...
I read this book and the sequel, People of the Lie around the time that they came out.I was stunned by Peck's honesty. The stories of how he and his patients struggle with the problems and obstacles that confront them are amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.
Steve Sample is a very unusual University President.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for college and university planners
The literature on leadership is a little like outer space: vast and mostly empty. This little book is one of the brighter stars. Begin reading Chapter 11, the Case Study. Sample's record of achievement in this chapter will open your mind and heart to principles that are eloquently argued in the rest of the book. While the principles apply to all types of organizations, academic insitutions will get the most from them. Every research university in America can benefit from Sample's experience, wisdom, and exemplary leadership.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Insignts
What do you think it would take to be a great leader is the challenge that Steven Sample's tasks our most inventive critical thinking skills. He says leadership can be taught and learned and that it is a study that is open to investigation and change. He challenges us to be an intellectual and independent thinker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips, Good Read
I loved this book, and I've read lots of eBay books. Unlike some other writers these guys give you the straight story--the good with the bad--and don't make a lot of pie in the sky promises. This really keeps you centered, and realistic.I found some great tips for sourcing, which is a real challenge for all the sellers I talk to. There were also helpful tips on auction management, customer service, and selling internationally. The profiles of actual PowerSellers and many quotes and anecdotes really made this a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars My best eBay book investment to date.
As you can see from my Me page, User ID harleyglasses. I have read many eBay related books. This one tops my list for may reasons. Althought they are not powersellers, Brad and Deb don't pretend to have invented the information in their book, they start off by thanking all of the Powersellers and other professionals that contributed to the book. I might add that many are in the top 100 sellers on eBay and are members of PeSA, the Professional eBay Sellers Alliance. Brad and Deb have all the right connections :-)

This is an excellent book. The authors know their business. The writing is clear and easy to follow. I particularly like the pratical information provided by the authors and their examples. There is also a chapter on copyright and applications. The book covers a brief history of Distance Ed which shows how this educational platform has grown.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Text Ever
I'm currently working on my Master's degree and this is probably the worst book ever written.Without a doubt I can say that I have never read such a confusing book. This book contradict's itself while placing concepts together that shouldn't be placed together. The chapter's cover too much information without clearly explaining any given example that goes along with a section. If you can, avoid this book at all costs. If I'm not reviewing clearly it must be that I just finished the last exhausting chapter of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst textbook ever!
I am a senior in college and I have used and read many, many textbooks but this is the worst one ever! Very hard to read, the example are not explained very well, MANY< MANY typo's that are confusing to the reader. Many math examples and explanations are outright just wrong. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!! This one is the best out there
you can skip to any chapter and read that topic without having to read the first chapters. Go to what you inquire and the author will present it as standalone material. THis is like the bible of Magazine How-to books...

2-0 out of 5 stars A Tough Read
I found How to Start a Magazine by James Kobak difficult to read and somewhat depressing. The promises on the cover, in my humble opinion, we never fulfilled and the textbook-style format was flat.I felt as if, rather than a telling me "how to" he was telling me all the reasons "not to."He also came from only one perspective--that of a large scale, national publication. My goal is to build a local business-builder magazine. Therefore, much of the information was irrelevant for me.Based on the cover promises, I thought I'd found the ideal book for my needs. It didn't deliver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commitment To Resilience; Deference To Expertise
Karl Weick and Kathleen Sutcliffe have written an eloquent and practical guide to reliability and safety that emphasizes the managerial point of view, but is also equally helpful to researchers or safety professionals. Perhaps the greatest thing the authors are able to accomplish in this book is in emphasizing the conscious mindfulness required in critical situations, and in distinguishing in observable and real-world ways the specific components of mindfulness as seen in safety-conscious High Reliability Organizations (HROs).
4-0 out of 5 stars Cal State Hayward Student
Good Book - easy read - thorough case studies of Union Pacific merger with Southern Pacific (and how UP botched the job because they didn't plan for the unexpted).Other analogies used: operations on an aircraft carrier, operations in a (nuclear) power plant.
5-0 out of 5 stars Weick strikes again
Drs Weick and Sutcliffe provide a very readable presentation of a complex subject. Geared towards the business audience (but also a good introduction for researchers), it provides a clear outline of the underlying issues in managing complex organizations as well as concrete methods for transforming your organization into one capable of dealing with uncertainty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on decision making
This book discusses ten common errors that people make in decision making, and how to avoid them. When I first saw this title, I was not that interested, because I wanted a book on how to make decisions, not on the errors that people make. After reading it, I find the information to be very useful and practical. This is one of my all time favorite books, I go back to it every so often, and even after reading it a few times I find myself making some of the errors that are discussed in the text. Hopefully I don't make as many as I used to! I know the ideas in this book have been a very substantial help in improving my decision making process, and I am getting better as time goes by. Very highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this simple book about the process behind good decisions
I write about scientific careers, and one of my favorite books is Decision Traps. I recommend this book to anyone who is facing a major career decision, and who would like to separate the emotion from the facts in the decision process. Too often we cloud our decisions with personal feelings and ill-conceived "rules of thumb." This book will help you eliminate decision shortcuts which traditionally DON'T lead to the best answer. It worked for me in my personal life as well. Really helps you understand how your mind works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Insightful, In a newer version
I read this book as part of a class in graduate school, and I found it to be quite practical, not only providing insights into ways that decisions can go wrong, but also steps that can be taken to reduce biases in your decisions due to errors in the process, although some of the strategies can only be effectively implemented at the organizational level.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Trees
The problem with so many how-to books (this one included) is that they spend page after page telling you what they are going to tell you, then talking to you about what they are about to tell you what it is you are wanting to know ... and then telling you.Oh, yeah:after that they tell you what they already told you.And then the rest of the book is filled with "well this isn't related to our thesis, but you might be interested in this other stuff anyway."

The book E-myth Revised covers more information and is 1/3 the price of this book. Maybe buy this book if you don't understand E-myth and just need it explained to you in different words. Very dissappointed and thought this was a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Jump Start for Business Building!
If you want to actually apply concepts of operations development to your own business, especially if you have 0-20 employees, you'll do well with Carter's book. You'll find short chapters, with simply stated to-do items and an understandable how to guide for setting up business operations. For my money, it's a steal at the price. If you can't glean one, single idea for bettering your business that's worth the 38 bucks, you're not paying attention. I've shaved thousands of dollars off my overhead expenses thanks to Chapter 15 alone. It's a lot of common sense stuff, but it was obviously common sense stuff I wasn't doing very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars REALLY GOOD ROLE MODEL, CHALLENGES HISTORY, MAKES YOU RETHINK AND ANALYZE WHAT LEADERSHIP IS
Leadership is neither a good or bad moral obligation. It is an attitude and action. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said that, if you flinch at the idea that you will hurt somebody, you yourself are already dead. Morality cannot sustain mortality, it inevitable that the idea of your own death, takes precedence over the emotion of war and murder.

As a first time manager, I was thrilled to see advertisement for this book.It really was the title that attracted me to it.I was delighted to learn that my intuition about my employees behavior was not my imagination, and this book nailed it.It was interesting to read about people behavior, gossip, reluctunce of male counterparts to cooperate in workplace. This easy to read book was pure blessing with its down to earth advice and excellent reference index.Once I finished reading this book, I was able to continue my management education thru referring to other book materials that address leadership issues and what is means to be a female manager. This is great book for both managers and employees. It does not matter is you work in corporate world or you own your business.Advice from this book applies to all work environments. ...
