5-0 out of 5 stars Gold standard
The other reviewers have made the points that I would have liked to have made. I have read every significant book that has been written on the Egyptian economy in the last 20 years, and this is better than all of them. By skillfully combining acute technical analysis, the best available data, and insider knowledge of the thinking of international agencies and Egyptian policymakers, this book sets the standard by which all subsequent studies of the Egyptian economy will be judged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, lucid analysis
This book is a model of what an interesting country economic study should be. The author has the perfect credentials: a long association with Egypt, a previous book on the subject, access to the leading Egyptian economic policymakers, access to the data bases and analyses of the World Bank and the IMF (as director of the World Bank's Egypt department) sound trainingin economics (affiliation with Cambridge and Harvard Universities), and the ability to write fluently. The book, therefore, is informed by acute technical analysis and pertinent personal anecdote. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding study of Egyptian economy and policymaking
In the 1980s, as a post-graduate student in Middle East studies, I read Khalid Ikram's earlier book Egypt: Economic Management in a Period of Transition (Johns Hopkins University Press). My Cambridge University professor described it as "outstanding." Now Ikram has written another outstanding work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book amazed me with its thorough and readable approach to a process that is at once simple and profound. Read this and you will learn how the cafe process has worked worldwide to bring people together for meaningful conversation. People who host cafes in the style explained in the book are able to create an atmosphere in which everyone can feel heard, can deeply listen to others and then halp weave the ideas together. I plan to use it for my workplace as well with community groups.
3-0 out of 5 stars Your mileage may vary
The theories and philosophical principles of The World Cafe are sound and powerful. What is not explored in this book--and should be--are the inconsistent results of what is promoted.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Talk
Authors David Isaacs and Juanita Brown came up with the idea for the World Caf when they tried to rescue a meeting in their home that was threatening to turn into a disaster. Leaders from the Skandia Corporation were supposed to have a discussion on their northern California home's beautiful patio. Unfortunately, it was pouring. Brown and Isaacs had to squeeze 24 Swedes into their living room. They hastily covered small TV tables with sheets of newsprint anchored with small flower vases. Soon, the place looked like a coffee shop. The delighted guests began conversing immediately, eventually moving among the small groups to hear what others had to say. Thus, the World Caf movement was born. Isaacs and Brown include many stories about ways that organizations have used World Caf conversations. They provide lists, drawings and discussion questions. Brown's commentary on process and principles weaves all this together. She makes grand claims for this approach, believing that conversation is the wave of the future and the best way for people to learn and change. Jargon alert: the authors truly adore New Age gobbledygook. One example suffices: "Optimum learning and development occur in systems in which there is a rich web of interactions, along with an environment of novelty where new opportunities and spaces of possibility can be explored." Despite such warm-hearted mush, we recommend this book to managers who are willing to experiment with an innovative meeting format that lets them synthesize experts' ideas with the experiences of their own people. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better critiques of complete free trade
Stiglitz is certainly a critic of the free trade ideology but his arguments are much more intellectually robust than I see from either the economic nationalists like Lou Dobbs or the anti-globalization movement (and those two are distinct among themselves). He doesn't favor developed world protectionism, and actually makes a few strong points against it. However his proposals do respond to some of the claims of the anti-globalization movement even if he doesn't accept their quasi-Marxist outlook in total.
5-0 out of 5 stars A radical new trade model
The authors state rightly that trade policies should be designed to raise living standards and to integrate developing countries into the world trading system. Global poverty (more than 2 billion people live on less than a dollar a day) is the world's most pressing problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars very interesting - a great global economics intro
You don't have to be an economist to realise that the World Trade Organisation is failing the poorest countries. But this book is a compelling explanation of what is going wrong, and the best case yet for change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dead On
I work for a Japanese company that is mentioned in this book and the book is a dead on diagnosis of how Japanese companies are managed. For anyone familiar with the current Japanese economy (which is in a huge depression) there are some major problems with how the Japanese economy operates. There is nothing inherently genius about the solution that Porter offers, which is simply a call for a true free market system in Japan; free of tariffs, trade barriers, cartels, and collusion. However, if you work for a Japanese company I strongly suggest buying this book to understand why your company is managed the way it is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hmm.Decent
I laughed, I cried.Of course this is just an macro econ book for grad students for open econ.Builds up very gradual. But could have been written better.Don't expect any climatic love story for Autarky rates. But I enjoyed Romer's Macroecon book more, because it includes more case studies on certain theories.Since you will be reading this book for a grad class, you really have no choice, you got to buy this book, if you want to pass the prelims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
International economics is not my field, even if I do find it interesting. As a graduate student, I liked this book a lot. It is not brilliantly written, and it is at times rather dull reading. BUT it a VERY clear and modern treatment of an important subject by two of the best scholars in the field. Overall, it's a very "user-friendly" graduate textbook. Not very entertaining, but it allows you to go through the material (much of it rather advanced) without too much pain, and without many leaps of faith (or pages of algebra) to go from one equation to the next. And there are many well developed applications which will help you see how the theory relates to the real world. There are many exercises to test your (or your students') knowledge of the field, whose solutions are also separately available.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have for your private library
Currently I'm using this book for my class called Trade and Economic Growth I II.The nuances of microeconomic foundations found in chapters 1 to 5 are used to explain and develop the concepts studied in open economy macroeconomics and international finance; so it is recommended that you understand fully the first three chapters of this book at least to understand the rest. The authors try to explain the concepts as clear as possible; however, you have to derive for yourself the equations that appear in the text, which is a challenge for most first year graduate students who are not yet proficient in using the tools of static/dynamic optimization, etc.A reference on mathematical economics such as Chiang's "Fundamental methods of math. econ.," and "Elements of dynamic optimization," or Simon Blume's "Mathematics for economists"should be kept near at hand.Nevertheless, there are many real-world examples that help clarify matters and make the this book more readable and interesting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quality
book came on time just like it was promised and was in one piece too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
I had to read this book in my Public Policy economics class (although i really enjoyed it, which is rare in economics classes). It was a very easy read: a bunch of short articles on public policy issues. It reminds me of the Economist magazine; mostly case studies backed up by economics. This book focuses onpublic policy blunders, i.e. health care costs, why SUVs are so popular, the costs of terrorism, the costs of illegalizing drugs, various monopolies, the California energy crisis, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Excellent Exploration of Real-World Economics Issues
This is a great little book to use as a companion to a textbook in any intro to economics class. Accessible even to people with no econ background at all, it shows how the principles of economics can be useful to understand a variety of different issues. The readings are short and clear, and they cover real-world, current issues. I would also recommend this to any reader who wants to learn more about the practical applications of economics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Spiriit in Business???
I cannot resist subtitles like "Seven new trends that will transform how you work, live and invest."Aburdene explains these trends in clear, consise language.Everything from the power of spirituality to a socially responsible investment boom.I thought they were all in the background and less important than the mighty bottom line in business. Aburdene uses some hopeful thinking: if employees are responsible and spiritual then the corporation will act responsibly and market success will follow.I wish business was that easy.
4-0 out of 5 stars The spiritual transformation of capitalism?
Against the recent exposures of the "shadow-side" of capitalism (Enron, Worldcom, accounting scandals), author Patricia Aburdene heralds a bright transformation occuring. It is a transformation towards a more responsible, human, ecological and long-term view of business and consumerism. It is one having more to do with "heart and spirit" than with facts and figures. It is about businesses being concerned with other considerations beyond their legal obligation to increase shareholder value. It is about consumers who look for companies who have like-minded values to their own - and not just buying the cheapest product at Wallmart. It is about developing a more expansive philosophy of life and subtly encorporating one's beliefs and values into one's work to make the world a better place. It is about giving back and not just taking from people and the planet.
4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps I work to hard
I might be working too hard to be efficient. If I work too many hours or focus too much on then "doing", I do not leave myself time for the important things like strategy and the big picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gloriously Fun Marriage of History, Technology and Economics - a Real Page Turner
The only reason I give this book 5 stars is because I can't give it 6!This blessed relief from boring, tedious economic tomes is the best of it's kind since "The Incredible Bread Machine."
5-0 out of 5 stars Even-handed intro to why the rich are rich and the poor poor
The author shows how new technologies and political clout have worked to insolate USA farmers from both the risks of the marketplace and the risks of farming. The advantage over impoverished farmers in Africa, is not simply that farmers in the United States receive subsidies, but farmers in the United States have organized to efficiently eliminate waste in the production process. They have turned waste into multiple streams of profit. In addition, they organize to lobby congress for relief from various kinds of risks and, of course, from taxes.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the classroom - more than you think
Enough reviews lauding the author and this book have been written, and all of them well-deserved.But since it becomes available in paperback this June (2006), this review hopes to spark a wider discussion of how it might be used in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A collection of article extracts on Development Economics
This is a book written for students and researchers working in the field of Development Economics. Virtually all areas of the field are covered and most of the most important articles that have been published on the development of the economy are in it. More advanced readers will however notice that some articles that should been in this book are missing. It is nevertheless an incredible help for all those who want to get a good oversight or a good reference in the latest research in Development Economics. The style is naturally very technical, however the authors are helping with comments and case study examples, which makes the understanding of the areas that they cover a lot more easy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good second step in development economics
This book is a very good introduction to development economics for those who have some background in economics. The book does assume some prior knowledge of concepts and terminology, as it seeks to address many of the main contemporary issues related to development. There is a definite bias of focus on Third World developing countries rather than transitional or developed countries.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of articles

I was originally born in Uganda and I can assure you that Africans have always been suspicious of the so-called "aid" they receive since it almost always comes after a crisis that they can't quite explain (like how did a bunch of poor, illiterate preteens get the money to buy those fancy weapons, or why won't aid agencies buy food from the local farmers and distribute THAT).
