5-0 out of 5 stars Practical approach and mathematicallyrigorous at the same time
Excellent book for whom is looking for a practical approach that at the same time is presented through a rigorous mathematical methodology. The book is absolutely superior over the academic textbooks that usually limit themselves to CAPM and efficient market theory. Grinold and Kahn go much forward and at the same time had managed to clearly and meticulously show the CAPM model, its limitations and the more sophisticated tools developed from it. Beside of showing the active way of managing a portfolio, the serious mathematical presentations through which the different theories such as CAPM are described are very convincing of how difficult it could be to beat the market.

1-0 out of 5 stars Theoretical framework with no practical examples.
There is important information in this book but most of us need to see numerical examples to reinforce theoretical concepts. This book really comes up short in this area. It provides some discussion with the formulas/equations it presents but is very incomplete in terms of worked out examples.Yes, including worked out examples mightmight mean a book three timesas long, but the book would then be many, many times more useful to practitioners.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the seminal text for Quantitative Finance
If you work for one of the top alpha quant shops (Barclays, Goldman, etc.), this text is a the proverbial must read. These are the guys that essentially invented quantitative finance in its modern form, building upon the [only somewhat applicable] concepts of Sharpe and Rosenberg and demonstrating how they can be harnassed to drive alpha.Anybody who has given this text a poor review obviously doesn't work in quantitative finance (chances are they're merely stock-pickers).If you want to understand how to drive alpha and beat the market, this text goes a lot further than explaining the simple concepts of information ratio and tracking error; instead, this book touches on the beauty of multi-factor models and covariance risk management. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written guide
This book is a concise well written guide to the core issues of buying, owning and selling multifamily buildings. It was extremely valuable in evaluating our first purchase of a multi-family structure.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for another good book by Steve Berges
As a real estate investor and author myself, I read a lot of real estate books. Many, if not most, are written by folks who do not invest in real estate themselves; they only write about it. Berges is not one of them. He knows his stuff and it's clear that he practices what he preaches. I have read three of his books and, I must say, he's one of my favorite real estate authors. You can trust what he says. Experienced investors may want a bit more detail from Steve, but what he does say is accurate and safe. This is a good book on buying apartments. In fact, in my own book, "Investing in Duplexes, Triplexes & Quads," I list the best books I've read on different areas of real estate. This book is the ONLY book I recommend on investing in commercial multifamily (ie, apartments of 5 units and up) properties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astonishingly good book
This is an astonishingly good book, which integrates the best real estate research over the past decade into a practical textbook. It is pitched at masters level and is not recommended for people starting out their study of real estate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text - solid presentation - just undertand its focus
I think this is a wonderful text. However, let me state up front this is NOT a general book about real estate as an investment vehicle in the broad sense. It is a text that provides the knowledge and techniques to ANALYZE commercial real estate as a financial investment. So, yes, the book is heavy on financial analysis and the many way markets and techniques that exist for investing in commercial real estate.5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Real Estate Text I've Ever Read

4-0 out of 5 stars The Great Bust Ahead
Very Short, (55 pages), and to the point, yet, with all of the information packed into the book, it should still take a couple of nights to read if you can put it down. Mr. Arnold has a message to get out, and he gets it said.
3-0 out of 5 stars Neutral stance
I have only read reviews and small portions of this book, however I thought to offer some thoughts as I felt a few reviewers were overly critical.
2-0 out of 5 stars No Dow Snap Back
Although I agree with Mr. Arnold's ultimate conclusion and found his demographic research useful, it should be apparent now that the increase in the DJIA, which the author asserted "must happen," has not materialized.

2-0 out of 5 stars perhaps a starting point
Flow technology was once used at our organization but has been replaced by the traditional Lean and Six-Sigma tools and initiatives. Please make note the some formulas and definitions used in DFT are significantly different than standard Lean items and will cause confusion and some resistance if you try to mix them. Cycle time, takt time and kanban sizing are some examples. I purchased my book for a reference in addressing such issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and tactical
After reading lots of books on the subject of modern-day manufacturing, Mr. Costanza's book had one thing that the others didn't. It strongly focuses on the practical deployment of Flow and Lean Manufacturing - most others merely describe the subject from a philosophical perspective. The book contains what you need to know about the subject. It enables you go out and start improving your business. Our company actually gained substantial benefits from implementing the tools described. It's a pure career booster!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!
Advanced Modeling is a fantastic book, and pretty easy to follow with relatively few coding errors. There are some books out there that have errors in the code that they use, which makes it difficult or someone to learn the techniques.Even for those without a solid background in VBA, this book can benefit you to start learning how to code properly.Anyone who is relatively proficient with Excel can definitely gain a new trick or two from reading this book. All you really need to start using this book is a basic understanding of finance concepts (e.g. portolio theory, capital budgeting, binomial options pricing, Black-Scholes, etc.).The techniques that are taught are also useful in other modeling exercises, and not necessarily just for finance-related topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cookbook for Financial Modellers
Yes, the book won't teach you CAPM, Black-Scholes, or much financial theory. But there is NO shortage of those books. There is a shortage of books with real-world Excel solutions to applying financial theory to data.I've had this book for a couple of years and have probably only used 10% of it, only because I don't have time, real business need, to do the rest.I sometimes take it to bed to read and dream of having the time to try out some of their other models. That's the only thing I can add to the other reviews here, the amount of love and passion for the subject put into this book. There's not one extra padded word or graphic in this book.Yes, if there was one book I'd have to take to a desert island with Excel and some financial data this would be it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really satisfying
One of the main points of programming books is to help the reader understand the models being programmed. On this count, "Advanced modelling in finance using Excel and VBA" fails miserably. There is very little explanation of the financial concepts and models.Anyone hoping to learn finance from this book will be very disappointed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Ms. Goodman's book is a much needed resource on CDOs.If you are just learning about the CDO market, Ms. Goodman clearly defines key terms and explains the structures from beginning to end. Those with extensive Wall Street experience will enjoy having one of the few well-written references available in the market. It is also a good marketing tool to give to potential investors. This is a good comprehensive reference guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous and outrageous accusation by an idiot reviewer
The reviewer below suggests that Moorad Choudhry has posted a negative review of this book. To him/her I say this: Moorad Choudhry did not write it. I did. Mr Choudhry actually has a very high opinion of this book, and recommended to me I buy it when I attended a Bloomberg seminar he lectured at a few months ago. "Buy the new Goodman/Fabozzi book on CDOs, its excellent" he told me.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on CDOs - personally recommended

2-0 out of 5 stars Vastly Overrated
If you have any interest in learning how to use a trend following methodology - or even how trend following really works - you should look elsewhere.Nothing in this book is applicable beyond a brief chart in the last third that explains support and resistance. While I do not agree with the position that trend following is dead, overrated, or otherwise worth ignoring, this book most assuredly is worth ignoring. What little it offers in practical advice can be found in many better, less expensive books on basic technical trading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
Looking for a trend following system? You won't find one in this book.Developing one and need some assistance? No help here either. The critical areas of system development are not covered (What to buy or sell, How much to buy or sell, When to buy or sell, When to get out of a losing position, and When to get out of a winning position). This book contains a shallow analysis of successful trend followers and their techniques.

2-0 out of 5 stars Trend Hype
I read this book and I must say that I liked it but it really was just a bunch of hype as to why you should be a trend follower. Everyone in the trading business knows that the trend is your friend. Most have heard of the Turtles and know that trend following can be a great way to make money trading. But what this book doesn't address is how to trend follow. It talks alot about the money managers that do trend follow, but nothing about how, which the title of the book implies. It says "How" but fails to address "How" other then to say these guys are trend followers and you should be too. I would say the title is a little misleading. The title should be , "These Great Traders Make Money by Trend Following". So if you want to learn the "how to" then just forget this book as it will give little insight into that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reading
You know, if you want to be the best, you need to learn from the best. George & Donald are the pinnacles of success in the real estate business. George Ross presents how things work with him & Donald in the business world, from his perspective. I highly recommend it. I have far more respect for George now after reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting
According to the book, George Ross was very instrumental in Donald Trump's success and more power to him.His book is very entertaining and informative. Having seen him numerous times on the Apprentice it is easy to see his personality come through in his writing.I recommend the book to anyone who wants an enjoyable, enlightening and full-of-ideas read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me tripple my income and doubled my client base!!
Buy it, use it and you will see a major change in the way your clients view you and your practice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for New Financial Advisors
I am a new financial advisor, and I found some of the techniques in this book useful.I like the general approach - that it's important to sell the story behind the security - but I think the author presents this approach in a rather simplified way.The general idea was useful for provoking thought, but the specifics were lacking.I felt like this book would have been better as a long article rather than a book (but it probably wouldn't have made as much money for the author!)

4-0 out of 5 stars And What a Story Told!
Uncommon common sense in approaching potential clients and establishing the vital basis of trust to move an initial meeting into a meaningful, long-term relationship beneficial to both parties.West & Anthony capture the very essence of building on the fundamentals of a value-added client experience, focusing on the essential concept of building the one-on-one rapport that establishes an advisor as the advisor of choice (and sets the stage ultimaely for quality referrals.)I especially enjoyed reading Chapter 13 "Let Me Tell You a Story" focusing on analogies and metaphors--fantastic!A good read and an excellent philosophy to establishing a financial advisory practice.4 Stars. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This was okay
I think this was an okay read.I thought he had too much fluff in the beginning.I found combining this book and a book called Investing Without Losing to have a good mix, on one end you get some basic foreclosure law by Loftis intro and a how to instruction set with the latter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Explanation
I'm a rookie when it comes to tax lien investing. However, Loftis does a great job of explaining the intricacies of bidding as well as the different systems used in different states and counties.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a very good resource for tax lien investing and covers some states very well. Because state laws are so different and always changing, it's not feasible to write a book that has current information for every state. This book accurately describes tax lien and tax deed investing procedures for most states. I found this book to be the most complete book in print about tax liens that I have found and it even has some information on deeds. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who want to get involved in investing in tax lien certificates or tax deeds. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit hard to understand
I had an older edition of this book, which wasn't very helpful, so I bought the new one hoping it was an improvement, but came away rather disappointed because, for an instructional manual, this one is hard to follow.Apparently, the authors have been in the valuation business for a long time, but it's not always easy to translate experience effectively into words. For most, this is a how-to project with potentially big consequences, so the instructions should be more clear than this. I liked "Unlocking the Value of Your Business" as an alternative.Once I read that book, I understood better what these guys were talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Terrific Resource for Practitioners Not Investors
I am a lawyer who has tried valuation cases and this book is a terrific resource for valuation experts and attorneys.I used it to defend and to attack witnesses. It is respected. It is used at the Federal Judicial Center as training for judges on these issues. It is not at all appropriate for people who are trying to value companies for investment purposes.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
Honestly I was surprised to see the book is founded on the mainstream economic theory when the hedge fund industry itself is an idealization of alternative thesis. There is no quantitative insight whatsoever into the hedge fund strategies there, even though the author does provide useful information for anyone interested in understanding the bits of this secretive industry. In my humble opinion, the book should have moved beyond those generic topics to how the quantitative models are derived and which fields of knowledge are assisting in that endeavour, ie quantum mechanics, chaos theory, etc. Instead of those interesting insights, I got a recap of what a MBA student learns in her first semester in finance class, coupled with some considerations about how to put upon the microsope the hedge fund historical data.
4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat misleading title, but good book
I bought this book with the hope that finally I would learn how hedge fund strategies should be implemented in a quantitative and practical way. What a delusion I was under! Suffice to say that I regretted this purchase. You will not learn about investment strategies here, so if this is your motivation, look somewhere else (Lhabitant's first book "Hedge Funds: Myths and Limits" is better on investment strategies, but only in a qualitative way). All the same, I have found some use for this book. If you want a review of finance/investment theory like asset pricing models (CAPM, APT), risk and return measurement, regression analysis, etc. the book will do just fine. I recommend looking at the table of contents to see if this book suits your purpose. I have found chapter 5 on hedge fund indices, and the problems with these, very useful. Also, chapter 9 on style analysis is good, as well as chapter 8.5 on hedge funds as option portfolios which summarizes the scientific papers by Fung, Agrawal and those guys. However, you will find most of the book's topics in finance textbooks used in graduate schools, but if you haven't read those, I guess this book will be very useful for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book - Practical Advice
With only 15-18 years until retirement, I have been on a quest to learn as much as I can about money as quickly as possible. This book is a no-nonsense education that will have my wife and I ready for that time by setting and taking action on clearly defined goals, getting our finances and financial paperwork under control, and motivating our family and friends to follow suit. Even if your goal is to have $1 million over 30-40 years and you only get to $800,000, you are a lot further ahead than those who say, "I will start tomorrow." Don't start tomorrow... start NOW. This is a very easy to read book with alot of checklists, quizzes and tools/resources to make your dreams a reality; however, only YOU can take those necessary steps. This book is a gold mine of information. Take the time ... NO, MAKE the time ... to read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the most comprehensive review on value
In short, this book is grounded on economics and common sense. It summarizes "the intelligent investor", "security analysis", and the modern books on Buffett pretty well (there are other paths to heaven besides Buffett's). Its verbiage is beautifully chosen and a joy to read, especially for avid value investors. Best of all it is a scholarly work - if you're sick and tired of the commercial investing books that flood bookstores, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for serious investors of any stripe
A must-read for investors of any stripe, growth or value. This book, written by a couple of the most popular professors at Columbia Business School, explains the innovations in the field of value investing as practiced by some of the most successful investors in the field. (fair disclosure: I will be taking courses from them in 2007) This book successfully bridges the gap between the traditional Graham & Dodd style of value investing to what works today. Although it's a paperback, it's written with the density of a textbook. The writing style is not light, and the actual meat of the book takes some time to wade through. If you don't have some experience in accounting or corporate finance, then Joel Greenblatt's The Little Book That Beats the Market is good to read first.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, but confusing
Good content and good approach. I'm a fan of value investing. The book teaches the reproduction cost of assets and the earning power value. It also hints on how to incorporate growth.
