Tad Crawford Does It Again
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography.I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.
Business and Legal Forms for Photographers
Appears to cover all the bases, including contracts, legal assistance, and many more forms than I ever imagined I might need. Very informative.

An Invaluable Resource
I didn't originally buy this book to "read".I bought it for the invaluable resources inside - the wealth of forms that any photographer needs to protect their work and their business.What makes this book so enticing is you don't have to photocopy, or redesign any of the forms since they're all included on a CD that comes with the book.That being said, I should mention that I was quite surprised at the thorough explanation for each form, and the situations where each form might be needed contained in the book.A person could undoubtedly pay hundreds (probably thousands) in legal fees assembling the information in this book on their own.This book is a photographer's "legal-resource-in-a-book".I highly recommend it. ... Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. Great straghtforward information and advice
I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting.The book is helpful and worth the price.It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

Another Nolo Press Winner
My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc.He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on.Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically. ... Incorporating your Business for Dummies
The book gave a good review of the different types of Incorporation. The type that might be best for any business desired with different requirements and tax advantages of each type. Whether one has partners makes a difference in type needed or whether one wants to sell stock in their company or not.
Lots of Incorrect Information
This book is in a word HORRIBLE.Some of this information is dangerous to someone starting up a business because it is incorrect.Unfortunately, the Wiley Dummy series hires low end authors who aren't experts and don't research the topics. Good as a starter, but you will need more.
Inc for Dummies is not just for dummies, it is a good book on How To Incorporate, but you will need more.Read more

Ideas are free, but assets bring wealth...
I wonder if the creators of that operating system had this book, would anyone know of Bill Gates or Microsoft; or if Xerox held its research and development of the paperless office, would the Information Technology field be totally different- yeah you know where I am going with this.
Swindled
I think I know how this book was written.A whole lot of cut and paste from U.S. Law code with some mediocre story telling sprinkled in.If you want to be technical and write in the language of professional law, fine.But this is not the series to do it in.

Dry and boring.Could barely keep my eyes open.
Unlike the rest of the Rich Dad books that I've read -- which were for the most part fantastic -- this book was terrible.Michael Lechter may indeed be a very bright guy and a star in his field, but he is an absolutely horrendous writer.The intro by Robert Kiyosaki was the only really enjoyable part to the book.Lechter immediately jumped into complex explanations of the various types of IP protection available without really clarifying anything for the lay person like me.And no real life examples of anything -- just references to a couple hypothetical "horror stories" that he relays at the beginning of the book.The only reason I gave this book 2 stars and not 1 is because at the very least I was able to get some basic definitions of IP terms down.But I guess I could've gotten that from a dictionary too. ... An invaluable resource for starting a non-profit in CA
This was an excellent book, very well written for the layperson. The online links to further instruction and the CDROM were fabulous tools. I highly recommend this to an start-up non-profit.

Excellent Step by Step Guide to Forming Your Non-Profit
This book is an excellent step by step guide for starting your non-profit corporation in California. The author does a lot of hand holding, which is especially helpful when it comes to filing your 1023 with the IRS which establishes your tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.
So far so good
This book has gotten us through filing papers with the Secretary of State. I haven't gotten into writing bylaws and filing tax forms yet--which should be much more challenging--but from skimming over those sections, I think I should be able to manage. I expect this book will have saved us hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in lawyer and accountant fees by the time our nonprofit is up and running. ... Read more

Good Introduction to Business Law
This was the textbook for an introductory course in business law I took. It does a great job at laying the groundwork of the US legal system and explodes many common myths. A large amount of material is covered clearly and consisely. The chapters on contracts and constitutional law alone are worth the price of the book. The authors do a good job hitting the high points and not getting bogged down in details that are inappropriate for an introductory course.
Legal & Regulatory Environment of Business
Great Book. Better than the other Legal Business books. Great cases. Easy to read and understand. Great for Business law. Other books are more about law instead of business law, Not this book. You be the Judge DVD-Rom is great similation of legal business situations. Book is great for learning Business Law.

Informative, enlightening, and well-organized.
Like many Americans, I didn't know much about our country's principles of government or its legal system.This book helped me to become more knowledgeable about both.I admit, this is not reading I would choose to curl up with in front of the fire; this was part of a requirement for my MBA.However, I will remember what I've learned in this text long after my class ends. Having previously been clueless about the legal system, it is now exhilarating to read about, say, how the nine US Supreme Court Justices are dealing with the aftermath of the Gore vs. Bush debacle and actually understand what is going on.The chapters are well-organized and easy to understand. There are even helpful study tips and ways to brief a legal case in the beginning of the text.After completing this book, I not only feel better equipped to handle business decisions, but also feel empowered and enlightened for better understanding our great country. ... Thw Below reviewer is just plain wrong!
It's wrong to cut down a book for the purpose of promoting another book. No one should rely on any book about law for legal advise because laws differ from state to state and laws are constantly changing.This is a fine book and gives you a head start on what you need to know, but don;t rely on it--Only a fool would serve as his own lawyer, even if they had a degree in law and a state bar ticket!So five stars to this one!(If inly to make up for the bad taste review below)---

Terrible source of outdated information
IRS Form 1023 is one of the most important pieces of starting a nonprofit organization. Yet this book, which is stamped with a 2005 copyright, contains information for the outdated, pre-2004 version of the 1023.

Excellent pros & cons of incorporating
I read an earlier edition of this book and lent it to a few different people (the last didn't return it).I am buying another copy for myself to keep and one to lend.It's that good.

Not for an Amateur...
I bought this book with the hopes of getting a good step by step introduction as to how to start my own Inc. business.Turns out the author's presentation was way out of my league and was geared toward people who already have an established business.This book is mostly about the tax benefits a a established business would get if it Incorporated itself....This isnt a "How To-Getting Started" Book for people wanting to start their own business for the first time.Also, too many figures and too many numbers, and the language used was very complex...the type of language people would get their lawyers to interpret for them.
How did this get to be called "a classic?"
I really do not know why this is in it's 10th edition or on it's 25 anniversary.I purchased the book thinking it would be a useful introduction to the benefits of incorporation and guidance for the benefits / drawbacks to each form of corporation.The discussion is more suitable for someone with significant exposure to corporate structure who is looking for fine tune their strategies - perhaps an accountant or a tax attorney.While I (a physician) could often understand what the author was trying to communicate, I found her approach confusing. ... Okay but lacking.
This book had a lot of helpful facts about LLCs, but no guidance really in forming one, or whether you should form an LLC or corporation. The state-by-state appendix of laws and contact information hadn't been updated since 1997. The sample operating agreement was not on the disk, so you couldn't tailor it and use it for your company.

Could be better
The book was decent, although a bit generic - no particular insights provided. The discussion of the terms of an LLC Operating Agreement could be a lot more detailed.

Worth the money
This set me straight on a few things while setting up my business. It is well written and easy to understand. I would recommend this to any 1st time business owner starting out.

Just what the doctor ordered!
Nolo's Legal Guide to Starting and Running a Small Business was exactly what I needed to help start my company off on the right foot. I don't have a very strong legal backround and would have been way over my head if I'd tried to forge ahead totally alone but at the same time I didn't want to spend a fortune consulting a lawyer. If you're in a similar situation then Nolo's Legal Guide is the perfect solution. It is well written, well organized, thorough, and very easy to use. It's a great general start-up kit that would be helpful to any fledgling business that I can think of. If I had had to call a lawyer to answer every legal question that arose in the first couple of months (a huge number) then my company may easily have never gotten off the ground. I was so pleased with this product that I have since purchased two more Nolo books (Tax Savvy for Small Business and The Employer's Legal Handbook) that are more directed at business owners who have gotten through the initial start-up phase. Great start for writing a Partnership Agreement
This book gives you an excellent foundation for writing a partnership agreement.It saves tremendously on the cost of having a lawyer write the whole agreement.We just had to use a lawyer to insure nothing was omitted.

Excellant Book,but......
I read the book and found it very helpful with my plan to form a real estate parnership. I found the examples at the end of each subjet very helpful. However, it seems the authors went to a great length to demonstrate to readers that they are NOT gender biased, to the point where one would find himself sometimes cringing. Their objective could have been attained better by replacing all the He, she, him, her, with "he/she" or "him/her", and let each readers to choose the jender for themselves.

All-Encompassing Book on Partnerships

A Lot of Information about this new Business Model
A limited liability company is a relatively recent addition to the traditional forms of companies. It has some fo the advantages of a corporation, and the tax advantages of a partnership, sole proprietorship or corporation depending on the desires of the owners. It is not suitable for all organizations, but if you are considering one, here is the place to start.

This bookis gold!
This book is gold.I have bought several books trying to get a clear and concise handle on what is involved in making my business legal.They all bogged me down with things I didn't understand or was left with more questions.Until this book.Richard Stim starts right off with no bull.He states in layman terms what decisions need to made first and moves right on down the line.He gives clear examples of do's and don'ts and always gives references online for further exploration.He also suggests, when necessary, to check with an attorney and what legal forms you can do yourself and what forms can be adjusted.This book comes with a CD of legal forms, so there is no hunting them or tracking down the right offices at the court house.Richard Stim takes a lot of the mystery away and makes you feel confident.I highly recommend this book for anyone!

Good book on incorporating your business
How to Incorporate is an excellent book to show the average guy how to incorporate. It is an easy read and packed with good information. Technical and Well Rounded
This book is basically a textbook, as it contains a lot of the details that are common to incorporation in any state.While the authors have stayed general enough to remain in an interstate appeal, they have still covered almost every legal aspect of incorporating, WITHOUT giving advice as to what you should do.Also covered are: sole proprietorships and limited liability coporations/partnerships and more.Good buy if you want a good cursory understanding of business vehicles.I recommend it.Please vote if this did help you.
