5-0 out of 5 stars 2004 Writers Notes Book Award Winner
The Restaurant Manager's Handbook is a no-nonsense, coverall manual for the food establishment industry. It's the essence of a successful handbook-no jokes, parables, and preachy lectures, just the facts. If you delve into the heal-thy index for fault, you'll abruptly bump into a page number for an answer, and if you're currently running a restaurant and afraid to appear inadequate, you can load the handy CD-ROM and pretend you're checking your e-mail while figur-ing out the monthly audit procedures or why the beer is flat. I'm not kidding. The next time your favorite kitchen runs short of the daily special or closes down for a lack of permit, serve them a copy of this great reference book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Large Print and Weak Content
I recieved this book anxiously, but soon became quickly disappointed with its extreme lack of content. It could have just as easily been published in 30 pages of novel sized text, because that's about all that's contained between it's large vinyl bound covers. There are less expensive books that tell you just as little as this one.

This book has a lot of information, however it does not go into great detail for those who are familiar with the principals listed inside but are looking to expand on those ideas. If you are an experienced restaurant manager or owner, this book is a waste of money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Lean book at there on Product Development
Lean originated on the production floor over sixty years ago in Japan. But Toyota product development has been sadly overlooked by corporate America. Where is the connection between Toyota stellar production practices and Toyota product development? You can't argue with the tried and true principles to systematically eliminating waste--that is the bedrock of the lean philosophy. Lean thinking is making inroads to a number of different environments and industries beyond discrete assembly like car making. Does waste occur in non-manufacturing? Oh yes, and it has largely been an untapped, dormant opportunity for applying lean. Improvement initiatives are being re-focused on office settings and now product development. There aren't many product development(PD)lean books out there but, Liker's book is excellent--it is so thorough, well researched, logical and well written! A lean novice may have difficulty because it is not "lean 101" and PD is not quite the same as lean manufacturing. But, if I forced to pick a single book on lean product development--this would be my #1 pick. It is such a good start point for lean PD. The lean benefits are self evident: cut development time in half and never miss milestones? That's has been the Toyota norm. Liker's book will walk you thru the 14 principles on how to get there the subsystem levels (Processes-People-Tools/Technology). If your PD efforts are adrift, it's reassessment time. Start here. You won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
A very detailed and at times difficult read. However, it is a must for anyone involved in product development.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Toyota Product Development System
I found Morgan and Liker's new book The Toyota Product Development System to be an excellent discussion of the key fundamentals that are missing in Detroit today based on my experience in the automotive industry. The most important reason Toyota is best is because of the way they develop and value people. This book describes the basics required to build a great Engineering organization. Engineering is the foundation that drives cost, quality and timing. This book should be required reading for everyone in the automobile industry from top management down.Morgan and Liker provide a great map for going forward for any company that designs and manufactures a product regardless of industry. The key is to start the Journey. This book is a great place to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Operations Mangement for Competitive Advantage
Great textbook for OM class. It has DVD and other supplemental applications that is helpful for learning more.I use this book for an online class and reading the materials are easy to understand. The authors are very knowledgeable and their examples are good.I especially like the videos on the DVD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cumbersome Reading
I went thru this book as part of my MBA program. This book covers a lot of ground in operations management area, but is cumbersome to read. In many cases, the material doesn't flow very well, and is difficult to understand as often the authors have missed key assumptions and background information that is key to understand the concept being presented. Also the book has way too many chapters. Some of the chapters are just too generic and don't have much meaningful and useful information. The case studies are good and very helpful in understanding the underlying concepts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I ordered this book from Amazon, com because even after shipping and handling costs I saved a few bucks compared to what I would have paid at my University's book store. It took a while for the book to arrive and when it did it had a huge crease/bend on the front cover, as I needed the book I didn't complain but after all, I only saved a few Dollars, it took quite a while for the book to arrive and then it was so poorly packed (just had a thin plastic wrap around it) that it did not look as good as you'd expect a new book for over $120 to look. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The original theory of constraints story
A particularly easy, menorable read -- I still refer to it in my engineering discussions in the business place.A must read whose applicability goes beyond manufacturing engineering.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!!!
I was required to read this book as apart of my MBA program.Boy am I glad I was!!!This is an excellent book that uses the favorable fable approach to get points across. There are excellent principles that are presented in a way that seems more like reading a NY times best seller.Very easy read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still effective after all these years.
Even though the first edition of this book was 1984, the message is still applicable. The Goal of the business is to make money, and Goldratt tells us how in a very entertaining read.Subsequent books by several authors still mimic his theme of continual process improvement through the reduction of bottlenecks which uncovers still more areas for improvement. This is one book I always buy for new managers when they start their corporate journey.I bought this one for a new CEO friend of mine.He thought it was great! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
Everything written is a bullseye with the exception of glaring ignorance regarding Six Sigma - what it is and isn't.What is written relative to Lean here should be taken verbatim as applying to Six Sigma also - there is no difference.Similarly, the written characterizations of Six Sigma should be ignored. To quote Senji Nihwa, Taiichi Ohno's lieutenant at Toyota for decades, in a good-natured ribbing, "You Americans, always trying to categorize things.Call it Lean, call it Six Sigma, it makes no difference to us...it's all the same."And so it is.
3-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up!
Thumbs up, but I'd recommend you attend his workshops over the book if the opportunity presents itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended for anyone interested in Product Development
For anyone interested in the next stage of Product Development -- this is a must read. The Toyota system encorporates what I felt has been missing in the product development process for so long.It takes into account the chaos that exists during development and actually encourages it instead of covering it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lean
Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inventory Accuracy in action
As a cost analyst for a mid-sized manufacturer, I found this book invaluable for setting up analyses of cycle counts, and it was THE guide for putting together a full physical count process when our parent company demanded it.It's a pleasure to read (yes, this, a book on managing inventory, is a PLEASURE to read!); Piasecki's take on what a physical count is REALLY like is priceless. He really has a complete grasp of what it means to have human beings managing inventory.See his chapter on what machines and humans each do best.

Fantastic and essential resource for those wishing to understand and implement inventory accuracy and cycle counting in their business practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative! A must have!
Superlative! The ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL by Donald Wulfinghoff is a "must have" for professionals, libraries, facility managers, policy makers, homeowners, and anyone else who is serious about saving energy and cashing in on lower energy bills. It is the ultimate energy saving resource for businesses, industry, and government.PLUS, it will save money and reduce pollution, satisfying corporate bottom lines, policy makers, and environmentalists all at the same time. This book is unique.Highly informative, illustration-rich, and user-friendly, it is treasure trove of everything you need to know about energy efficiency from A to Z. Don't bother looking elsewhere --the ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL simply has it all. This book will pay for itself almost as fast as you can spot a hot air leak or install an energy-efficient light bulb!5-0 out of 5 stars A secret weapon for the energy auditor
As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Toyota Magic
"Toyota Production System: Beyond Large-Scale Production" is a very enlightening work by the inventor of lean manufacturing, Taiichi Ohno. This small book is packed with insights and ideas on how to efficiently and effectively run a production system. The Toyota Production is also known as lean manufacturing, entails, among other things, minimising waste through continuous improvement and producing only what is sold, as requested by the customer. This unique and innovative system explains why Toyota makes profits even in tough times when other competitor firms are losing money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Production for everyone
Japan manufacturing revolutionized the automobile industry.Japan transformed the automobile industry by applying ideal perfection conditions of zero defect products, reduced inventories, and the generation of endless product inventories. How did Japan accomplish this breakaway?Lean production is the answer.Lean production allowed the Japanese to reduce human labor by ½, manufacturing production space by ½, capital investment by ½, required engineering hours by ½, and reduced production time by ½. US automobile companies were on the defensive and rather than compete head to head in quality and competitiveness with their Japanese counterparts they sought refuge in the political system.
2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading and dated
This is a fairly poorly researched book, despite the authors' credentials; their history of American automobiles is grossly inaccurate and only serves to reinforce incorrect stereotypes. They spend very little time actually describing lean production, preferring to talk about how every other company will go bankrupt because they don't have it. The misreading of the Volvo story is also rather galling, though to be fair, Volvo's team-based approach was already being dismantled (for non-

Don't get me wrong, this is a great book and an easy read, but it leaves alot of unexplored avenues. If you are buying this on-line realize that this is a quick read (120 pages, large type and graphics included). For one thing Wheeler does not clarify the use of capability in regards to Ppk and Cpk (in case someone out there is interested).Nonetheless, Wheeler does a great job of condensing a lot of conceptual material into a neat little book that anyone dealing in IPM, SPC,six sigma, TQM or other quality systems or analysis can appreciate (this is an especially good book for those who may need to train others in understanding variation).Wheller's examples are both entertaining and acurately tease apart some important concepts. We are indebted to his clear, concise verbage- I just wish he would expand on a few key concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every business needs to deal with variation better
This book really opened my eyes to the concept of "noise" in data. The fact of the matter is that we accept metrics like "year over year" analysis because those are easy to produce. However, this book makes a successful case that we need to be smarter about acting on data analysis. Not everything is actionable.Sometimes it is just noise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
I would recommend this book for anyone wishing to go behind the daily number crunching and analysis. I particularly like the author's tone in explaining the mistakes in common thinking in any organization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book!
I've been in the field for a few years now and I finally found a book that explains and summarizes the forecasting theory so good. This is my reference book now.I use it to teach my engineers in the subject and for personal reference as well.It provides new information that wasn't available 10 years ago.The explanaitions are good and the examples clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars DecisionPro Users must have!
Was referred to this book while evaluating several software packages for forecasting and this really helped us make the right decision. We decided on Vanguard Software DecisionPro as it supports all the methods (many of which I had no idea existed) that are outlines in this book. This book (and the software) are great. This is a great add-on for anyone doing forecasting!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has the formulas.
Chapters 3 and 4, and on covered the vital information that is useful for inventory system forecasting at the SKU level, and for measuring the accuracy of the forecasts. This book was extremely helpful in that regard. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Practical Reference
This book simply rules the subject area! If you are a practitioner looking for hands-on advice and solid methodology, this is your blueprint. It will jump-start and carry through your Supply Chain/Logistics activities. One of the best Supply Chain books I have encountered. It has a spot on my desk (as opposed to the library).5-0 out of 5 stars Supply Chain Strategy - Classes and Book
