4-0 out of 5 stars The relationship advice in this book is worth the price
Sure, this guy is pretty rude and in-your-face, but I can't say that he isn't honest. The part in the book where he talks about relationships is well worth the price of this book.To give you an idea of what he talks about when it comes to relationships, it's basically this:You don't need anybody, and if you do, the relationship is doomed. He talks about how people need their own space and their own friends, not to be too clingy or needy, and how independence attracts others. That chapter is the best advice on relationships I've ever read, and I've read quite a few.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight Talk
I found Larry's staight forward manner kind of refreshing - considering one rarely finds such straight talk concerning life these days.Anyway, the material is a collage of self-help annecdotes mixed in with Larry's experiences.I would recommend this book as a quick and easy read that has some writing exercises sprinkled in.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cold bucket of water.
I bought this book in an airport, and by the time I got to my destination, I had read it, underlined it, and highlighted the heck out of it. It smacks you around, shakes you up and hangs you out, and it's been the greatest turn-around book I've read in many years. His deal with stress "Stress comes from knowing what's right and doing what's wrong"- or " Do not loan anyone your books"- wish I'd heard that years ago, I'd have a bigger library- are incredibly simple, but since we've all gotten to the point where simple is difficult, it really hits home.

3-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book at first, but. . .
When I frst read this book several years ago, I loved it.However, I like to go over my library of personal finance books to get a little shot of encouragement when I need it or just for some info I might have forgotten. After going back to this book, I couldn't get through the silly story again. It just did not go down as well on the second helping. The story and the characters get old very fast.Skip this one and buy the automatic millionaire or the total money makeover instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice is buried in this 1950's Educational Film Strip
My dad gave me this book. I'm young (25) but not a novice when it comes to my finances. Some of the things discussed in here I'm already doing but some of it was new to me. If you can get through the annoying and downright stupid conversations (not one "joke" in here is even close to being funny) between the "barber" and his "pupils" you'll leave with some good information. The "story" is written in the fashion of a 1950's film strip on finance...I felt like it was almost talking down to me in some sections as if I wasn't intelligent enough to understand some of the concepts. Read this book, but also check out Suze Orman..especially if you're in your 20's. (and to the publisher: do you really want a review by Arthur Andersen on the back of the book?)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book...
The wealthy barber is a great little book. It explains investing to the layperson, without fancy language, or needlessly complex concepts. The Barber - told in an series of monthly haircuts to his customers - explains how one should undertake the path to financial freedom, regardless of what their income levels are. There is no real trick here, or advice on what to invest in, rather, just the founding principles one must undertake to learn before they start saving for their families future. For example, Roy, [the Barber] explains how important it is to start investing early, and how compound interest works. Also, how anyone can save a nice little nest egg by putting away just a few dollars off their weekly paycheck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is definitely very advanced and is very clearly written. The approach will:4-0 out of 5 stars Fasten your seatbelts...
I'll make two separate sets of comments - one for professors and one for students.2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing and Poorly Written

1-0 out of 5 stars Sucked
My husband came home with this book last week.I am considering buying a business of great interest to me, but I have next to no experience with retail. He has his doubts about the whole "dummies" series, but thought maybe it would help me.We both found the text to be vague, as I was looking for concrete definitions to some of the unfamiliar business terms which the book did not provide. At the same time, the suggestions for running a small business were ridiculously obvious and downright condescending. The book went back to the store, and I ordered a copy of Specialty Shop Retailing (How To Run Your Own Store) by Carol L Schroeder from my local library.I would HIGHLY recommend this book, and once I finish reading entirely I'll take the time to provide a thorough review. But really, the book has a great layout and it's enjoyable reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Biz Bible
This book has been very useful. The author gives practical tips, advice, checklists and forms - all in an easy to read format. He makes things that seem overwhelming at first suddenly seem manageable. The CD ROM saved me a bundle in legal fees.He seems to know what it is like to have been in the trenches.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book but not for my cause
I was toying with the idea of creating an online based business selling educational material and decided to buy this book because I wanted to learn the specifics of running a homebased business.I was searching for facts about taxation, how to get a business liscense, and a directory to web resources. These were in here but with such little detail. Also the book does not tackle small business management like I thought. It explained how to set up a larger business with a board of directors and examples of balance sheets working with millions of dollars in transactions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
If I was going to buy one book for SBS, this would be it.Actually, I have a couple of employees that manage SBS, so we have two copies...
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference
I agree with the comments of the other reviewers...but did want to add a couple of thoughts. The book is less than 700 pages, certainly not huge by Unleashed standards.Don't let this fool you.For example, chapter 13, covering Exchange Daisaster Recovery actually starts off with an incredibly clear description of the Exchange database structure. It just made the practices suggested in the rest of the chapter much more accessible.
5-0 out of 5 stars First 5 chapter review
I purchased Eriq Neales book, "SmallBusiness Server 2003 Unleashed". ISBN is 0-672-32805-4. So far, I have read the first five chapters in order. I intend to read the entire book in a sequential manner and then hopefully use it for field work. Here are my basic thoughts on those five chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-understand" for leaders concerned with long-term prosperity
Many thanks to Vijay Govindarajan (VG) and Chris Trimble for this grand exposition of ideas first shared in the Spring 2005 California Management Review and the May 2005 Harvard Business Review.VG and Trimble's "Forget, Borrow, Learn" framework is the most powerful recipe for corporate reinvention that I have encountered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Raising Tigers
In Nature it is rare for one species to successfully rear the young of another species. The difficulties, for example, of a tiger cub being raised by a herd of elephants are easy to imagine. If the tiger isn't accidentally trampled underfoot while it is still too immature to look after itself, it is only a matter of time before some astute members of the elephant herd recognize they are raising a natural enemy, and trample it underfoot on purpose.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to start a new business structure inside an established success
Even the most successful business eventually hits a growth ceiling which can lead to stagnation and new industry emergence: but most businesses can use their profitable platform to make changes with a little extra innovation, which is explored in Vijay Govindarajan & Chris Trimble's TEN RULES FOR STRATEGIC INNOVATORS: FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION. Start a new business structure inside a large, established company structure with the rules here: they are accompanied by industry profiles of companies which have successful made such changes, and provides ideas managers can't afford not to consider. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Movin' up
This was the text required for my personnell management class. (200 level) I have the Bohlander 13th ed. which is a better text, being better organised. But after going through this book I liked it as well. The last chapter on international HR issues was especially helpful. I have adapted the expatriate worker technoques to address interdepartmental issues in my organization. I understand there will be a new edition out in June 2006. Perhaps it will be better organized.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
The book was a copy of the textbook. The print quality is so bad it looks like the words are disappearing in front of your eyes.

3-0 out of 5 stars good case study
I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful if cumbersome
This review applies to the edition WITH CASES.This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments.Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".2-0 out of 5 stars Required Text
This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read.I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bible of Open Space
This is a very good hand-book for open space newcomers.Easy to understand and easy to read.I strongly suggest this book for anybody who want to start learning open space technology

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most valuable books in the world
As Brookings revealed in 2000, most of the world's 10000 biggest organisations don't yet have the measures to govern the vast majority of value now produced in services and knowledge businesses because as our networking age blossoms value dynamics are mainly intangible, deeply woven into the human relationships we self-organise, not for precise planning and overpowering command and control from the top. Value multiplication is a core gravity which should be embedded in everyone's right to work, learn , behave openly. 4-0 out of 5 stars a "How to" book
I recommend using open space tehcnology and/or other large scale intervention techniques to mine the collective emotional intelligence of a group of people (this may be your company, or people from an acadamic field you belong to). Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The star is for the digital version, and Amazon customer service!
Beware: If you buy the digital version from Amazon, it forces you to use Microsoft identity, and you will not be able to download the file then load it in your reader... No, you must open up a security hole in your firewall to make the pre-file send encrypted information to God knows where, then you can only read it on that identity. It is Microsoft bound so I don't know if you Mac guys or Linux guys are covered here, on PDA side, forget PDA that is not the right terminology, Pocket PC it should say.

OK let's get it out there... people who have very little to live for read business books. 99% of the stuff written is of the most egregious quality known to mankind -- people with any sense avoid the business section in any bookstore. It is the special writer indeed that can make their experiences relevant to the rest of us, impart knowledge and wisdom, who goes beyond the pump-me-up-and-let's-all-feel-good-and-happy-clappy version of corporate America -- the kind commonly encouraged in some national sales conventions. You know! The type that tries to convince you they have secrets of business success by regaling you with stories on how important their "new" business discoveries really are, when really they are variations on the benefits such banal things as getting up early, not watching too much TV, changing your socks, and giving people hell the occassional time (preferably all of the above done based upon some abstruse mathematical formulation).

Lou Adler, president of the Power Hiring consulting and training company, provides a systematic approach for finding, interviewing and hiring the best candidate for a job. He emphasizes making an objective assessment and, to this end, he provides techniques for overcoming first impressions. He identifies four key interview questions you can use to determine job candidates' competency and motivation, and to match their skills and interests to your company's needs. The book includes charts and checklists that highlight important points. We recommend this well-organized guide to effective hiring to company owners, human resource personnel and managers involved in the hiring process. Alert job seekers may also find it useful to learn what a good interview will demand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers
With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book that every person in this field need to use
e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction. The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site.It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do.This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book for practitioners
I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing.I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts. If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read.Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have. ... Editorial Review

In the last 25 years, the venture-capital industry has grown from a less than $1 billion to an over $60 billion business--growth that has far surpassed any other class of investment products. Today, the industry consists of several thousand professionals working at about 500 funds concentrated in California, Massachusetts, and a handful of other states. Despite the industry's size, there are many misconceptions about the nature and role of venture capitalists; their trade remains shrouded in mystery.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard
This was one of the better books I've read on VC.Extremely well researched, very informative, though it took awhile to read.Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars thorough but Not Practical
Very important content, but of limited use for actual VC investors or entrepreneur. It is very good with its findings, but they are all known to investors, and are of less interest to entrepreneur. that being said, I enjoyed reading the book, which shows the "proofs" to many of the things we in the industry are doing almost intuitively. The books suffers from the fact it is not sufficiently detailed to be useful in practice, while at the same time is providing good information for students learning investments. I guess it is just addressing a different audience than myself, an entrepreneru and investor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and clear info for both sides of the vc process
We used this book in an MBA course on Venture Capital here at the University of Michigan b-school.I think this is an excellent book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best In Breed
This book's content and support is, unquestionably, the best available today.I've used it to support teaching HR Management to graduate students and have been pleased to see how much my students derive from it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dessler Knows the Field
Dessler's approach in Human Resource Management is thorough, comprehensive, contemporary, and very readable. The figures, tables, andother visuals are excellent for models and practical use. The cases andapplication exercises are relevant to the real world and greatly assist inthe overall understanding of the main concepts of each chapter. Chapters onemployee testing and selection, appraising performance, job analysis, andpersonnnel planning and recruiting, are particularly well presented. Thecomplexities of establishing pay plans and financial incentives areexplained in simple terms for thereader and include revelant examples. The text also comes with supplementary materials which greatly enhance it'suse and application. This book can be used for lower as well as upperdivision courses at the University or College level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Substantive yet Simple
I found the book indeed a must for "managers".It is essentials-full and highly concise, a product of many years of thought. If not for some minor spelling errors, the book would have been near toperfection. ...
