This book is a must read for anyone trying to run a small business. The concepts are right on.

5-0 out of 5 stars The E-Myth Revisited CD
After being in business for over 21 years and finding myself in a changing market environment, this book helped me get back to basics. I had read the book many years ago and found it very helpful in taking my business to the next level. Once again, I wanted to grow my business and this CD helped me to reflect on what I was trying to accomplish. I highly recommend this CD for any entrepreneur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the closely held business owner
I found several very helpful concepts in this book, which in my opinion make it well worth the cost. The author does promote the "franchise" model, but states that readers do not have to actually franchise their business, but they must think about their business as if they were going to franchise it.His point appears to be that what business owners must do is develop the business into a model that could, if desired, be replicated. This inherently requires a discipline about the business that will substantially improve it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Text Ever
I'm currently working on my Master's degree and this is probably the worst book ever written.Without a doubt I can say that I have never read such a confusing book. This book contradict's itself while placing concepts together that shouldn't be placed together. The chapter's cover too much information without clearly explaining any given example that goes along with a section. If you can, avoid this book at all costs. If I'm not reviewing clearly it must be that I just finished the last exhausting chapter of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst textbook ever!
I am a senior in college and I have used and read many, many textbooks but this is the worst one ever! Very hard to read, the example are not explained very well, MANY< MANY typo's that are confusing to the reader. Many math examples and explanations are outright just wrong. Even professor says its an awful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!! This one is the best out there
you can skip to any chapter and read that topic without having to read the first chapters. Go to what you inquire and the author will present it as standalone material. THis is like the bible of Magazine How-to books...

2-0 out of 5 stars A Tough Read
I found How to Start a Magazine by James Kobak difficult to read and somewhat depressing. The promises on the cover, in my humble opinion, we never fulfilled and the textbook-style format was flat.I felt as if, rather than a telling me "how to" he was telling me all the reasons "not to."He also came from only one perspective--that of a large scale, national publication. My goal is to build a local business-builder magazine. Therefore, much of the information was irrelevant for me.Based on the cover promises, I thought I'd found the ideal book for my needs. It didn't deliver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on Robust Engineering... how to book
This book is quite readable, considering the topic, and does an excellent job of explaining the high level strategies of Dr. Taguchi's approach to optimization and experimentation. It also covers tactical issues like how to determine your ideal function and noise strategies.4-0 out of 5 stars How to learn Robust Design
I like this book because it gives a very good introduction into the concepts of noise- and control-factors. It treats the concept of "energy transformation" good, which is important to find the appropriate Ideal Function for your product.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Commitment To Resilience; Deference To Expertise
Karl Weick and Kathleen Sutcliffe have written an eloquent and practical guide to reliability and safety that emphasizes the managerial point of view, but is also equally helpful to researchers or safety professionals. Perhaps the greatest thing the authors are able to accomplish in this book is in emphasizing the conscious mindfulness required in critical situations, and in distinguishing in observable and real-world ways the specific components of mindfulness as seen in safety-conscious High Reliability Organizations (HROs).
4-0 out of 5 stars Cal State Hayward Student
Good Book - easy read - thorough case studies of Union Pacific merger with Southern Pacific (and how UP botched the job because they didn't plan for the unexpted).Other analogies used: operations on an aircraft carrier, operations in a (nuclear) power plant.
5-0 out of 5 stars Weick strikes again
Drs Weick and Sutcliffe provide a very readable presentation of a complex subject. Geared towards the business audience (but also a good introduction for researchers), it provides a clear outline of the underlying issues in managing complex organizations as well as concrete methods for transforming your organization into one capable of dealing with uncertainty. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Trees
The problem with so many how-to books (this one included) is that they spend page after page telling you what they are going to tell you, then talking to you about what they are about to tell you what it is you are wanting to know ... and then telling you.Oh, yeah:after that they tell you what they already told you.And then the rest of the book is filled with "well this isn't related to our thesis, but you might be interested in this other stuff anyway."
1-0 out of 5 stars Buy E-myth Revised instead
The book E-myth Revised covers more information and is 1/3 the price of this book. Maybe buy this book if you don't understand E-myth and just need it explained to you in different words. Very dissappointed and thought this was a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Jump Start for Business Building!
If you want to actually apply concepts of operations development to your own business, especially if you have 0-20 employees, you'll do well with Carter's book. You'll find short chapters, with simply stated to-do items and an understandable how to guide for setting up business operations. For my money, it's a steal at the price. If you can't glean one, single idea for bettering your business that's worth the 38 bucks, you're not paying attention. I've shaved thousands of dollars off my overhead expenses thanks to Chapter 15 alone. It's a lot of common sense stuff, but it was obviously common sense stuff I wasn't doing very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars REALLY GOOD ROLE MODEL, CHALLENGES HISTORY, MAKES YOU RETHINK AND ANALYZE WHAT LEADERSHIP IS
Leadership is neither a good or bad moral obligation. It is an attitude and action. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said that, if you flinch at the idea that you will hurt somebody, you yourself are already dead. Morality cannot sustain mortality, it inevitable that the idea of your own death, takes precedence over the emotion of war and murder.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Professional Approach
If you're planning to open a bed and breakfast as a hobby or with the notion that "you're not really running a business, you're just making profits in your free time," this is not the book for you. This book covers almost all potential areas that you'll need to know to run a professional B&B, and the level of detail will quickly dissuade anyone who isn't serious. That having been said, anyone who does want to run a professional bed and breakfast will find the information invaluable. The forms included on the enclosed CD pay for the book themselves--everything from employment applications to inventory forms, invoices, standard recipe cards, and kitchen safety inspection forms. The book covers all stages of the planning and setup process, including business plans, marketing and promotion, safety, and employees.Particularly useful is the section on marketing, something that most B&Bs that I've known tend to ignore. With a little creativity (and there are lots of suggestions contained in this chapter), your B&B can become part of the very identity of the neighborhood or city you live in, as in, "If you want to capture the flavor of X, go to this B&B!"The only change I would make to the book would be to make the section on writing business plans a more user friendly for those B&B owners who have never opened a business before.Nevertheless, the book contains lots of hardheaded business sense, presented plainly and clearly, with many good examples of existing B&Bs to illustrate the point. While you may not need all the information included when you first open your business, this book will provide you with lots of options for a time when you're able to expand.I recommend this book to anyone seriously considering going into the B&B business as a business, rather than just a way of pouring money down the drain!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction

2-0 out of 5 stars APromising Start but dissapointing finish
While waiting for my wife to finish shopping at the Tyson's Corner LL Bean store in the Washington DC area, I came across"The Making of LL Bean".Leon Beam, the grandson of LL Bean, weaves an interesting story about his start with the company and his struggles with an entrenched older icon that chooses to rest on his laurels instead of modernizing a family business ["I eat three meals a day, I can't eat four," is one of the elder Bean's more infamous pithy quotations].
5-0 out of 5 stars Bean's Best
Since Mr. Gorman was kind enough to give me a copy of his book, as he did to all his full-time employees, I thought I'd be kind enough to read it.I'm glad I did. This is the finest business autobiography I've read in years.Apart from the wonderful discussion of values--a lot of companies talk about values; at L.L. Bean we live them--what makes this book compelling is its candor and the complex portrait that emerges of founder Leon Leonwood Bean, who, I gather, could be a real bear to work for. There are other delights as well, such as Mr. Gorman's insistence that employees be well-paid and treated with respect, exemplified by the elided quotation: "Superior paying jobs attract superior performing people."How many corporate leaders build that perceptive consideration into their strategic initiatives? Not many, I'm afraid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Balancing tradition against growth...
L. L. Bean is the classic example of the cultural icon company...One that has been around forever, runs by a different set of rules, and has a fanatically loyal customer base.Leon Gorman, the last family member to serve as President of the company, recounts the history and struggles in his book L. L. Bean: The Making of an American Icon. It's an interesting look at how doing a few things correctly can overcome a number of other things done really badly.

I have worked in retail for over seven years in both corporate and small business settings. I'm now conducting marketing research for a souvenir shop. I've read several book and this was by far one of the most helpful. It's an easy read that doesn't take long to finish but is packed full of useful information. I anticipate referring back to it for quite some time for basic information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook
I'm usually very critical of textbooks, but this one reads extremely well. It is clearly organized and progresses in a logical manner. The subject material is inherently difficult, but the authors do an excellent job explaining both the common-sense and mathematical basis for each topic. I have no formal background in finance or accounting but I'm doing well in a 300-level course with just this book to thank. Anyone who wants to educate themselves about stock/bond values, interpreting balance sheets, etc, would benefit greatly from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a hard course

5-0 out of 5 stars Absoulutely Incredible
I ordered 75 books for downtown business owners knowing that this book would be an asset in all of their lives and businesses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Specific advice and examples; from a friend
As a business executive I soon discovered that most of what I really needed to know was passed along by word of mouth- the gold mined through hard experience. Particularly if you are starting a new venture, defining yourself as a leader, or wanting to lead in a way that you feel good about because it brings your beliefs into acton, this book can give you those nuggets of wisdom in a structured way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Practical Risk Management Book Ever!
Allen's book is absolutely phenomenal. Most of the risk management books out there are too technical to be of any practical use. Allen truly focuses on the practice of risk management and gives us insights on how to be a truly good risk manager. Traders could benefit from his insights as well. I particularly liked his breakdown of linear vs. non-linear risks, and liquid vs. non-liquid positions. In terms of the practical risk management of options (vanilla and exotics) I haven't seen anything this clear and this comprehensive. The accompanying CD is an absolute blessing in order to fully understand the concepts like price vol matrices, etc. This should be a required additional reading for all students in financial mathematics/MBA programs around the world! Well Done Mr. Allen!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart, Savvy, Practical
Allen delivers the most insightful look at market risk management for dealers since the Group of 30 Report. While other books are taking on an increasingly bureaucratic tone when it comes to risk management, Allen is refreshingly proactive. I really like the treatment of valuation reserves. His discussion of managing spot, forward and options risks bridges the gap between what a trader is thinking and what a risk manager should be thinking. This isn't a book for the sort of risk manager who hasn't been on the trading floor in a few months. It is a tactical book for the pro who works shoulder to shoulder with quants, traders and salespeople. Note that the book is qualitative. For the quantitative side of all this, see Holton's landmark "Value-at-Risk".

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book on risk management
This is a must buy book for both kinds of people: students or people in academia and practitioners who want to understand different type of risk they face at a macro or micro level. The reasons I like this book on risk management better than thousand others already out there are following. I like to describe this book as having two sections, both the sections are very important and people can focus on either depending on what they are looking for.The first part of the book provides a very good understanding of the risks faced by managers, for example risk managers, head of a trading portolfio or a desk or even CEOs. Very often these people face risk which are hard to quantify or even understand and are not often talked about. The author draws from personal experience and provides interesting case studies,. which makes this part of the book a pleasure to read. I learnt about model risk, reputation risk and other such risks which typically a junior person on a trading desk is not exposed to. So this understanding is very valuable in order to communicate with your boss or to get more insights about risks that management may care about. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful and a good starting point
If you want to sell "stuff" this is a good place to start. All the information is here for opening a store. Follow the steps and your doors will be open. But maybe you don't want to sell "stuff" and have an idea you'd like to try out, if so I recommend "Internet Riches" by Scott Fox.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For the New Startup
This guy knows what he is talking about. I did exactly what he said when I was setting up my on-line business. The only thing was that this book didn't exist then and I had to learn it all one step at a time. Well, I guess that's the only way any of us learn anything.
2-0 out of 5 stars To basic and not enough practical guidance
This book was clearly for beginners only.Although the book says "for dummies", you'd really HAVE to be a dummy to get much out of this. The book is simply too vague when talking about important internet concepts and doen't show you how to REALLY get an online business going.I personally would reccomend 33 Days to Profits by Yank Silverwww.33daystoprofits.com as a much better way to get PRACTICAL advice on starting an online business. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good solid supply chain basics book
We use this book for supply chain training to new entrants at our firm. It is quite a good supply chain basics book - covering the topic in all its breadth. the coverage is perhaps a slightly less strategic and more technical than our needs - but that is understandable given the background of one of the authors. However, to be fair, it is the best book that we have found on supply chain management to get the people up to speed on the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Price too high
What I got was a second Indian Reprint, it costs around $4 in India, but I had to pay around $35 (shippment not inlcuded in this amount)! What an arbitrage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference material for practitioners
I found this book to be a great source of reference for managers. It is not really a good teaching source, as I thought it already starts with a fair amount of assumed previous knowledge and jargon.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not as good as her other book
This book is a fine book if you are looking for the typical book written for lazy minds. The material is good, the presentation is great. However, there is a lack of references and detail that someone really interested in the material will desire. If you like pop-culture books get this one. If you want a ter
