5-0 out of 5 stars Nuts and Bolts of Lean, Six Sigma and more
This book is a ready reference for the practitioner and well deserves its description as a toolbook. It includes top level tips and tools for idea generation, process mapping and data collection. Also provided are more advanced and specialized tools for statistical process control and six sigma, lean tools for reducing lead time and non-value added costs, and the less well known tools for managing operational and portfolio complexity.
3-0 out of 5 stars For reference only
There are good tools, but there is no good detail about them so I could thing as tool box

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lean Six Sigma Pocket Book
This book was a GREAT reference book for understanding Lean Six Sigma tools on Transactional / Service projects. I just completed my Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training through my company. I was one of three individuals (total of 35) within the class that was focused on transactional / service projects. This being the case, the training was geared more towards manufacturing floor Lean Six Sigma tools. Trying to convert these tools from manufacturing to office was VERY difficult. This is were the book came in handy. Not only was a able to make the transaction, but I was able to use these tools to successfully complete my first Black Belt project in the transaction world.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Dummies guide, but not dumbed down
Authors Craig Gygi, Neil DeCarlo and Bruce Williams will attract both plaudits and brickbats for this book (no wonder they needed a foreword from Stephen Covey). Six Sigma, originally devised as a method for reducing production defects, has been elevated to a business cult whose jargon and methods are zealously guarded by a priesthood of consultants. This cadre is bound to regard skeptically any step toward making Six Sigma plain to the general business public. We recommends this manual because it successfully walks the tightrope between detailed technical analysis of Six Sigma methods and common sense terminology that is comprehensible to ordinary oxygen-breathers in the business world. Though it gets too heavy on statistics, it also avoids short cuts and fluffy Six Sigma-lite. The book does not delve into the recent trend toward using Six Sigma for carrying out change initiatives. However, given that its objective is to make professionals Six Sigma literate, this oversight is well within the acceptable range of variation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raving Fans: A revolutionary Approach To Customer Ser
I just read a few of the reviews for this book, Raving Fans that were less than satisfactory.I must say to those who thought after reading this book that it was pointless, simplistic to the point of insulting, disappointing, or over the top, that it's just that exact mentality the whole book is based on.I really hate to color one gender in this fashion but it unfortunately is true, usually it's a man who can't possibly see that the solutions to most customer service problems are just that simplistic. It may seem corny, over the top, or maybe simplistic but this book clearly addresses the problem with customer service today, in that no one cares or is brave enough to venture returning to true customer oriented values, or brave enough to be different. It's all about squeezing that dollar for more than what it's worth, instead of investing that dollar to develop long term loyal customers.Customers that will go out of their way to do business with a provider if the provider cares enough about them to listen to them and give above what they are expecting.I know what I am talking about, I am a customer, and at best I only occasionally see a flicker ofbarely satisfactory customer service actions with the business's I donate my dollars to, but for the most part my customer service experiences are definitely a "No-Customer-Service kinda Customer Service World". Not only am I a customer but I am a customer service provider as well.I have always performed my job with the Raving Fan mentality; I just didn't know what it was called. It's good to know that my work reputation is directly related to providing "Raving Fan" type Customer service. It's too bad that the majority of business's out there are managed by the mentality, that it's all about the dollar and the customer is privileged to have me as a provider.

4-0 out of 5 stars To all the nay sayers.....
See ya, would hate to be your cio/ceo.It's just that simple.change is good, if you don't, bye.i extrapalated the simple concepts to help build the best suite of teams' of employees.Something like i have a vision for my team of managers, and part of that vision is what they need from me, they in turn need to develop their own vision of their team which includes what their team members need from them.By building that type of relationship/team, we can really provide an exceptional product.
4-0 out of 5 stars raving fan
Raving fans is an excellent book for those that are trying to improve their businesses customer service and how the customer is viewed.Although at times it may seem over the top, from a cost analysis basis, even if a business cannot afford the costly improvements, focusing on low to little cost improvements can radically improve your business alone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from other people and other companies mistakes
Learning from other people and other companies mistakes is better than to gain experience through our own mistakes, especially if those are relate to safety.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Master Class In Hazard Avoidance And Mitigation
"What Went Wrong?" is a well thought-out book on practical safety in the chemical processing industry. The book recounts numerous actual process plant accidents and incidents, includes causes and effects, and avoidance and mitigation practices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Itemized Case History of Accidents in the Chemical Industry
What I like most about this book is its index and table of contents. It is easy to find a type of accident. For example, when I turned to page 291, I found an exact, simple description of the dangers resulting from the flow of a non-conducting liquid, i.e., one with a low dielectric constant --- like toluene (2.4 compared to water with a constant of 80). "The danger is that a spark could discharge between a body of liquid and grounded metal." In other words, a high voltage shock will knock you off your feet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only Performance Dashboard book you will ever need.
I found this book through an excellent dashboard [..]. This book proved to be invaluable to my creation of our company's dashboard. I had never created a dashboard before and was able to because of the easy to understand lay out of the book. This book covers different types of dashboards, how to get your data and of couse the creation of a dashboard. This is a great book for the begginer or the seasoned veteran. I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants to create and implement a dashboard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to fully understanding the "Dashboard"
I have designed and implemented "Dashboards" in many forms going back to the time when any vendor with a "portal" product and some widgets claimed they had a "Dashboard" offering. Today, the successful Performance Dashboards truly are effective business management tools with fresh, personalized content based on business goals and processes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information for business managers
This book provides very valuable and practical information for business managers interested in implementing performance dashboards. The author does a great job explaining the different types of performance dashboards and the key requirements for successfully creating them. Real examples are used to illustrate the main points. I found the "Assessing Your Organizational Readiness" and "Critical Success Factors - Tips from the Trenches" sections to be especially useful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lean Six Sigma
Having worked for a company that really made Six Sigma work, I was very interested in an extension of the processes. The process described has a lot of potential but the whole thing still revolves around a management cadre that are interested in the people and business output (business of business) of the company before profits.I recommend the book: it's an easy read and if you are interested in improving the performance of a business has some good ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lean Six Sigma
The book is a small but effective book for people who want to know what Lean Six Sigma is.It covers the basic concepts of the methodology and is very good at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, well written....nice to read.
Mr. Niven has done an excellent job. It is easier and more entertaining to read his book than the books by the masters of BSC (Kaplan and Norton).
5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step: Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results

Suggest you test your digital capability to download eBooks and open themby using Acrobat's "File\Digital Editions\Authorize Devices" before buying as Acrobat now requires a drm activation on each computer by computer and this apparently has to be transferred one to the other, and the worst part is that they apparently have major problems with their drm activation server such that I have been unable to get my "instant" pdf book for two days now. There many entries in the Adobe forum on this issue. The book involved is the Balanced Scorecard Step-by-step.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good solid supply chain basics book
We use this book for supply chain training to new entrants at our firm. It is quite a good supply chain basics book - covering the topic in all its breadth. the coverage is perhaps a slightly less strategic and more technical than our needs - but that is understandable given the background of one of the authors. However, to be fair, it is the best book that we have found on supply chain management to get the people up to speed on the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Price too high

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the 21st century
Niven is one of the best authors on BSC. If this administration and communications tool has been hailed as one the best new concepts in the business world, in nonprofit and government administration it can have even more impact. It is a great general introduction, but even seasoned experts will find enlightenment and a great very updated bibliography. Works very well as a textbook for nonprofit management with HBS cases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, informative and highly implementable advice
Although the Balanced Scorecard has taken over performance mangagement thinking in business, its linkages and adaptability to public and non-profit organizations has remained extremely challenging. I currently am resposible for leading planning and strategy development for a large social services provider in Canada.Being a strong proponent of Balanced Scorecard theory, I anxiously waited two months for Paul Niven's latest book to hit the shelves in hope that I could adapt the balanced scorecard approach to evaluate our organization's strategy. Long story short >> Balanced Scorecard for Government and Nonprofit Agencies was an incredible investment, and we are now on the way to better measuring and reporting on our organization's progress with the help of this book's advice, tips and proecess design steps.4-0 out of 5 stars Good & Practical Book on Balanced Scorecard
I've read most of the literature on the Balanced Scorecard and the previous books by Norton & Kaplan and Paul Niven himself.Being a Management Consultant of 15 years, I worked with numerous for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and have the usual skepticism towards theory books. This latest book on Balanced Scorecardwas easy-to-read with numerous examples from Balanced Scorecard implementations in public sector.I found the step-by-step approach to be practical and quite down-to-earth with numerous take aways for a reader interested in BSC or a performance management practitioner, like myself. The book rightly touches upon the challenges in the scorecard implementations, and offers valuable advice. If you haven't read any previous books on this subject, you can read this book alone for a good idea on what the Balanced Scorecard is all about, and how you go about its implementation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for a beginning text
I have this book as my text in the Business program at the University of Phoenix. I am not a supply chain manager and do not aspire to be, but it is a required course. Some of the math is a bit daunting (the phrase "using simple calculus" is an oxymoron to many) but even without knowing calculus the case studies and discussions convey the fundamentals effectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Phenomenon
Words can not explain how much this book is valuable. Its pragmatic approach to supply chain is wonderful. I am sure any reader will have the same idea after reading this book. I really appreciate this great job. Special thanks to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A super way to break through the seemingly intractable sales and marketing issues with a common sense approach.
Process improvement efforts often bounce off or go around sales and marketing functions because it is not obvious how to apply process thinking here.Yet this is precisely where a substantial portion of the headcount and expense is for many high tech and service companies.Improving sales and marketing processes, even incrementally, is the biggest opportunity to make a measureable difference to the bottom line.Mike Webb uses clear thinking and layman's terms to show how sales and marketing can be managed, grown and expanded by incorporating the basics of Six Sigma thinking: fact-based decision making and a focus on the customer's actions. The result is sales and marketing programs that stick, selling methods that produce and customer relationships that endure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for not only Marketing/Sales/QA managers, but for all senior executives and MBA students.
Most CEOs/COOs/CFOs would agree:
5-0 out of 5 stars Uncommon Sense Guide to Sales Process Improvement

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic on Quality

5-0 out of 5 stars No Title
Deming's 14 points are able to take any company and make them into an efficient organization that can endure any type of problem. This book is great because it can apply to large manufacturing companies or it can apply to small independently owned buisnesses.Deming teaches managers to stop looking at the individual numbers from day to day, and start looking at the numbers in the future. One of the best aspects of the book that I enjoyed was the how Deming believes workers should be treated. He believes that taking the fear out of the workplace will actually make the employees have pride in their workmanship and this will in turn increase production. This is a great book for any manager from large or small company

4-0 out of 5 stars Tal .N.
Published in 1986, Dr. Deming "Out of the Crisis" seems to form the basis for the transformation needed in American management mentality. Two main subjects are discussed in the book. The first is the exposure of problems and pitfalls in top management operations, the second, relates suggestions and solutions that can solve and transform the way American management operates. 14 core points are suggested by Dr. Deming to address problems in management and are supported by many examples using different scientific methods.
