    Editorial Review

Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out anenergetic young boy? Well, if you're going to go around giving an exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd best be prepared to do one or two more favors for it before your day is through. For example, he'll certainly need a glass of milk to wash down that cookie, won't he? And you can't expect him to drink the milk without a straw, can you? By the time our hero is finished granting all the mouse's very urgent requests--and cleaning up after him--it's no wonder his head is becoming a bit heavy. Laura Joffe Numeroff's tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the giggle-generator category. But concerned parents can rest assured, there's even a little education thrown in for good measure: underneath the folly rest valuable lessons about cause and effect. Felicia Bond's hilarious pictures are full of subtle, fun details. Fans will be happy to know that this dynamic author-illustrator pair teamed up again for Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book everrrrrr!!
This was a favorite of mine when i was younger, and that has not changed as i have grown older. "If you give a mouse a cookie" is an amazing book. It is funny, interesting, and an all around good children's book. I recomend this book to anyone who has kids or enjoys kids books. It is also a well illustrated book which makes it even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Favorite
My 3 year old son and I love this book.We can't decide which we like more - this one or Numeroff's other book "If Give GiveMoose a Muffin".Unlike some children's books, both the text and illustrations are equally enjoyable. It's especially fun to see how the animals boss the children around and tie them out.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you give a child this book...
...make sure to have cookies and milk to share right after you are done reading it! What a fun book for preschoolers and a good book for introducing sequence of events. One of my son's favorites. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Charlie Bone Book
It' about this boy named Charlie Bone and he has to find the Mirror of Amoret before The Shadow takes his mother away. What I liked the best about this book was that there was always a new surprise around the corner. What i disliked about the book was that the ending just left you hanging. It didn't really finish the way I thought it would, but it was still really exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good book
Not sure if this is the last book in the series or not. It ends abruptly. However, it was a good book to read, so 4 stars. I had Artemis Fowl, and 2 Charlie Bone books at the same time. I read all, but my kids dropped Charlie in favor of Artemis. Hence the 4 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the Ending
This book is, as usual, Charlie Bone and his adventures. Unlike the other books, this one is not about keeping some child secret from the bloors but stoping a horrible creature from destroying the city: The Shadow from the Red King's painting. In his quest to stop the shadow, Charlie encounters magic mirrors, frozen relatives, disappearing animals, a witch disquised as a teacher, and many more. Want to know more? Read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures Are Worth A 1000 Words
Charlie Bone isn't your typical nine-year-old boy.Although he didn't know that himself. But when photographs get mixed up and he ends up with a picture of a man and a little girl that talks to him, he knows everything that was normal about his life is gone forever.Tracking down the picture, Charlie finds out it belongs to Miss Ingledew, a woman who owns a bookshop and has been looking for her missing niece for years. She gives Charlie a mysterious package (that he can't open) and sets him on his journey that will change everything in his world. As it turns out, Charlie is one of the descendants of the Red King, a mysterious person who had wondrous magical powers who went into hiding. The Red King's children have been equally divided between good and evil ever since. At Bloor's Academy, Charlie finds friends and enemies, and the challenge of his lifetime as he tracks down secrets others don't want revealed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginning to Series
Ten year old Charlie Bone discovers he has a unique talent - he can hear the thoughts of people in photographs. Charlie's Grandmother Bone and her sisters are delighted that Charlie has inherited powers, the gift runs in the family and his late father also was one of the "endowed". They insist that Charlie attend Bloor's Academy where he can further develop his powers. Charlie reluctantly goes and soon realizes there are odd things going on at Bloor's. Before he quite knows exactly what is going on, Charlie is deep in a mystery involving a case with something mysterious inside it and a missing child and also discovers his father may not be dead after all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wickedly Funny
Charlie Bone likes soccer and TV, but not much else. He likes to hang out with his next-door neighbor and best friend, Benjamin Brown, and Benjamin's dog, Runner Bean. For Charlie, life is pretty good.

    Editorial Review

When 11-year-old Marty Preston chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia, he is not prepared for the ethical questions he has to face. Should he return the dog to its owner, only to have the animal abused again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food to help the poor creature? Marty's efforts to cope with these questions provides the moral backbone for this story, which is presented in a language and manner that will be understood by third- and fourth-grade readers. The heart and beauty of this 1992 Newbery Medal winner lies in lessons children will take away with them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Deserved Newbery Winner,But Some Reservations
Shiloh is the winner of the 1992 Newbery Medal, and it tells the story of Marty Preston, an 11-year-old boy, and his efforts to rescue a mistreated beagle, Shiloh. Though Marty believes Shiloh came to him for help, his father makes it clear that he must not interfere in their neighbor's business, even if that neighbor is Judd Travers, a thoroughly unlikable man who abuses his dogs. When Shiloh comes to him a second time though, Marty has to choose between his love for Shiloh or obedience to his father. Though I had to do some minor editing while reading aloud to my preschool-aged children, this is a very engaging story full of struggle, devotion, and suspense that had my son (and hubby) begging for more.Naylor expertly reeled us in from the first chapter as we got wrapped up in Marty's concern for Shiloh and she kept us expectantly turning the pages to find out what would happen next.

Eleven-year-old Marty lives with his parents and two younger sisters just above Friendly, West Virginia. Marty finds a dog and he is convinced that the dog is abused by its owner. He wants to keep Shiloh, but he has to strike a deal with Shiloh's owner, Judd Travers.

5-0 out of 5 stars War Games
Another exciting installment in this series from the outrageously creative and slightly warped mind of Garth Nix, where Lord Arthur, Rightful Heir of the Architect etc. etc. finds himself drafted into the Glorious Army of the Architect under the command of the highly strung Sir Thursday.Starting at the bottom, Arthur changes his name to Ray, and undergoes basic training in weaponry and warfare before being led off to battle.
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I love his books (sabriel...) i've read all his books so far they are wonderful. LOVE IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly life changing experience
Sir Thursday is a great adventure book.It has many battles with Nithlings a type of creature made of "nothing". A type of liquidy material that can be enriched into almost anything you want it to and is hazardous to the touch. Arthur Penhaligon was a normal boy until about noon on Monday when he found the key to the lower reaches then was cast into the house a secondary realm. The will (an item that is very wise and was made by the architect) has chosen Arthur to be the rightful heir to the throne. TheArchitect is the God of the house and made everything. She had two sons Superior Sundayand the Piper.Sunday betrayed Piper with his minion Saturday when they threw him into nothing. He should have died but he didn't and no one knows why. But if you like action books with great plots you should buy this book because it has both.

2-0 out of 5 stars Twisting book that can probbably hurt the mind
This book was very interesting, however it had too many things going on at once. It was hard for me to follow. It had a lot of action, but it was confusing and hard to follow. I like the red king series, but this was the worst of the five. Plus, it was a total Harry Potter wannabe. If you liked this book, the GREAT! Go pick up a harry potter book instead. You'll like it 10x as much. Trust me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Through The Years
The problems at Bloor Academy intensify for young Charlie Bone in this second adventure.Poor Henry Yewbeam, actually Charlie's great-granduncle, goes missing from the year 1916 and turns up in the present.Charlie discovers his distant relative and the powerful Time Twister that allowed him to make his incredible journey.Unfortunately, it doesn't take long before Manfred Bloor, his father, and grandfather pick up the trail.Things get very complicated as Charlie keeps losing Henry while trying to figure out the riddle of the Time Twister.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Fantasy!!
How can one describe these books?? They are some of the greatest fantasy I have ever seen (and I read a lot!).The scenes of Death...in the Old Kingdom...especially the characters of Mogget and the Disreputable Dog in _Lirael_ and _Abhorsen_ are all fantastic and imaginative.Words cannot describe it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and strong
This trilogy is satisfying and surprising in the strength of its female characters while never losing sight of a good story.Fantasy at its finest...you get parallel worlds, magic, mundanity, and misunderstanding, but not to comic effect, rather to catastrophic endings.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible, Boring Book
The whole idea of checking this book out from the library began when I realized that this story I was writing had a pretty similar plot as the story: a bunch of kids with these talents get called up to go to a special school, where they have their own rooms.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW JENNY NIMMO
this story was great. It was jam packed with action I couldn't stop reading the book. It is a story of a boy whose family is made up of him, his mother, his nice grandma, and his grandma bone, who is always in his business. I suggest this book to anyone who lke stories that are full of adventure and have mystery

2-0 out of 5 stars The "Bad Apple" of the series
Now, before the "Castle if Mirrors", I was a big Charlie Bone fan, I could not wait for this book to come out.All of the other books had unique interesting plots. However by the time Nimmo got to this book, she lost her touch. For example, this book had way to much "Harry Potter" take offs, which you could easily find if youve read both books and paid even the slightest attention. Also so much of the information in this book was completely pointless and overloaded (unless she plans to use it for her later books. And what was really corny wasthe whole new thing about one of the characters whohas already been in the other books has just suddenly gained a power. 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent start to what looks to be an excellent trilogy
Jenny Nimmo does several things very well, but what she does best (in this reviewer's humble opinion) is create believable and unique "systems of magic" for her books. That just might be the most difficult task for an author trying to write fantasy, because thousands of fantasy books have been written, and virtually every conceivable method that could be construed as magic seems to have been used.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Snow Spider
The book I have chosen to read is The Snow Spider, by Jenny Nimmo. I guess I would have to summarize this story by saying the main theme of this book is about a boy named Gwyn who sets out on a journey to find his sister who everyone thinks has died.He also discovers special abilities he has as a magician.Ultimately, a special snow spider will help Gwyn with both of these issues.

British boy with catchy name and unusual powers, check. Wild hair, check. Students at boarding school, check. Owls and funny street names, check. Mysterious shape-shifting enemies out to get the affable boy protagonist, check. Jenny Nimmo's"Children of the Red King" series (starring Charlie Bone) has so many ofthe same trappings as the Harry Potter series that, unfortunately, comparison is unavoidable. Rowling's books clearly trump these simpler fantasies for younger readers--but the Charlie Bone books are finding their audience in those who need a boy-wizard fix and need it now.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Charlie Bone (the american Englishman)
I really enjoy this series, it's a great to read while waiting for the next Harry Potter book. These books are written for younger children, so there is pretty much no thinking involved (always a plus) and it is a breeze to read.I will admit that it is very much like Harry Potter, but Charlie Bone is a fun read anyway. The only thing that kept this book from being five stars is the annoying fact that they still haven't got a clue who Charlie's father is.I haven't read the 4th or 5th one yet, but it is still painstakeingly obvious that Mr. Pilgrim is Charlie's father.Anyone with half a brain could figure that one out.Just think about it, and you have to admit that it totally makes sense. It just bugs me that these people who are always solving all of these other mysteries can't see what is right in front of their noses. How stupid can you be?How on earth can you not see that Mr. Pilgrim is Charlie's dad!AAARRGG!Another thing that bugs me is the fact that even though the setting for this book is England, no one says any English stuff, like mum or whatever. They are so American sounding!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Invisible Boy
Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy written by Jenny Nimmo is a great book. It is a really cool fantasy book. It is an outstanding mystery-like story about a boy named Charlie and his friends Emma, Fidelio, Gabriel, Billy, and others all trying to make it through another tough semester at Bloor's Academy. You see Charlie is endowed with special powers. His endowment is that when he looks into a photograph he somehow becomes part of the picture. One day while investigating the Bloor's campus Charlie discovered an invisible boy, Ollie Sparks, living in the attic. Ollie had been squeezed by the 'blue boa' and now he is completely invisible, except for his big toe!!! Now Charlie will do anyhting to make him visible and reunite him with his brother who is the art teacher at Bloor's, Mr. Boldvoka. When Charlie's only hope of help, his Uncle Paton, goes missing Charlie must face all of the adventures on his own. What happens then his 'star witness' Mr. Bolvoka disappears as well? Read the book to find out. ... Read more

The book I chose to read is called The Borrowers, written by Mary Norton.I would have to say that the main conflict or theme to this story is about a girl named Arrintrey. She starts on a jouney to find or get in touch with members of her family who live far away with the help of a special boy.Throughout this journey they help one another and become good friends who rely on each other very much.

Did you know that the real reason for human beans is to Keep Borrowers--unwittingly of course--supplied with oddments and bits of foot, hat and water?Mary Norton's children's classic remains as delightfully fresh and entrancing today as it did when it first appeared in 1953.Recounted by an insightful, elderly Mrs. May to a little girl, the story takes place in a country house in turn-of-the-century England. The author introduces her readers to a hidden race of little people called Borrowers--well, They don't consider it Stealing! Even their last names are borrowed--depending on where in the house they take up secret residence:Avoiding detection by the "human beans" on whom they rely

5-0 out of 5 stars Drowned Wednesday is WONDERFUL!!!!
Drowned Wednesday, the 3rd book in The Keys to the Kingdom series, by Garth Nix, is a fantastically original read. (It is the 3rd book in the series, so you do have to start with the first book in the series, Mister Monday.) The characters are very well developed, and it is just as exciting as the previous books in the series. This book is a great blend of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Adventure that you will not forget! I can't wait to get my hands on the 4rth one in the series!
5-0 out of 5 stars a great bedtime adventure
I have read each of the Keys to the Kingdom books to my [...] every night before bed. We just finished Wens. and are looking forward to starting Thurs. I think the books are a great read even for younger kids who enjoy adventure books, if the parents are willing to help out the reader with the tougher words. I would strongly reccomend these books to children of any age, but also caution that some situation might be a little too scary if your child isn't used to "older" books. We read the Harry Potter series first and it is no scarier then that series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Whale
Wednesday being the third day of the week (if you don't start at Sunday of course), there are no prizes for guessing that this is book three of The Keys to the Kingdom series. If you haven't read Mister Monday and Grim Tuesday, please look no further - without the two preceding books you'll be up a creek without a paddle if you try this one on its own.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you were a writer, this is what you'd do
This book begins with the statement that "Melia's mother was a writer,' and Melia wants to be one, too.Her mother explains to her the kind of things she would do if she were a writer. She would work with words and think of the right ones to use.She would *show* a story, not tell about it.She would let the storyline gell in her mind before writing it down.Melia's mother also gives her some tips on how to get started and how to get ideas from the world around her. By the end of the book, Melia practices doing each task and is on her way to becoming a writer.

This story is about a young girl who's mother is a writer. The girl watches her mother work and picks up pointers on things that writers do.The girl then starts some writing of her own.As a teacher, I have foundthat, this book inspires my students to become writers and it is wonderfulto use with "writer's workshop." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars the drive behind the story too similar to Mister Monday
After _Mister Monday_, I was hoping the author would take _Grim Tuesday_ a step further and really draw the readers into the story.I wanted to know more about the House and the Will, and see Arthur and Suzy really grow as characters.Unfortunately, none of those things happened.Arthur and Suzy seem exactly the same as before, the drive behind the story is exactly the same (Arthur needs to get the Keys in order to save his family), and that made the story very predictable and boring.Disappointing.
4-0 out of 5 stars And you thought Mondays were bad
If you're going to read this book, I strongly recommend that you make sure that you've read "Mister Monday" first. That way you see, I don't have to explain all about the Architect and the Will, and the seven hidden fragments and the treacherous trustees and all that.Just call me lazy if you like.
5-0 out of 5 stars another fun read by an author with great imagination (4.5 stars)

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I love this book. I also love the sequils! I read the first one in fourth grade and I read the other two in the summer time. I thought all the books were sad espectially this one. judd is a rude selfish and absolutely unkind resident. I just feel so bad about what people in the book had to go through. he steels and lies and never bothers to help anyone! if you like the first book you'll like all of them! ... Read more
