4-0 out of 5 stars Im a bird
Im a bird.Eldest was a really good book, but the 1st book, Eragon, was much better.Eldest had a lot less action, and it took too much time talking about Eragons studies, and less about anything else about the Varden or Dwarves. The side story about Roran, Eragons cousin, was more exciting. As it got further towards the end, it was much more interesting and had more action, and was easier to read.the end of the book made me want to read the 3rd book because it left many things unanswered, like who the third dragon egg will hatch for.It was an overall great book, but not enough action in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn, Yawn, Yawn.....
Well, I picked up Eragon because I heard it was pretty good. I was in the need of an original book, so I figured I would give it a try. It turned out ok. I was impressed with the age of the author, but was also dissapointed on how much of his ideas were not original. Still, there was something fun about a jedi dragon rider.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and inspiring
I was partly prejudiced when I first picked up Eragon, having read about the authors age of only 15 when he wrote the book. I expected something much more amature than what I read.I was amazed how he spun such a wonderful tale, so wonderfully descriptive, exciting, and created an endearing main character that had many flaws, and LOTS of room to grow.Paolini has a lot of natural talent and has only begun to explore his potential.I hope he will continue writing long after this trilogy is over.

4-0 out of 5 stars A prett decent Pratchett effort
Terry Pratchett has been a bit hit amd miss for me of late, but I do always enjoy the Tiffany adventures. This is definitely one of his best efforts of recent times. It's better than A Hat Full Of Sky (which I did like) but not as enjoyable as some of his darker efforts. This is an easy read full of Pratchett's trademark wit. I preferred Thud in terms of story and tone, but for an easy read Wintersmith can't be faulted. It's not too heavy going and will probably go down as the wittiest fantasy read of 2006 along with The Book With No Name. There's nothing particularly straying away from the tried and tested formula, but if you know what you like about Pratchett, then you should already know if you're gonna like this.
5-0 out of 5 stars Crivens! Another one!
I love the Tiffanny Aching Adventures, so I was really glad when my brother gave me Wintersmith for my birthday. Now would probably be a good time to tell you that I am writing this on my father's account. My name is Charlotte Moore and I think that Terry Pratchett is a genius. I have read his equally good books A Hat Full of Sky, The Wee Free Men, and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Boffo Book
It's hard to understand how he does it, but with each book he writes Terry Pratchett out does himself. Each book is even better than the last. And this is certainly the best book of the Tiffany Aching series.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
I have been reading books since I was 2 years old and this is one of the best books i have read. It dosn't matter who the auther is or how old he is it just matters if you like the book. I'm 12 now and like I said this book is really, really good. The authur did A good job and that is why it is a new york times best seller!
5-0 out of 5 stars Eragon the best
Eragon is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read so far.It has all of the qualities of a fantasy book I look for.Compared to Harry Potter it has a great story line with a quick learning character. It has battles, magic, dragons, and monstrous creatures.Christopher Paolini is one of the best authors I've heard of, because he uses great imagery, awesome descriptions, and he keeps you intrigued through the whole book.I recommend this book to any fantasy lover adult, teen, or child.I do understand that this is one of the best accomplishments among someone of young age. So if you love fantasy or you just want a classic in motion take up Eragon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the hype!
I purchased and read this book just after it first came out to rave reviews and a New York Times Bestseller ranking.I was extremely dissappointed. There is a reason that there are not many well renowned 18 year old authors out there. The writing is poor at best - definitely the work of someone who is just learning the art.The story is entertaining at times, but as many other reviewers have mentioned, it is entirely unoriginal. This book is fine for the younger child but is not in the class of Paul Park's Princess of Roumania, The Golden Compass trilogy or Harry Potter as books that transcend the line between children's and adult literature.I did not read the second book and have no intention of doing so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Owns a piece of my soul
I read the book for the first time when I was 9 years old. I dig it out every few years and re read it. To this day it still has the power to reduce me to tears.
4-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of friendship
Published in the 70's, this book was an instant children's classic in American literature. This book deals with the friendship of a boy, Jesse, and a girl, Leslie, both of whom are social outcasts.Coming from different families and upbringings, they form a friendship that bears the strain of tragedy. This reviewer read this book while in elementary school; but revisited it once I heard that a movie was being made about it.The book is very good, and is great for children to read in today's culture where intergender relationships are often characterized in terms of sex.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad, yet beautiful
One of my favorite parts of parenting is rediscovering wonderful children's literature with my daughters. I had heard of this book but never read it, so when my daughter chose it for a book report I seized the opportunity to read an award-winning book that I had neglected.

In the epic trilogy His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to worlds parallel to our own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn't destroyed first. The three books in Pullman's heroic fantasy series, published as mass-market paperbacks with new covers, are united here in one boxed set that includes Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful novels, and deeply spiritual
These novels are wonderful: an astonishing concept, utterly believable characters, great plot-lines, and beautifully written.
5-0 out of 5 stars after His Dark Materials.... (from my blog)
I cannot paraphrase the story in any way that would do it justice. Pullman is beyond me; the story was too rich, too powerful, too complex and subtle and ambitious, and it had to be to be equal to what I now sit here wishing I could convey to you.
5-0 out of 5 stars A grand metaphysical journey with convincing characters and details
I just finished reading this grand trilogy to my kids, aged 8, 10, and 12.My wife ended up sitting in on almost the entire series, and all of us were riveted from Oxford to the World of the Dead and back again. These books are incredibly ambitious: they set out to stitch together a religio-political history of the multiverse with deep, informed reference to physics, religious history, adolescent psychology, Nietzschean heroism, etc. etc. etc.The result, as I read it, is one of the most compelling indictments of church and state ever written for a broad audience.Author Philip Pullman concludes, without didactic hamfistedness, that the first purpose of churches and governments is self-perpetuation through maintaining the ignorance of their adherents and citizens. The greatest wisdom and joy, in Pullman's worlds, comes of full, mortal, bodily engagement with the physical world per se: with domestic comforts, food, sex, art, aesthetic involvement, work well done, craft, cleverness, etc.The well-earned consciousness of a human adult, earned through Blakean experience, is the crowning moment of all creation.Antithetical to this wisdom and consciousness is dogmatic narowness, asceticism, monasticism, self-denial, narrowness of experience.

It's good to know that parents on this sight are changing the words of this book to protect their children from such harsh words....God knows they will NEVER hear anything like this while in school!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones
Yes, we all agree that the language is not what we want our children to speak, but after all we are reading a book. That's it a Book! These books are adored by my children and they know that they are just books telling a story.Isn't that what we read for, to hear a story, to build our imagination and to dream. If we as parents are doing our job, our children should know not to act like books they read, tv shows they watch (how about MTV) or movies they see.Thats what they are stories.I recommend these books highly. For all the nay sayers, I am sure that you guys don't watch anything such as Desperate Housewives, Soaps etc. Perfect as we like to think we are, it is all about making a choice, your choice!

1-0 out of 5 stars Junie's rude and I can't find anyting that redeems her.
Why someone would chose these books is beyond me, especially when there are so many other good choices. Literature has an impact on people and the only impact I can imagine Junie having on others is negative.

I bought this box set because of readers reviews & I could not be more happy. My son follows me around the house and has asked me at 7am to read more Captain Underpants, how can I say no... he loves it and we love it too.The author does a great job presenting the stories in a way kids and parents will love.I am waiting to see an ACME product in the book to along with the PATSY 2000, 3-D imaging machine.

Funny ,Yet Bawdy reading. My seven year old brought one of these home from the school library one day. Although initially shocked by the bathroom humour in the book I realized my son was reading as fast as he could. This is the adult equivalent of a "couldn't put it down" novel. I purchased the 5 book series and tried rationing the books over a week or so. Let me tell you , he wanted the next book as soon as he finished the previous one.It is important to note that this should not be the only type of reading your child should do, I look at these books a kind of a fun playful reward, like a movie or music.

My daughter discovered the Captain Underpants series a couple of months ago and I have to say, at first I wasn't sure I wanted to encourage her reading nonsense material. When I read the titles of the books, I had such a laugh and it really hit me why some kids love these books--they are sooo funny and it's exactly the kind of thing that a attracts a child.Kids love potty talk and silly pictures and the seeing Harold and his friend get into constant trouble with the principle at their school. These jokesters are forever playing pranks and trying to get themselves out of trouble.Yes, it's complete nonsense, but, it got my daugther to read chapter books!she's hooked. She loves to read and it's her love for reading that I'm encouraging not the nonsense. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars These books are great....especially for younger kids
My 6 year old daughter and I have started reading the first box set (I read them to her older sister at this age). They are very funny and even when I read a passage that is not "correct English" my daughter will laugh because she knows that's not the way you talk. That's what makes it so funny. We just finished Sneaky-Peaky Spying which is one of my favorites. How horrible is it to a little kid when she thinks she sees her Teacher stealing grapes at the grocery store???I highly recommend this collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones is the koolestess 6 year-old on the hole planit!!!!
Yes, I know there are typos in the title. Yes, I intended them. If you can't get over them, you aren't quite as mature as is Junie B. Jones. My daughter is 6 and in first grade. We discovered the Junie B. Jones series when one was sent home in her reading folder for homework. Thank you to her teacher for sending that book. We have since read every title we can find in the series. While I'm reading to our daughter, my wife is laughing from the other room as she tries to listen to Junie B.'s wonderful antics. While she is learning to spell (just like my daughter) she is wise beyond her ears (as Junie would say). Reviewers of these books who can't get over Junie's use of grammar are missing the point. The stories have wonderful themes and Junie always learns the right lesson by the last chapter, despite her best efforts. Each and every title fits the world of a first grader to a T. My daughter is getting 5 more titles for Christmas this year. Please don't tell her. I want it to be a surprise! If I can let you in on a secret, I'm looking forward to her getting them, too...and my mother was such a strict grammarian that she wouldn't even let me use an adverb incorrect. JOKE!!!!!!!!!

Since reviewers need to be over 13, I'll type my 6-year-old son's comments.Henry says:I found it very funny.I thought it was hilarious. The Flip-o-ramas were good and the whole book was awesome.I've read all of the CU books, as well as the Ricky Ricotta books up to book 7, and I would say this one isn't the best, but it's awfully good.It was funny when Boxer Boy and Great Granny Girdle kissed. ... Before I begin reviewing this book I must tell you that I am not Charles Moore but his daughter who loves the Tiffany Aching books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Discworld
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
5-0 out of 5 stars another amazing Pratchet book
This book is the sequel to another book called the Wee Free Men{ignore the bad title- it is also a great book] so you should probably read that first. But this book blows every other Pratchet book away. Besides being extremely hillarious, it is also surprisingly heart-warming, and will delight anyone who likes an exciting, well-written fantasy. You won't want to put it down till the very end. It leaves you with tingles inside. If you are looking for a good fantasy book, buy this immediately! ... Read more

This was my first purchase from Amazon and I was very pleased with the professional service and the quick delivery of my order

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple for every home library
How wonderful it has been to get reintroduced to all of Potter's sweet characters. My mom had a small board book collection when I was growing up and I forgot all about these stories. There is just something so warm and relaxing about them.My four year old is loving them (they're a bit too long for my two year old's attention span and she usually wanders away after awhile). However you just can't go wrong with this book--it's a classic and definitely timeless. My only suggestion is that sometimes a "complete" edition is the cheaper route to go, but it does make for a heavy book for little ones to tote around or try to flip through. So if you are looking for something to be a more kid friendly you may want to purchase the individual stories separately.

    Editorial Review

Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching needs magic--fast! Her sticky little brother Wentworth has been spirited away by the evil Queen of faerie, and it’s up to her to get him back safely. Having already decided to grow up to be a witch, now all Tiffany has to do is find her power. But she quickly learns that it’s not all black cats and broomsticks. According to her witchy mentor Miss Tick, "Witches don’t use magic unless they really have to...We do other things. A witch pays attention to everything that’s going on...A witch uses her head...A witch always has a piece of string!" Luckily, besides her trusty string, Tiffany’s also got the Nac Mac Feegles, or the Wee Free Men on her side. Small, blue, and heavily tattooed, the Feegles love nothing more than a good fight except maybe a drop of strong drink! Tiffany, heavily armed with an iron skillet, the feisty Feegles, and a talking toad on loan from Miss Tick, is a formidable adversary. But the Queen has a few tricks of her own, most of them deadly. Tiffany and the Feegles might get more than they bargained for on the flip side of Faerie!Prolific fantasy author Terry Pratchett has served up another delicious helping of his famed Discworld fare. The not-quite-teen set will delight in the Feegles’ spicy, irreverent dialogue and Tiffany’s salty determination. Novices to Pratchett’s prose will find much to like here, and quickly go back to devour the rest of his Discworld offerings. Scrumptiously recommended. (Ages 10 to 14) Read more

This was certainly no Harry Potter. It was a cute little story, mind you, but I don't think it was as fabulous as the reviews lead you to believe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, well exceeded my expectations
While the story starts out rather conventionally, the wee free men are a wonder, and the world you are drawn into is far more interesting, delightful and sophisticated than I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Homerun for Boys
There are soooo many series books for girls (Amer Girl, Junie B, blah blah blah) but very few chapter books that boys eat up.These Captain Underpants books are great! My son got his first box set of these from his grandma (who's a librarian) for his 5th birthday.I think that's the perfect age to get introduced to this series.Yes, I might prefer that my son read more classic books, but he absolutely LOVES these! He giggles & begs for another chapter (which are very short, which is nice).Give these a try, they are perfect for kindergarden thru 2nd grade boys.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it...
