5-0 out of 5 stars A young lad on a fearless journey in search of his mother
Maurice Sendak's "Mommy?" is an interesting pop-up book which deals with a young lad dressed in blue and red attire who encounters some strange creatures in search of his mother. Among the creatures that this lad encounters as he enters a haunted house, we have a wolf-man, a Frankenstein's monster, a Bride of Frankenstein, a mummy, and a goblin. Each of these individuals are addressed the following question, "Mommy?" Some of the monsters try to scare and impale the lad, but not only is the lad not scared, he pulls some rather amusing jokes, mostly consisting of the disfiguring of their protective coverings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I've been a Sendak junkie since I was a kid. His books have always been among my vary favorites, and I'm happy to say they're among my kids' favorites as well. I also love pop-ups, so I was really escited to learn about this book. And I must say, my expectations have been surpassed.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Amazingly intricate Pop-up Book.
My kids and I love pop-up books, and I love paper engineering and building castles and palaces out of paper. When I read this book, I was amazed at how intricate the pop-ups were.Whereas most pop-up books may have 5 or so different pieces of paper on each page, this book has what looks to be 3 to 5 times that number of different small pieces of paper that all interconnect and make an amazing picture.I can't believe they were able to produce this book for the retail price!Surely it can't be by machine?Anyways, your kids will love it, although younger ones will need help closing the pages so that the pieces don't get mangled.I might buy 2 - one for the kids to read and probably destroy, and 1 for my collection.Highly recommended if you love pop-up books! ... "How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite in our house!
My son got this book and the matching stuffed dinosaur when he was 2. I think that was the start of his dinosaur obsession! :) We love this book and a year later we still read it all the time. He has the whole book memorized and can "read" it to us. We have started to acquire some of the other "How Do Dinosaur" books but this will probably always be the favorite. It's a great book!! We love the pictures and the story!!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love It!
How could this book not recieve 5 stars? My first encounter I had with this book was at a daycare I worked at for the 2 year olds and they always requested it and loved it. Of course after reading it so many times it became memorized and they would help by shouting out words here and there. I loved it so much I made it a point to get it for my daughter and she has the same reaction. We read it every night and she knows the story, acting it out and recalling parts here and there. I got the paper back because it was cheaper but we'll be getting the hard back soon due to so much use. Definitely a title that should be included in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars We read this book every night
My 3 year old son absolutely loves this book. We have to read it every night at bed time, he has it memorized for the most part so he "reads" along with me while I am reading it to him.

    Editorial Review

Among the greatest charms of children is their ability to view a simple activity as a magical adventure. Such as a walk in the woods late at night. Jane Yolen captures this wonderment in a book whose charm rises from its simplicity. "It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling." The two walked through the woods with nothing but hope and each other in a journey that will fascinate many a child. John Schoenherr's illustrations help bring richness to the countryside adventure. The book won the 1988 Caldecott Medal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
My 4 1/2 year old grandson LOVES this book. His "usual choice" in books is one with LOTS of action. This book appeals to his love of family and animals. He now asks to go "owling" - and we plan to take him! There's a peaceful warmth in this story - a story that makes a child want to curl up in your lap and hear it "again".I highly recommended it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owl Moon
A treasure for every child's library.A "warm hug" of a book sure to be read aloud many, many times and cherished as your child grows.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. The illustrations and the story complement each other perfectly. I got so lost in the pictures and the words that after closing the book I was momentarily confused by the sunny day outside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Dinosaur Lovers.
My son loves these books. He laughs and giggles the whole way through. The fact that she puts all the names of the dinosaurs hidden in the pictures for the parents to see is great. It gives me an answer for the inevitable "what kind is that one, mom?"
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful story, utterly gripping
This book won the National Jewish Book Award, among others. The Devil's Arithmetic is the story of young Hannah, a modern-day Jewish girl from New Rochelle, who opens a door, and finds herself living during the Holocaust.

4-0 out of 5 stars encounter
this book is about when christopher colmbus came to america and first met the natives. It shows that they white explorers wernt really that great, and were not kind to the natives. I think that this book is ok, beacuse it shows the cruelty of the englsih exploers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for childern.
This book was very descriptive. It had a theme, and stuck to it. It is historicallycorrect, but I don't think it's appropriate for younger kids. This book talks about dieases, and losing one's home and family. It's good for those kids in Kindergarden, but even then, that's pushing it. Overall, it's an okay book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Meaning behind Encounter
The book, Encounter, was so astonishing because of it's vivid descriptions. Not only did it express the arrival of Christopher Columbus through another's eyes, but it was through a child that the story was told. No one believed him because he was so young and they believed that the dream that had been sent to him was just a nightmare. He could tell that they were evil and greedy ever since they set foot in his home. The new arrivers had treated his people like indians, believing that their gifts were to great for such lowly people. Their clothes were so colorful compared to the clothes that wore. After being accepted in a new territory they compensated by having people taken away from them to become slaves. But still no one listened to such a small boy. He escaped and that's how he was able to tell his tale to others, but it was too late. All the people he had once knew were taken away from him forever. I really liked this book because it was in the point of view from someone so young and innocent. ... Read more

An excellent book. My son loves it. He has the other 3-4 books that has been written by Jane Yolen and falls within the same dinosaur theme.

I love this book. It is a book that my 2 year old is interested in while I am slipping some numbers education in. Besides the fact that it has dinosaurs...

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun for Your Little Dinosaur
HOW DO DINOSAURS COUNT TO TEN not only provides a way for very young children to learn to count. It also feeds into the way a kid thinks. The various dinosaurs who do the counting have human mons who cheer them on to learn.Kids will identify with the concept.A child can be a dinosaur today, and his Mom can be a person. Also Mom stays in the background making the dinosaur/child the center of attention, providing a supportive 'I can do it myself' climate. While cartoonish and playful, the pictures represent dinosaurs accurately enough to recognize them. T. Rex helps with the counting, as does Ptaradactyl, and a few others I can't spell or pronounce. But as I've learned from my 5 year-old-neighbor, the kids should be have no trouble informing the adults in their lives which dion is who.As the dinosaurs count, they play with the toys they are counting, which adds to the fun.The books themselves are sturdy and will withstand rough handling by really little tykes. They're also a convenient size for toddlers to hold.Anybody who has a junior dinosaur fan around the house should look at HOW DO DIONSAURS COUNT TO TEN. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Table Manners & Great Dinosaurs
My boys and I love Yolen's How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? so of course, we had to get this book.I have a four year old and an 18 month old. They both love the funny pictures and the subject matter.I like that I get to talk to my older son about table manners when we read this book.I did have to do some research to learn how to pronounce some of the names of the dinosaurs (ie. quetzalcoatlus) but that's OK-- my four year old now thinks I'm a dino expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for young dino lovers
This series is great! I have a 2-year-old nephew who loves dinosaurs right now. This was an entertaining book for the both of us.

1-0 out of 5 stars Encourages Unhealthy Eating Habits
With a childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, the last thing we need is a book that teaches kids to clean up their plates.Though this series of books is generally fantastic, I am terribly disappointed with the eating habits this particular book seeks to instill. Many prominent table problems among toddlers and young children are ignored.Healthy eating and eating until one is full should also be covered, but the author is completely oblivious to modern medical opinions on nutrition and diet.I am dumping this book ASAP.

My nephew loves these books, I got him this book first around age 2 and luckily just in time, he wouldn't take his medicine and his Mom referenced "taking it like the dinosaurs" and he was all over it. He's got the whole set now and knows more dinosaurs names than I ever knew existed and corrects me if I pronounce them wrong. Smart kid, great author, and illustrator. 5-0 out of 5 stars Into the Pit
Jane Yolen gave the old dragon legends a facelift in the Pit Dragon Trilogy, a trio of sci-fantasy novels set on a faraway prison planet. There's nothing fantastical or pretty about the world she creates here -- it's gritty, dusty, raw and very dangerous.

This is an excellent book especially for Kindergarten or lst graders. It is great to use for predicting and keep a young readers attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool for teachers.
The book I chose was Seven Blind Mice by Ed Young, which won a Caldecott award for its illustrations. This is a book that could really be used to teach many different things children. From the color wheel in art to working together as a team to get to your goal, it has it all. The story tells about seven blind mice that discover something different in their pond where they live. They decide to go out one at a time on different days to try to figure out what the something is. On each day the mice that went sees something different from the previous mice that went. They all seem to think it is something different. In the end they work together to figure out what the something is which turns out to be elephant. The moral of the story is if you work together as a team you can accomplish any task but alone you can not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kids learn that wisdom comes from seeing the whole
The Indian story of the blind men and the elephant has to be one of the most popular and familiar tales from the sub-continent, and the well-known story receives some nice twists in this book written and illustrated by Ed Young. This time around it is "Seven Blind Mice" who are one day surprised to find a strange something by their pond. They all cry "What is it?" and then run home. Each day, one by one, they investigate the mystery and each returns to report something different to the others, insisting it is a pillar, a snake, a cliff, and so on.Read more

Moonshadow starts out as a shy little boy who lives in China who was curious about The Land of the Golden Mountain (America). Men from China would go to America in search for a better life. This is what Moonshadow's father did. One day Moonshadow was told that he had to choose between either staying in China and never knowing his father or being taken to his father in The Land of the Golden Mountain, he chose to leave. On the boat he was very frightened because he heard the older men telling stories of how they were almost tortured in America which did not make it any easier for Moonshadow to leave China. When he arrives he encounters a couple of "scary" things before they get to where he will be staying. Everyone with the last name of Lee works in a Laundry Shop, which is owned by Uncle Bright Star and White Deer. Moonshadow is greeted with Demon (white people) clothing. He already doesn't like what he sees. Moon shadow faces many difficulties such as being mugged, robbed, being picked on and racism through out the whole story. Towards the end of the story Moonshadow's father Windrider discovers that he wants to peruse his dream and he will need Moonshadow's help to achieve that dream. When he tells everyone that he will be moving out they are hurt and angry. They live by a white demoness and her niece, Miss. Whitlaw and Robin. While they are living there Windrider works as a handy man for Mr. Alger. Everything is perfect until the Earthquake comes. Miss. Whitlaw and Robin, Moonshadow and Windrider have to separate. It is up to Moonshadow to take over there new house because father is working on his dream but, will he finish in time and will it work? You find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most wonderful book I've ever read
I highly recommend this book to anyone...adult or child. I thought this book was a touching story of family and hopes and dreams. I, too, thought it was boring at the beggining, but I got more into it at about chapter 2. I hope more people read this book. Laurence Yep has written a very good book. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars ZZZ,oh, what are we talking about?
Dragonwings is an okay, so-so story about a boy (Moonshadow) and his dad (windrider) who want to build the newfangled invention an aeroplane. The story is confusing, and when they don't understand an english word, it's spelled out in a way where you have to pronounce it to find out what it means. Moonshadow is an innagrant from China and faces problems dealing with his race. It's the book I had to read for my social studies homework and I say, "Get it from the library," ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
The "Mary Celeste" was a trading vessel found adrift in the 19th century. The crew was missing and there was no apparent reason found or note made in the log to explain what had occurred. To this day there is still no answer to this mystery. 5-0 out of 5 stars Questions and theories to explore
What a fascinating and thought provoking story! The Mary Celeste was found abandoned over 100 years ago leaving a multitude of still unanswered questions. The story engages students and leads them to propose theories oftheir own. Hopefully Jane Yolen and her daughter will write many more"unsolved mysteries from history"!

As a decendant of Captian Briggs' family, I am very familiar with the details surrounding this mysterious event!Jane Yolen does a wonderful job of organizing and distilling all the information that is available and making it accessable to children (my own children thank the author, thisstory makes more sense to them now!).In addition,I am going to buy itfor several adult members of our family.A wonderful job, terrific format, very readable...Thank you! ... Editorial Review

Three little girls spare no mercy to Lon Po Po, the granny wolf, in this version of Little Red Riding Hood where they tempt her up a tree and over a limb, to her death. The girls' frightened eyes are juxtaposed against Lon Po Po's menacing squint and whirling blue costume in one of the books numerous three-picture sequences, which resemble the decorative panels of Chinese tradition. Through mixing abstract and realistic images with complex use of color and shadow, artist and translator Young has transformed a simple fairy tail into a remarkable work of art and earned the 1990 Caldecott Medal in doing so. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars terrified mother
The story goes beyond bad. This is a story of three little girls that torture and kill the wolf in a premeditated way. My 4 year-old son was very sad after someone read the story to him in a school interview to preschool. He said to me that it was a bad story, and the girls have done "bad choices". I can't believe this is in the list of books recommended for 4 and 5's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever girls defeat the wolf
This is a rare childrens book about how three little girls defeat the wolf. It's not about how beautiful they are or are not but on the choices they make. It's a story I love to read to my 18 month old baby. She often asks her father and I to read it to her. Plus, the art work is stunning.

Not only is this collection marvelously diverse, but it's also incredibly easy to read.Though the tales still retain the feel of original storytelling, they do not have the awkward idiosyncracies you find in othertexts with obscure (to the US) tales which have been litreally translatedor transcribed. If you're tired of seeing the same tales in every book youfind, get this one. It's a wonderful resource and just plain fun to own. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Stories of clever boys
This is an excellent collection of folktales featuring heroes who overcome adversity using their wits rather than brute force. My six-year-old son absolutely loves this book, his favourite story is The Devil with Three Golden Hairs, but he loves them all.I enjoy reading most of the stories to him myself, though I admit I found a couple of them a little dull, but most of them are wonderful. The stories come from many different cultures, but all feature clever, likeable heroes .This book should appeal to any boy with imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Folktales for Boys & Others!
This is a great collection of folktales specifically selected for the author's sons and grandson. The stories are interesting and exciting - they'll hold the attention of the most reluctant reader. Disguised under the fun tales are great lessons of character and integrity that boys today need so desperately to hear. I highly recommend it to parents, teachers, and kids! ... Read more
