5-0 out of 5 stars A young lad on a fearless journey in search of his mother
Maurice Sendak's "Mommy?" is an interesting pop-up book which deals with a young lad dressed in blue and red attire who encounters some strange creatures in search of his mother. Among the creatures that this lad encounters as he enters a haunted house, we have a wolf-man, a Frankenstein's monster, a Bride of Frankenstein, a mummy, and a goblin. Each of these individuals are addressed the following question, "Mommy?" Some of the monsters try to scare and impale the lad, but not only is the lad not scared, he pulls some rather amusing jokes, mostly consisting of the disfiguring of their protective coverings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I've been a Sendak junkie since I was a kid. His books have always been among my vary favorites, and I'm happy to say they're among my kids' favorites as well. I also love pop-ups, so I was really escited to learn about this book. And I must say, my expectations have been surpassed.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Amazingly intricate Pop-up Book.
My kids and I love pop-up books, and I love paper engineering and building castles and palaces out of paper. When I read this book, I was amazed at how intricate the pop-ups were.Whereas most pop-up books may have 5 or so different pieces of paper on each page, this book has what looks to be 3 to 5 times that number of different small pieces of paper that all interconnect and make an amazing picture.I can't believe they were able to produce this book for the retail price!Surely it can't be by machine?Anyways, your kids will love it, although younger ones will need help closing the pages so that the pieces don't get mangled.I might buy 2 - one for the kids to read and probably destroy, and 1 for my collection.Highly recommended if you love pop-up books! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Returning to Neverland
    For this return to Neverland
5-0 out of 5 stars Fits the original like a hand in a glove.
Geraldine McCaughrean's "Peter Pan in Scarlet" is different from all other additions to the Peter Pan mythos in that it reads like an extention of the original story instead of a fanfiction. There is a comforting feel to reading this book, like the feeling of coming home.It was definately a treat to read after having read the original novel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fly Peter, Fly!!!!Wonderful!
Geraldine McCaughrean has created a fantastic sequal for all of us who believe in NeverLand! In this wonderful follow-up to Peter Pan, we are taken back to Neverland, where there is great adventure waiting Peter and his crew of familiar and unfamiliar cast. However, Neverland is a bit darker and more dangerous than what Peter first experienced, and the challanges he faces is much more than what he expects! From one adventure to another, readers of all sorts will completely cherish this wonderful book that picks up in rythem and beat from the initial story about the young boy who never wanted to grow up.I can simply say that the world at large has waited for THIS book written by THIS author.Ms. McCaughrean has done an amazing job in creating a sequeal that is as much a continuation as it is a new adventure.Peter Pan in Scarlet is a must read for every person who reads.Take flight and let your imagination soar . . . and fly with Peter Pan! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Very cool book
My son loves dinosaurs but had outgrown alot of the kids books out there. This is a great book for older kids and adults will like it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great eye candy for your inner child, and for your other children if you decide to share
This book produced much glee in my house the day it arrived, gasps of joy and amazement, awe and delight. One of these days I'll let my kids look at it, too. I enjoyed it so much that I promptly bought Sabuda's "Alice in Wonderland," "The Wizard of Oz," and another Encylopedia Prehistorica volume, "Sharks And Other Sea Monsters." They're all sensational.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome gift for kids and adults alike!
This book is just simply amazing. When you open each page you cannot stop but to wonder how on earth do they figure out how to not only design and engineer its illustrations but also how to implement it and still manage to sell it at a reasonable price. The content is very informative and educational. Definitely something that one can re-read with interest for many years. It also works great as a reference book for children and it could very easily be helpful for one of their school projects. Speaking of school, instead of getting a mug as an appreciation book for your kid's school teacher, consider offering this book. It is money well spent. ... Read more

What an amazing, thorough, comphrensive guide to everything Star Wars.NOTHING is left out.You get not only in depth profiles of every major character, but every OTHER character in the universe. It's so detailed that they break down each PART of each weapon, ship, etc.For someone like myself who isn't the biggest Star Wars geek (but wanting to learn more), this is a godsend. There are many, many, hardcore fans out there that can reference almost anything and anyone to do with Star Wars.Well, now you can too, and you don't have to see the films 3245 times to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Elementary School Kids and their Grandpa's
This book is said to be suitable for ages 8 (3rd Grade) and up. It's also extremely suited for grandparents. It combines an interesting story line, Captain Lubber is sailing the world searching for the vicious female pirate Arabella Drummond. The book purports to be his journal or log of the trip and what he learned along the way. It is printed on a heavy parchment paper, and filled with activities requiring that you look at a little book glued onto a page, or tie knots with the strings on another page.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids
While this is graded for ages 3 and older, it's reviewed here so that all ages will see it, as nobody with an interest in pirates will want to miss the captivating, gorgeous PIRATEOLOGY: A PIRATE HUNTER'S COMPANION. Here is the journal of Captain William Lubber, who sailed in search of female pirate Arabella Drummond. Dugald Steer edits an account which is vivid, packed with photos and illustration, and holds pockets of 'letters' throughout, along with a compass embedded in its cover. Maps and drawings are excellent and entire families will appreciate the coverage; not just kids~

I received my copy of Secrets of the Alchemist Dar in the mail two days ago, and let me sum up by saying this: Michael Stadther has done it again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Strong writing + strong characters = strong tale
I thought that this book would be one that would be mediocre when I started it, but good gracious, was I mistaken! It was a wonderful tale down which I could not put. It was so easy to connect with Zac, Ana, Pook, and the rest of the characters and to follow their journeys. Michael Stadther's writing style just flowed and his illustrations of the people and places just filled my mind with the incentive to know more.I rarely read such interesting stories and the one featured here in "Secrets of the Alchemist Dar" is a gem. 5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter and I never got tired of reading this book
When she was young, this was one of my favorite books that I read to my daughter. I never got tired of telling her how great she would be when she got older. She also loved hearing it, the rhythm of the words never failed to keep her attention. I read her the entire collection of Dr. Seuss books in the local public library, and this was without question one of her three favorites. As I watch her go through life, I can't help but believe that some of the optimism for success that she possesses is a residual of hearing the words in this book.

    Editorial Review

"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! I bought this one sight unseen from Amazon, and as much as I love the classic "One Fish, Two Fish," I was a little disappointed. First, the book is small, even for a bath book (about 4x6 inches -- the "8.3 x 4.8" dimensions in the Amazon description are just plain WRONG). Second, the book was shorter than I expected. It consists only of the first 8 pages of the original "One Fish." Of course, the baby doesn't know how abridged the book is, so he enjoys it. And the colors are bright, the printing is sharp, and the overall package is high-quality and holds up to lots of handling. But there's not much there to read to him.

While we are in the very, very early stages of potty training my son still loves this book and his Elmo book about being Big enough for a bed. These are great books for toddlers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book but not waterproof
My daughter loved this book, she liked that it was Ernie a character she knew, the only downside was she took the book everywhere including the bath tub so now the book is dry again but swollen.LOL!!!

Just begining to introduce potty training to my 2yo and she LOVES this book! From reading and looking at the pictures, she has finally made the association between diapers = baby and potty = big girl. This made a big difference in her desire to go to the potty! ... Read more

Very contempory with updated word list and the extra photos, diagrams, etc. etc. etc. make this a fine choice for kids of all ages from 2 to 92.I am especially happy they included the 'hoopoe' in the bird category. We have many here in Thailand where I live.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
My daughters are in the third grade and, we have found this dictionary to be very helpful. It is bright and colorful but, it contains quite a bit of information as well. It helps them not only when they are writing something (to look up the spelling of a word) but also to understand the meaning of words. It gives parts of speech, different tenses, and pronunciation of the word as well. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to buy a dictionary for children. I had bought the Scholastic First Dictionary also but, honestly, we did not use that one much at all. The Children's Dictionary is my pick, for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
My son is in 3rd grade. Every week he has to read a new story & learn a list of words from that story. Yesterday, I received the dictionary. Paging through it, it's very easy follow. Every word that was on his list was in the dictionary & the definations were perfect for him to understand. My son also said that they use the same dictionary in his classroom. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka...BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." (Baby to preschool) Read more

I read this to my preschoolers almost everyday. They call it the Coconut Book. They're learning the alphabet, identifying letters, andbuilding their vocabulary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
I first read this to my son when he was one and a half months old.He smiled and (almost) laughed, he liked it so much.Amazing that a book can do that to a child at that age.He still loves it, and you'll be amazed how quickly you learn to recite it by memory. It comes in handy all the time -- waiting in the doctor's office, riding in the car, anytime he starts to fuss. And it doesn't matter if I don't even have the book around -- I just say it and the words capture his attention.Excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
THank you for the book.It arrived very fast and I can't wait to use it in my class. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

"One night, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight." So begins this gentle story that shows just how far your imagination can take you.Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, young Harold draws himself a landscape full of beauty and excitement. But this is no hare-brained, impulsive flight of fantasy. Cherubic, round-headed Harold conducts his adventure with the utmost prudence, letting his imagination run free, but keeping his wits about him all the while. He takes the necessary purple-crayon precautions: drawing landmarks to ensure he won't get lost; sketching a boat when he finds himself in deep water; and creating a purple pie picnic when he feels the first pangs of hunger.Read more

If you have a small child who is not crazy about books, try this one.I have yet to read it to a kindergarten class who was not enthralled with it. Harold is a delight for young and old.He is lovable and at the same time all-powerful, wielding his purple crayon as he chooses. This is a classic no family should be without.

5-0 out of 5 stars "And the moon went with him."
This is a book of such simplicity, both in its words and its illustrations, that one may dismiss it at first glance. Don't! Harold and the Purple Crayon is a magical book. Its popularity may have waned since its original publication over 50 years ago, but it has such enduring charm. Harold has such a wonderful imagination, and in his hands the purple crayon does incredible things. If you've never read this book, please join Harold on his journey. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harold - fifty years on!
I bought this fiftieth edition for my daughter because it was one of her favourite books when she was young. She is twenty-five now and the old book is falling to pieces and still has her added drawings in it. She was very happy with the new shiny copy, even though the original was smaller in size. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK PROVES LEARNING NEED NOT BE PAINFUL
This is truely a funny book. It, as the title states, a diary of a spider, a young spider. It reveal the world as might be seen through the eyes of a spider. Not only it is actually funny, it is just chucked full of very interesting facts about spiders.A child learns a lot about these little critters that are all around us and learns while enjoying a good read and some very nice art work. This books is also a fun one to read with your child.Unlike so many children's books, this one is fun for the adult too.I like the way the author has given our hero spider a rather quirky outlook on life. There are many lesson to learn from reading this book, all interesting, all of the important.I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice story, awful pictures!
What is the criteria for a Caldecott winner? I see nothing in the illustrations of this book to deserve an award. The story is nice, but I don't get it as far as the illustrations are concerned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say hello to an absolutely wonderful book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
A cute book- beautiful illustrations. People need to chill out with their overly analytical ideas about the Caldecott Medal. Beauty (and art) is in the eye of the beholder. The important thing is that children love it-period. ... Read more
