5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction to Diwali!
I really am pleased how it approaches its subject matter. Most children's books about international holidays are too technical and long to be used as a read aloud. This book can be useful and provide useful information. If a student wants more they can read a more complex book later. It also helps include an ESOL child's holiday in class, even young kids. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Full fathom five thy father lies
I suppose that there must be some people in world for whom the name "David Wiesner" means nothing. I can't fathom what this kind of an existence must be like. I suppose it would be the literary equivalent of not knowing what chocolate was. Or snow. The minute the new Wiesner book comes out I, like hundreds of thousands of others like me, rush out to purchase it for friends, relatives, and passing acquaintances I met once in the grocery store. Little wonder that the man has won two Caldecott Medals AND two Caldecott Honors. Now one of those numbers is about to change since Wiesner has produced his most ambitious creation to date. Wordless (as always) and more intense than his light-hearted "Tuesday" and "Sector 7" ever were, this is a book overflowing in deep-water mysteries and delights.

2-0 out of 5 stars A poison apple
I waited a long time to review "The Quiltmaker's Gift" as this is a book I at once both loved and hated. It has much that I prefer and enjoy about children's books.Thegently humerous and richly detailed illustrations are arranged as patchwork story quilts themselves and allow the reader to dwell and expand on the details of the story page by page.(I have rated it two stars rather than one because of the drawings.).I love classic once-upon-a-time stories, especially those with kings and animals that talk and interact with humans. The well executed narrative combined with the fantastic illustrations swept me up and into the enchantment of this story's seductive make believe and dropped me into a pedantic mish-mash of moralistic antimaterialism and new age fuzzy thinking.Generosity of heart, contentment with self, appreciation and enjoyment of one's own possessions and sensitivity to and consideration of those who have less are noble and valuable subjects for children's stories - themes whoch are not honestly presented in this namby-pamby book of explicit socialist propaganda and ethics.Parent's who don't mind their children emptying their houses of their possessions in order to achieve virtue, happiness and moral superiority will love this book.Parent's who don't question how it is virtuous for the rich king to be reduced to a total, supposedly ennobling povertybut it is not unvirtuous nor morally dangerous for the formerly poor to be elevated to ownership status via redistrubution of weath will love this book. The quiltmaker is an unmistakable Mother Theresa knock-off.The preconverted king frequently looks Lenninish and his postconversion persona reminds me of Pavarotti warmly thanking his appreciative audience.Birds twitter, butterflies and hummingbirds flutter, the sun shiners warmer, colors are truer in this little socialist paradise. I could go on further, but I think you get my point. This is not about valuing your possessions and possessing what you value. This is not about sharing, caring or the pleasure and rewards of giving. It's a poison apple.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quiltmaker's Gift
A charming children's book.Beautifully illustrated and with a moral to the story.I keep buying copies for gifts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Colors and Pictures!
Quiltmaker's Gift is a great book to share with children who find themselves getting greedy during the holiday season. It's vibrant color schemes and clever story will impart on them a lovely morality tale and entertain them without them ever guessing that they were being lectured. I loved the pictures of the quilt pieces scattered through the story. This is a classic! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly detailed book for early elementary children.
I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. It is a helpful resource for me as an adult to understand the process, yet in simple language and with pictures to make it interesting for children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous introduction to "Birds and Bees"
I purchased this book after sitting cross-legged on the floor at a major bookstore with a whole slew of books on the subject.I picked this one for a number of reasons including the fact that it discusses different types of families -- this was a huge issue to me because my daughter was adopted as an "older child".
3-0 out of 5 stars A Book with an AGENDA
Well, it is an okay book, if you tear out pages 31 & 32 (which explain and illustrate homosexual relationships). These two pages are completely inappropriate and unnecessary. Also, be forewarned that on page 42, the writer states that abortion is just a "medical way to end a pregnancy".She makes it sound like a safe, natural and healthy alternative to family planning. It is so obvious that the writer is pushing her liberal "agenda" on our innocent children. What a shame. If you do not share her personal views, stay away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THE WORDS ...................
Oh My Gosh.I LOVE THIS BOOK.MY SON.........LOVES THIS BOOK.I thought it would be a good ice breaker to open communication about sex. Although I have started talking to him about sex, it was still an uncomfortable topic for the both of us.Trying to master the clinical side of things as well as the human /real side of things. Not giving too much at a time but trying to make sure he gets what he needs. It is a stressful balance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Train Your Child To Be An Analytical Thinker (and Innoculate Him Against Math Phobia)....
After her math teacher "Mrs. Fibonacci" says that almost everything could be thought of as a math problem, the narrator enters a bizarre realm where "everything seems to be a problem," and it gets increasingly worse, as she becomes a "math zombie" before the brilliant (and for older folks, profound) conclusion. The math problems start out simple ("It takes me 10 minutes to get dressed...If my bus leaves at 8:00, will I make it on time?"), even English is a math problem ("If mail+box=mailbox... Does lipstick-stick=lip?)"Money, time, measurement, fractions, sequences, estimation, sets, logic and more are covered--there's even a quadratic formula and mention of Zeno! The brilliance of this book is that it anticipates and removes the obstacle of math phobia, specifically fear of word problems, that I saw more often than not back when I was a math teacher.Although the bookcover says "For ages > 6 and < 99,"and that is true because of the layers of relevance, I'd especially recommend it for early third grade, that way by the time the onslaught of word problems begins, word problems will seem more like word "puzzles" and fun.Great critical thinking tool, fun both in its story and visuals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Um...yeah
This book is really stupid and, honestly, if I had children, I would not ever put them down by giving them this book.Anyone who has a brain with a capacity higher than that of one with F.A.S. should be able to figure out the answes within two seconds or less and is a waste of money and time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Real-Life Math Book
This book is great for showing kids how math constantly appears in real life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Hits Another Home Run
Junie B., First Grader: Aloha-ha-ha hits home again with the 26th book of the chapter book series. In this book, Junie B. continues with her bit of awkwardness and sassy ways as she heads to Hawaii with her mom, dad, and friends.Junie B's teacher, Mr. Scary gives Junie B. a camera with an assignment to make an official photo journal while she is in Hawaii.Junie B. wants to make her pictures look exciting so she can bring them back to school for show-and-tell, but finds herself looking stupid. How will her photo journal end up?Can Junie B. have a turn of luck?
5-0 out of 5 stars This book was even better than the rest!!!
This book was fantastic!I liked it because it's really funny. My favorite part was when Junie B. was so excited at the very beginning.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!!!!
This is the best Walter book yet!I had a hard time reading it aloud the first time because I was laughing so hard that I was crying! My sons, 10 and 6, were rolling on the floor giggling. That's my kind of storytime.....

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this a Scratch and Sniff Book?
What a crass topic - I didn't think it was possbile to write and publish such a stupid book. How many IQ points do you lose if read the book? Read the others in the series? Actually waste your money on something like this?

1-0 out of 5 stars One Star for Intriguing Art
I like the imaginative artwork. That said, why does everything under the sun have to be discussed/applauded? I agree with the previous review in that the world was a better place when there were concepts such as discretion, privacy, decorum, taste other than poor, etc. The world has LOST something. I'm no prude, and I enjoy an off color joke once in awhile, but this is too much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for adults, too!
We received this CD for a gift a year ago and my kids(4 1/2 and 13mo) and I still BOTH enjoy hearing it!Fun, catchy tunes, with a bit of humor for adults, and silliness for kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wholesome family entertainment we can ALL sing along to!
Despite some unevenness , this album and its accompanying book are a drive-time hit in our household - amazing considering my kids are 10 and 11 - oh, and a baby, who probably doesn't get all the subtleties, but enjoys the music nonetheless.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the seriously silly

4-0 out of 5 stars Ignore all other reviews!
I beleive that the other reviews were written by furious begginer artists whom had tried a few times and were uspset with their results. It takes time to learn how to draw and drawing simple shapes such s circles is not as easy as it is made out to be! I don't think this book could be made any simpler and is perfect for the begginer.

5-0 out of 5 stars AIR GUITAR HEAVEN FOR MY 5, 6 & 8 YEAR OLDS. THEY LOVE THIS CD/BOOK - ROCK ON!
I almost can't believe that some reviewers are so critical. My kids don't know the writer/illustrator from a hole in the wall -- but I have to re-play the Bacon Brother's "Pots and Pans" and that other hot rockin' tune that has something to do with broccoli(eieieieie!) over and over.My three kids have formed their own backseat air guitar/drums/whatever band, they've memorized the lyrics, they're getting along and, when I gaze back at them, they're NOT brain frozen, dull eyed focussed on a little screen tv watching a video.Movin' and Groovin', baby.I love it, so do they. ROCK ON, DOG TRAIN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice, Boomers.Rock 'n' Roll is hear!
Tired of listening to your G'childs "Wee-sings" & Raffi? Do we really have to listen to these again...& again & again
5-0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!
This book delivered exactly what I expected from a sequel to Philadelphia Chickens and Rhinoceros Tap (as well as Pigorian Chants). The kids just love it and the songs and music are good to listen to for adults as well. While they can be silly, they are contemporary and inspire, rather than grind on your nerves like some other kids song books. Definitely worth a look and listen many times over. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Give a Dog a Home!
What a lovely way to teach children `tis better to give than receive.' With few words and no rhymes - except for the author/illustrator's name, of course, and delightful black/white/aqua pictures of Claude the Basset and his homeless friend Bummer, all ages can delight in the spirit of kindness and compassion at Christmastime. But am I the only one bummed because Bummer didn't get a home for Christmas?
4-0 out of 5 stars great
this was book really good. i liked that claude was really nice to bummer. he have him all of those gifts. what a nice dog. the author did a good job saying that it is better give than get. he used a good example also by useing dogs. overall this is one of the best children books there are. so if you want to read a good book read this one.

This is a wonderful story for any child who has ever felt left out.Leo is tiny and can't make his light shine. He is teased by the other lightning bugs. His mom tells him to keep trying and he'll succeed. After practicing over and over, he finally figures out how to light his light. The other bugs stop teasing him and he learns to laugh at himself, an important lesson for the younger child.I have a 6 year old and an 8 1/2 year old and they both love this story. The illustrations are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars My two nephews love this book & CD!
This lovely and lively story became an instant favorite of my two young nephews -- which is saying a lot considering that their bookshelf is well stocked! The CD that accompanies the book (making the price a real bargain) is no afterthought -- it is just as rich in detail and as well-produced as the book itself. And having a CD of the book comes in very handy when the boys are in the mood to hear the story AGAIN (and again and again and again...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh, those pictures
I bought this for my five year old, and wish I bought it when she was a little younger. Despite the simple story line, she still likes to look at it, and I hope it's a book that will help her on the way to reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uh Huh Uh Huh Uh Huh (He's a yes man!)
We picked this book up with a CD of the author reading the story through school last year.My son loves it still 6 months later & I find it pretty amusing myself. We have had side discussions about time out, not drawing on the walls, how watching tv is a privilege, using your imagination, and how sassing your parents ("You're not the boss of me!") will get a child in trouble for sure.My son even took it to preschool last year to share with his class.Since it is about cats, I think young girls would be entertained as well.As a parent, I recommend this book particularly if you can get it with the read-along DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skippyjon Jone in the Dog House
It is as great as the first book my family loved the story. Again it is a book to have at home for children of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse
My 6 year old daughter loves Skippy and we were both excited when we saw this, the second Skippyjon Jones book! The first book was fabulous! All of our family (dad, three daughters ranging in ages from 6-16, and myself) adored Skippy. The rhymes are fun to do and the book has a lot of energy, just like the first.Of course this book is similar to the first--it is a children's book and we bought it specifically because we liked the format of the first book.We are already anticipating the third book and will happily buy it when it comes out.Skippy is an extremely imaginative, high-energy, creative boy kitty who, like all little kids at one time or another, does naughty things. That doesn't make this a bad book, if anything, it should be a way to have a conversation with your young child about appropriate behavior. In the end, this was a fun, fast-paced fictional children's book that all three of my children laughed at and listened to when I read it--and that's saying something considering the older two are 11 and 16!!!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The hobbit
I didnt really enjoy this book because it was hard for me to understand. I understood the characters and i could picture what they looked liked because it has good discription, but other than that the rest of the book didn't grab my intrest. The biggest reason I didn't like this book was probably because it wasn't real, like how the hobbits lived under ground. After reading this book I relized that i'm just not into fantasy stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of these books
The story of a simple man on a long journey, I enjoyed every page and have read it again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars There and Back Again
I know that over a thousand people have reviewed this wonderful book but I felt so strongly about The Hobbit that I just had to say sonething about it. The Hobbit was and still is a masterpiece, and will remain a masterpiece for centuries to come. One of the main reasons why is that its prose and style of writing is absolutely captivating. It has a simple and delightful charm to it that makes you want to keep on reading. Its plot is also a treat. It is not boring or stale, as I've heard others say, but lively. Also, with this book, there are many coicidences and connections among characters (so what if Bilbo didn't kill Smaug? Think about it. Could a little hobbit really kill a dragon twenty times his size, despite his cunning and discreetness? I don't think so). Best of all, though, it has a sweet message and theme that can actually leave you pondering about it for hours. I have read the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I have to admit that, in my opinion, The Hobbit is better, despite the Trilogy's genius. What can I say? It's an excellent read, and definetly worth your time. The only thing you'll regret is that it will go by too fast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fun for kids and great for a keepsake!
My husband had this book as a child in the late 70's, and my sister found the same book in the store and bought it for my oldest son about 5 years ago.It has been so fun for my son to fill out the book.We still have Daddy's book to look at from when he was little, so that is fun!I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting their child to have an enjoyable and interactive activity. It also serves as a wonderful keepsake for later on.They have fun things in it, such as "How many steps is it to the mailbox?" and "How many windows are in your house", as well as questions about what you want to do when you grow up and your interests.Love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun packed into a happy yellow book!
I had wonderful memories of this book as a child and wanted to bestow the same on my three year old. We've have great fun counting spoons, talking about our favorite animals, and getting quirky autographs (i.e., a man over 6'3"). A classic. Great family time too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for small children
I wish I had had this book when my son was little. It is a great book for small children to learn from and to tell about themselves at the same time.I plan to use portions of it to base a scrapbook on to give to the small children in my family so they can create their very own memory book about themselves. ...
