Editorial Review

With its lovely, humorous illustrations and wonderful narrative about a hungry caterpillar growing up to be a beautiful butterfly, Eric Carle's story touches anyone who still has some growing to do. Along with reassuring repetition--"He was still hungry ..."--the book includes some wonderful interactive moments: what youngster can resist sticking a finger through that hole in the page as his ravenous friend makes his way through various delicacies? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY WELL DONE BOOK - QUITE INFORMATIVE
I normally do not care all that much for "pop-up" type books, as they tend to sort of come apart at the seams with constant use. This one is differnt though. It is well made and is able to stand a lot of use and abuse. The story is great, tellin the life cycle of a butterfly. The illustrations are quite colorful and very easy to follow and understand. The text goes perfectly with the pictures and it is amazing how how the little one cannot keep thier fingers out of the many holes the caterpillar chews through on his way to becoming a butterfly. This explains the life cycle of the butterfly.I found, with my grandchildren, that after reading the book (time and time again) that when we captured a live caterpillar, gave it plenty to eat, and let it go through the entire process as shown in the book, they, the grandchildern were absolutely fascinated.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!!
This book is one of my childrens' favorites. From the time they were both too little to know their days of the week they still chimed in when the caterpillar ate and ate and was "Still Hungry" until they could say the days of the week with no problem, this book will forever be a staple among my families' collections. The illustrations are Eric Carle's usual terrific array of colors and creatures. This book is also great for nursery school teachers to read and explain to their children the beautiful transformation from caterpillar to butterfly by using live caterpillars as an educational tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, colorful book
I love this book because you can start reading it from when your child is a newborn up through the preschool years.Babies will appreciate the pictures, colors and cadence.Preschoolers will love the story and pictures. The board book version is perfect for small hands. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Children's Book
This a great book for children. The illustrations are fabulous and what great way to teach your children to be nice to their pets.I read it to my little girl almost everyday and she loves the character Emma. Though we are not from a "two mom" family, I feel the book is a great way to let your child learn about the many differnet types of families in the world through a great story about a little girl and her cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming book - my daughters really enjoy it.
I bought this book after finding a recommendation for it in a list on amazon.com.5-0 out of 5 stars Conveys a good message about a little girl and her family.
This book is about a little girl and her cat and their daily lives. The fact that she has two moms is handled in a matter of fact nature, saying we too, are a normal family. It is about love, understanding and parenting.Great way to introduce your children to family enviroments that they will experience as they grow up and their circle of friends expand, bringing them into other people's homes.Parents can learn from this book too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars oh the thinks you can think
I love it because you get to finish fast and their like riming words.I love riming words they always make me interested in the book.they say right and then they change the wordto light. Those are changing words.I love when they put the words they are supossed to put and then they change them.It was a different Dr.Suess book it was "The Thinks You Can Think" it was really incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book to get your little one to think!
What a cute book! This book greatly inspires little ones to use their imaginations and think up all sorts of things. This book also reminds me of a story in Seuss' book, "I can Lick 30 Tigers Today," in which the Cat-in-the-Hat's daughter uses her imagination to think up a Glunk. That's a pretty funny story too.Anyway, in this tale, there really isn't a storyline at all.Just page after page of silly drawings of things that don't exist mostly (like how much water can 55 purple elephants drink?).My little one recognizes Seuss' drawings and always tells me that's 55 Hortons drinking water!Or, how about "schlopp.Schlopp, schlopp, beautiful schlopp.Beautiful schlopp with a cherry on top."And what on earth is a jibboo anyway?A bird's head on a human body, walking down a dark street? This book is filled with very silly things such as this, none of which make sense, but all of which cause little ones to use their imaginations. It's a great time reading this one aloud and ours gets read nightly.
5-0 out of 5 stars But can you think as many thinks as Dr. Seuss thinks?
"Life" magazine published a report in May of 1954 about illiteracy among American school children. One of the key things in this article was that children were not inspired to read because their books were boring, which is to say the world of Dick, Jane and Spot.So it came to pass that Theodore Geisel's publisher sent him and a list of 400 words that had to be cut to 250 (because that was how many words it was believed a first grader could understand before their heads exploded or something), and then write a book.At this point in the history of the world Geisel was best known as the creator of Gerald McBoing-Boing, an animated character for which he won an Oscar. The book, of course, was "The Cat in the Hat," which used 220 of those words, and for the rest of his life Dr. Seuss wrote books that were part of the Beginner Books and Bright and Early Books series, which proudly allowed young kids to proclaim "I Can Read It All By Myself."Consequently, Dr. Seuss was one of the major forces in American literacy in the last half of the 20th century.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensational Shapes Story with Marvelous Message
This book is a delight on many fronts. It is a great, fun story about shapes which provides an entertaining way to expand a child's knowledge of informal geometry. Not only are children introduced to the proper names of polygons, but also this book helps them to see shapes as they exist in their surroundings. Also this fun book has a great message - it's good to be you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun with religious allegory
I seriously think everyone should read this book, simply to be amused by looking for sinister religious messages in its plot, which consists of a protagonist triangle (notably NOT a square, pentagon, or circle) who wishes to experience life from the point of view of a shape with more sides, so he visits a "Shape-Shifter" (i.e. Satan/Eve) who transforms the triangle into a series of polygons with increasing numbers of sides.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Geometry
An excellent fun book and a learning tool at the same time. You can use it as a class resource or as a fun break for those who know the content.Teachers at my school loved it.Students were engrossed in it.Can be used as a literacy tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
A classic story, but one that needs some explaining. After all, bullfights aren't really PC these days.If you try not to get too deep, it's still a nice story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Classic Story
I picked this book up at the bookstore about three years ago for my oldest son who at the time was 4 yrs old. He loved this book then and still does now. Also his younger brother who is 3 enjoys this story. I read this to them a few times a week and don't get tired of the story myself either. They think some of the pictures are hilarious.Would highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Story about a Bull named Ferdinand
This is about Ferdinand who was a bull but didn't act very much like a mean, rough bull. The illustrations are in black and white, but they are quite funny (especially the men in the three funny hats). This is a classic story that I read growing up in the early sixties. It is still a good story despite it's age.Parents should read the classics in children's literature to their children.A must read ages 4-8. ... I loved this book as a child, my sister and I would go around saying the tongue twister name over and over!We would try and out do each other by who could say it the fastest. Now she is adopting a beautiful daughter from China and I thought this is the perfect book for my new neice. She will be able to enjoy this fun story of two brothers who not only play well together but help each other when one is in trouble, like falling into a well.It teaches children that even if they are not the first born they are just as special.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tikki Tikki Tembo
Love this book. Read it as a child, and now read it to my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite read-aloud book during elementary school.
When I was in kindergarten, our teacher played the cassette for our class as she turned the pages of the book...letting us hear the story as it unfolded. It has left a lasting impression, which Iwill pass to my kids. I have wanted to get a copy of it because I loved the tongue twister name and I'm happy to see Amazon carries it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Education of Little Tree By: Forrest Carter
This book is about a boy orphaned very young who is adopted by his Cherokee Grandmother and half Cherokee Grandfather in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennesse during the Great Depression. He Grandparents named him Little Tree. He is taught how to hunt and survive the mountains the Cherokee way, taking only what is needed by his Grandfather. He is taught the joys of reading and education by his Grandmother. He also learns the way of white businessmen and tax collectors and how Grandfather scared the away. Little Tree is sent off to an indian boarding school run by whites. We learn of the cruelty of indian children. Little Tree learns how the world differs from the Cherokee way.
1-0 out of 5 stars The WORST book I ever recorded...
When I was first chosen to narrate this book, I knew nothing of the racist past of it's author -- I knew only that it was the single worst book I'd ever been assigned. The negative AudioFile Magazine review of my recording (quoted here on Amazon) is completely fair.Reading the book to myself in order to prepare to record it, I found it annoying in the extreme -- the so-called prose is precious and poorly written, and the allegedly authentic colloquialisms are grating. When it came time to say it all aloud, for the first time ever (and I've narrated upwards of 200 audiobooks) I found it impossible to invest this piece literary flotsam with any emotional content whatsoever. As declining the job was no longer an option, I merely tried to stay out of the way and give it as simple and logical a performance as I could, but I was unable to compensate for the God awful writing, and unable to disguise my contempt for the entire enterprise. It remains the worst recording I have ever done, and I was, for a time, quite ashamed of it.Now that I discover more about it's hate mongering author, I'm actually pleased that the recording stinks.I now believe I gave this garbage exactly the reading it deserved.(I must add that I learned a valuable lesson: never record a book you loathe.I was subsequently offered the execrable "Left Behind" series for young adults, but having suffered through "Little Tree," knew better than to lend my voice to the spewing of "Christian" hate.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book was assigned school reading.I found it rather boring and the language used in the story became annoying after a while. Not recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am in just as much suspense as my 7 year old to get to the next chapter!!
I bought this box set because of readers reviews & I could not be more happy. My son follows me around the house and has asked me at 7am to read more Captain Underpants, how can I say no... he loves it and we love it too.The author does a great job presenting the stories in a way kids and parents will love.I am waiting to see an ACME product in the book to along with the PATSY 2000, 3-D imaging machine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Captain Underpants 1-5
Funny ,Yet Bawdy reading. My seven year old brought one of these home from the school library one day. Although initially shocked by the bathroom humour in the book I realized my son was reading as fast as he could. This is the adult equivalent of a "couldn't put it down" novel. I purchased the 5 book series and tried rationing the books over a week or so. Let me tell you , he wanted the next book as soon as he finished the previous one.It is important to note that this should not be the only type of reading your child should do, I look at these books a kind of a fun playful reward, like a movie or music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kids love poopy talk
My daughter discovered the Captain Underpants series a couple of months ago and I have to say, at first I wasn't sure I wanted to encourage her reading nonsense material. When I read the titles of the books, I had such a laugh and it really hit me why some kids love these books--they are sooo funny and it's exactly the kind of thing that a attracts a child.Kids love potty talk and silly pictures and the seeing Harold and his friend get into constant trouble with the principle at their school. These jokesters are forever playing pranks and trying to get themselves out of trouble.Yes, it's complete nonsense, but, it got my daugther to read chapter books!she's hooked. She loves to read and it's her love for reading that I'm encouraging not the nonsense. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL, "STUPID TALES"
THERE WAS NO DOUBT I WASN'T WARNED BEFORE PURCHASING THIS, WHAT I WAS GETTING.IT'S SARCASTIC, PARTS ARE FUNNY, BUT I COULDN'T BRING MYSELF TO WASTE ANY MORE OF MY TIME BY FINISHING THE BOOK. HOWEVER, HIS BOOK ABOUT THE WOLF & 3 PIGS WAS MUCH MORE CLEVER AND ENTERTAINING.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tails
A fantastic book not only for the young, but all ages. However, if you do not have the background knowledge in the many original fairy tales, you may fail to see the humour throughout the book. I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stinky Cheese... funny? YES!
The story is narrated by Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk. It is separated into a few short funny stories based on well known fairy tales.Jack talks to characters in the stories as well as the reader throughout the book in a very comical way that keeps the readers involved and entertained. All of the short stories are very funny and separate from each other; however, the characters sometimes travel from one story to another as a sort of underlying plot.

Editorial Review

More than 60 years have not dated this wonderfully absurd tale--itstill makes kids (and parents) laugh out loud. Poor Mr. Popper isn't exactly unhappy; he just wishes he had seen something of the world before meeting Mrs. Popper and settling down. Most of all, he wishes he had seen the Poles, and spends his spare time between house-painting jobs reading all about polar explorations. Admiral Drake, in response to Mr. Popper's fan letter, sends him a penguin; life at 432 Proudfoot Avenue is never the same again. From one penguin living in the icebox, the Popper family grows to include 12 penguins, all of whom must be fed. Thus is born "Popper's Performing Penguins, First Time on Any Stage, Direct from the South Pole." Their adventures while on tour are hilarious, with numerous slapstick moments as the penguins disrupt other acts and invade hotels. Classic chapter-a-night fun. (Ages 5 to 10) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Popper's Is Easy reading
Mr. Popper's Penguins is an easy read for a twelve-year old boy, and I found it enjoyable. It wasn't necessarily suspenseful, but each chapter ended with a problem that needed to be solved. This book would be great to use for a book report. The characters in the story are well developed and can be compared and contrasted. It would also be a great read-aloud for little children because of the silliness in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic
I loved this book when my second grade teacher read it to us over 43 years ago.My second graders love it today. There are so many extras to learn with the actual story - what life was like before television, when people traveled by train, when people went to see newsreels, when people saw trained animal acts at the theater...And they love all the funny things that happen to poor Mr. Popper and his family. They learned about Antarctica and the explorers like Admiral Drake and Captain Cook. They wrote about how they thought the story would end. Then they wrote letters back home but I don't want to give any more away. You'll fall for these lovable penguins and their family too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr.Popper's Penguins
Mr.Popper's Penguins is the best book. and because it is old and a lot of people still read it is very amazing. I think that everyone should read it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Goodnight Moon in Spanish
As an NY born of Dominican decent, I love reading this book to my little one.My 20 month old daughter loves this book. We have both the English and Spanish versions of the book.Often times she brings her Dad or me both books to read to her.We start with one gets tired of it mid-way and then she wants us to pick up where we left off in the other language. It doesn't really matter to her which language we start/end with.We change it up all the time.I agree with some other reviewers that the translation is not exact, but the flow is very good with the changes that were made.I especially like "la viejecita que teje muy calladita" instead of "a quiet old lady who was whispering 'hush'," especially since I knit and my daughter can relate to that.Because of this book she has begun to comfortably alternate luna/moon and star/estrella.I think it's really important for my little girl to learn both Spanish and, obviously, English and this book makes it that much easier to accomplish.

These are wonderful stories for young children. They are very entertaining, suspenseful but not scary, and informative. My daughter is always saying, "Daddy, guess what?Did you know..."My only complaint is that some of the stories are often split over two cds.

I liked this book so much that I read it in less than one day!Very exciting.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Children's Bible
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children's Stories
We wanted to give a gift to each new baby from our women's group at church. We thought this would be good because it will provide a way for mom to read to the child as it grows.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but Lacking
It is a good Bible for children who are learning to read, but not suitable for reading and teaching accurate bible history or lessons to young school age children. The stories are simplistic, and, as one reviewer suggested, kind of "leave you hanging". The illustrations are also simple, and very "cartoonish". Also, many good Bible stories are missing altogether.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book for kids that parents will love too
This is one of the best pre-k early reader books ever! What makes this a great book is it has humor that mom and dad can appreciate too, which is great since they'll be reading it over and over again! The art and vocabulary are simple but very effective in communicating the emotions of our hero the pigeon. This is a must have in every child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST PreK-Grade2 book series EVER!!!
It was love at first sight. After finding Mo Willems' "Don't Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus," my son was hooked. He couldn't wait to read it by himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Queen of the Scene Book and CD
I really did enjoy the book a lot. This was a book was a page turner for me to read. I have always support any thing that Queen Latifah does. She has a postive attitude. She always show young women and girls that they can do any thing if they set there mind to it. I have nothing but love for Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah keep up the good work that you are doing to help young women and girls know that nothing is impossible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why do celebrities write children's books?
Honest to god, this is one of the worst celebrity-written kids' books I've seen (possibly second only to Billy Crystal's saccharine tripe).Being a songwriter, you'd think Queen Latifah would actually know how to write verse... but she can't.Her rhymes have no real meter or structure, and half the time they don't even make sense (and not in a good Dr. Seuss way). The illustrations aren't that bad, but good lord, it's a shame that famous people can get crap like this published based solely on their fame. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars These books are great....especially for younger kids
My 6 year old daughter and I have started reading the first box set (I read them to her older sister at this age). They are very funny and even when I read a passage that is not "correct English" my daughter will laugh because she knows that's not the way you talk. That's what makes it so funny. We just finished Sneaky-Peaky Spying which is one of my favorites. How horrible is it to a little kid when she thinks she sees her Teacher stealing grapes at the grocery store???I highly recommend this collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones is the koolestess 6 year-old on the hole planit!!!!
Yes, I know there are typos in the title. Yes, I intended them. If you can't get over them, you aren't quite as mature as is Junie B. Jones. My daughter is 6 and in first grade. We discovered the Junie B. Jones series when one was sent home in her reading folder for homework. Thank you to her teacher for sending that book. We have since read every title we can find in the series. While I'm reading to our daughter, my wife is laughing from the other room as she tries to listen to Junie B.'s wonderful antics. While she is learning to spell (just like my daughter) she is wise beyond her ears (as Junie would say). Reviewers of these books who can't get over Junie's use of grammar are missing the point. The stories have wonderful themes and Junie always learns the right lesson by the last chapter, despite her best efforts. Each and every title fits the world of a first grader to a T. My daughter is getting 5 more titles for Christmas this year. Please don't tell her. I want it to be a surprise! If I can let you in on a secret, I'm looking forward to her getting them, too...and my mother was such a strict grammarian that she wouldn't even let me use an adverb incorrect. JOKE!!!!!!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones-ness
We enjoy the Junie B Jones series, and this set is no different. The character is a fun character, and everyone in the family gathers around when someone starts to read it aloud, usually my 17 year old daughter to her older sister! The two of them crack up over Junie B together. The younger ones love the stories too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for families who are adopting
My husband and I are adopting a baby boy. I have been trying to find a 'Big Sister' book for our daughter, but so many of them are about mom being pregnant and giving birth to the new sibling. Thisbook is the only one I have seen that is suitable for both situations (adoption or giving birth). The story itself is simple, but very sweet and reassuring for the older child. My daughter absolutely loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite of 2-yr-old big sister
Our daughter was given this book a few months before her baby sister arrived. She liked it alot pre-sis and still requests it now that li'l sis is here. Upon receiving it, I didn't think much of it (not a "cool", super-aesthetically pleasing cover), but my daughter really liked it.The book always refers to "our baby" so that it works expecting boy or girl.I really appreciated the intro to what baby will be like - my daughter thus was able to enthusiastically spout some facts (slightly altered/added by us) about baby before she arrived - "Baby cry alot.Baby poop alot.Baby sleep in crib."As for the book baby being bottle-fed, I just told our daughter that our baby would nurse (fortunately we had friends that were nursing so she could see what it was versus me explaining it ;). Overall - I'm ordering the book for my sister-in-law who's expecting her second.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too mainstream.
My mother bought this book for my daughter, and I absolutely detested in.My daughter was confused as well, as to why everything was "wrong," especially with the bottlefeeding.I know most women give up quickly on breastfeeding, but couldn't the author even pretend that some women breastfeed? And of course the baby is always in a stroller or bouncy seat, sleeps in a crib, etc.
