Still a Fan
I still love this book.Teaches the balance between progress and tradition.Hard work, good attitude, and ingenuity pay off in the end.Had to explain what furnace was (we live in Miami), but all my kids (8, 6, & 4) enjoyed it.

Still one of my favorite stories
In an age when everything keeps getting replaced by more modern equipment, this story celebrates making use of a good steam shovel. I still have my copy from when I was a kid.

Charming adventure story
The story (and series) centers on a family of four orphaned siblings, 14 year-old Henry, 12 year-old Jessie, 10 year-old Violet and 5 year-old Benny.The four have runaway and are attempting to live on their own in order to avoid being split up or sent to live with their mean grandfather.They locate an abandoned boxcar in the woods and set up housekeeping there.They manage quite well until Violet falls ill causing them to ask the local doctor for all.In the end though all is well.
So simple and so wonderful!
These books are wonderful. My son who loves sci-fi, dragons and lego, thinks these wonderful books are AWESOME! They capture his attention like no others. As I read these to aloud to him, he laughs, asks questions and wishes he could be there. Although the writing is very simple, the ideas behind them are not. When I first started reading this series to him he said to me,"Mom while you are reading I always feel like I am there with the children doing what they are doing." "YEAH!" Great stories about children who are THINKING and I love my son to want to emulate that!

If I were king of the forest...
I used to like these books. Now I think they are stupid. Especially Benny. He is so stupid. And he's really annoying. There has to be at least five billion books in the series. Anyone that has all of the books in the series must really, really, really, really, really love them. Why do they call their grandfather "Grandfather"? Violet's like "Oh Grandfather! You can have all of my internal organs if you want." Then Benny's like "What's green?" Then their Grandfather is always taking them on these pointless trips for no reason whatsoever. You would think that they would either run out of places to go or get tired of going on the trips. I would be suprised if they had a week at home in one year. Why do they call them the Boxcar Children? In some books they probobly don't even have the word boxcar in some of the books. Don't they ever go to school? Acually I wouldn't be suprised if Benny didn't go to school considering he's so stupid and annoying. They are so cheesy. No family gets along that well and never fights. If there was a family like that it would be a miracle. And I'm talking about ones with more than one child. And nobody has that perfect of a life. I bet they never had one problem or something bad happening to them in the hole series. If I never liked these books then I would have given this series one star. ... Read more

Touching
I love this book!It has a simple, beautiful message.It brings tears to my own eyes every time I read it.I use this book to teach my 7th graders to write a critique.The illustrations are excellent and add to the magic feeling the descriptive words in the story captures.I am looking forward to reading this with my daughter in a couple of years.

I thought this book was horrible
I bought this book online and was not able to see it like I would in a book store. Had I seen it I would never have purchased this book and will never read it to my 6 year old son! It went from suggesting eating your dinner quickly to wiping a dirty jar on your close to cutting holes in a jar lid with scissors quietly so your mom won't catch you. One of the illustrations shows a boy holding scissors wide open with his hand on the inside of the open blades. I would never read it to any child and think the message is just horrible. Yes it is fun to catch fireflys but I know this could have been done better without the dangerous suggestions and disregard for listening to adults and being careful!

Repeat Book
I am not a fan of books that repeat themselves, but this one is adorable. The pictures are so good and the rhymes so cute that it does not even phase me to repeat the lines. It is the perfect length for a bedtime story. Looking forward to reading it for years!

Baby-Friendly
Nice, sturdy books. Stories are concise for short attention spans. I can usually get through a whole book before my 4-month old gets antsy. She likes the pictures and turning the pages is easy for her since the books are so little.

Great Intro to George
I read these to my son since he was a baby and he loved them! These definitely interested him in the "real," full-length George books when he got older.

Classics for the very young
These books were purchased for a one year old and are very sturdy and will last for a long time.My grandchild is too busy to sit still for more than a few pages at a time, but these books are small enough for him to hold and point to the pictures and enjoy on his own.We read to him by naming the pictures, but the reading experience can never begin too young. ... Great book for pirate lovers - parents of easily frightened young ones should take caution
I bought this for my 4 year old son who LOVES pirates right now after viewing the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and seeing the "Tall Ships" on the Great Lakes.I was afraid he would be scared by the pirates turning into skeletons, etc. but he was not - in fact he wanted to watch it again and again.So when I saw this book I knew he'd love it, and he does.Every night before bed he takes out all the separate letters and cards, has me read them, then puts them back in their envelopes.He also has me read all the different types of ships over and over again - he can now name some ship types by memory.This book is very well laid out - even I find the information very interesting and learned things I did not know.

A Useful Resource and Just Plain Fun
This is an attractively put together book on the history and details of pirate life. I have been searching for a resource on the subject that presents information on pirates in such a way as to not seem tedious and boring, but instead inspiring and fun (which, as we all know--pirates are fun!). With all the interest sparked on the pillaging bands of men, and sometimes women, with recent films this volume is a must have for anyone with an interest in pirates. Of course, it would obviously appeal to children and is definitely appropriate for that tender age group, but adults can also find much to appreciate.

A Well-Rounded Adventure

Great!
I read this with my [...] sister and she loved it! It's a little too hard for her age because there are some vocabulary she didn't even understand but I helped her and she got along with the book very well. Very funny and humorous.

A way to connect
I read When I was young in the mountains, then took it to my father, who read it.Rylant is slightly older than me, but she grew up near where my dad was born and raised.My father said after reading that he'd pretty much grown up the same way.He left the poverty of Appalachia as a teenager via the poor man's college-- the service.I was born and raised in Utah.Books such as When I was young in the Mountains were a way for me to connect with a way of life I knew very little about, and I am very thankful for Rylant's work, especially since Dad died recently.

West Virginia
Growing up in West Virginia myself, I relate to to this book. Although I'm now 20 and currently attending college, I still love to read it. It is something I plan to read to my children.

Memories of the Mountaina
This book showed us what is best about the mountains and the traditions of those living in those mountains.It has been so easy for our society to stereotype Appalachian mountain people as ignorant, backwards hillbillies that it is refreshing to see a depiction that shows mountain people in a different light.The old ways are disappearing.So are the mountains.The Appalachian mountains are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, containing one of the most diverse hardwood forests on earth.Mountain top coal removal, strip mining, and valley fills are destroying these mountains.Soon, the only way we will be able to show our children the beauty and wonder of these mountains will be through books and memories. Best Anxiety Book EVER!

Almost Didn't Get - Glad I Did
Jamie Lee Curtis' books have been a running present theme for my friend's daughter. So when her 5th birthday came up this book was an obvious choice. As I was looking over reviews, I saw the one from Cynthia L. Souza where she states the boy is giving the finger. I couldn't believe that Jamie would have this in a book. There was no way I was going to buy this if it was true so I went to the bookstore to check it out. Cynthia was way off base. The boy is simply holding his hand up in a "Stop" gesture. There is nothing wrong with this illustration. I gave a sigh of relief that my friend's daughter could continue to collect these books that she loves.

My son loves this book!
The illustrations are great and my son loves this book.It addresses kindergarten, a younger sibling, and being told "no" when a child really wants to hear "yes," all in terms a kid can relate to.He wants to read it every night before bed!

Best pop-up book so far.........
This is one of the best pop-up books around. I also LOVE his other book The Wizard of Oz. My daughter LOVES this book also! She brought it for show and tell and her classmates were oohing and aahing throughout the whole book. This is a must-have for your bookshelf. The pop-ups are very detailed and just amazing! 5 stars is just not enough for this 10+ stars book.

A great gift
This book is an incredible pop up book!I purchased it for myfour year old daughter.There is too much text to actually read the story to her but we all know the story so we make it up and enjoy the pop ups.It is a book that requires supervision for younger children because the pop ups are delicate and amazing.It is a wonderful unique gift to give at birthday parties when everyone else gives toys! A Wonderful Present
This a beautiful collection of poetry for children of all ages. I have given this as a gift to new parents, parents, and grandparents, as well as, to children.

WONDERFUL Anthology that my kids have actually read on their own....
I have about 20 anthologies of poetry for children, and this is clearly the best in my collection.The poems are beautifully crafted and many are fairly complex, yet they are all accessible and interesting to children (mine are finishing up 1st & 2nd grade).Plus the watercolor illustrations are absolutely exquisite.
Excellent poems with mind blowing art
Caroline Kennedy kicks off this anthology by saying that there is "a world of word and feelings that poetry can help us understand" and her comprehensive and creative poem choice sets out to prove this.She collects some really interesting choices, from the "classics" like Robert Frost, Emily Dickenson, the Bible, and ee cummings to many excellent contemporary poems and poets.The book is clearly divided into seven sections: About Me, That's So Silly!, Animals, The Seasons, The Seashore, Adventure, and Bedtime that keep the anthology neatly organized.Each section is punctuated by events, stories, and recollections from Kennedy's own life, but they are kept to a minimum so it never feels like a "celebrity book".At the end is a useful index of the first lines of every poem and the non-English poems in their original form.

tales of a fourth grade nothing
i thought that this book was really funny it made me laugh it was about peterliving in an apartment with his mom and baby brother fudge and this girl that is in his class room lives in the same apartment and he thinks that she is really annoying an she watches fudge when he is on the playground...... you'll see when you read it if you do!!!!!

A Pretty Good Read
This book is highly entertaining. I am a HUGE fan of Judy Blume; she has written some of my favorite books. While this was a good book, I would have to say that I prefer Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great and Superfudge. This was still highly enjoyable and had a few laugh-out-loud funny parts. And who cares if it is a little unrealistic? What's wrong with a silly read every once in awhile? So anyway, I give it 4 stars.

Hi well to start.... THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ever since the first chapter I couldn't stop laughing it's that good. I feel sory for Peter Hatcher who constantly has to deal with the never ending trouble of his little brother Fudge. Fudge can't seem to stop buging Peter. From ruining his homework to eating his turtle Fudge is an accadent waiting to happen! A must have!
I am a senior in college and am going to be an Elementary school teacher. I am currently interning in a Kindergarten class and they love Skippyjon Jones.

Even though my daughter is a little young for this book I picked it up anyway...I love this little character.Like the reviews above the little sing-a-longs and the story itself is just so cute.I plan on buying all the skippyjonjones books and the little guy himself!You won't be dissappointed!

Skippyjon Jones is adorable
I have had Siamese cats all my life, and Skippyjon is certainly a Siamese, even though he thinks he's a Chihuahua.The author has captured the imagination of a Siamese kitten perfectly.As an elementary school media specialist, I can say this book is loved by all children.I'm sorry if the Latin culture is offended by this cute story (funny how Speedy Gonzales wasn't offensive many years ago), but the bravery of Skippito Friskito should be commended as he fights the bandito.Children love the accent and the cat!As for me, it's a book I can't get out of my head. ... An old favorite
This was one of my favorite books as a child.It's great for beginning readers.

New Version is abridged
This is a great book BUT the current edition is badly edited from the original - I was very disappointed to find that the birds and the types of houses and many other pages are not in the new version. Anybody have an original copy they would like to sell?

The Best Word Book Ever!
I got this book as a gift for my son when he was 1 year old.He didn't read it until he was about 18 months. Now he is 3 years old and loves this book.It talks about getting up in the morning, washing face, hands, making the bed, changing clothes, going to eat breakfast, etc. It also talks about the Supermarket, school, at the beach, camping, etc.It is a great book.My son really enjoys it.He remembers Kenny Bear and tries to be like him.I recently bought this book as a gift for a friend. Kid's Review
I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend.It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.
Autism Spectrum lifesaver..
.. and should be listed as such.My daughter loves this book, she is very intent as we read it, which means she is taking it in.She has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is a high-functioning form of autism.These kids have difficulty with social situations, and they are visual learners, so this is awesome.

With caddiness starting at even earlier ages these days, I bought this book to help my 6 year old daughter understand that not everyone demostrates good friendship. She's so sensitive and doesn't understand why others don't respect her feelings. This book reiterates how to be a good friend and how not to be. It praises being kind and caring so it reinforced what she knew to be correct behavior. The illustrations she recognized immediately to be Marc Brown's adorable and colorful characters.
