5-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Story of Love and Hope
This is one of the most inspirational children's books I have ever read. The message is simple but powerful and an inspiration for all. It is part Pinocchio, part Pride of the Yankees, and it works. For anyone who has ever had a child go through any kind of serious illness, it is a wonderful reminder of how sometimes the smallest thing can suddenly reach out to that child and bring them back to you, and how you should never give up fighting. For those who have lost a child, it is a powerful lesson in love, hope and strength. For those whose lives have never been touched by serious childhood illness, it is a chance to reach out and hug your own kids and realize just how special each and every child is and how much they bless your life. It's all about believing, and the message comes through loud and clear. This book should be on every child's bookshelf, in every classroom and in every library. It is a story to read again and again. The illustrations are just perfect for the story, gentle and magical. Since the proceeds of this book go to charity, you are not only sharing the magic of The Boy of Steel with your own children, you are helping other children as well. Young or old, you will be touched by the inspirational story and the simple style of the author. It is a book I now proudly own, and my child, a survivor of serious childhood illness, is now 20. It is a wonderful reminder for me that I am one of the lucky ones -- truly blessed to have my son. He has read it, too. Read The Boy of Steel and share the message of love with others. It truly has touched my life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good for younger children
This is a lovely book that addresses the loss of a loved one in simple terms. It also explains that young people can die of tragic and sudden events and does not merely focus on grandparents (as many others do). I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for kids
Two people on a Grief Care team at our church reviewed this book and believe it is a very good book for children.Information is presented in a way that is easy to understand, but that allows for questions.Good information in the back of the book for parents or loved ones to guide them as they work with their children.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Miss You: A First Look At Death
This is a very good informative book; but I feel the language may be a little difficult for very young children.I think, as it is read to children, one would have to be careful to explain concepts in terms a very young child could better understand.Talk on their level. Overall.A good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a tale about 3 siblings, Jared, Simon and Mallory. The children, along with their mother, move into an old and battered estate, only to find secret creatures milling about everywhere.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very easy
This is a good book sereies. It is very short and easy. You could a volume of it in at the most an hour. Want a book that doesn't take forever to get to the good stuff. Read this. My favorite was the action packed Wrath of Mulgrath. The Iron Wood Tree and The Seing Stone are good too. I wasn't to impressed with The Feild Guide or Lucindas secret. But the Feild Guide was good enough to turn me on to this series and I'm sure it'll be the same for many others to come. If you want better books with a touch of the super natural read Deltora Quest Forests Of Silence. It will turn you on to a whole other series filled with magic and action. Neither Of these are for little kids. Spiderwick would be suitable for age eight and up. Deltora is suitable for ten and up. Either way Spiderwick is great and has turned me into lover of books. It May do the same for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spiderwick Chronicles
My baby brother reads Spiderwick and from his giggles I know he likes it. The Spiderwick Chronicles is one story spread over five books. The books are very short, about 120 pages each with many illustrations, and it took me a little over an hour to read each book.

5-0 out of 5 stars How A Birthday Should Be
I love reading this to my child as much as I loved having it read to me when I was a child. The book is joyous and lets you enjoy the fantasy of just how a birthday should be. Reading it on birthdays is a tradition in our house and helps us to relive the fantasy each year.

Editorial Review

Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Little Story
I purchased this book to read to my baby and it is just a sweet little tale about Mommies and their mischievious babies.I can't wait until she is old enough to sit on my lap and really understand the story when I read it to her.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an Oldie but a Goldie!
My kindergarten teacher had also read this book to me and now I'm reading it to my kids, but really to my son because he's 4 and my daughter is 8. She listens to it when it comes time for me to read it to him because she would find it amusing. Blueberries for Sal preserve a distinct since of life when tin pails and wood smoke, bobby pins and rambling dirt roads were routine. At the same time it is a timeless portrayal of curiosity and maternal instinct as Sal and her mother find themselves sharing their berry patch with a hungry bear cub and its mother. The words flow in a natural rhythm, creating patterns that build anticipation.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for getting kids to read
I bought this for my nephew for his 10th birthday. When he opened it he said "now I can take my name off the list at the library cause I OWN it" For the rest of the party he regaled us all reading from the book. In the hour he owned the book he learned several new words. What a great way to get kids to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift book forlittle boys!
My nephew LOVED it. I expected more pictures and less text but it didn't bother the 8 year old. He got tons of thrills just from the kid picking his nose on the cover. Perfect gift for a wild little boy along with a container of that oozing slime you get at Walmart. (the fits of giggles from the booger jokes are worth everything)

Editorial Review

Elizabeth, a beautiful princess, lives in a castle and wears fancy clothes.Just when she is about to marry Prince Ronald, a dragon smashes her castle, burns her clothes with his fiery breath, and prince-naps her dear Ronald.Undaunted and presumably unclad, she dons a large paper bag and sets off to find the dragon and her cherished prince. Once she's tracked down the rascally reptile, she flatters him into performing all sorts of dragonly stunts that eventually exhaust him, allowing her to rescue Prince Ronald. But what does Prince Not-So-Charming say when he sees her? "You smell like ashes, your hair is all tangled and you are wearing a dirty old paper bag. Come back when you are dressed like a real princess." (At least he has the courtesy not to mention that the princess's crown resembles a dying sea anemone.) In any case, let's just say that Princess Elizabeth and Prince Ronald do not, under any circumstances, live happily ever after. Canadian author Robert Munsch celebrates feisty females everywhere with this popular favorite, and Michael Martchenko's scratchy, comical, pen-and-ink drawings capture the tongue-in-cheek quality of this read-aloud crowd pleaser. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Boy who wants Freckles
Andrew Marcus wants freckles like Nicky Lane because his mother would never notice that his neck was dirty. Sharon said her family had a secret recipe for freckle juice and she would sell it to Andrew for 50 cents.Andrew thinks about the deal and then the next day at school he buys the freckle juice. Sharon throws the recipe onto the ground and when Andrew tries to pick it up, he falls on the ground.Miss Kelly, his teacher called him up to her desk ,takes the recipe and reads it. She says she will give it back to him at 3 o'clock.Andrew gets the recipe amd makes the freckle juice at his house. He smells it and it smells horrible. He drinks a sip and spits it out. Andrew then drinks the whole glass of freckle juice. The next day he doesn't have freckles. Andrew goes to his art bin and opens the drawer and looks for a brown magic marker. He finds a blue magic marker and puts freckles on his face with the magic marker. He goes to school with the freckles on his face. Miss Kelly gives him a freckle remover recipe to help him get the magic marker off his face.
5-0 out of 5 stars LESSON WELL LEARNED AND HUMOR TO BOOT
I enjoy books for the young ones that give them a good lesson on life and give them a chuckle or laugh while doing it.Be happy with the way you look, be satisfied with yourself and hidden in that message is one that well shows there are no free lunches in life.the 1971 edition I have has some very well done black and white drawings which are quite charming themselves. This is a great book to read to a class as it creates much discussion and allows the children to relate their own wishes and discuss them. This is one of those books that I hope does not go out of print as it has a timeless quality about it.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating for children of all ages
My son got this book when he was barely 3. He loved it from the first day, even though it is written for a much older child. Now almost 5, he still loves this book---he will spend a full hour with it, examining every page, peering at the details, noting each child's way of life. In a small way, it has exposed him to ways of life he'd never otherwise know at his age.

Beautiful book that helps to understand how kids from other places live and what their lives are like. The pictures are stunning and the text is interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on every kid's bookshelf
In a world where we're all struggling to be a little bit more compassionate towards each other, this book is a must-have.My daughter got it when she was 3 and stared in fascination at the wonderful, clear pictures of children from all over the world.(One bonus is that this is a book that kids can "read" themselves.)Now that she's 4 she looks at the pictures and connects them to places on the globe with glee. She seems to delight in feeling a real connection to children from all over the world.Sharing this book with my child is always a wonderful experience - we discover something new each time. ... Editorial Review

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite! More than meets the eye!
The Cat in the Hat at first glance may seem like a nonsensical text meant merely to amuse its readers. If you stop and ponder this story of two children left at home alone one afternoon, you soon realize there is a more powerful message than first meets the eye. The children clearly know the difference between right and wrong, but with the slightest influence from the Cat, they easily give in. I believe the fish represents their conscience. They choose to ignore its warning time and again, and therefore, find themselves in a mountain of mess. Before the story's end, they are able to right the wrongs, but we as readers are left with this thought and question: "Then our mother came in and she said to us two, "Did you have any fun, tell me what did you do?" Should we tell her about it? Now what SHOULD we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?" (Seuss, 60-61).

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Child needs to sit on a pumkin at least as big as they are!
I discovered and checked this book out for the first time a few weeks after I had taken my son to the pumkin farm, and after Thanksgiving had passed. We were delighted with the beautiful artwork (colored pencil drawings). The texture and dimension in the artwork is exquisite. The simple story line is perfect for the young child of 2-5.Jamie is met with a variety of curious animals while he pursues a journey of growing and harvesting his very own pumpkin, carving it, decorating his face for Halloween (you hardly notice this in the soft hues of the artwork, but his pet dog certainly does)and saving the seeds for the next season (six, to be exact). It would make a fine early reader as well for a k-2 reader.Nice book!

5-0 out of 5 stars All the children I've read this too loved it.!
I got this book many years ago, when I took care of a class of 4 year olds. They loved this book and read the book with me.Now that I have a child of my own (almost 2 years old) it is his favorite book.I read it sometimes 10 times a day and it has wonderful illustrations.I never tire of it and am looking to buy more of Jeanne Titherington's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers
I teach English to a fifth grade that had very little instruction in the past. I gave this book to three girls and they could understand the meaning of words using the picture clues. One of them had never heard the word pumpkin before, let alone sprout or seed. Now they all have a better vocabulary. Last year I read the same book to a first grade that did not have English classes. I used the story to teach plant growth and sequence concepts. The year before I had also used it to teach subtraction and backward counting - Jamie saved 6 seeds. He plants one. At breakfast, The Man with the Yellow Hat tells George that he has a surprise planned and lots to do to get ready. "You can help me by staying out of trouble" says the man. George is happy to help, but you know how curious George can be...
5-0 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Curious George?
I bought this book to use as favors for my children's birthday party. The party was taking their cousins/friends to see the movie Curious George. It's a very cute book and Curious George's curiousity doesn't get him in too much trouble. It shows all the things that the man in the yellow hat does to prepare for a surprise party for George. It's great to see my children (3 and 5) enjoying book characters that I enjoyed as a child.

Editorial Review

A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Never trust your therapist
My therapist recommended that I read this book, for reasons unknown to me. It is a good children's book, but not for an adult suffering from agoraphobia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me real
Who would've thought that I would learn one of life's lessons tucked within a children's book?
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful heart-touching story...
Absolutely loved it.At first, I thought it was strange...Because I thought it would be animated, but instead it was a sequence of still pictures.Like, as if, you were reading the book. But, within the first few minutes I was hooked and a half hour flew by with a wonderful ending.Meryl Streep does a beautiful job narrating the story and the piano music by George Winston is lovely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take the scary out of ADHD for your kid
My [...] is a good reader so this book was at his level. However, we both sat down and read through it. It gave me some great hints as well as helping him to view his problem as managable. He especially liked the illustrations and puzzles scattered throughout the book - clearly with ADHD kids in mind! I am currently plowing through some adult books on ADHD and I keep referring back to this book for a more straight forward approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I got this book when my son was first diagnosed with ADHD and it is wonderful. It helped me understand what he was going through and him understand that he was just different. This book helped him to realize that he wasn't alone and that there are ways to help him help himself. My son feels that he has more control of things and is not afraid to ask questions or for help when needed. He not embarrased by ADHD it's just part of who he is.

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific tale!
I love this book - its the sweetest Halloween explaination I've ever heard. Before kids are ready for spooks and scares, this can help be a great introduction to dressing up and visiting neighbors. I love the characters and the illustrations - i can't wait for the sequel!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of the Halloween Fairy
This is a wonderful book for any fairy lover.I know this site recommends it for children 4 to 8 years old, however, all ages of fairy lovers will love it.I bought several copies for friends my own age and over and I am nearly retirement age. Both the author and illustrator do a wonderful job. You will do yourself a favor by buying a copy to add to your fairy book collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully fresh tribute to all who enjoy this time of year
As the fun of summer wears off, The Story of the Halloween Fairy brings children an introduction to the fall traditions of color, make believe and the spirit of giving which starts with preparation for Halloween, moves into the spirit of Thanksgiving and cumulates with the traditional religious holidays of Christmas and Hanukah. This story weaves the spirit of giving into the Halloween tradition and away from the bounty of a bag full of candy...and the resulting belly ache! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I like inventions a lot.
I am 7 years old.I wasn't very interested about the men in the book. But I was very interested about the inventions and the flying bicycle. And I hope 4 stars is good for me and you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great magic
This is the first Magic Tree House book I have experienced.I really enjoyed the book and think the author done an awesome job of incorporated history (through investions and scientific discoveries). The trips the two characters (Jack and Annie) take are not only an adventure but also educational.I would like to go back and read the books that came before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great from Mary Pope Osborne!
My son loves this whole series. If you have not started your child on these for age 5 and up, do so!These are the most interesting books for young kids. And so far the series has seem to grow up with my son. This book lists the scientists such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and others. These books really start a child learning about history. My son is so much into this history of these, it has led him to research on his own through other books about the historical events! We have also read the accompanying research books. The only thing I wish for now, is some children travel guides from Mrs. Osborne (it would be a great add on to the research books!). Thanks so much for these! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Despereaux is a fun book.
I would recommend this book, The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo for animal lovers and lovers of fantasy. Despereaux, a mouse, is born in the medieval times.A rat named Roscuro captures the princess and the brave mouse Despereaux goes to save her. The book is about bravery no matter how small you are.
4-0 out of 5 stars A book review of "The Tale of Despereaux" by Chris C.
The main characters in this book are a mouse named Despereaux, the Thread Master, Princess Pea, King Phillip, Miggery Sow and a rat named Roscuro. The story mainly takes place in King Phillip's castle and the dungeon. The story begins when Despereaux Tilling is born.He was born in the light. He was born with his eyes open and he had big ears. All of the mice were very suspicious of him since he was born with his eyes open.He was the smallest mouse to be seen by the other mice in all of the castle.Only his family was nice to him.
