Editorial Review

For the first time in a decade, Willy Wonka, the reclusive and eccentric chocolate maker, is opening his doors to the public--well, five members of the public to be exact. The lucky five who find a Golden Ticket in their Wonka chocolate bars will receive a private tour of the factory, given by Mr. Wonka himself. For young Charlie Bucket, this a dream come true. And, when he finds a dollar bill in the street, he can't help but buy two Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delights--even though his impoverished family could certainly use the extra dollar for food. But as Charlie unwraps the second chocolate bar, he sees the glimmer of gold just under the wrapper! The very next day, Charlie, along with his unworthy fellow winners Mike Teavee, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Augustus Gloop, steps through the factory gates to discover whether or not the rumors surrounding the Chocolate Factory and its mysterious owner are true. What they find is that the gossip can't compare to the extraordinary truth, and for Charlie, life will never be the same again. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SCRUMDIDLEUMPTIOUS!
The mysterious candy maker ''Willy Wonka'' is hiding five golden tickets in his famous ''Wonka Bars''. The children lucky enough to findthese tickets will be taken on a tour (hosted by Mr. Wonka himself) of the enormous Wonka factory. The world is searching frantically for the tickets, and the first person to find one is ''Augustus Gloop'' a greedy German boy is addicted to chocolate. The second ticket finder is ''Veruca Salt'' a spoiled little girl who quite literally gets everything she asks for, no matter how absurd her request is. The person who discovers the third ticket is ''Mike Teave'' an irritable boy addicted to TV. ''Be quiet'' he tells whoever is foolish enough to ask him a question while his show is on ''THIS is the life''. ''Violet Beauragrde'', a dimwitted gum chewing girl finds the fourth ticket, (she had to give up gum-chewing for a while so she could switch to chocolate. And the title character ''Charlie Bucket'' finds the fifth and final golden ticket which was quite a miracle, considering how poor his family was and how little money they had to spend on luxuries such as candy. This motely crew of children are allowed to discover the wonders of Mr. Wonka's factory.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's about just desserts and not just about desserts
Reading a novel after having seen a cinematic adaptation is always a challenge. One of the deepest joys of reading---relying on one's imagination to create the characters, their voices, the locales, etc.---is preempted and nullified by the choices made by directors, producers, casting agents, and set designers. Thankfully, the best books which have been adapted for the screen are complex and spacious enough that they allow some free play in spite of this imaginative preemption, and such is the case with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE CHOCOLATEY BOOK EVER!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book/Trilogy!
I was looking for something to get me through the long wait until HP book 7 will be published and...well, I came across this Trilogy and I am so glad I did! It is absolutely incredible....just like with HP, once you start to read you get pulled into a magical world, which you do not want to leave from! Too bad there are only 3 books in this trilogy! It's an absolute musthave for everybody who loves mystical books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Original vision, flawed plot
This feels like a book that the author started at the end and worked his way back to the beginning. He had an idea for how the book -- and the series as a whole -- should end, and then, working backwards, constructed a plot to make that end happen. The good aspect of the book is that it's a fine and meaningful end (although controversial); the negative aspect is that the journey to the end is full of awkward plot devices that rob the ending of some satisfaction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Superb ending to trilogy
An excellent ending to the trilogy. Fast-paced without sacrificing characterisation, and a satisfying end to the conundrum of Nathaniel. A great deal has been made of the character of Bartimaeus, the wise-cracking djinn; this volume maintains the level of his characterisation, and adds some affecting glimpses of his past with the eponymous Ptolemy. However, the chilly, complex Nathaniel, and his tentative, developing relationship with Kitty Jones the revolutionary, which tracks and depends on his tentative, developing relationship with his own conscience, is what gives the climax its poignancy. It adds an important dimension to the human protagonists' actions that, as Stroud occasionally reminds us, they are still only adolescents, cast into roles and situations that would tax full-fledged and experienced adults. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
I thought these books, just like the others, were amazing! They added plot and depth and mystery to the storyline and put me on the edge of my seat! I can't wait for the next books!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Gloom Loons... FOR REAL!!!
"The Trouble Begins" was wonderful. "The Situation Worsens" was okay. "The Dillemma Deepens" were dull but interesting. THIS???????? It's a disgrace!!! I could put up with Lemony Snicket's talking for a while but this is insane!! I had to skip whole pages just to keep awake!? I mean WHO, WHO with the right mind wants definitions, stupid stories and lectures in an ADVENTURE BOOK!? But not just that, it becoming SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! At first, the Series of Unfortunate Events was wonderful, full of adventure and mystery and exiting parts. Now, what I see is count olaf giving up on the children and the children going with a STUPID organization and DULLL characters and etc. and etc. and etc. I was so disssapointed with "The grim grotto" that I don't want to even see a page of "The Penulitamate Peril" that is the hardest to say. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY OR EXITEMENT FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK, IF YOU LIKED THE BAD BEGGINNING, THE WIDE WINDOW, OR EVEN THE DULL MISERABLE MILL, THIS IS NOT THE SEQUEL FOR YOU. AS I SAID THE GLOOM REALLY LOOMS!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars So dull! So dull!
What happened to the Bad Begginning? The Wide Window? This is dull dull dull! No exiting parts! And Lemony Snicket is constantly writing about himself! Who wants to have lectures in an adventure book???!!! And it gettin' (...) ... Read more

Editorial Review

For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to.Butnot for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's HarryPotter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig. 4-0 out of 5 stars I like the book
I choose to read Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban this summer,as a summer reading book because I thought the movie was good. So , I decided to read the book and see what is different and the same. J.k. Rowling has a great nack for writing children's because i love the books she writes. What I don't like is that the book ends and doesn't say where Harry stays. Does he stay with his godparent or dr does he go back to his uncle & aunts house.Maybe he stays with his godparent or go's to his uncles or he stays in hogwarts. I would like to read the fourth book to find out.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was a great book
This summer i read the book Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban. I thought the book was greta and so was the movie. In the book there is some parts that are the same in the movie and somethings that are in the book not in the movie. That is what i did not like about the book the parts should of been explain so you could understand it more. Overall i like reading Harry Potter books because they are very interesting and exciting to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is very funny !!! great book!!!
This is a plot for everyone because it is very entertaining. It is also very easy to understand. Once you start reading, you can hardly put the book down. There are also links to other episodes of the book that makes the reader want to read more. There are usages of magic, fantasy creatures, and competitive sports in the plot to create colorful variety to the audience. J.K. Rowling uses the purity of adolescence and interprets it in the form of courage, cooperation, and youthful innocence that showed the power to overcome many things.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing edition
One has to wonder if the other reviewers either didn't actually use this book or if they work for Barron's because this book is a very sloppy effort and should be an embarrassment to Barron's, especially the chief editor, Nathan Quinones. To begin with, anyone using previous editions of this book will notice that almost all of the errors remain in the book. Misspelling, misplaced accents, they're all still exactly where they were in previous editions of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars great format -- tons of typos
I have been using this book and find the format helpful. However, I have come across numerous errors/typos, which can be confusing for a beginning language student.Additionally, the CDs included with the book do not match the lessons. It is almost as if the CDs were made for an earlier edition and never updated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indeed, the "fairest of them all"
Aza ins't just plain; she's plain ugly. In a land where song, grace, and beauty are prized, Aza's large stature (not just in heighth but also breadth) are deemed appalling and overshadow her amazing abilities in singing. Abandoned at the Featherbed Inn as a newborn, she is lovingly raised by her foster family. But their love can't oversome the low self-esteem Aza develops because of how other people treat her. When an unexpected chance to travel to court for a royal wedding comes, Aza is hesitant but goes to help her family. There, she is "befriended" by the new queen, Ivi, who is selfish and self-absorbed. Soon after the wedding, the king is severally injured and Ivi is claimed ruler in his place. Forcing Aza to use her unusual ability to project her voice for her own gains, the queen quickly becomes a dictator that threatens Aza's honor, her tenuous relationship with Prince Ijori (the king's nephew and heir), and the country in general. Can Aza overcome her own lack of self-assurance to save herself and her land?

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful retelling of Snow White
As a newborn, Aza was left at the Featherbed Inn in the village of Amonta, Ayortha.Though a baby, she was singing, which brought her to the attention of the kind innkeepers Father and Mother, who raise her with love alongside their biological offspring. However, Aza is far from pretty so as to not disturb their customers; she remains hidden when the inn is open for business.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Review from a Perfect Score
The book starts off at Harry's aunt and uncle's house. Harry goes back to Hogwarts for his second year at school. There is a new character and his name is "Dobby." He is a slave. He does not want Harry Potter to go to Hogwarts. Dobby made it so that Harry could not get on the train so Harry took a flying car. And Dobby made the Blunger in Quitage chase him and break his arm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Criss Cross
Criss Cross by Lenna Rae Perkins is a Newbery Award winnig book. i think that I really liked this book because it had a lot to do with friends and since i'm a social person then it was the right book for me. I rated this book a our because it had very good details as i was expexting from the author. i would recommened that you read this book if you're really patient with waiting on for the climax of the story to happen. it ahs a lot of great personalities mixed in with the characters. i thik that they all formed together to make the book really interesting. my favorite character of the book would have to be Jenny. Ithink that she was the best character out of all of the characters in the book. so if you have the patience to read a book and you're not worried about getting to the end, then i think that you'll havegood time with it. R.Copeland

4-0 out of 5 stars Good BUT Pointless
Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins is the story of kids who travel down different paths in life while growing up. Debbie wishes something would happen. Hector tries new things. Lenny, Phil, and Patty kind of feel the same. It talks about people coming and going, crushes and such between the younger crowd. Some parts are boring. Others are confusing. Some parts are interesting and you'll want to know what happens next. But the book just keeps going on about these friends - which is pointless. I recommend reading it, however.

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
Perhaps it's just me, but I read a lot of books, both for young readers and adults, and I have had a very difficult time getting into this book. The writing seems forced, rather than lyrical. And I can certainly see why young readers would feel distanced from the main characters.I will keep trying but so far this is a disappointment, especially for a Newbery award. ... Read more

I bought this box set because of readers reviews & I could not be more happy. My son follows me around the house and has asked me at 7am to read more Captain Underpants, how can I say no... he loves it and we love it too.The author does a great job presenting the stories in a way kids and parents will love.I am waiting to see an ACME product in the book to along with the PATSY 2000, 3-D imaging machine.

Funny ,Yet Bawdy reading. My seven year old brought one of these home from the school library one day. Although initially shocked by the bathroom humour in the book I realized my son was reading as fast as he could. This is the adult equivalent of a "couldn't put it down" novel. I purchased the 5 book series and tried rationing the books over a week or so. Let me tell you , he wanted the next book as soon as he finished the previous one.It is important to note that this should not be the only type of reading your child should do, I look at these books a kind of a fun playful reward, like a movie or music.

My daughter discovered the Captain Underpants series a couple of months ago and I have to say, at first I wasn't sure I wanted to encourage her reading nonsense material. When I read the titles of the books, I had such a laugh and it really hit me why some kids love these books--they are sooo funny and it's exactly the kind of thing that a attracts a child.Kids love potty talk and silly pictures and the seeing Harold and his friend get into constant trouble with the principle at their school. These jokesters are forever playing pranks and trying to get themselves out of trouble.Yes, it's complete nonsense, but, it got my daugther to read chapter books!she's hooked. She loves to read and it's her love for reading that I'm encouraging not the nonsense. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Charlie Bone Book
It' about this boy named Charlie Bone and he has to find the Mirror of Amoret before The Shadow takes his mother away. What I liked the best about this book was that there was always a new surprise around the corner. What i disliked about the book was that the ending just left you hanging. It didn't really finish the way I thought it would, but it was still really exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good book
Not sure if this is the last book in the series or not. It ends abruptly. However, it was a good book to read, so 4 stars. I had Artemis Fowl, and 2 Charlie Bone books at the same time. I read all, but my kids dropped Charlie in favor of Artemis. Hence the 4 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the Ending
This book is, as usual, Charlie Bone and his adventures. Unlike the other books, this one is not about keeping some child secret from the bloors but stoping a horrible creature from destroying the city: The Shadow from the Red King's painting. In his quest to stop the shadow, Charlie encounters magic mirrors, frozen relatives, disappearing animals, a witch disquised as a teacher, and many more. Want to know more? Read the book.

Editorial Review

More than 60 years have not dated this wonderfully absurd tale--itstill makes kids (and parents) laugh out loud. Poor Mr. Popper isn't exactly unhappy; he just wishes he had seen something of the world before meeting Mrs. Popper and settling down. Most of all, he wishes he had seen the Poles, and spends his spare time between house-painting jobs reading all about polar explorations. Admiral Drake, in response to Mr. Popper's fan letter, sends him a penguin; life at 432 Proudfoot Avenue is never the same again. From one penguin living in the icebox, the Popper family grows to include 12 penguins, all of whom must be fed. Thus is born "Popper's Performing Penguins, First Time on Any Stage, Direct from the South Pole." Their adventures while on tour are hilarious, with numerous slapstick moments as the penguins disrupt other acts and invade hotels. Classic chapter-a-night fun. (Ages 5 to 10) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Popper's Is Easy reading
Mr. Popper's Penguins is an easy read for a twelve-year old boy, and I found it enjoyable. It wasn't necessarily suspenseful, but each chapter ended with a problem that needed to be solved. This book would be great to use for a book report. The characters in the story are well developed and can be compared and contrasted. It would also be a great read-aloud for little children because of the silliness in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic
I loved this book when my second grade teacher read it to us over 43 years ago.My second graders love it today. There are so many extras to learn with the actual story - what life was like before television, when people traveled by train, when people went to see newsreels, when people saw trained animal acts at the theater...And they love all the funny things that happen to poor Mr. Popper and his family. They learned about Antarctica and the explorers like Admiral Drake and Captain Cook. They wrote about how they thought the story would end. Then they wrote letters back home but I don't want to give any more away. You'll fall for these lovable penguins and their family too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr.Popper's Penguins
Mr.Popper's Penguins is the best book. and because it is old and a lot of people still read it is very amazing. I think that everyone should read it. When Mr.Popper gets a penguin by mail and then he trains them too do perforemences and when someone that goes on stage doesn't appear so they go on stage and become famouse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun!!!
I have a just turned 5 year old that LOVES science and experiments.Although this book I believe was recommended for older children, there are plenty of experiments that I can do with him at his age and get immediate results.Since there are experiments that are targeted for older children, this is one of the rare books that we'll be able to use for several years down the road.I love it so much it's going to be one of my staples in gift giving - it's easy & fun enough for those even not interested in 'science'.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for young minds
My 6 year old son absolutely loves this book.He was so excited about the experiments that everyone we knew was told about the new experiment. He understanding what he is doing with the experiments.I would recommend this book and I have to his teacher at school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kidz Love Science
I bought this book for my son, and liked it so much that I bought 10 copies to give to each child at my son's birthday party. He wanted a science party so this was the perfect take-home gift for the kids. Beats a goody bag full of candy and plastic toys... but I don't want to digress on how I hate goody bags at birthday parties! The experiments here are interesting and easy to set up.And, the puzzles and games on the side make it something the kids can pick up and read on their own. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Note on version
I order this book as it is listed as coming with a CD.However when the book arrived it was the version without the CD.I called and was told the wrong book was sent in error and the correct book was will be shipped out. When that book arrive it was the same version that was sent originally, without the CD.Again a call to Amazon to ask about the book and the wrong version, they then informed me that they no longer have the CD version.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the First Book
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I read the first novel with a little disappointment because I found it a bit perdictable, but this 2nd book in the series was a true delight.
5-0 out of 5 stars best book ever
