5-0 out of 5 stars Blackie, The Horse Who Stood Still
This title was purchased for my grand children yet it was my wife and myself who "entered" this special story before passing it on to our younger readers. Mr. Cerf's words reminded us of times past while Ms. Peterson's broad and colorful brush strokes brought life to each page.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Children's Book since Cat in the Hat
Truly an inspiration, the book incorporates a heartwarming narrative with a poignant message of environmental preservation .Congratulations to both the author and illustrator as "Blackie, The Horse Who Stood Still" is clearly the number 1 children's tale in recent memory as it recaptures the innocence and beauty of childhood.I highly recommend it to all ages as I know anyone who reads it will be as touched as I was.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Oh my friends, I always wanted a family. You are my family...Just as I protect you, so you protect me. I am grateful"
This Newbery honor book is the story of families of origin and families of creation. It is also a tale depicting the power of love and of story. Framed within the present in which Ben and Abby, brother and sister, spend time in their grandfather's barn listening to a tale told by the barn cat, Whittington, who is a descendant of the fabled Dick Whittington's cat. The novel "Whittington" moves between a re-telling of the medieval Whittington tale to two present day tales in which Ben is struggling to read and the animals are struggling for primacy in the barn.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Retelling of a Classic Story
This is a marvelous retelling of a classic children's story, as told to a group of farm animals and children by--of course--a cat. Dick Whittington was a real person and while the story somewhat enhances the truth, it is still worth reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ashley's favorite book
The Hostile Hospital by Lemony Snicket was a great book in my opinion. This book is about three Baudelaires named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. I liked this book because it was an adventure story. This story made me not want to put the book down.My favorite part was when they were running from the shopkeeper of the Last Chance General Store and the mailman that was delivering the paper. They snuck out of the store and got into the V. F. D.'s van.V.F.D means "Volunteers Fighting Disease." I read this book, and I think you should too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Turn of Events.
Dear Reader,
5-0 out of 5 stars Lemony Snicket breaks the formula and succeeds
The first seven books of A Series of Unfortunate Events followed the same formula. The Baudelaire Orphans are with the banker Mr. Poe until he can find a new relative willing to care for the siblings. Things go badly and the evil Count Olaf shows up with another nefarious plan to kidnap the children and somehow steal their inheritance. In the end they get away and Olaf is on the run from the authorities. The ending of The Vile Village changes this. The Baudelaires are on the run, suspected of the murder of Count Olaf despite the fact that he isn't dead and that there is no way they could have committed the non-existent crime. The Hostile Hospital opens with the orphans trying to find a place where they can learn about VFD, the Quagmire triplets, and some clue that will help keep them safe and stop Count Olaf from coming after them ever again. This time there is no Mr. Poe and no new distant relative to live with. Count Olaf is in much less of this book than we have come to expect, though he and his cronies play major roles in instigating the action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Gone are the days of boring, cumbersome, and, ultimately, not all that helpful encyclopedias. The new king of interesting resource information is here, and it's called PICK ME UP.Everything you've ever wanted to know about just about anything (and maybe even some stuff you didn't even know you wanted to know!) is included in the 300+ pages of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like My Dad Said...
You learn something everyday!I got a copy of "Pick Me Up" and learn a lot of new things. It also reminded me how I liked to pour through volume of encyclopedias when I was a kid. "Pick Me Up" is a great reference book, conversation-starter, and bathroom book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Fun Book!
If you are someone who considers yourself an information junky then "Pick Me Up," is a book you will enjoy. It would be easy to say this is a book just for kids or teens, but Pick Me Up is a book that parents and educators will find useful and interesting as well. The full color book is so interesting and such eye candy that teens will want to close the lid on their laptops to check out this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A DELIGHTFUL BOOK - WOULD BE A GREAT PRESENT FOR THE DRAGON LOVER
I was truely impressed with this offering. This is a wonderful little book about just what the title indicates "Dragonology."The entire book is producted in a sort of medieval mode, with wonderful illustrations. The books if filled with maps, puzzels, drawings, anatomy lessons (dragons of course), life styles (again, dragons) types, habits, origins, lore and even riddles. The work is quite a combination of originality and pure imagination from the author. This is one of those books that might first appear to be classified as juvinal, but it is so much more. The art work alone is worth the price of the book. The text is imaginative yet quite realistic in it's presentation. As I said, I was truely impressed with this one and highly recommend it.This would make a wonderful gift for any lover of dragons, dragon lore or for that matter just a fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars LET YOUR IMAGINATION SORE!
If you like dragons, this is for you. Dragonology is a book for any age. It's cool that they show dragon skin and dragon dust. This book gave me more info on dragons, and I believe in dragons. I read in one night and I am always going back to it. I love dragons more, than I did, before I read the book. This book will leave you with all smiles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at the "real" world of the legendary dragon
"Authored" by noted dragonologist "Dr. Ernest Drake," "Dragonology" is a short but concise "encyclopedia" for anyone interested in the winged creatures of international lore.Divided into eight chapters, covering such diverse topics as "dragons of the world," "dragon biology and physiology," and "dragon behaviour," the book is profusely illustrated and generously features such hands-on additions as "dragon dust" and pieces of "dragon skin," all designed to satisfy even the casual dragon fan.

Well I remembered how much I loved the Narnia series when I was a kid so when I saw all seven books in a box set I had to have them. There is one thing bothering me though, do these books seem shorter to anyone else?I was sure that the books had more pages to them when I first read them, or maybe it was because I was smaller back then!Anyway, I am glad to own the set, I can't wait to give them to my kids to read if I ever have any...

i bought the 7 books set because i am a great fun of tolkien and i had read about lewis in his biography
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Fun!
I have not read these books since I was quite young. It was great to see they have withstood the test of time.I enjoyed them as an adult as much as I did when I was a kid.The boxed set is something I will enjoy having in my library and reading again and again. They really are timeless stories.I wish they would make films of more of them.

Editorial Review

This Roald Dahl classic tells the scary, funny and imaginative tale of a seven-year-old boy who has a run-in with some real-life witches! "In fairy tales witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch."Witches, as our hero learns, hate children. With the help of a friend and his somewhat-magical grandmother, our hero tries to expose the witches before they dispose of him. Ages 7-12. ... Read more

A little boy and his grandmother go off to a hotel for the weekend.Come to find out his weekend turns into a tragic event when he runs into a group of witches. His life will never be the same. The little boy finds a evil plot to get rid of all the witches of England.
5-0 out of 5 stars What an experience!
I have to admit I actually have no idea this book exist. I actually thought the movie was an original and not a book adaptation. Nevertheless it was a pleasant surprise to actually read this book and it wasn't a let down either since it's the first time ever for me to read one of Roald Dahl's work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific, Clean Story
Dahl delivers again with the story that will capture your imagination within the first chapter. He effectively creates a fantastic, yet believable world in which your discomfort compels you to read on. Dahl's description of witches and their perception of children is just plain disturbing, but in a good way!

It's mostly about- it is about three, wealthy, intelligent, children whose parent passed away in a fire while the children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny were atthe beach. When the children find a new home, they discover that their foster parent is trying to steel their fortune. In every book, at least the first five I've read, that the foster parent discise himself in order to steel their fortune. Editorial Review

Fans of Lemony Snicket's wonderful Series of Unfortunate Events won't besurprised to find that in the sixth installment the three Baudelaire orphans'new home proves to be something of a mixed bag. As our ever sad but helpfulnarrator states, "Although 'a mixed bag' sometimes refers to a plastic bag thathas been stirred in a bowl, more often it is used to describe a situation thathas both good parts and bad parts. An afternoon at the movie theater, forinstance, would be a mixed bag if your favorite movie were showing, but if youhad to eat gravel instead of popcorn. A trip to the zoo would be a very mixedbag if the weather were beautiful, but all of the man-and woman-eating lionswere running around loose." And so it is for the bad-luck Baudelaires. Theirfancy new 71-bedroom home on 667 Dark Avenue is inhabited by Esmé GigiGeniveve Squalor (the city's sixth most important financial advisor), and herkindly husband, Jerome, who doesn't like to argue. Esmé is obsessed bythe trends du jour (orphans are "in"), and because elevators are "out," Sunny,Violet, and Klaus have to trudge up 66 flights of stairs to reach the Squalors'penthouse apartment. (Other unfortunate trends include pinstripe suits, aqueousmartinis--water with a faint olive-y taste--parsley soda, and oceandecorations.) Read more

I read this book with my mom and we both loved it!This book has an interesting beginning, a strange middle and a suspenseful ending. The author put in lots of creative puns and amusing ways to use words. For example, Milo (the boy) thinks he going to meet a witch in the dungeon, but actually he meets a "Which" who chooses which words to say and which words not to say. I liked how numbers were gems and words were food.Personally, I believe that words are more valuable than numbers.I think the author just plain rocks!
5-0 out of 5 stars Magical and Metaphorical
I read the Phantom Tollbooth when I was a kid and absolutely loved it.The strange characters who all seem to control something uncontrollable (sound, color, and so on) stayed with me for years afterwards, so that when I saw it on the bargain table in the book store I decided to pick it up again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ida B.
This character in this book, Ida B., is like Junie B. Jones 4 years later.Only in this case, it's as if she's met up with the apple trees from the Wizard of Oz or Grandmother Willow from Pocahontas.A little too cutzy for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just amazing
This book is just plain amazing. Katherin Hannagin is very good at expressing the characters feelings. Shes also very descriptive. She knows how to make us feel what the characters feel and thats pretty hard to do, and shes very good at making things funny at the right time. I loved this book so much. That is why I feel that "Ida B" should have 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ida B-eautiful!
This book is written with the right touch.Katherine Hannigan added beautiful things like similes, sad moments, and a pinch of smiles. This book is my favorite book throughout the ten years in my life. But Ida B isn't really like a normal 9 or 10 year old girl. She's too honest, and doesn't cause any mischief. I'm sure that just about any kid will cause some mischief! But the plot line is just beautiful! I you're a first time chapter book reader, I suggest this book. But maybe it is good that she is like a perfect little girl. Maybe the people who read this will want to be like this beloved little girl. And will take responsibility in their actions. So, if you want to read a book that is a mixture of smiles, tears, and some humor, I suggest Ida B. Also, my second favorite book, Because of Winn-Dixie. Also a mixture of smiles, tears (a lot of 'em), and a pinch of humor! I hope this review helped! The fifth star is missing because of the character, Ida B, is not like a realistic girl. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart
This is a captivating children's story that will make you looking forward to the next book of the series.I think it is smart on the part of the author to finish this Book 1 just after Kate follows Matt into Abadazad. This is exactly why the readers will wait for Book 2.My problem, however, is that the story was not long enough.I wish the book contained 280 pages, instead of 140.It would also make me feel that my money was well spend...Otherwise the book is great, nicely designed, with vibrant colors. Overall I rate it for 4.5 stars. If I were to recommend another great new children's book series, it would be "Why Some Cats are Rascals" (5 stars *****) - mainly for its educational value, althought the story is also fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid adventure.
Take the graphic novel format, add full color, and add more text to get a vivid enchanting diary/journal of magic, adventure, and a friendless child whose life changes. A journey to another world makes for vivid adventure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply moving story with sumptuous illustrations
These books share a trait with Alice in Wonderland/Looking Glass in having multiple layers of meaning.Alice books were a bit too mental when I read them in my young age, and fully appreciated them only after I had grown up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book about real life
This book is a very good book that puts you inside of 11 year old Parvana's shoes. It depicts the horrors of life under the taliban rule well. While it is grusome, the auther shows the horrors without too much detail, so it is safe for younger readers, though i wound not recemend it to anyone younger than 10. You see life in this war torn land from the eyes of a girl worring about her father in jail, while forced to hide her true identity so her family can survive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best educational book ever

5-0 out of 5 stars My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio. They can be enjoyed time and time again. My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture. While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced. In same ways the second book is superior to the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustration of Life on the Frontier
After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.
