5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection!
I have been reading this book aloud to my 8yo daughter and 6yo son.Even though my son initially showed no interest when I brought the book out (robots and dinosaurs are more his thing) he has been riveted, and my animal-loving daughter has been especially interested in each story, and each picture.
5-0 out of 5 stars This gift to our grandchildren will be special.
I've had the pleasure of reading all of the James Herriot books. The stories and wonderful illustrations in this book
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book to read to small ones at bedtime
With two small boys, I think I've read or have become acquainted with much of the literature available for parents who read to their children in the evening. This setting of James Herriot's stories, with their accompanying illustrations, is top notch, head and shoulders above anything else I've seen. The stories are heartwarming but realistic enough to avoid being saccharine--animals die or get injured--and the overall message is a good one:it's our responsibility to care for God's creation, especially the animals we have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An American Classic (good history supplement)
Almost 5 Stars
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Often overlooked
There aren't enough children's stories that are based on Americanheroes, so this one definitely desreves much recognition. Appleseed's character is based on a true character, yet there is a a fair amount ofmyth in the story to keep things interesting and the children engaged; this book is a definitely a treat

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Book About Johnny Appleseed/Chapman
My children and I seem to be on a Johnny Appleseed binge. This is one of the three books that we have read lately and our second favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Apple Pick for Children
I purchased this book last fall for our kindergarten "apple and pumpkin" theme of learning. The short text and big, colorful pictures make this an excellent choice for 4 to 8 year olds. Yet, I was surprised by how much I learned from this book! This non-fiction text covers the growth of the apple tree and it's fruit with plenty of labels and a simple definition for each new word.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing Details
I agree with the review from "From School Library Journal." I did think that this book had excellent pictures and a lot of good information but did not think that it was complete.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Kids who are interested in horses really need a mentor who is experienced in all aspects of the care and handling of horses. And they could certainly use Horse Care for Kids by Cherry Hill, a horse trainer and breeder. In the past, Hill has been a judge and taught courses in horse management and training. She is also the author of 24 equestrian books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner horse book for kids
This book has wonderful illustrations depicting how to halter a horse, body language of a horse, horse colors, grooming a horse, and many more practical things to teach you to become a responsible and successful horse or pony owner. It is an easy- to-read book with 116 very informational pages. I highly recommend this book for any child interested in horses, especially one who is thinking about owning a horse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pot-Bellied Pigs and other miniature pet pigs
I received a phone call letting me know of my new arrival.....a Mini Pot-Bellied Pig!I knew NOTHING about the care and keeping of my newfound pet and ordered this book for starters.I received this book from one of Amazon's great used book sellers and immediately began to read. This book is of quality binding with great pictures to illustrate the unique colors and sizes (as well as the different environments in which they can be kept). The pages are thick and high-gloss as well. The cover is sturdy, high-gloss and compact (great to throw in a purse for sharing). The typeface is large and bold for ease of reading. The content is perfect for an overview of EXACTLY what I needed - brief, thorough and to the point.I was able to sit down and absorb the information given in about an hour and a half.I am sure there are many other books which give are more indepth, but this one served it's function - a fast course in the keeping, care, history, Laws, Resources, Products and the choosing of a quality pet pig!For the price, it is a MUST for the beginner!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pot-Bellied Pigs and Other.....
The strengths this book offers different from the other pig books is, alot of registry information, also many varied photos, and the best boardingtips I've seen. The author has a knowledge of pigs from their US arrival inthe 80's. Weaknesses are: the annoying print, the very small trainingsection, and that some conformation ideas have changed, and also having thesame girls repeatedly in the photos. Overall it added to my pigly knowledgethough, which is what I'm after.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good starter book, but lacks depth for care
This book will provide some basic info for potential potbellied pig owners but is very general in most topics.Print style is annoying to the point that one would think the author needed to fill up more pages by enlargingthe font. ... Read more

I live on a farm and have almost every one of Gail Damerow's books. They are great for beginners, as I was, and for anyone simply looking for information on farm animals. This book in particular helped me with my goats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Goats: A Kids Guide To Raising and Showing
I'm going to be getting a dairy goat soon, and this book was very helpful. It tells you all you need to know about different kinds of goats, feeding, housing, health, and so much more. I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars new goat owner handbook
i recently gave my boyfriend a fainting goat, to join his aging wether which came with his rural property. he is from chicago, and knew nothing about the care, feeding, or otherwise necessary knowledge regarding goats. he has raved about this book, and is reading it cover to cover, sharing enthusiastically about his newly aquired knowledge. i also read it before giving it to him, and agree that although this book appears to be geared toward the younger owner, it is invaluable to anyone starting out as a goat owner, as well as a reference book for those needing reminders. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is a great resource for teachers and students. The book does a great job of explaining the milk process. After reading this book, it is easy to make butter by putting 1 tablespoon of heavy cream in a 35mm film case and shake it rapidly for 3-4 minutes until butter is formed!Kids and adults love to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great book for learning about the whole process. Our 2.5 year old loves it although some parts are a little more complex than I had hoped they would be.We read it often, and he now knows milk comes from cows (and goats) and not just from the store. He will probably make us buy goat milk soon. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Alaskan Adventure for Kids
I teach an afterschool literacy program for children in 3rd-6th grades. My 3rd grade struggling readers loved this story! However, you need to give them the background information ahead of time for them to get the most out of this story. We looked at copies of the original news stories and pictures of the real Balto, read books about Alaska and the Iditarod Race, and learned about "dogs with jobs" before we opened this book. The easy reading level and great illustrations made this a joy to read for my reluctant readers. They wrote a "missing chapter" of the dogs' journey to Nome. Fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Beginning Reader Book
I tutor my 7 year-old niece, who is a second grade stuggling reader. She LOVED this book!Although I planned to make about three sessions out of the story she insisted on reading (aloud) right to the end even though the book is slightly above her 1.8 reading ability level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good job on an interesting and exciting true story!
I was interested in getting this book, because it is a true story, and the people in the story are relatives of mine.Balto was really the dog who saved the children of Nome. His owner was Hal Seppala, a Sami reindeer herder from Finnmark Province, Norway.Balto was named after his friend, Samuel Balto.I wanted my grandchildren to be able to read the story for themselves.

Editorial Review

Artist Rien Poortvliet paints an impressive and certainly diverse range of subjects--gnomes, theological scenes, and now a book completely devoted to dogs! Canine fanatics will fall in love with Poortvliet's amazingly lifelike portraits of basset hounds, fox terriers, dalmatians, and just about every dog ever invented! The artist works with both oil and pencil, astutely observing the physique and even the unique spirits of different breeds. Short snippets of dog history and humor also accompany this majestic collection of paintings and drawings. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, perhaps the very best of its kind
I'm an animation artist whose medium is pen and pencil, and for me, Rien Poortvliet is hands down the greatest artist of his kind of the last 50 years, easily.Famous(almost too much so-eclipsing these other, superior and more personal books)for the "Gnomes" series of books of the 1970s, he was a man of amazing talent, terrific humor and also great humanity and sensitivity.Any of his books are worth having; this title, "Dogs" was the first I discovered, and it's also one of the very few easily available at this writing(9/05).Here are studies of many, many breeds of canines rendered in luscious oils, stunningly--but even better is the rest of the book:Poortvliet's own, intimate life experiences with dogs, a kind of illustrated diary done in pen, pencil and watercolor washes--absolutely brilliant. You'll meet and love Rien's dogs as he did, and if you've any interest or care for dogs at all this will likely become your favorite.I'd recommend this over any other coffee table or "art" book for dog lovers(I can't conceive of anyone not savoring this)...and for artists--!Wow.An absolute treasure trove of quick gesture drawings, studies and attitudes of both dogs AND people--as well as any other animal Rien feels like writing about and sketching--and there are plenty of them. This will teach the interested artist more than dozens of "how to" books of painting and drawing techniques could hope to do.Don't hesitiate--order it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for real dog people
The art is astohishing (as always with Poortvliet) but the book itself is a warm and sincere approach to the meaning of dogs in our lives. It is not technical or scientific but is a powerful read to dog lovers around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Marvelous
I am a crazy dog lady.I admit it.I can't pass a dachshound without stooping to say hi.My husband and I have even been known to park our car down the block so that we can casually stroll down the street and "accidentally" make the acquaintance of a sprightly-looking corgi or retreiver.Pathetic, we are, completely pathetic, but we absolutely don't care.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Autumn Time!A review of Picking Apples & Pumpkins
I'm confused by the July 17th 2002 review (Christinemm). There are no Trick or Treaters in our book, just pictures of a family and young friends on an outing to the orchard where they pick apples and pumpkins and have a picnic. After arriving home, the children bake a pie with Grandma's help and make jack-o-lanterns with dad.[There is another book with a similar title, perhaps Amazon has accidentally confused the two.]
4-0 out of 5 stars short and simple, includes Halloween
This is a very simple book about a caucasion family consisting of a daughter and mother and father who goes on an outing to pick apples and pumpkins in the fall. After the family picks out their pumpkin and apples they go home to make a jack-o-lantern. In the end the girl goes trick or treating with other children. Trick or treaters are dressed as a witch, devil, pirate, ghost, queen, and a monster. 5-0 out of 5 stars great book for classroom
This book is a great book to use with a unit on fall. You can teach the 1st part of the book in the 1st two weeks of a 4 week unit and then teach the 2nd part of the book for the last two weeks of the unit.I have used this book to teach about apples and pumpkins to a two year old class and I will using it again to teach a 4 year old class. Be creative. The children can learn the names of the characters. You can have a picnic lunch in your classroom, just like the characters in the book, do.Read more
