4-0 out of 5 stars A good read for me and my just-turned-3-year-old
This book has a cute, fun story with good illustrations like the other Scarry titles I've seen.I don't know how much my daughter is learning from it, except that Mr. Frumble is one unlucky guy.I haven't gotten tired of reading it, as happens sometimes, and that's as important as anything in the long run.It takes me 5-10 minutes to read, and I don't get into some of the outside-the-story details which I think would only distract my daughter from the story at this age.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!
Great book for child's first flight!Excellent conversation piece for child to describe what she saw and did. The book didn't miss a thing about the airport!Child still loves to read it!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this a genuine Richard Scarry book?
I think this is one of the "Richard Scarry" books, not a genuine Richard Scarry. The pictures don't look quite right and the writing is all wrong. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Big Book of Airplanes
As a 70 year old, I was so fascinated with this Big Book of Airplanes while at the dentist's office that I have since sent one to my grandson for Christmas and recently purchased a second one for a neighbor boy and a third one for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book!
This book is such a great treat to read with my 4-year old plane-crazy son.The photos are so clean and uncluttered. There's a ton of information, so this book would be great for older kids as well. From this book alone, my son has learned so much.We recently visited the Air museum in Chantilly, VA, and he ran around naming the different planes. As soon as we walked in, he said "A Blackbird!".Super book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos; interesting text

4-0 out of 5 stars FOR A TODDLER
It teaches the basic about planes.Easy to read outloud book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mommy and Daddy love this one too!
This book is fantastic in its simplicity, but under the short phrases and light graphics, there is a lot of detail. Not only is there a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, but the book starts and ends with the plane in the air.Normally, books have the plane taking off at the beginning and landing at the end, but this thoughtful touch by Byron allows the reader to imagine the plane "living" in the air, as they seem to do, with only brief stops on the ground.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction for little travelers
When we took our 1-year-old across the country via air, we wanted to prepare him for the experience of riding in an airplane.I sought out a book to show him pictures and came across this simple yet substantial book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Book!!
My 21 month old daughter just loves this book!We checked it out of the library and now I have to buy it because she wants it read every time we read a story. It is full of accurate bits of information on each aircraft that are approprite for any young child.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
The content of the book is good and my 2-year-old son enjoyed the book a lot. Unfortunately the paper is of low strength and is not up to the hard use that young users can dish out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning Illustrations!
My two-year-old son absolutely adores this book, even though the writing is directed at children above his age.He wants to go through the alphabet over and over with me (and yes, there are airplanes for every letter, including the Xandu and the Yak), stopping at his favorites. No jet aircraft are included in this book, with the possible exception of the Osprey, which the text admits is an unusual inclusion in the book; however, both military and civilian propeller-driven airplanes are included.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for 7-9 years old
My 7 year old really liked this, and more generally this whole Landmark series is very good for young readers.Vocabulary and sentence structure are age appropriate.Content is good solid history. As opposed to much of the stuff for this age which is "silly" reading, this series lets them learn something while improving their reading skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative and inspirational book
This book was easy to read and helped me gain an understanding of the Wright brothers and the influence their mother had on their lives as well as their accomplishments and what drove them to invent, and invent, and invent! Not only did it provide a good review of their acccomplishments, but it also provided inspiration to my 11 year old daughter. These men had a can do attitude and never gave up. I recommend this book for anyone who wants knowlege of the Wright brothers, and inspiration to always keep trying.

4-0 out of 5 stars True Discription
A book that truly describes what happened to the Wright Brothers. It tells of how they went from almost nothing to building arplanes. It tells how they worked to build the airplane, and always wanted to build one. 5-0 out of 5 stars suitable for a wide range of ages
I bought this book for my airplane-aficionado son when he was far too young to appreciate all of the advanced details about the jets. No problem - it's a great book to go through, looking at the pictures, and reading just what each letter stands for, starting with "A is for Aerocomet". It was the best airplane book we've found for little kids. Now that he's five, I'm reading the whole thing, every word. It stands up better than most to repeated rereadings.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Jet Alphabet Book
The Jet Alphabet Book is really good because it has my favorite jet is in it; the SR-71 Blackbird. I really like that kind of jet because it can go 3 times the speed of sound and flies so high and so fast the pilot needs to wear a spacesuit and I recomend this book to children ages 4+.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jet Alphabet Book
My 2 year old son loves this book.He requests it and has "read" it over and over.He can pick out and name specific jets by their shape and color.Illustrations are realistic. 4-0 out of 5 stars Ever had an airplane sketch "trapped" inside you?
Draw 50 Airplanes has been around for a while. I'm glad that it is still in print.Wish it had been around when I was a kid, doodling airplanes. A bunch of my favorites are there: Sopwiths,P-40s, Spitfires, F-86 Sabres, P-38s.Hopefully, someday, there will be a revised edition that can capture some late arrivals to the first century of flightthat today's kids really like- the Space Shuttle, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk. There are dozens of "how to sketch", "how to draw" titles out there. This is not one of those books. This book skips the nuances of perspective and the agony of descriptive geometry. It is not about fine art... it is not about drafting...When you sign a note to a friend, did you ever want to be able to add a quick Spitfire with a flourish? One that someone else thinks looks like a Spitfire?Or how about a sketch of the Wright Flyer? This is THAT kind of a book. This is about the serious business of producing a happy characture of the airplane that dances in your head. It will egg you on until you pick up a pencil and make an airplane appear on the page.It will help you perfect that skill. A curved line here, a pair of straight lines there. One pencil stroke at a time. And it obviously wasn't written just for kids. This book can help just about anyone create some really neat airplane doodles.Who knows what comes from that... So many rich experiences in life depend on having some early successes, the hopeful satisfaction that causes you to press onward... J. Campbell Martin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like the Airport
This book was the perfect book to prepare my 3 year old son for our upcoming plane trip. The pictures perfectly depict what it's like at the airport, including the waiting areas. We talk about what the people are doing, where they're going, and what's going on. Also, the pictures themselves are so colorful and fun to look at that it completely captures his attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for toddlers
My daughter, now 23 months, has loved this book since she was 14 months old. This book has made her even more fascinated with airplanes. When she sees an airplane she always points it out and asks to go on an airplane. She asks for us to read this book daily (my husband and I have it memorized). The illustrations are wonderfully bright in color. The text is simple but written well for young children to understand the pictures. This is one book I don't mind reading everyday!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for young airplane lovers!
My 14-month old son absolutely loves this book, and I have to admit that I do, too.The text is well-written and rhymes, with a nice cadence to it that is fun to read, even after you've read it three times in a row!The book explains how you travel by airplane -- packing your bag, going to the terminal, checking in, getting on board, etc.It even (briefly and simply) tells how airplanes fly.The illustrations are bright and colourful, and the story really feeds a little one's excitement about going on a flight. If your child (age 6 or less, I'd guess) is interested in airplanes, or if you are planning to travel on one, I would highly recommend this book.

I've been looking for a book like this for my niece who has gotten bitten by the "disaster" bug ever since the movie "Titanic" came out. This is an excellent book for older children and young teens. The text really makes the whole Hindenburg tragedy come vividly to life. And the pictures are just "Wow!".I think Ken Marschall has done the illustrations for some other notable large-illustration books including ones on the Titanic, and he outdoes himself again on this book. The detail is superb.I'm highly recommending this book to my friends who are looking for Christmas gifts for their kids.I'm even going to buy a copy for my mom! :-) Books like this don't come any better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Wright Brothers
Freedman's interesting narrative of the Wright brothers portrays them as proper gentlemen who wore suits with bowties even while repairing bicycles in their shop, mechanical geniuses despite being high school dropouts, and totally dedicated to their dream of creating an aeroplane. The photographs in this book were taken by Wilbur and Orville Wright themselves. In addition to being aviators, they had a fascination with photography and converted a backyard shed for processing film. They knew that documenting their progress would be important for future generations.4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
How They Invented the Airplane is probably the best Wright Brothers biography yet. It's written by my favorite author of the genre, Russell Freedman. (Lincoln: A Photobiography)5-0 out of 5 stars The Wright Brothers is probably the best book ever written
Wilbur Wright, the brother with visions, invented the airplane along with Orville Wright, the brother who loved to tinker.Wilbur once said, " My brother Orville and myself lived together, played together and, in fact thought together."Wilbur and Orville persevered in their struggle against Mother Nature, the public opinion, and failed flights and experiments to fulfill their dream of making a flying machine. 5-0 out of 5 stars Adored by my 3 year old boy
Nothing soothes the 3-year-old (boy) soul better than "This Plane" or its partners "This Train" etc. Also a pleasure for parents sick of reading the minutiae in encyclopedia-type aircraft books - the beautiful illustration, simple copy, and brief length are refreshing. I think it could be appropriate for babies through early readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book for an Airplane-Obsessed Toddler
My 22 month old son is currently obsessed with airplanes and helicopters. He is constantly peering at the sky, looking for them flying overhead. In my search for a book or two of planes, this is the clear winner. The text is very simple "this plane carries passengers... this plane carries cargo."The illustrations, however, are gorgeous. They are clearly painted by someone with a love for aircraft. Some are historical, some are futuristic. They are a pleasure to view.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents of kids who love planes!
My boys (aged 3) love this book. The illustrations are bright and detailed. The text that accompanies each picture describes what the plane in the picture does that makes it different from other planes (ie. "This planes takes off with a catapult."). My kids can flip through the pages of book for ages. On the inside cover there are additional illustrations of all sort of planes with their official names- a great help for parents who don't have a clue about planes! ... Read more
