5-0 out of 5 stars The story of the 7,5000 warriors who guard Qin, China's first emperor
While on vacation in China, Jane O'Connor visited the thousands of life-sized terracotta warrior statues discovered near the tomb on an emperor in northern China. She was inspired to find out more about both the army of ghostly gray warriors and the man who had ordered their creation. But as O'Connor read everything available about the first emperor and his buried army she discovered that a book on the subject had not yet been written for children."The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China" rectifies that mistake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden arrows, Poisoned King, and Buried Treasure!
Rich with exciting historical details, The Emperor's Silent Army:Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China by Jane O'Connor offers a well-researched book that tantalizes the reader with tales of a poisoned King, a camouflaged dead body, and a booby-trapped tomb. The targeted audience of ages 9-12 will thrill with the adventure while simultaneously profiting from their newfound knowledge of China's first Emperor, Qin Shihuang, and his war and burial customs.Heavily strewn with color photographs, computer images, maps, drawings, and charts, the book easily captures interest and successfully holds attention with its succinct wording and short chapters that directly complement the images. 5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book
This is one of the few history books that are as easy to read as fiction. You won't have to force yourself to read it - though you may have trouble putting it down! In spite of this, it is not fictionalized.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hawaii's Own!
I am Native Hawaiian and was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii within minutes of Iolani Palace. Much of my culture was lost and our land taken away. Many books were written some accurate and some not so accurate. This book was wonderfully written and with love, as the author did her many years of research. I say this because the true essence of Princess Kaiulani was depicted, our people, and culture. But most of all, the tragic lost of our monarchy, our queen, and our princess. The pictures and writing is wonderful, it is a easy reader book for children but made for everyone. This book is the most accurate, most informative, and most compassionate book I have read by any author on this subject. To get a condensed version of our history this would be the book to share. I appreciate the authors writing and grace she took to write such a wonderful book on our beloved Princess Kaiulani and our people. The love and tragedies our people went through, however, will never take away our spirit. That is where the word "Aloha" came from. Love, compassion, and spirit. This is something our princess had for her culture and people. This is something shared amongst all Hawaiians today. We may be a culture that had lost a lot but we will never be forgotten. The pictures are wonderful and brings me back as a little girl visiting the palace on a school field trip. I felt lost and sadness as I walk thru the palace, the same way I felt as I read this book. I couldnt help but cry through most of this book, I felt the same sadness and lost. To the author.... Mahalo Nui Loa! Malama Pono!

5-0 out of 5 stars For everyone who loves Hawaii
This book is a joy to read for everyone who has ever fallen in love with Hawaii (and even those who haven't).This poignant story of the last Hawaiian princess will give you a much deeper view of Hawaii than everbefore.Hawaii is a lovely vacation spot, but it also has a rich, uniquehistory.I heartily recommend Princess Ka'iulani:Hope of a Nation, Heartof a People for all ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to color
Both my sons loved this book, and they had never been to Hawaii. We started reading it to them when they were around 12 months old. They loved the photographs and loved the concept of color. Lots to look at in each picture and to talk about with your children. It doesn't get boring either, even after the 40th time - after all this is Hawaii!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hawaii is presented in beautiful pictures with color names.
This book presents the people and state of Hawaii in color photographs.A color name is given, then the photos. Some brief facts about Hawaii explaining the photots help child and parent interact. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking a tour of Hawai'i, the Aloha State
Here we are at the end of the From Sea to Shining Sea, Second Series, and if there is one thing I have learned about the 50th state in the past year it is that the correct spelling is Hawai'i and not Hawaii (but apparently it is still Hawaiians and not Hawai'ians). Not that P.J. Neri explicitly points that out in Introducing the Aloha State, Chapter One of this informative and colorful book. She simply uses the correct spelling about a dozen times on those first two pages.Even if the correct spelling of Hawai'i is not familiar to young readers most of what Neri says come to mind when people think of the state will be: the bombing of Pearl Harbor, lava flows and fountains of fire, pineapples, hula dancing, and ukuleles.Neri builds on that common knowledge to teach young students about the geography, history, government, people and places of the 50th state.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interviews with 28 New Zealanders about their daily lives
"We live in New Zealand" is a different sort of geography book for young students in that it offers first-person interviews with people from various occupations and ages from across New Zealand, from shepherd Matthew Parsons to Elwyn Thomas, a pipeline worker, each provided in a two-page spread.Consequently, it makes for an interesting supplemental volume to your standard juvenile geography books about New Zealand that look at the history and government, agriculture and industry, cultures and geography of the country. There is a list of facts in the back that touch on some of these elements, but author John Ball's purpose here is to let young readers find out what it is like to live in New Zealand today.Consequently, "We Live in New Zealand" offers the stories of a schoolgirl and a teacher of Maori arts, an artist and a charter-vessel skipper, an alpine guide and a traffic officer, with 28 interviews in all, providing a nice cross-section of the people and occupations of New Zealand. Each is accompanied by photographs of the interviewee along with where they work and live, taken by Chris Fairclough.Final note: I wanted to mention that there is a notation at the end of one of the chapters that the young person interviewed was tragically killed which at work in the New Zealand bush.Stumbling across that might be upsetting to some young readers (given personal circumstances), so teachers might want to take that into account before assigning this particular volume. ...
