5-0 out of 5 stars These books are great....especially for younger kids
My 6 year old daughter and I have started reading the first box set (I read them to her older sister at this age). They are very funny and even when I read a passage that is not "correct English" my daughter will laugh because she knows that's not the way you talk. That's what makes it so funny. We just finished Sneaky-Peaky Spying which is one of my favorites. How horrible is it to a little kid when she thinks she sees her Teacher stealing grapes at the grocery store???I highly recommend this collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones is the koolestess 6 year-old on the hole planit!!!!
Yes, I know there are typos in the title. Yes, I intended them. If you can't get over them, you aren't quite as mature as is Junie B. Jones. My daughter is 6 and in first grade. We discovered the Junie B. Jones series when one was sent home in her reading folder for homework. Thank you to her teacher for sending that book. We have since read every title we can find in the series. While I'm reading to our daughter, my wife is laughing from the other room as she tries to listen to Junie B.'s wonderful antics. While she is learning to spell (just like my daughter) she is wise beyond her ears (as Junie would say). Reviewers of these books who can't get over Junie's use of grammar are missing the point. The stories have wonderful themes and Junie always learns the right lesson by the last chapter, despite her best efforts. Each and every title fits the world of a first grader to a T. My daughter is getting 5 more titles for Christmas this year. Please don't tell her. I want it to be a surprise! If I can let you in on a secret, I'm looking forward to her getting them, too...and my mother was such a strict grammarian that she wouldn't even let me use an adverb incorrect. JOKE!!!!!!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones-ness
We enjoy the Junie B Jones series, and this set is no different. The character is a fun character, and everyone in the family gathers around when someone starts to read it aloud, usually my 17 year old daughter to her older sister! The two of them crack up over Junie B together. The younger ones love the stories too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for families who are adopting
My husband and I are adopting a baby boy. I have been trying to find a 'Big Sister' book for our daughter, but so many of them are about mom being pregnant and giving birth to the new sibling. Thisbook is the only one I have seen that is suitable for both situations (adoption or giving birth). The story itself is simple, but very sweet and reassuring for the older child. My daughter absolutely loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite of 2-yr-old big sister
Our daughter was given this book a few months before her baby sister arrived. She liked it alot pre-sis and still requests it now that li'l sis is here. Upon receiving it, I didn't think much of it (not a "cool", super-aesthetically pleasing cover), but my daughter really liked it.The book always refers to "our baby" so that it works expecting boy or girl.I really appreciated the intro to what baby will be like - my daughter thus was able to enthusiastically spout some facts (slightly altered/added by us) about baby before she arrived - "Baby cry alot.Baby poop alot.Baby sleep in crib."As for the book baby being bottle-fed, I just told our daughter that our baby would nurse (fortunately we had friends that were nursing so she could see what it was versus me explaining it ;). Overall - I'm ordering the book for my sister-in-law who's expecting her second.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too mainstream.
My mother bought this book for my daughter, and I absolutely detested in.My daughter was confused as well, as to why everything was "wrong," especially with the bottlefeeding.I know most women give up quickly on breastfeeding, but couldn't the author even pretend that some women breastfeed? And of course the baby is always in a stroller or bouncy seat, sleeps in a crib, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best...
I would have to say that I don't particularly agree with this book.I mean, in my opinion, the most important thing about an apple is that it is food, not that it is round.Regardless, it did provide for an interesting conversation in my 2nd grade class, as well as a fun get-to-know-you activity. After reading the book, disucssing differing view points, each student created a page about "The most important thing about me is_____".

5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative on Purpose
Hi, I just read the review below from the infuriated reader who said that this book talks down to children.
4-0 out of 5 stars The most important thing is that this is a good book...
Sweetly and simply written in a similar lulling tone as other Margaret Wise Brown books.Take it for what it is -- a children's book that offers children simple, concrete information that provides them with security and a basic understanding that regardless of how many things define us, there is at least one thing that makes us unique / who we are. And that's a good thing to know and count on. I don't think this book intends to speak to children as if they're brainless and I believe that a young, innocent mind "gets" the message.Any book that reinforces that the best, most important thing about being you is simply that you are you should be applauded and supported by all of us. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Long -awaited Sequel to "Charmed Life" Does Not Disappoint
Nearly a year after the events of "Charmed Life," Cat Chant has settled into Chrestomanci Castle and learned some mastery over his own powerful magic.During the summer holidays, the young enchanter faces new challenges that range from learning how to ride his capricious horse, Syracuse, to caring for a mysterious egg that has been given to him by his new friend, Marianne Pinhoe. And then there's that magical barrier in the woods . . . a barrier that seems designed less to keep strangers out than to keep even stranger things in.

Editorial Review

"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T.Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.Read more

Jon Scieska wrote the book The True Story of The Three Little Pigs. The genre of this book is Fiction. In the book, there are four main characters. They are Alexander, and the three little pigs.
5-0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT
This is a wonderful, delightful and simply funny off take on the old three little pigs story. It is told by the wolf and the story is through his eyes. Now whether you choose to believe his story or not, is completely up to you.The wolf is able to tell a pretty convincing tale, but you just don't really know. This story could be pulled from the newspaper of any of our large city papers today. The author has a true wit about his writing that is appealing to bothyoung and old.The art work is great and fits quite well with the text.Recommend this one quite highly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars TooToo Small
Although Mr. Sendak's books are wonderful, This collection, the Nutshell Library is totally impractical. The books are so small that they are disappointing. I bought the books for my 2 year old grandson and they are of no use because of the size. It would be helpful, if in describing the collection, the size of the books were mentioned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Paddle Once, Paddle Twice, Paddle Chicken Soup with Rice
Poetry?Well, maybe not laureate stuff, but great none-the-less.Rhyming?Cadence?Fun?Silly word games?Characters too good to forget, even if you don't know Sendak's other work - these tiny books are the way to nighttime pleasantries with your children. You will love reading them and they will love memorizing them just for the fun of it.Then they can read them back to you.Learning the months is a delight, with appropriate drawings and word descriptions for each time of the year. The Nutshell Library is in the `save forever, or until I have a child' box of both my children. And I can't wait for a grandchild to whom I may read these tiny gems!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for preschoolers and beginning readers
I love "The Nutshell Libraray" books. Sendak shows that very simple stories can be funny, charming, and clever.(Okay, so "Pierre" is pretty strange but I can have a sense of humor about it.)Pairing this set of stories with the DVD "Where the Wild Things Are...and other Maurice Sendak Stories" would be a terrific present for an early reader who could listen to the songs and then read the books.I am sure most kids would had "Where The Wild Things Are" read to them by kindergarten but "The Nutshell Library" is a worthy addition to any family's collection as well. ... Editorial Review

Surely among the most lovable of all Dr. Seuss creations, Horton the Elephant represents kindness, trustworthiness, and perseverance--all wrapped up, thank goodness, in a comical and even absurd package. Horton hears a cry for help from a speck of dust, and spends much of the book trying to protect the infinitesimal creatures who live on it from the derision and trickery of other animals, who think their elephant friend has gone quite nutty. But worse is in store: an eagle carries away the clover in which Horton has placed the life-bearing speck, and "let that small clover drop somewhere inside / of a great patch of clovers a hundred miles wide!" Horton wins in the end, after persuading the "Who's" to make as much noise as possible and prove their existence. This classic is not only fun, but a great way to introduce thoughtful children to essentially philosophical questions. How, after all, are we so sure there aren't invisible civilizations floating by on every mote? 4-0 out of 5 stars Use your judgement, and pick and choose
As a new elementary guidance counselor, I haven't found a kids' book on divorce yet that I LOVE. Meanwhile, this is useful. It covers several aspects of divorce. It is too long to use the whole thing in one sitting with young children, and not all of it applies in every situation or is appropriate with every age group. However, it's fairly easy to select what you think is helpful and appropriate for your child(ren) because of the comic-book format and different chapters on different topics (ie. Having Two Homes, Telling Your Friends, Meeting Parents' New Friends).
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book with negative spin
In trying to explain divorce, I read this to my son and paraphrased what the book said because I found myself surprised at the way it was written (especially since it was written by Arthur's creator, Marc Brown.) The book is negative in tone, language and illustrations. I'm not a parent trying to candy-coat divorce, but there have to be better books out there than this!
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful in school counseling groups
I use this routinely in elementary school divorce adjustment groups, particularly for grades Kinder through 3rd. The pictures are engaging and the situations are realistic. Students open up with information that helps me identify needs. Some parents have used this book with their children, and kids are always pleased to find that I have it, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book
I have a 3 year old and 5 year old who love the books of Mo Willems. Recently the 5 year old took this book to school as his 'show and tell' in order to read it to his class. It was a huge success! We started our Mo Willems collection with 'Don't let the Pidgeon drive the Bus', we've added 'the Pidgeon finds a Hotdog' and 'Don't let the Pidgeon stay up late' and just recently added this book and 'the pidgeon has feeling too'. I love these books because my kids love them and that encourages them to keep reading! Well done Mo Willems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Our first Mo Willems book was Knuffle Bunny and we were hooked. We've sinced bought 4 more of his books including The Pigeon Loves Things That Go! They're all great. Our kids love them and for kids books they're pretty darn amusing for adults too. Good stuff!

4-0 out of 5 stars the carnivorus carnival
"Rraww," growled the prowling lions in this book, The Carnivorous Carnival. When this book begins, Violet, Sunny and Klaus are trapped in Count Olaf's car trunk as they go to Madam Lulu's carnival. At the carnival, it is weird. The Baudelaires worked at the House of Freaks, where people make fun of them. Also there were deadly lions there too, which ate people, a dangerous roller coaster, andMadam Lulu's strange crystal ball. Eventually Count Olaf decide to put the House of Freaks in the lion's den.The other freaks must fight the Baudelaires. None of the freaks falls into the lion's den.The Baudelaires barely escape, but with Count Olaf. I'd recommend this book because it is suspenseful, humorous and has interesting characters.
5-0 out of 5 stars freaks and fear and the breaking of formula
Here is the ninth volume in Lemony Snicket's bestselling children's collection A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Baudelaire orphans had hidden in the trunk of Count Olaf's car at the end of The Hostile Hospital to escape from a fire that Olaf and his "associates" had set. With The Carnivorous Carnival They arrive at the Caligari Carnival out in the middle of the hinterlands and are able to get out of the trunk before Count Olaf discovers them. Klaus, Violet, and Sunny disguise themselves as Carnival Freaks so that they can stay at the Carnival and have the opportunity to discover some facts about the possibility of one of their parents still living and the rest of the "Snicket File". Klaus and Violet are disguised as a Two-Headed Freak Beverly / Eliot, Sunny is Chabo the Wolf Baby. They join with other freaks, like Kevin the Ambidextrous Man, Colette the Contortionist, and Hugo the Hunchback.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Snicket's Best
In the ninth installment of the Series of Unfortunate Events, The Carnivorous Carnival, Mr. Snicket leaves behind the basic kids get a new guardian, Count Olaf tries to get them once again outline of the first eight books. This is the first book in the series where the Baudelaires are guardianless. Instead, they find themselves stuck in a sinister plot involving Count Olaf and his troupe, an enigmatic fortune teller, and one damn creepy carnival. This book is quite well-written, and Tim Curry perfectly depicts the sinister quality on the book-on-tape version.

Editorial Review

Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Read more

Boynton's books are WONDERFUL!We bought this set after being given several of her books as gifts.I checked a few more out of the library and had to get copies of our own.The pictures are so delightful and funny! Our 4 month old isn't necessarily into the pictures, but she loves to hear the books read to her!

5-0 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE, GREAT books!
My son is 16 years old.We bought Sandra Boynton's books when he was a baby. The illustrations are funny and they are easy to read aloud in a funny, exaggerated way.Our son loved Boynton's books so much that, 14 years later, my husband and I can STILL recite "Moo Baa La La La."We buy them for all our friends who have babies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aaaaaawww!
I got this book when I was 6 and I still like it! It is the touching story of little Lilly, who loves her teacher but hates him when he takes away her purple plastic purse and sunglasses. It is sooo cute and very fun to read. It is very true-to-life, unlike those other stupid books that think they're tapping into the minds of children. I highly recommend this book. I even have a kid-sized purple plastic purse and a Lilly stuffed animal! This is such a cute book. 5 stars and perfect for any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Kevin Henkes hit
We read two books to our daughter every night. With that in mind, we pay careful attention to the books we buy to read her. I love all of Kevin Henkes' books. They are both visually delightful and entertaining for both my daughter and I. He manages to be intelligent without being corny, and as I am reading I honestly feel like her vocabulary is being broadened. He never "dumbs down" his book with easy wording. I am also an English teacher and appreciate all aspects of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous--another great Kevin Henkes book
I just started student teaching this semester and this was the first book I read to my third grade class. Some read it already, but were still very excited to hear it again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars The first is still the best!
Don't let the name fool you, this is not a farm animal book in any aspect. This is a legend, really! I first read this book in middle school, while all the other kids were reading Goosebump-like books I was delving into this funny, bold and often sad treasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars a story well put
the pigman... paul zindel, in all his books, most especially this one, gives us a charming, more sophisticated depiction of teenage life. he doesnt categorize his characters, good, bad, spoiled, ugly, beautiful. john isnt just "the rebel teen", every one of his actions, and the the things his characters says, are justified, and if not justified, explained. meaning, theres a story behind each character, so that then you know " well thats why they did what they did". or, "thats definately something she'd say". john and lorraine think, and have consciences. and romance is lightly laid over them. all in all... its awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pigman by zach
This books title is The Pigman by Paul Zindel. In the beginning Lorraine and John, two high school students, tell about themselves and the people around them. They also tell about the things they like to do such as make prank phone calls and hang around the cemetery with friends and drink. This book is about how the Pigman makes them realize that people they like will not always be around. In one part they are looking around the Pigman's house and they find the Pigman's wife's funeral bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bananas Gorilla and kids...
My copy of this book is chewed, back broken, torn, taped, worn out by the use of my own children and years of my students in my Primary classrooms. I recall reading this with my younger brother and that was just forever ago. Some books just stand the test of time and this is one of those. As a teacher I know very young children like to categorize, inspect, look for something(well what else explains I SPY books?)and ferret out details. Scarry definitely "got that". I've seen children slip inside these pages and be entertained and cataloging for really long periods of time. Not that I'm suggesting it for that reason ALONE. My daughter Sylvia was definitely one of those kinds of children and she always searched for Bananas Gorilla. I had several videos that were made of the Richard Scarry world (get them) and at a very young age-two to three- she loved those in combination with the books. My son much later was similarly enthralled and now I use this material when the Standards hockers aren't looking teaching my 1st grade with students who have ELD needs-second language development. This particular book I really like because the early years social studies curriculum is "community" based and this attends to those understandings so well. I recommend this as a teacher to families, and with parent interaction and co-exploring it's a very fun afternoon activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars worn out
I am attempting to order another copy of this wonderful book because my 40 year old son remembers my reading it to him as a little boy and he wants a copy for his two year old son!The conversations you can have with your child as you examine the pages are incredible! Our copy is completely worn out, but I have saved it for when he visits!

5-0 out of 5 stars My best book of all time
I got this book as a prize when I was 8, and I loved it every minute. I have read this book so many times and this has been a blast 18 years owning it. It has been my source for dreams of many of my childhood dreams and these illustrations are so good. If you are looking to buy your kid a book, do yourself a favor and get this own. It was my best friend for a long time and I am sure, it will be for your kid too !! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Archly Amazing Animal Alphabet Advances Art Appreciation!
I found this book in a thrift store and was instantly mesmerized. The art is of the absolute highest caliber. Base is beyond gifted. These paintings are an ideal merger of realism and fantasy with lush, highly saturated color and deep, contrasty depth. I imagine this book could inspire any kid with a creative bent a great deal more than several trips to an art museum. I've bought copies to give to fellow artist/philosopher friends whether or not they've got kids. (We don't as yet, but we're working on it, and have beloved nieces and a nephew).
1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a children's book
Loving artistic kids' books, I thought the reviews sounded awesome. And they are so universal! I just received this book and was shocked by the violence, morbidity, darkness and eeriness of the themes. Granted, this is the work of a talented artist, but not material for a light-loving soul, much less a toddler. I can't return it fast enough.
