5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely captivating and brilliant!
When I first heard about the book, it was because a friend recomended it. She said it was one of the best books she ever read, and after reading it myself I completely agree. It is about a girl growing up in the Chinese Cultural Revolution and facing the challenge of growing up in a family with a bad reputation according to the government. I liked this book because it really made me think about how kids are living. Also, because I like books about people with a realistic life, not a fairytale. I would reccomend it to any of my friends!

Don't like it at all. Don't even waste your time reading it. i was forced to read it!!! Two thumbs DOWN :-(!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Depth of Mankind...
This is not the first and probably not the last 'Cultural Revolution Memoir' that I have read.I must admit feeling a bit numb to the stories and account of this tragic point in Chinese history. It has been over a year since that last 'memoir' that I have read, and a friend passed the book on for me to check out.It was time to be reminded of the pain that so many around me have faced in their lives. What is remarkable about Ji Li Jiang's story is not the uniqueness, but rather the commonness of her experience among millions of others. This in no way should negate her or others struggles, yet rather serve to deepen compassion for the many who have experienced destruction at the hands fellow humans.

Editorial Review

In the winter of 1945, on the tiny island of Iwo Jima, a ferocious, epic battle was fought, resultingin the loss of more than 48,000 lives and producing what was to become one of the most recognizablesymbols of World War II: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the peak of MountSuribachi. One of the six, Navy corpsman John Bradley, came away from this historical moment with a deepand mysterious silence about his role in the flag raising. Even his wife heard him speak of it only once intheir 47-year marriage. After Bradley's death, his son James began to piece together the facts of his father'sheroism, as well as that of the other five men, all of whom became reluctant heroes because of their presenceduring that fateful instant when the shutter clicked and created a wartime icon.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for American History!
I can't wait to see the movie. Somebody gave me this book as a gift. I read it with curiousity but I was not excited about it so much because it didn't interest me at first but once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The author is the son of the one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima. He was on today's Imus radio show talking about how many rejections that this book received before it got published. No interest in World War II, I doubt it. It became a best seller because it's one of the most fascinating books out there on our shelves. I gave my copy to my school for it's library. Now that it is being made into a movie by American icon Clint Eastwood, I think we can say that those publishers didn't know what they were doing in the first place when they rejected Bradley's heartbreaking and beautifully written book about his father's experience. He doesn't forget the many others who were involved in the flag-raising. He writes about each of them as if he was their son too.

I am a Kindergarten teacher and this is a great book to read to them.It has excellent pictures. The words can be difficult for Kindergarteners to understand, however, with a little preparation, they will grasp the concept of the book. This book shows the daily lives of a Pilgrim girl.Samuel Eaton's Day compliments this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I share it with every teacher
We originally bought this book at Plimoth Village. My children love it. Having photos of people in actual period dress makes it so much easier to understand that they were real people and they lived differently from us. I share our copy of the book with my children's teachers every fall and they all love it and beg for our copy. Tonight, I'm buying them their own!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Bio. About the Creator of American Sign Language
Born in 1787, young Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was unlike other children his age, for he possessed a condition that made it hard for him to have fun and play with the other kids. His eyes were always watering, and his chest was always aching when he overexerted himself, so he was used to being left behind. However, this, in turn, helped Thomas with his studies, and got him accepted into Yale College at the age of fourteen. Thomas loved learning, and made a pact with himself that he would change the world in some way, he just didn't know how. That is, until he met Alice Cogswell, a deaf girl who couldn't communicate with the other children her age. Thomas soon headed to Europe to learn all about sign language, and brought it back to America, where he developed American Sign Language, and taught many children how to communicate with the outside world, and leave their isolation behind. This is his story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesse Smoke was a real boy.
Through the eyes of a young man, we were able to see the tragedy that the Andrew Jackson administration orchestrated in behalf of the Cherokee nation as well as many other Southeastern Indian tribes. We were able to feel the hurt and know the injustice of a peaceful people uprooted and driven, in the dead of winter, to a reservation in what is now Oklahoma. We were able to feel the hopes and dreams of a boy and a people shattered by greed, politics and military might. This is a classic which should be in every school library in the country. Yes, I have that drop ofblood in my veins that makes me a bona fide Cherokee. I am proud that the legend of a proud, industrious, creative people still remains in our hearts.

If you like historical fiction, then I think you should read The Journal of Jesse Smoke because it was very exciting. It was exciting when the soldiers came to take all the Cherokee and Creeke Indians.I thought that was interesting because then a white man came trying to steal the house when a soilder beat up.Then, they went to a lot of forts. Many died. The Cherokee and Creeke Indians called that journey the Trail of Tears.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Color Me Dark
In this book, Color Me Dark, the rising action is about how black and white people were separated back in the early 1900's. The main character of the story, Nellie, is trying to get used to the fact that her family will move from Tennessee all the way to Chicago because her father plans on opening a business. Because blacks and whites are together but segregated, she faces many trails.
2-0 out of 5 stars Starts Too Slow
The author took too many pages to introduce the charactors. I really was intersted in the great mirgation North, but I just kept readind and READING and there was just no action. Not the best in the series.

Very informative and wonderfully written stories of the heroes of the Christian faith.Riveting and inspiring!I've used this with my own children, in teaching Sunday School and in my 4th grade class. It's always the preferred book, even when reading from several other sources.Every Christian should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and well written
We have used this book in our home school studies of the Middle Ages, and have loved it.The author makes the history come alive with his wonderful writing style and interesting information. We have used it alongside other books that sometimes discuss the same people in history, and this one is by far the most interesting narrative.I love it, as do my 5th and 2nd grader. We use it as a read aloud, but an older student could easily tackle it as a reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Hesitate to Buy This Book!
I have had an interest in buying this book for many years. It is recommended in virtually every reputable catalog. It just always seemed like when essential schoolbooks were purchased, it didn't make sense to purchase a book about just ONE person.Well, that was a gigantic mistake on my part. The accomplishments of Archimedes made him one of the most important founders of science. This captivating book tells the story of Archimedes life AND gives vivid imagery to his accomplishments through simple, effective text and delightful illustrations. From my 3rd grader to my 10th grader, they all eagerly finished the book with enthusiastic comprehension.Of course, the "Eureka" story stood out to all, but other concepts such as levers and water displacement were covered in a way that brought clarity to those scientific principles. So this book is not about one man, but a plethora of important scientific observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful AND Entertaining - a rare mix
I just got done reading this aloud to my homeschooled 6th grade twins. What a treasure! The author weaves together mathematical and scientific principles into a delightful story format. My kids had no trouble understanding the well-illustrated concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Archimedes

4-0 out of 5 stars It might save a child from a life behind bars
It's aimed at junior and senior high school kids to keep them out of gangs. I'm not going to go into my feelings toward this guy or the death penalty or his execution. As far as the merits of this book, I think it might get some kids to think. Williams does a good job of describing prison life. For some kids it might be the smells, others the rules or something simple like never being able to have a soda again. But if he can help one kid stay out of prison he has done something good with his life. Does it make up for the bad? I'll leave that up to God, karma, whatever. It's not for me to decide.

Stanley Tookie Williams is the main character in this book. He is now in prison on San Quentin's Death row because he was found guilty of killing 4 people in 2 robberies. He wrote this book from death row. I believe that if Tookie really was guilty of this heinous crime that he would have confessed to doing this, because he is a real man and as a real man, you do a lot of things differently. Tookie doesn't really change throughout the whole book, but he does talk about redemption.

I was assigned the topic of Japanese Americans and the internment camps for my final paper.First of all, I think this book accounts for my great grade. The book is full of information and photographs. Ms. Oppenheim also makes the story of what happened so clear.I am ashamed that my country did such a thing to their own citizens. It's scary really. It's also weird that not that many people my age even know about it.This should be taught more.

In many ways, "Dear Miss Breed" may be the best way to share the JA WW II experience with middle and high school students as the letters leave a personal touch to the story; yet there are plenty of accurate historical references about WW II events that affected the JA community.Even if you have read every book about life in Camps for JAs, Miss Breed's story just may move up the list and become your favorite book on this topic...everyone should read "Dear Miss Breed." ... While this book does make interesting connections and presents history as a narrative, it struck this reader as having a strong white Christian bias. Isabel, who expelled Muslims and Jews and then sanctioned the Inquisition to hideously murder and torture those that were left, practically has a halo over her head (the inquisition is mentioned, but she doesn't get nearly enough credit for it). Prince Henry's exploration motives are purely based on his desire to better the lives of savages by spreading Christianity; hubris, greed, and material gain apparently never entered into his equation. Meanwhile, while I commend Foster for devoting a quick chapter to African emperor Mansa Musa, ignored by mainstream children's histories until fairly recently, I have to say that her portrayal of Africans leaves something to be desired; probably the less said the better. I recommend checking the book out of the library prior to plunking down the bucks for it. I will say that it's a decent starting place, but please encourage discussion, hopefully from the non-Western and non-Christian point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Concept
Genevieve Foster's books are based on an intriguing concept: a horizontal approach to history; a view of the world and the people who lived during the lifetime of the main character--in this case Columbus. Charlotte Masonwould have us delve deeply into an era; these books help us do that.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An American Classic (good history supplement)
Almost 5 Stars
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Often overlooked
There aren't enough children's stories that are based on Americanheroes, so this one definitely desreves much recognition. Appleseed's character is based on a true character, yet there is a a fair amount ofmyth in the story to keep things interesting and the children engaged; this book is a definitely a treat

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Book About Johnny Appleseed/Chapman
My children and I seem to be on a Johnny Appleseed binge. This is one of the three books that we have read lately and our second favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
A must read for all youngsters. The feedback that we have gotten on this book from the kids who have read Tyler and His Solve-a-matic machine by Jennifer Bouani, is very positive. I highly recommend this book

4-0 out of 5 stars "...She was tired. Not tired from work, but tired of putting white people first..."
I liked Ms. Giovanni's approach to telling this story. Given that it is a children's book, I appreciate that she looks at the humanity of Rosa Parks, (a woman with a life and a husband), rather than just her political role. I know that my kids will relate better to the story because of that.
3-0 out of 5 stars "The only tired I was, was tired of giving in".
When I was a child in elementary school and Black History Month came along, the children in my class were taught small songs about various African-American heroes. There was the Harriet Tubman song, the Benjamin Banneker song, and the Rosa Parks song. The Rosa Parks song began in this way, "Rosa Parks was tired and sat / In the front of the bus not back / They tried to make her change her seat / Because she was black".Of course, there are two things wrong with this song already.First of all, she sat in the middle of the bus.Not the back of it.Second of all she wasn't tired.Ms. Parks was an activist, but to make her seem like an everywoman her membership in the NAACP was downplayed so that she would be more sympathetic. The plan worked beautifully and Ms. Parks was raised to the status of folk-hero, as was right.UN-fortunately, there are countless children's books out there that choose to ignore her activism. They are under the distinct impression that if children also think that Ms. Parks was tired or unwittingly told to move that it's so much easier a story to tell."Rosa" is one such book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The way to write history for children
Jean Fritz is one of the best writers of history for children. She doesn't romanticize or simplify to the point of distortion, and she really puts the story in history. Fritz looks with an intelligent and sensitive eye into the heart and mind of Pocahontas, and with an unflinching and respectful eye to Native Americans and the English. The Pilgrim's landing on Plymouth Rock gets more attention, but it all started at Jamestown and this book is an excellent introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short Biography
This is a short, less than 100 pages, biography of what is know about Pocahontas.I rated it 5 stars although I would have preferred a longer book. However the book is priced right for it's size.1-0 out of 5 stars the worst book ever
You should NOT buy the Double life of Pochahontas. There is barely any dialog. It's really d u l l. Its about the english at Jamestown. It is more of a text book than a story book. It is barley about pochahontas at all. It all starts when the English build Jamestown... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Tale of Holocaust Horror
Beyond and essential read, Night speaks to the reader about fundamental questions at the heart of the human condition.A powerfully moving autobiography, the story of this teenager's journey through the most horrific death camps of Nazi Europe, strips away discussion of anti-semitism and hatred, to present the raw suffering of individual humans, stuck in situations beyond their control. From the establishment of a ghetto in Elie's home town of Sighet, the reader can only watch with growing horror as the young man and his family are swept up in the Holocaust.Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Gleiwitz: some of the most infamous places in modern human history, rise around Elie, as we watch him stripped of absolutely everything. The reader is swept along helplessly, as Hitler's "Final Solution" unfolds - death marches, starvation, selections, cattle-carts full of people, torture, floggings, mass-murder - and as Elie is gradually reduced to nothing more than a 'hungry stomach'.
5-0 out of 5 stars must reading
this is a disturbing work in that it recounts a man's experience of the nazi death camps. Warning: this book will shake you up mentally, and emotionally. It is not for the faint of heart.Yet, it is a must read because of the exposure it gives to humanity at it's worst and humanity under it's worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation
The short novel Night has emotional power not only because of the dark subject matter, but because Elie Wiesel is a gifted writer who deftly reveals the spiritual and mental anguish of the main character.Generally considered autobiographical, the account follows a young man who feels he is losing not only God, but his humanity as the Nazi machine ravages Europe. The novel itself deserves 10 stars.
