5-0 out of 5 stars My five year old enjoyed this book
We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school. 4-0 out of 5 stars Life Springing Forth.
This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Kids First Science Book
This is one very good science book.If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with yourproject. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high schoolscience textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving everydetail that there is.So what I'm trying to sayis that this is a goodbook. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Strange word choices; does not work as a board book
I understand the power of overcoming adversity, but as the seeds travel, one of the "drowns," one dies in the desert, one is eaten by a bird...I think it is a disturbing little book, actually. It certainly should never have been made into a board book. There are too many words on the page to keep the attention of a toddler or preschooler. The ending seems abrupt as well.I haven't been impressed with the Carle books I have read.

3-0 out of 5 stars not the best for intended age group
I think this book is fine, but not for the preschool crowd.I would use it with older children -- elementary age -- to discuss the life cycle of an annual, the role of the seasons, and the challenges of reproduction which must be overcome by all plants. The Tiny Seed introduces us to many of the hazards faced by seeds and seedlings as they attempt to grow (from falling in water and drowning, being eaten by birds or mice, being overshadowed by large weeds, being stepped on by children, and more) and shows how the ideal environment is a necessity. It covers the role of sunshine and rain, how the seed swells and bursts open, how the plant develops as it grows, and how it produces and disperses its seeds to carry on the next generation. It's not a book for small children, though, since its mostly non-fiction tone is dry, the phrases are stilted, and it doesn't read aloud well.I find it difficult to "cheer on" the tiny seed; where others see him as a hero facing difficult odds, I think the book is too grimly determined to be educational and becomes boring for the youngest child. If you want a book to introduce a unit on seed dispersal, this is the one.If you want to talk with your three year old about the cycle of the seasons, you'd be better off with the Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter collection by Gerda Muller.

5-0 out of 5 stars All about trees
Solid intro to basic concepts regarding trees. I occasionally wished Gibbons would have chosen the more scientifically correct term than a common, but less specific word. Includes an identification guide for various trees and shows young naturalists how to make their own tree identification book (pressing leaves, leaf and bark rubbings, and drawings). Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple yet appealing book about the life cycle of trees
Written and illustrated by Gail Gibbons, Tell Me, Tree: All About Trees For Kids is a simple yet appealing book about the life cycle of trees for beginning readers. The informative text is enhanced throughout with color illustrations teaching young people about the parts of the tree and how it grows, as well as how to identify some of the more common trees of North America. Tell Me, Tree is a very highly recommended and educational book of fun facts for grades 1 through 3. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for emerging readers and study of the seasons
Marzollo does it again! The text and illustrations in thisstory are highly supportive, so that even emergent readers can enjoythis book.Marzollo uses rhyme and repetition to follow the cycle ofa leaf through the four seasons.Very lively and informative, with bright and beautiful cut-paper illustrations...a must-read at home and school. Children who read this book will become well aware of leaves as indicators of the season changes, and more appreciative of their contibution to nature's canvas.I only wish the big book was available to use with my own students! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This book was very interestingand informational I think that anyone who reads it will want to read it again.
I liked this book a great deal because it gave you alot of information such as George invented peanut recipes. The author made you feel like you were actually in the book.It made me feel like I wasn't even reading the book.I think that this book is a great choice to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why no grownup biographies of George Washington Carver??
I'm sure this book is great, and I just ordered it. But am I the only person who is baffled, disgusted and outraged that there apparently are NO adult biographies available on this great man? I did a search on biographies on Thomas Edison, one of Carver's compatriots, and the list of those stretches from here to Menlo Park. The fact that I could find more biographies on Joey Buttafuoco than on George Washington Carver says it all about the United States of America. I am acrymonious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great History Book
My son and I read this book this summer for his summer reading program. Not only did my son, who was 7, enjoy the book but I couldn't wait to learn more from our readings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent plant book!
This book is outstanding!Far from being for just the pre-school/younger elementary set, it has a wealth of information which even older kids can benefit from.In addition to the text based on the House That Jack Built, it has labeled drawings of garden tools, insects in the soil, seeds, clouds, parts of plants, plants, butterflies, birds, and other insects. We (my kids ages 4 thru 10 and I) had fun pointing out the things we know and learning the ones we didn't.The illustrations are excellent- colorful and detailed. This book is a wonderful addition to homeschool unit studies on plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light hearted educational picture book for kids of all ages
Whoever coined the proverb, "a picture is worth a thousand words" could have been talking about Jack's Garden by Henry Cole. 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Real Winner
I wish this book had been available for me when I was a young child. I'm delighted to be able to give it to my son, age 3. This book shows so many things to be found in a garden - from the first scene where Jack stands shovel in hand in an empty garden through the final page where Jack is surrounded by the beautiful outcome of his work to grow a beautiful garden. Along the way we learn the names of so many creatures and gardening items and see how a garden grows. Buy this book. It's a jewel. ... Read more

Beautiful illustrations accompany this magical world where the imagination knows that just maybe little elves hide amongst these plants that "never ever bloom" using them as umbrellas to shelter them from the rain.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Rhyming text, great colorful illustrations. WONDERFUL!
Rhyming, concise text makes learning about non-blooming plants and trees effortless. Each double page spread is grouped in either a logical flow format or grouped by color. The result is vibrant color. The range of plant colors is amazing. An appropriate animal, fish or bird accompanies the illustration.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy introduction to plants for youngest students
Beautiful photographs and clear illustrations combined with easy-to-read text make for a good beginning book on plants for your early elementary aged child. We are using this as part of our homeschool unit on plants. It is a small book (about 6x8 inches) and only 31 pages long, but manages to pack a good amount of information into this small space. A short vocabulary list of new words (pistil, pod, pollen, seedcase, seed and stamen) is given at the end of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional ........
Exceptional illustratiions open up the beauty of nature to young readers. The flower seems to bloom before your very eyes......

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pacing....mostly accurate
Ruth Heller writes a compelling and entertaining story. The illustrations are great and the pacing of the book is engaging. However, as a scientist and informal science educator, I was disappointed by a few inaccuracies in the text that could be easily corrected if a new edition of this book were published. First, an anther is part of the stamen and rests on the filament (in the book she writes " From an anther on a stamen"). Second, fungi are no longer considered a type of plant. Minus these two things this book is a great teaching tool which I've used with many students to discuss floral anatomy and plant life cycles. I've sidestepped the inaccuracies by using it as an opportunity to discuss with students the importance of using multiple literature sources when studying a topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and educational! I was fascinated!
I love this book! The text is fun to read and really easy to understand while introducing some big scientific words. And the pictures are big and colorful, and I really mean BIG and COLORFUL. But even more than that, they are accurate--the flowers, seeds, animals, and insects can all be identified down to the species.Towards the end it gets a little off topic, but even these pages are filled with interesting flower-facts that get you interested in further exploration of the world of flowers. There's even a touch of humor: after pages of large, flamboyant illustrations, the final page contains a single mushroom and the text, "Plants that have no flowers are fascinating, too." I had to laugh at the simplicity and effectiveness of this ending. Last, but not least, the endpapers have a wonderful drawing that shows a flower progressing into a fruit--a wonderful summary of the purpose of the book without using any words. This book definitely gets my recommendation for anyone who wants to introduce their kids to the world of science and nature in an unintimidating, yet accurate and enjoyable format. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Jewish homeschooling perspective
I have been reading textbook after textbook trying to find a publisher that could meet my son's needs. My son is enthusiastic about science. He is entering the third grade, but reading on a fifth grade level. We are an observant Jewish family and I had not found what I was looking for in any secular text, but was skeptical to purchase a text from a Christian perspective.
5-0 out of 5 stars We love Exploring Creation with Botany!
My 11 year old daughter chose this book after looking at several science books over a variety of topics. She enjoys reading it, growing her own plants in the light hut she made (all detailed really well in the instructions), and notebooking the information she is learning. She enjoyed the "shoe" experiment, which enabled her to easily understand and memorize taxonomy. She is looking forward to making her own herb soap as soon as her plants are big enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for young and old
Based on the Charlotte Mason notebooking approach to learning this book by Fulbright will keep your children engaged. The text employs an emersion style approach to learning, which will really aide in the retention of the materials presented. The book is quite detailed yet able to keep the interest of the older student without overwhelming a younger learner.
